A Way Of Seeing: The Transformation Of American Soldiers' Snapshot Photography During The Vietnam War, Sara Hagerty Jul 2013

A Way Of Seeing: The Transformation Of American Soldiers' Snapshot Photography During The Vietnam War, Sara Hagerty

Art & Art History ETDs

Cultural conventions of appropriateness, social standards of artistic practice, and contemporary vernacular traditions of how to visually commemorate ones life impact snapshot photography. An analysis of American soldiers' snapshots taken during the Vietnam War from the National Veterans Art Museum's archive in Chicago reveals a unique set of images due to their origins as snapshots and their stylistic references to other visual frameworks that are historically used to represent war. Through an examination of the culture of snapshot making, the historic presence of cameras on the battlefield, the conditions faced by American soldiers during the Vietnam War, and the popular …

The Role Of Snai2/Slug In Diabetes-Impaired Wound Healing, Krystle K. Quan Jul 2013

The Role Of Snai2/Slug In Diabetes-Impaired Wound Healing, Krystle K. Quan

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Impaired wound healing is a common complication of diabetes mellitus. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a consequence of diabetes and are formed from non-enzymatic reactions between glucose and proteins. The accumulation of AGEs is believed to disrupt wound repair and alter protein function. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and a downstream effector, Snai2/Slug, are key regulators of reepithelialization, a vital component of wound healing. Reepithelialization requires keratinocyte proliferation and migration. Therefore, we examined the impact of AGEs on these EGF-stimulated responses. In this dissertation, I present evidence for a critical role of Snai2 in diabetes-impaired wound reepithelialization, extending …

The Socioeconomic Organization Of Communal Hunting: An Archaeological Examination Of Shoshone Collective Action, Matthew John O'Brien Jul 2013

The Socioeconomic Organization Of Communal Hunting: An Archaeological Examination Of Shoshone Collective Action, Matthew John O'Brien

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation focuses on developing the means to investigate social organization of communal hunting among egalitarian groups. Communal hunting represents an alternative subsistence strategy that takes advantage of seasonal aggregation of prey species. To maximize returns from these large herds, human foraging groups opt to cooperate with additional groups that otherwise maintain their political independence during the rest of the year. Yet, what is not clear is whether these temporary large camps maintain their egalitarian ethos, giving an equal voice to all members or if the participants adopt an alternative social and political structure. This dissertation uses the case study …

The Effect Of Sympathetic Activation On Gut Microbiota In Obstructive Sleep Apnea, John (Joe) Alcock Jul 2013

The Effect Of Sympathetic Activation On Gut Microbiota In Obstructive Sleep Apnea, John (Joe) Alcock

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Background: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) suffer from increased mortality because of complications from metabolic and cardiovascular disease. Excess sympathetic nervous activity and catecholamine exposure contribute to the disease associations of OSA, but the underlying mechanism remains enigmatic. Because catecholamines cause overgrowth of bacteria in the class Enterobacteriaceae in the laboratory, this translational study proposed a role for altered gut microbiota in the complications of OSA. Objectives: We tested the hypothesis that catecholamine excess in disordered sleep alters intestinal microbiota by comparing urinary catecholamines and the fecal microbiome of 24 patients with obstructive sleep apnea and 23 controls. Results: …

Role Of Rab7 In The Pathogenesis Of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Type2b (Cmt2b) Disease, Soumik Basuray Jul 2013

Role Of Rab7 In The Pathogenesis Of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Type2b (Cmt2b) Disease, Soumik Basuray

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Disease is a group of peripheral neuropathies affecting 1 in 2500 individuals. It is characterized by progressive sensory loss and distal muscle weakness affecting mostly the lower extremities that lead to foot deformities. More than thirty genetic loci are affected in this disease, products of which are involved in axonal trafficking. Rab7 is one such gene that gets mutated in CMT Type2B disease. To date four missense mutants of Rab7 have been identified. L129F, K157N, N161T and V162M amino acid substitutions of Rab7 occur in highly conserved regions. Rab7 is a ubiquitous protein but only the peripheral nerves …

Next-Generation Sequencing: Acquisition, Analysis, And Assembly, Antoine Ho Jul 2013

Next-Generation Sequencing: Acquisition, Analysis, And Assembly, Antoine Ho

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The process of sequencing a genome involves many steps, and accordingly, this project contains work from each of those steps. Genome sequencing begins with acquisition of sequence data, therefore, a novel biochemistry was utilized and optimized for the Sequencing By Ligation (SBL) process. A cyclic SBL protocol was created that could be utilized to extend sequencing reads in both the 5' and 3' directions, for an increase in read length and thru-put. After sequence acquisition, there is the process of data analysis, and the focus shifted to creating software that could take sequence information and match up the individual reads …

Scaling Of Crop Diversity And Optimal Allocation Of Foodshed Infrastructure, Michael Chang Jul 2013

Scaling Of Crop Diversity And Optimal Allocation Of Foodshed Infrastructure, Michael Chang

Biology ETDs

Food hubs are organizations that manage the aggregation and distribution of local products, and are a small, but growing means to satisfy high demand for diverse, healthy diets. However, economic barriers inhibit small producers and distributors from developing mainstream, local consumer alternatives to industrial-scale products. To build foodshed, distribution hubs could help overcome these challenges by reducing costs through shared refrigeration, processing, and transportation infrastructure. However, there is no theory to help plan them. I present and test theory to allocate foodshed infrastructure based on insight by Dunn, et al. (2011) that Shannon diversity measured relative to a whole set …

The Effects Of Climate Change On Stream Invertebrates In Their Role As Biological Indicators And Responders To Disturbance, Anna T. Hamilton Jul 2013

The Effects Of Climate Change On Stream Invertebrates In Their Role As Biological Indicators And Responders To Disturbance, Anna T. Hamilton

Biology ETDs

Global climate models provide estimates of future changes in air temperature and precipitation patterns, drought, flooding, sea-level rise, and increases in the frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme heat and storm events. These climate changes will affect stream invertebrate communities directly, indirectly, and through interactions with other stressors, resulting in a range of biological responses, including species range shifts, losses and replacements, novel community compositions, and altered ecosystem functions and services. Effects will vary regionally and present heretofore unaccounted influences on biomonitoring, which water-quality agencies use to assess the status and health of ecosystems as required by the Clean Water …

Mhc And Mate Choice In Anolis Sagrei, Angela S. Hung Jul 2013

Mhc And Mate Choice In Anolis Sagrei, Angela S. Hung

Biology ETDs

The study of sexual selection saw its intrepid inception when Charles Darwin observed the earnest with which many male birds must court a female before she will, but often not, mate with him. His idea of the choosy female' was a radical one in the Victorian era when women were regarded as the 'passive sex. In the century and a half that followed, sexual selection driven by female choice is now widely accepted and strongly supported. Today, with emerging technologies, the nuances and complexities of sexual reproductive are finally coming to light. Female choice in two species is described here. …

Sympatric Speciation Is Reinforced By Predation, Parasite Load, Reproductive Character Displacement, And Sexual Selection In Two Species Flocks Of Pupfish (Cyprinodon Spp), Rhiannon J. D. West Jul 2013

Sympatric Speciation Is Reinforced By Predation, Parasite Load, Reproductive Character Displacement, And Sexual Selection In Two Species Flocks Of Pupfish (Cyprinodon Spp), Rhiannon J. D. West

Biology ETDs

Sympatric speciation, the divergence of one lineage into two or more lineages within one geographic range, is often driven by disruptive selection on niche utilization. While niche specialization is found in sympatrically speciated groups, it is often reinforced by other strong selective pressure. This dissertation examines the role of predation, morphology, mate choice, and parasite load in maintaining reproductive isolation in two sympatrically speciated species flocks of pupfish (Cyprinodon). The role that predation, morphology and male and female mate choice play in reproductive isolation is examined in the Bahamian species flock. To examine the role of predation, we focus on …

Inflammatory Cytokines Alter Normal Lipid Mobilization In Adipocytes, Nicholas Steven Card Jul 2013

Inflammatory Cytokines Alter Normal Lipid Mobilization In Adipocytes, Nicholas Steven Card

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Obesity is an increasing trend within the United States and the importance of addressing both causation and effects of obesity are becoming more important. It has been shown that environment, genetics, and social behavior factors can lead to an increased risk of obesity. Obesity has also been associated with several negative health concerns including increased risk for heart disease, cancer, poor nutrition, and diabetes, among others. Beyond identifying individual factors that may lead to obesity, and be associated with it, it is important to take into account complex obese biological systems which may have multiple factors compounding any health problems. …

Identification Of Genes Required For Differentiation Of Quiescent And Nonquiescent Cells In Stationary Phase Cultures Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Elaine E. Manzanilla Jul 2013

Identification Of Genes Required For Differentiation Of Quiescent And Nonquiescent Cells In Stationary Phase Cultures Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Elaine E. Manzanilla

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Cellular differentiation is an important process for the development and maintenance of an organism. Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) has been successful as a tool for important discoveries relating to eukaryotic cellular processes. Stationary phase yeast cultures have been found to differentiate into two major cell types with distinct phenotypes. This genome-wide study using pooled samples of the yeast homozygous deletion set has identified over 400 genes which are important for differentiation of stationary phase yeast. These genes are predominantly involved in mitochondrial function thereby supporting our hypothesis that mitochondrial function is integral to the differentiation process. In addition, further experimentation focused …

Association Of Vitamin D Deficiency With Prediabetes Among Elderly New Mexicans, Srilatha Sankarappan Jul 2013

Association Of Vitamin D Deficiency With Prediabetes Among Elderly New Mexicans, Srilatha Sankarappan

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

In New Mexico, the mortality rate due to diabetes is 1.5 times higher than the nation. Diabetes causes a huge healthcare burden. In 2012, the national cost due to diabetes was $245 billion. Prior studies have established a positive correlation between vitamin D deficiency and diabetes; whether the same relationship holds for prediabetes is not well studied. Our purpose of the study was to find whether there was an association between vitamin D deficiency and prediabetes. We also wanted to find out if the association was stronger among Hispanics than non-Hispanic whites (NHW). Our rationale was to delay the progression …

Next-Generation Sequencing For Biomedical Applications, Mingyan Xu Jul 2013

Next-Generation Sequencing For Biomedical Applications, Mingyan Xu

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Based on the development of current status of Next-Generation Sequencing technologies (NGS), I developed several technologies to improve NGS technologies and exampled to apply the NGS technology to biomedical sciences. In the first chapter, I overviewed most of the NGS technologies, described the characteristics of the technologies, and compared the pits and falls, as well as the applications. Based on the current development status, I developed Dual-Primer emulsion PCR (DPePCR) to simplify the library preparation and elongate the read length, and the details were illustrated in the chapter 2. To minimize the sequencing feature/template and improve sequencing throughput, I developed …

The Other's Other: Negotiating "Normativity" In Contemporary Photography From The United States, Corey Dzenko Jul 2013

The Other's Other: Negotiating "Normativity" In Contemporary Photography From The United States, Corey Dzenko

Art & Art History ETDs

Despite all of the recent attention paid to issues of identity in art history, mainstream ideals of normativity have yet to be fully analyzed and reclaimed as subject positions from which artistic examinations begin. As a symptom of larger culture, there often remains a lack of what sociologist Ruth Frankenberg refers to as cognizance' about the continuing role of normative ideals as they are assumed to be unmarked, or transcendent, positions. While all four of the case studies in this project visually challenge assumptions of normativity, the reception of the work and/or the artist's own descriptions negate some of the …

Changing Hearts And Minds: The Politics Of Sentimentality And The Cultural Production Of The Gay Family In New Mexico's Same-Sex Marriage Debate, Lavinia Magdalena Nicolae Jul 2013

Changing Hearts And Minds: The Politics Of Sentimentality And The Cultural Production Of The Gay Family In New Mexico's Same-Sex Marriage Debate, Lavinia Magdalena Nicolae

Anthropology ETDs

Starting in February 2004, in the aftermath of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsoms authorization of city clerks to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples, same-sex marriage and LGBT families moved to the center of American politics. In the same month New Mexico succeeded in making its own mark on the national debate over same-sex marriage as Victoria Dunlap, the Sandoval County clerk, issued marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. The resulting sixty-four same-sex marriages incited New Mexico gay and lesbian activism around the issue of marriage and launched civil rights and moral debates that dominated the New …

The Bioarchaeology Of Changes In Social Stratification, Warfare, And Habitual Activities Among Iron Age Samnites Of Central Italy, Vitale Sparacello Jul 2013

The Bioarchaeology Of Changes In Social Stratification, Warfare, And Habitual Activities Among Iron Age Samnites Of Central Italy, Vitale Sparacello

Anthropology ETDs

This study uses a bioarchaeological approach to investigate the behavioral and social correlates of changes in skeletal properties during the Iron Age of central Italy. This was a period of demographic growth, increase in sociopolitical complexity, and social stratification. Early states were developing from simpler forms of social aggregation, and expansionistic, large-scale warfare was beginning. I analyzed the mechanical properties of Iron Age human skeletons (844 individuals) from 11 necropoleis belonging to the Oscan ethno-linguistic group (Samnites). The analysis of grave goods allowed for a division of individuals by status categories. Iron Age samples show an increase in stature compared …

Crosstalk Between Adipocytes And Immune Cells In Adipose Tissue In An Obese Inflammatory State: Role Of Contact-Mediated Signaling, Carolina Franco Nitta Jul 2013

Crosstalk Between Adipocytes And Immune Cells In Adipose Tissue In An Obese Inflammatory State: Role Of Contact-Mediated Signaling, Carolina Franco Nitta

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Obesity is defined as heightened fat accumulation leading to health impairments. It has been directly correlated to cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes mellitus, and cancer. Heightened cytokine levels are found in serum and adipose tissue of obese subjects, including TNFα (tumor necrosis factor alpha), IL-6 (interleukin-6), and MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1), being characterized as a chronic low-grade inflammatory disease. In this dissertation, I have generated a novel co-culture model between adipocytes and immune cells (derived from splenocytes) that mimics inflammation seen in obese adipose tissue. This co-culture model allows for distinct evaluation between secreted paracrine factors (indirect cultures) and these …

The Immunological Mechanisms Of Influenza Vaccination: A Comparison Between A Seasonal Subunit Vaccine And An H5n1 Subunit Vaccine With And Without Alum Adjuvant, Sarah Elizabeth Vaughan Jul 2013

The Immunological Mechanisms Of Influenza Vaccination: A Comparison Between A Seasonal Subunit Vaccine And An H5n1 Subunit Vaccine With And Without Alum Adjuvant, Sarah Elizabeth Vaughan

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is an emerging infectious virus with a 60% fatality rate in humans. In the United States, a vaccine for H5N1 has been developed and stockpiled using FDA approved methods for seasonal vaccines; however, the H5N1 vaccine was shown to be less immunogenic than seasonal vaccines when evaluated in clinical trials. Adjuvants can be used to enhance the immune response to antigens. For the studies described herein, a lethal mouse model of H5N1 infection was utilized to examine the immune response to the H5N1 vaccine with and without the addition of an alum adjuvant, and …

Visual Activity Evoked By Infrared In Humans After Dark Adaptation, Leslie Olivia Hopkins Jul 2013

Visual Activity Evoked By Infrared In Humans After Dark Adaptation, Leslie Olivia Hopkins

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

We evaluated the visual response to infrared (IR) in humans after dark adaptation. In seven adult participants, visual perception, visual sensitivity, and the visual response to IR after light adaptation were tested. Over the course of dark adaptation, we found visual perception and sensitivity to our experimental IR stimulus increased, while the relative IR intensity necessary for perception decreased. Visual perception of the IR stimulus was abolished during a transient light exposure; however, when turned back off, perception to the IR stimulus returned for all participants. These novel findings may be relevant for both pre-clinical and clinical visual research.

Development Of Cd19 Binding Reagents For Targeted Nanoparticles, Jason Hugh Rogers Jul 2013

Development Of Cd19 Binding Reagents For Targeted Nanoparticles, Jason Hugh Rogers

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

B-cell malignancies like Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL), which often have high numbers of malignant cells in circulation in the blood would be an excellent model system for the early preclinical development and testing of targeted small particle therapeutics. We selected the transmembrane protein CD19 (Cluster of Differentiation 19) as one potential promising target due to its remarkably common over-expression on nearly every case of B-ALL, and on many other types of leukemias and lymphomas with varying frequency. We attempted to create a panel of appropriate CD19-specific targeting reagents for attachment to the surface of perhaps many different small particle platforms …

Elastomeric Capture Microparticles (Ecµps) And Their Use With Acoustophoresis To Perform Affinity Capture Assays, Kevin Wallace Cushing Jul 2013

Elastomeric Capture Microparticles (Ecµps) And Their Use With Acoustophoresis To Perform Affinity Capture Assays, Kevin Wallace Cushing

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

This dissertation describes the development of elastomeric capture microparticles (ECµPs) and their use with acoustophoresis to perform affinity capture assays. ECµPs that function as negative acoustic contrast particles were developed by crosslinking emulsion-based droplets composed of commercially available silicone precursors followed by functionalization with avidin/biotin reagents. The size distribution of the ECµPs was very broad or narrow depending on the emulsion system that was used during the synthesis process. Elastomeric particles exhibited a very broad size distribution when a bulk-emulsion process was used; however, when microfluidic systems were utilized, their size distribution became comparatively narrow. The functionalization of elastomeric particles …

Contested Knowledges: A Rhetorical Analysis Of 'Eclipses For Austin' By Pablo Vargas Lugo At The Intersection Of Art And Science, Carlos Rodrigo Guzman

Communication ETDs

The debate on whether art has any cognitive value might be traced to the texts of early philosophers and theorists who have approached the matter. In general, art has been constrained to contemplation and aesthetic experience while its contribution to knowledge is often disregarded. Science, on the other hand, constitutes the main system of organized knowledge production and enunciation. Contemporary artistic practices that address scientific knowledge tend to reformulate the latter in order to either produce new experiences with it or expand its cognitive capabilities. The works produced by these practices serve as artifacts that expose science's biases, axiomatic tenets, …

Interactive Exploration Of Multitask Dependency Networks, Diane Oyen Jul 2013

Interactive Exploration Of Multitask Dependency Networks, Diane Oyen

Computer Science ETDs

Scientists increasingly depend on machine learning algorithms to discover patterns in complex data. Two examples addressed in this dissertation are identifying how information sharing among regions of the brain develops due to learning; and, learning dependency networks of blood proteins associated with cancer. Dependency networks, or graphical models, are learned from the observed data in order to make comparisons between the sub-populations of the dataset. Rarely is there sufficient data to infer robust individual networks for each sub-population. The multiple networks must be considered simultaneously; exploding the hypothesis space of the learning problem. Exploring this complex solution space requires input …

Revegetation Guidelines For Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (Swppp) Closure In Central New Mexico, Jennifer Payne-Ross Jun 2013

Revegetation Guidelines For Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (Swppp) Closure In Central New Mexico, Jennifer Payne-Ross

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

A major challenge for construction stormwater permit holders in New Mexico is the closure of their Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) through successful revegetation of the post-construction sites. Successful revegetation of native plants is a difficult task to achieve. Without proper guidance, the SWPPP permit closure goal is exceptionally difficult to achieve in New Mexico. This paper examines comprehensive seeding guidance designed for contractors or other individuals without seeding experience that are responsible for permanent soil stabilization. When accurately followed and appropriately budgeted, the seeding guidance document developed in conjunction with this paper and presented in Appendix I should greatly …
