Proposed Method For Measuring The Let Of Radiotherapeutic Particle Beams, Stephen D. Bello Nov 2017

Proposed Method For Measuring The Let Of Radiotherapeutic Particle Beams, Stephen D. Bello

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The Bragg peak geometry of the depth dose distributions for hadrons allows for precise and effective dose delivery to tumors while sparing neighboring healthy tissue. Further, compared against other forms of radiotherapeutic treatments, such as electron beam therapy (EBT) or photons (x and \(\gamma\)-rays), hadrons create denser ionization events along the particle track, which induces irreparable damage to DNA, and thus are more effective at inactivating cancerous cells. The measurement of radiation's ability to inactivate cellular reproduction is the relative biological effectiveness (RBE). A quality related to the RBE that is a measurable physical property is the linear energy transfer …

Arresting Narratives: Incommensurability, Policing, And Settler Security, Darcy H. Brazen

American Studies ETDs

Settler colonialism is interrogated through the practice of arrest. Case studies of arrests at Standing Rock validate the historical salience of settler colonialism as a structure enabling Indigenous elimination and settler replacement that is dependent upon arrest to maintain and enhance settler lives and the settler project through unfettered access to Native land and resources for capital accumulation. Arrest is analyzed in relationship to statehood initiatives, the procuring of settler security, frontier feminism, and road signage in the masculine zones of travel in 1930s North Dakota. Contemporaneous reports from Standing Rock, the memoirs of Elaine Goodale Eastman and newspaper articles …

Suppurative Complications Of Acute Hematogenous Osteomyelitis In Children, Jennifer J. Johnston, Cristina Murray-Krezan, Walter N. Dehority Nov 2017

Suppurative Complications Of Acute Hematogenous Osteomyelitis In Children, Jennifer J. Johnston, Cristina Murray-Krezan, Walter N. Dehority

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

We carried out a case-control study in children with acute hematogenous osteomyelitis (AHO) with and without suppurative complications discharged from our institution over an 11-year period to test the hypothesis that abscess formation was associated with a delayed presentation to care. Of 102 children with AHO, 54 abscesses were documented in 46 patients (25 bone, 29 muscle). A delay in presentation was not associated with abscess formation (6.5 vs. 5.0 days, P=0.26). Overall, 78% of all bone abscesses were visible on initial MRI. Consistent use of MRI at presentation may identify children with suppurative complications of AHO.

Diatom Communities Of Travertine-Precipitating Springs On A Gradient Of Anthropogenic Disturbance In The Sandia Mountains, New Mexico, Kathryn E. Mendoza

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Carbonate-rich waters of travertine-precipitating springs facilitate unique physiochemical environments that support distinct diatom species assemblages adapted to the environmental stress of constant carbonate precipitation. Diatom communities in spring systems may be further limited by the impacts of historical and ongoing anthropogenic disturbance, which includes recreational activity and hydrologic modification of springs using spring boxes and wells. This study focused on impacts of water chemistry and anthropogenic disturbance on diatom assemblages found in travertine-precipitating springs. Data were collected in the fall of 2016 and spring of 2017 at eight spring sites, including six known to precipitate travertine, in the Sandia Mountains …

Exploring Biological Heterogeneity And Its Consequences At Tissue And Cellular Scales Through Mathematical And Computational Modeling, Romica Kerketta

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

This dissertation explores the effects of heterogeneity across different biological scales in cancer as well as normal cells. At the tissue scale, we investigated the variability present in the tumor microenvironment and its effect on patient chemotherapeutic outcomes using a mathematical model of drug transport. We found that parameters such as tumor blood perfusion and radius of blood vessel had an impact on the tumor cytotoxicity. This indicated that the physical microenvironment of the tumor is an important regulator of the tumor response to chemotherapy. At the cellular scale, we investigated the heterogeneity present on the membrane landscape of ErbB2 …

Episodic Memory Via Spans And Cospans: A Hierarchy Of Spatiotemporal Colimits, Michael John Healy Ms, Thomas Preston Caudell Phd Aug 2017

Episodic Memory Via Spans And Cospans: A Hierarchy Of Spatiotemporal Colimits, Michael John Healy Ms, Thomas Preston Caudell Phd

Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We introduce a category-theoretic account of episodic memory as an outgrowth of an existing mathematical theory of the semantics of neural networks. We propose that neu- ral systems which can be said to have episodic memory represent sequences of events and their associated information within a hierarchy of concepts, represented in their neu- ral networks. In the categorical model presented here, the hierarchy is based upon col- imits. Colimits “put everything together” mathematically, and appear throughout many categories. The event-sequence colimits can be visualized as assemblies of categorical structures known as spans and cospans. A string of cospans formalizes a …

Hydrogen Sulfide Regulation Of Mesenteric Vascular Resistance, Adelaeda Barrera, Laura Gonzalez Bosc, Jay Naik, Perenkita Mendiola, Nancy L. Kanagy Jul 2017

Hydrogen Sulfide Regulation Of Mesenteric Vascular Resistance, Adelaeda Barrera, Laura Gonzalez Bosc, Jay Naik, Perenkita Mendiola, Nancy L. Kanagy

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Sleep apnea, recurrent obstruction of the upper airway leads to sleep fragmentation and intermittent hypoxia (IH). In animal studies, IH causes wake-time hypertension by elevating vascular resistance due in part to decreased production of the vasodilator, hydrogen sulfide (H2S). However, much is unknown about where and how H2S acts. Inhibiting cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) to prevent H2S synthesis augments constriction in isolated mesenteric arteries, but H2S regulation of resistance in this vascular bed in vivo is unknown. The goal of this study was to evaluate CSE regulation of blood flow and resistance in …

Novel Design Strategies For Platinum-Containing Conjugated Polymers And Small Molecules For Organic Solar Cells, Wenhan He Jul 2017

Novel Design Strategies For Platinum-Containing Conjugated Polymers And Small Molecules For Organic Solar Cells, Wenhan He

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Current state-of-the-art organic solar cells (OSCs) adopt the strategy of using conjugated polymers or small molecules as donors and fullerene derivatives as acceptors in their active layers. Regarding to the donors of interest, the conjugated polymers and small molecules coupled with heavy metals have been less explored compared to their counterparts. Among various transition metal complexes applied, Pt(II) complexes are unique because of their intrinsic square planar geometries and ability to serve as building blocks for conjugated systems. Furthermore, the heavy metal Pt facilitates the formation of triplet excitons with longer life times through spin-orbital coupling which are of benefit …

ABSTRACT In this study I investigated the relationships between male primary teachers who have adopted the ethic of care as an organizing principle in their work with children, and the ways in which caring reveals itself through their behaviors, words, and general relationships with their students. Case study methodology was used with two veteran teachers working in primary grade classrooms. Case study theory was used to analyze interviews, classroom observations, and student verbal and behavioral interactions with their teacher and each other. Case study analysis revealed six significant findings.

Seeking An Operational Definition Of Dieting: A Daily Diary Study, Elizabeth Anne Mclaughlin Jul 2017

Seeking An Operational Definition Of Dieting: A Daily Diary Study, Elizabeth Anne Mclaughlin

Psychology ETDs

Dieting is commonly considered a weight loss technique, but research consistently shows that it does not result in weight loss. Thirty to fifty percent of women report that they are dieting at any given time, typically by responding to a single “yes/no” item asking whether they are dieting. To explain why dieting may not result in weight loss, a detailed picture was needed as to people’s behavior when they report that they are dieting, including weight loss strategies and dietary intake. Other constructs previously studied as similar to dieting were “watching what I eat” and “eating healthy.” More information was …
