The Mammals Of The Animas Mountains And Adjacent Areas, Hidalgo County, New Mexico, Joseph A. Cook

Occasional Papers

A study of the mammals of the Animas Mountains and adjacent areas of Hidalgo County, New Mexico, was conducted from February 1981 to March 1982. Some 745 specimens were collected along with data concerning the habitat affinities, natural history, and relative abundance of the mammalian fauna. Examination of an additional947 specimens and reporting of specimens in museums supplemented the fieldwork. The recent mammals of the Animas Mountains include 76 species in 21 families. Didelphis virginiana, Lasionycteris noctivagans, Lasiurus ega, Ammospermophilus harrisii, and Reithrodontomys fulvescens are reported for the first time from the study area. The most abundant mammal in the …

Proline's Function In Cold Stress And Osmoregulation In Carrot Tissue Culture Suspensions, Jackie Shane Jan 1986

Proline's Function In Cold Stress And Osmoregulation In Carrot Tissue Culture Suspensions, Jackie Shane

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Wild type and high free proline suspension-cultured carrot cell lines were used to determine whether proline influences cold tolerance. In addition, various stressful environments were imposed on the suspensions by varying media ingredients, such as the addition of mannitol and absicisic acid (ABA), in an effort to induce proline production. Results showed that an optimum concentration of proline hardened the control lines and acted as a growth stimulant under normal growth conditions. When both lines were grown at 3 C the high proline mutant line C-63, proved to be the hardiest. When grown at room temperature, C-63 was actually the …

We review natural selection for worker genes in haplodiploid organisms. We also look at how workers may act against other workers to get them to aid mom as the 'reproductive'.

In August of 1985, PCB Incorporated of Missouri approached the Campo Band of Mission Indians with a proposal to site a temporary polychlorinated biphenals (PCB's) storage facility on the Campo Indian Reservation in San Diego County, California. Approximately 132,000 pounds of PCB materials would be received daily and stored for up to one year at the storage site. The materials would be removed from temporary storage and shipped to a terminal disposal site for incineration or chemical detoxification. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between tribal, state and federal governments with specific attention to the issue of …

Biochemical Variation Of The Desert Tortoise, Gopherus Agassizi, Randy Dean Jennings Dec 1985

Biochemical Variation Of The Desert Tortoise, Gopherus Agassizi, Randy Dean Jennings

Biology ETDs

Relationships among populations of the desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizi, were assessed using starch-gel electrophoresis. Concurrently, tortoises obtained for the electrophoretic study were used in a preliminary morphological analysis. Morphologically, males differed from females in the gular shape and anal scutes, front foot width, carapacial doming, and the posterior curvature of the carapace. Only anal notch depth differed among habitats for female tortoises, while differences in gular length, front foot width, anal notch depth and width, and carapacial flatness were detected among males. Differences in foot and gular shape may reflect their importance in male:male agonistic encounters. Shell shape differences between …

The Tadpoles Of Five Species Of New Mexican Leopard Frogs, Norman J. Scott Jr, Randy D. Jennings Dec 1985

The Tadpoles Of Five Species Of New Mexican Leopard Frogs, Norman J. Scott Jr, Randy D. Jennings

Occasional Papers

Large tadpoles of five New Mexican species of leopard frogs, Rana berlandieri, R. blairi, R. chiricahuensis, R. pipiens, and R. yavapaiensis can be distinguished using a suite of lO morphological variables and color patterns. The tadpoles of R. chiricahuensis tend to be the darkest with the boldest pattern. Rana berlandieri and R. yavapaiensis are less dark and less boldly patterned. The patterns of R. pipiens and R. blairi tadpoles are relatively pale and not heavily patterned. Rana berlandieri is a relatively long, slim tadpole with a moderately deep tail and narrow tail muscle; R. blairi has an oval body shape, …
