Unequal Sex Ratios In An Unhunted Mule Deer Population In New Mexico, Pamela Cotton Apr 1979

Unequal Sex Ratios In An Unhunted Mule Deer Population In New Mexico, Pamela Cotton

Biology ETDs

The adult sex ratio and the sex ratio at birth was determined for the unhunted mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) population occupying the riverbed area of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, Socorro County, New Mexico. The adult sex ratio was computed as the number of yearling and adult males per number of yearling and adult females observed within the effective area of seven linear one-mile transects established on the study area in accordance with the Stake Estimator Technique (Evans 1975). The ratio of 586 males:501 females (117:100) was significantly different from a 50:50 ratio. No evidence was found for …

Site Specificity In The Intercalation Of Antitumor Antibiotics With Dna, Martin Bradford Jones Apr 1979

Site Specificity In The Intercalation Of Antitumor Antibiotics With Dna, Martin Bradford Jones

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Many planar molecules or molecules with planar moieties have been shown to bind to DNA by intercalation, which can be defined as the insertion of a planar moiety between adjacent bases on the DNA strand, reading in the 3'-5' direction, accompanied by a partial unwinding and elongation of the helix in the immediate vicinity of the intercalation site. Intercalation raises the question of specificity of binding of the drug to DNA, since there are 16 possible intercalation sites in normal double-stranded DNA. The conformational changes (elongation and unwinding) associated with intercalation make circular dichroism (CD) an excellent technique for studying …

Development Of High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography Techniques For The Analysis Of Wastewater Effluent, Glenn Douglas Pierce Apr 1979

Development Of High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography Techniques For The Analysis Of Wastewater Effluent, Glenn Douglas Pierce

Civil Engineering ETDs

This investigation characterized a biological secondary wastewater effluent by conventional wastewater analysis parameters, evaluated the capabilities of activated carbon and macroreticular resin for recovering residual organics from the effluent, correlated conventional parameters with carbon recoveries, developed high-pressure liquid chromatographic techniques for separation of organics in the recovered mixtures and identified a selected extract fraction. The Organics-Carbon Adsorbable Standard Method was adapted for use with a low turbidity effluent and a mass balance based on non-volatile total organic carbon was developed, demonstrating that the sorptive capacity of the system was not exceeded by a 60-1 sample. Ten individual carbon chloroform extracts …

Deep Penetration Of Electrons Into Homogeneous Media By The Method Of Condensed Collisions, Joseph Francis Janni Apr 1979

Deep Penetration Of Electrons Into Homogeneous Media By The Method Of Condensed Collisions, Joseph Francis Janni

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The objective of this dissertation was to develop an accurate and efficient alternative to presently available methods of calculating the steady state penetration of electrons deep into homogeneous materials. A thorough solution must include scalar fluxes, net currents, angular distributions, and differential energy spectra. This research has successfully developed the method of condensed collisions, which provides an alternative to methods now in use for the solution of the electron transport problem. The condensed collsion method is general, but has been applied specifically to deep penetration electron transport to demonstrate its utility. The present aplication was for electrons having incident energies …

Short-Term Family Therapy With Juvenile Status Offenders And Their Families, Edeltraut Hannemann Apr 1979

Short-Term Family Therapy With Juvenile Status Offenders And Their Families, Edeltraut Hannemann

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Up to the present time there has been very limited research testing the use of short-term family therapy with adolescents who have come to the attention of juvenile probation agencies and their families. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of short-term conjoint family therapy on the variables of communication, interpersonal relationships, and attitudes.

Mass Transfer At The Edge Of A Rotating Disk, Jeffrey Malcolm Cohen Apr 1979

Mass Transfer At The Edge Of A Rotating Disk, Jeffrey Malcolm Cohen

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

A different approach to the problem of mass transfer to a rotating disk, employing less restrictive assumptions, has been undertaken to quantify the phenomenon of mass transfer at the disk's edge. Experimental work in support of theoretical conjectures was performed as part of this work.

In order to include the effect of mass transfer at the edge on mass transfer to the entire disk, the equation of convective diffusion was solved in two dimensions over a region that extended beyond physical projection of active area of the disk. A synthesis of experimental results and theoretical considerations was used to specify …

Regulation Of The Immune Response To H-Y Antigen In The Mouse, Teresa A. Coons Apr 1979

Regulation Of The Immune Response To H-Y Antigen In The Mouse, Teresa A. Coons

Biology ETDs

The ability of female mice to reject tailskin grafts from male mice of the same inbred strain appears to be regulated by genes located in the major histocompatibility complex of the female recipient. Cell-meditated responses of “nonrejector” strain female mice, grafted with male tailskin, were studied to better understand regulation of the immune response to H-Y (male) antigen. Both in vivo and in vitro experimental systems were used. Survival of male skin grafts on splenectomized female recipients was compared with survival of grafts on untreated females and on splenectomized females reconstituted with spleen or thymus cell preparations. In addition, we …

Film Boiling Destabilization From Hydrodynamic And Thermodynamic Considerations, Fred Samuel Gunnerson Mar 1979

Film Boiling Destabilization From Hydrodynamic And Thermodynamic Considerations, Fred Samuel Gunnerson

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

An analytical method is presented for predicting, from first principles, the minimum heater temperature and heat transfer rate at the onset of film boiling for spherical and ·flat plate heaters in saturated and subcooled liquids. Within the analysis, consideration is given to the two types of film boiling, they are:

(1) Pool film boiling where the entire heater is submerged within the boiling liquid, and

(2) Leidenfrost film boiling where a droplet of liquid boil s above a horizontal plate heater.
