Ecological Disturbance And Response: Central Role Of Biological Legacies, Jerry F. Franklin, David Lidenmayer, James A. Macmahon, John Magnuson, Arthur Mcknee, David Perry, Robert Waide, David Foster, Frederick Swanson

Long Term Ecological Research Network

Introduction: Our understanding of the long-term ecological consequences of ecosystems disturbances has increased dramatically in the last two decades. The expansion in knowledge has been fueled by recent large and intense natural disturbances that have provided scientists with extraordinary opportunities to thoroughly investigate impacts and recovery processes associated with such disturbances. These disturbances events include the Mount St. Helens eruption of 1980 (Franklin et al. 1984; Franklin, Frenzen, and Swanson 1996). Yellowstone forest fires of 1988 (Christensen et al. 1989) and Hurricane Hugo of 1989 (Walker et al. 1991) and Andrew of 1992 (Pimm et al. 1994). Experiments and long-term …

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Hydrocarbon and halocarbon measurements collected during the second airborne Biomass Burning and Lightning Experiment (BIBLE-B) were subjected to a principal component analysis (PCA), to test the capability for identifying intercorrelated compounds within a large whole air data set. The BIBLE expeditions have sought to quantify and understand the products of burning, electrical discharge, and general atmospheric chemical processes during flights arrayed along the western edge of the Pacific. Principal component analysis was found to offer a compact method for identifying the major modes of composition encountered in the regional whole air data set. Transecting the continental monsoon, urban and industrial …

Bible A Whole-Air Sampling As A Window On Asian Biogeochemistry, Felisa A. Smith, Scott Elliott, Donald R. Blake, Nikola J. Blake, Manvendra D. Dubey, F. Sherwood Rowland, Barkley C. Sive

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Asian trace gas and aerosol emissions into carbon, nitrogen, and other elemental cycles will figure prominently in near term Earth system evolution. Atmospheric hydrocarbon measurements resolve numerous chemical species and can be used to investigate sourcing for key geocarriers. A recent aircraft study of biomass burning and lightning (BIBLE A) explored the East Asian atmosphere and was unique in centering on the Indonesian archipelago. Samples of volatile organics taken over/between the islands of Japan, Saipan, Java, and Borneo are here examined as a guide to whole-air-based studies of future Asian biogeochemistry. The midlatitude onshore/offshore pulse and tropical convection strongly influence …

Thermal Time: Body Size, Food Quality And The 10c Rule, Eric Charnov, James Gillooly Jan 2003

Thermal Time: Body Size, Food Quality And The 10c Rule, Eric Charnov, James Gillooly

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Developmental rates of ectotherms (y) are often linearly related to temperature (Tc in C) within some biologically relevant range of temperatures as y = (1/S)(Tc - Tb), where Tb is the estimated temperature at zero development, and the thermal constant S is the development time multiplied by the temperature above Tb (i.e. degree days above Tb). Among similar species, it has been widely shown that S and Tb are negatively related across environments, that S is positively related to body size, and that Tb is independent of body size but increases with mean environmental temperature. Here we present a model …

Accounts include taxonomic, morphometric, reproductive and ecological information, as well as trap effort and success. In addition, we include a brief history of mammalogical work within Mongolia, a taxonomically updated species list for the country, and a list of institutions with holdings of Mongolian mammals.

Proterozoic Farwell Mountain-Lester Mountain Suture Zone, Northern Colorado : Subduction Flip And Progressive Assembly Of Arcs, Amanda Tyson Dec 2002

Proterozoic Farwell Mountain-Lester Mountain Suture Zone, Northern Colorado : Subduction Flip And Progressive Assembly Of Arcs, Amanda Tyson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The mechanisms by which juvenile Paleoproterozoic continental crust was derived from the mantle, accreted to southwestern Laurentia ca. 1.78-1.68 Ga, and stabilized as new continental lithosphere have been much debated. This study addresses the problem by assessing the proposed Paleoproterozoic "Farwell Mountain–Lester Mountain suture zone," a broad, complex zone of deformation that may contain the oldest accretionary structures within Paleoproterozoic crust south of the Cheyenne belt. The proposed "suture zone" is mapped in the Park Range of northern Colorado as a northeast-trending belt of imbricated tectonic slivers between ca. 1.79-1.77 Ga Green Mountain rocks to the north and ca. 1.76-1.72 …
