Consortia Vs Reform: Creating Congruence, Margaret Landesman, Johann Van Reenen
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
The inability of research libraries to offer the collections their users desire has become more pronounced each year. In response, libraries have moved in two directions: the rapidly growing consortial movement and the movement to advocate and support reforms in scholarly communication. However, if libraries do not pay careful attention, these two directions may, at least partially, cancel one another out.

Kindred Nature: Victorian And Edwardian Women Embrace The Living World By Barbara T. Gates Book Review, Vera Norwood
Kindred Nature: Victorian And Edwardian Women Embrace The Living World By Barbara T. Gates Book Review, Vera Norwood
American Studies Faculty and Staff Publications
The most famous figure in Kindred Nature is Beatrix Potter, the author of the Peter Rabbit stories. Potter's talents in mycology and scientific illustration are less well known. Moreover, why Potter turned from her pursuits in nature study to write animal stories for children has been given very little attention. Feminist historians of science are beginning to examine the life stories of women like Potter to expand our understandings of women's contributions to the biological sciences. Barbara Gates practices such a retrieval in her study of British women's roles in nature study and appreciation during the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Dimensionless Invariants For The Optimal Size (Age) Of Sex Change, Eric Charnov, Unnur Skúladóttir
Dimensionless Invariants For The Optimal Size (Age) Of Sex Change, Eric Charnov, Unnur Skúladóttir
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Optimization models have been widely and successfully used in evolutionary ecology to predict the attributes of organisms; perhaps the greatest quantitative success is in the area of sex allocation (sex ratio, sperm versus eggs for hermaphrodites, time as a male [female] for a sex changer), where the fact of having only one mother and one father makes Darwinian fitness a simple product of gain-via-male times gain-via-female. Previous work on sex change used the maximization of this male—female product to successfully predict the direction and age (size) for sex change, and that age has been shown to imply a breeding sex …

Population History And The Islamization Of The Iberian Peninsula: Skeletal Evidence From The Lower Alentejo Portugal, James L. Boone, Garnett P. Mcmillan
Anthropology Faculty & Staff Publications
Despite the wealth of documentary evidence regarding the development of Andalusian civilization in the Iberian Peninsula following the first Muslim invasions in a.d. 711, considerable controversy surrounds the issue of how to interpret the political, cultural, and demographic impact of Islamization on what is now Spain and Portugal. That Islamic civilization had a profound impact on the culture and language of Iberia cannot be questioned. Much debate, however, centers around the issue of the demographic impact of immigrating North African Berber and Arab settlers into Al-Andalus. Was the rise of Andalusian civilization primarily a process of conquest, immigration, and demographic …

Human Soil: The Ethnobotany Of Edward Franklin Castetter, Rita Louise Benischek
History ETDs
In the late 1920s, the University of New Mexico employed a number of astute and diligent academics including Edward Franklin Castetter, who continued with the university until his death in 1978. The purpose of this thesis is to reconstruct the memories and contributions of Castetter, with an emphasis on the world of science and ethnobotany in the American West during the twentieth century. Castetter was born in Pennsylvania in 1896, and in 1928 he assumed a teaching position in the Department of Biology at the University of New Mexico. He is portrayed as a naturalist, pioneer scientist, westerner, and educator. …

OTras Perspectivas: UNM Occupational Therapy Program Newsletter
Acknowledging that the success of the Occupational Therapy Program hinges on the mutual investment of community and friends beyond the local community, the UNM Occupational Therapy Program faculty and staff have initiated this newsletter. The goal is to provide an additional forum for communication, and provide updates about the program's development, faculty, students, alumni, and friends.
