Linking Climate Change And Mortality In Piñon-Juniper Woodlands, From Leaf To Ecosystem, Amanda I. Liebrecht
Linking Climate Change And Mortality In Piñon-Juniper Woodlands, From Leaf To Ecosystem, Amanda I. Liebrecht
Biology ETDs
As global climate changes, the Southwestern US is predicted to experience more frequent and intense drought events. Extreme droughts can drive decreases in both physiological and ecosystem function, and can result in widespread tree mortality. Piñon-juniper (PJ) woodlands are a prevalent ecosystem in the region, co-dominated by two tree species, piñon (Pinus edulis) and juniper (Juniperus monosperma). Drought-induced piñon mortality has occurred over the past few decades, coinciding with outbreaks of a piñon-specific bark beetle. Piñon and juniper have different hydraulic strategies (isohydry and anisohydry, respectively) that should affect the way each species responds to drought. …
Understanding Patterns Of Diversity And Evolution In Mainland Anolis Lizards, Levi Nathaniel Gray
Understanding Patterns Of Diversity And Evolution In Mainland Anolis Lizards, Levi Nathaniel Gray
Biology ETDs
Patterns of organismal diversity and evolution are often difficult to interpret with a high level of confidence. The number of mechanisms and processes that contribute to shaping patterns of diversity is extensive and is reflected in the many methods researchers have used to infer causation. Taxonomic groups that are well-studied can offer more precise interpretation of pattern and process due to the considerable amount of research addressing ecology, natural history, and behavior of the organisms.
In this dissertation, I explore patterns of phylogenetic and phenotypic variation in Anolis lizards (anoles) by testing hypotheses that could have led to the observed …
High-Throughput Automated Multi-Target Super-Resolution Imaging, Farzin Farzam
High-Throughput Automated Multi-Target Super-Resolution Imaging, Farzin Farzam
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Super-resolution microscopy techniques developed through the past few decades enable us to surpass the classical diffraction limit of light, and thus open new doors to investigate the formerly inaccessible world of nanometer-sized objects. Most importantly, by using super-resolution microscopy, one can visualize sub-cellular structures in the range of 10 to 200 nm. At this range, we can investigate exciting problems in biology and medicine by visualizing protein-protein interactions and spatiotemporal analysis of structures of interest on the surface or inside cells. These techniques (collectively known as nanoscopy) have a high impact on understanding and solving biological questions. This dissertation starts …
Revealing Biotic Diversity: How Do Complex Environments Influence Human Schistosomiasis In A Hyperendemic Area, Martina Rose Laidemitt
Revealing Biotic Diversity: How Do Complex Environments Influence Human Schistosomiasis In A Hyperendemic Area, Martina Rose Laidemitt
Biology ETDs
Human schistosomiasis is one of the great neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) of our time with more than 206 million individuals infected and more than 90% of those infected reside in Sub-Saharan Africa (WHO 2017). Chemotherapy based control programs play an essential role in contributing to the elimination of human schistosomiasis; however, there is an increasing consensus that chemotherapy needs to be supplemented by other means if interruption of transmission and elimination are to be achieved. Given this situation, the focus of this dissertation was to better understand transmission dynamics in a hyperendemic setting in western Kenya and to find alternative …
Effect Of Exercise Interventions On Fatigue For Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Julien Succar
Effect Of Exercise Interventions On Fatigue For Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Julien Succar
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the effect of different exercise interventions on fatigue in patients with breast cancer undergoing active therapy. We found that exercise generally improves fatigue outcomes at 12 weeks after initiation of the exercise intervention. Aerobic exercise intervention improved fatigue, but anaerobic and combination regimens did not show improvement compared to controls. Moreover, no exercise intensity was found to be superior compared to controls. Our findings revealed that there is a need for standardization of exercise regimens in studies in order to identify the most effective exercise regimen.
Managing Riparian Succession And Stabilizing Native Plant Assemblages In The Middle Rio Grande State Park, Roman M. Lopez
Managing Riparian Succession And Stabilizing Native Plant Assemblages In The Middle Rio Grande State Park, Roman M. Lopez
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Anthropogenic alterations of hydro geomorphological conditions of the Rio Grande River have changed the processes that have created the mosaic of riparian habitats valuable for ecosystem functioning, wildlife, and enjoyment by residents. These changes have created conditions that have increased the frequency of historically unprecedented disturbances such as fire and aggressive invasion of exotic species. Restoration activities and planning efforts have begun to reverse these effects, yet large areas of the Middle Rio Grande State Park, commonly called the Bosque, are still being affected by ecosystem changes. Studies of the Rio Grande and other Riparian corridors suggest that lack of …
Mindfulness In The Workplace: Mindful Self-Regulation, Sophia M. Bowers
Mindfulness In The Workplace: Mindful Self-Regulation, Sophia M. Bowers
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
Organizations are under pressure to perform and adapt to an ever-changing environment, creating stress on the employees, translating to direct and indirect costs to the organization. Mindfulness is recognized as an effective approach to managing stress, and has benefits on cognition, attention, and well-being, but limited research has investigated how individuals integrate mindfulness into their workplaces, which is the purpose of this study. The primary research question in this study asked how mindfulness workplace practice help individuals to self-regulate a) attention or thoughts, b) emotions, and c) both attention or thoughts and emotions and what the associated benefits are in …
New Geochemical And Isotopic Approaches To Shallow Crust Landform Evolution, David Decker
New Geochemical And Isotopic Approaches To Shallow Crust Landform Evolution, David Decker
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Many researchers have studied the Guadalupe Mountains in detail and starting with King (1948), many of them have speculated about the timing of the uplift of the Guadalupe block. There are several competing hypotheses including Laramide, Basin and Range, and Rio Grande Rifting uplift scenarios. Using uranium-lead dating of scalenohedral spar found in small vug caves throughout the study area, I have dated the episodes of spar formation to two major phases, 36 to 33 Ma and 30 to 27 Ma. These two episodes of spar formation are in good agreement with the time frame of the ignimbrite flare up …

Little Red Riding Hood In The Dialogic Tension Of Wolf Politics In The U.S. West, Kaisa T. Lappalainen
Little Red Riding Hood In The Dialogic Tension Of Wolf Politics In The U.S. West, Kaisa T. Lappalainen
American Studies ETDs
The reintroduction of wolves opened a new chapter in the story of wolves in the U.S. West. But what the conservation community considers moral progress, welcoming the once violently eradicated wolves as an important part of a healthy ecosystem, those opposing wolf restoration consider their return a decivilizing, regressive move back to a by-gone era. In the contentious discourse over wolf politics, the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood is used as a common metaphor; its prevalence and persistence in this discourse indicates that more than an innocuous children’s bedtime story is in question.

How A Brownfield Redevelopment Planning Effort In Gallup Resulted In A New Regulation For Vapor Intrusion In New Mexico, Michelle G. Hunter
How A Brownfield Redevelopment Planning Effort In Gallup Resulted In A New Regulation For Vapor Intrusion In New Mexico, Michelle G. Hunter
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The Puerco River basin has, within its confines, one small city, Gallup, New Mexico. Gallup is located within close proximity to the Navajo Nation, and many Navajo Nation members live and work in Gallup and need affordable housing. A local Gallup non-profit proposed a multi-family housing development on a long-vacant, and blighted property in the middle of downtown Gallup. After several environmental assessment investigations, the developer discovered significant groundwater contamination, from an adjacent dry cleaner, that had the potential to migrate into the indoor air at the future housing facility. A series of brownfield assessment, planning, and cleanup efforts resulted …
Reconstructing Landscape Use Patterns Using Strontium Isotope Ratios, Marian Irene Hamilton
Reconstructing Landscape Use Patterns Using Strontium Isotope Ratios, Marian Irene Hamilton
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation uses modern habitats and fauna to model the variability and predictive power of strontium isotope ratios in identifying dispersal patterns in primates and habitat preference in primate and non-primate fauna. It concludes that there are significant isotopic differences between gallery forest and xeric grassland habitats in the same area and that these differences are reflected in fauna with habitat preferences for one or the other. It also identifies the most reliable methodological approaches for identifying the philopatric and dispersing sex in primate communities. Finally, it applies this methodological recommendation to strontium isotope data from South African hominins, concluding …
Designing Synthetic Environments To Control Valvular Interstital Cells In Vitro, Kent E. Coombs
Designing Synthetic Environments To Control Valvular Interstital Cells In Vitro, Kent E. Coombs
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Aortic valve disease (AVD) is a large contributor to health costs in the United States affecting 2.8% of the population greater than 75 years old. With a growing elderly population due to medical advances, AVD will continue to rise in prevalence over time. Current treatments for AVD are insufficient due to a lack of preventative therapies and the bioprosthetic valves used for surgical replacement have major limitations. Tissue engineered heart valves (TEHVs) present an ideal solution to current AVD needs because of their biocompatibility, capability to integrate with the host’s tissue, and ability to utilize the natural repair mechanisms of …
Development Of New Useful Methods For Aldehyde Synthesis And Its Application In Synthesis, He Huang
Development Of New Useful Methods For Aldehyde Synthesis And Its Application In Synthesis, He Huang
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Development of sustainable synthetic technologies for molecular construction is an important but formidably challenging task in modern organic synthesis. Aldehyde synthesis represents a long-standing interest in synthesis because of the synthetic utility. Classic methods for aldehyde synthesis have the drawbacks of the use of harsh reaction conditions, poor atom-economy and multi-step operation, and production of stoichiometric amount of chemical wastes. The state-of-the-art strategies employ transition metal complexes as catalysts to promote formylation reactions. The concerns of catalyst cost, operation complexity and poor functional group tolerance demands more efficient synthetic technologies. My Ph.D. study focuses on design of conceptually novel catalytic …
Intestinal Permeability And Microbial Dysbiosis In Acute Coronary Syndrome (Miacs Study), Tarik Z. Alhmoud
Intestinal Permeability And Microbial Dysbiosis In Acute Coronary Syndrome (Miacs Study), Tarik Z. Alhmoud
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Background: Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Metabolic syndrome and obesity are major risk factors for atherosclerosis and ACS. Dysbiosis plays an important role in metabolic syndrome and obesity. Studies show a markedly increased risk of heart attacks in patients with high levels of the pro-atherogenic metabolite trimethylamine-N-Oxide (TMAO). TMAO is produced by the intestinal microbial flora through metabolism of dietary phospholipids; Gram-negative bacteria (Phylum Proteobacteria) is the major source of TMAO metabolism. Patients with obesity and metabolic syndrome have a defective intestinal tight-junctional (TJ) barrier, which allows paracellular permeation of luminal antigens such …

Exploration Of The Qualities And Interactions Of Post-Secondary Faculty Identified As Exemplary By Students With Support Services, Joan E. Green
Special Education ETDs
Recent statistics indicate that approximately 11% of undergraduate college students seek out disability support services (National Center for Education Statistics, 20015). The review of research indicated a lack of research regarding faculty in postsecondary education and their knowledge of disabilities and services, experiences of individuals with disabilities, and in particular, experiences and interactions toward students with support services attending postsecondary educational institutions. The purpose of this case study was to explore the classroom experiences of seven faculty nominated by students with support services as exemplary at a four-year public university. The semi-structured interviews focused on the abilities of students with …
Transgender Murder Memorials: A Call For Intersectionality And Trans Livability, Lazarus Nance Letcher
Transgender Murder Memorials: A Call For Intersectionality And Trans Livability, Lazarus Nance Letcher
American Studies ETDs
The number of transgender folks in the United States lost to murder increases every year. These murders have recently gained more recognition, with the memorials moving from trans-run organizations and communities to mainstream LGBTQ groups. Using visual culture and discourse analysis of four transgender murder memorials, I argue there are problematic trends of centering a white and cisgender audience, and lack of acknowledging trans livability. Memorials like Transgender Day of Remembrance take place every year, and though the oldest memorial for trans death in the country and most well known, the event creates a spectacle of violence for cisgender consumption …
The Effect Of Sublingual Testosterone On Ischemic Pain Sensitivity, Chance Strenth

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Type II polyketides (PK-II) has made up a class of natural products that are structurally diverse and are clinically useful due to their wide-range of bioactivity. The work described in this dissertation focuses on developing approaches to facilitate our understanding of sequence-function relationships of PK-II biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). We have systematically summarized the previous characterizations of enzymes involved in the core structure biosynthesis, which have set a foundation for our developments of approaches to discover organisms harboring novel enzymes responsible for novel PK-II molecules. We have successfully developed bioinformatics tools to globally mine the PK-II BGCs in the NCBI …
Prevalence Of Artemisinin Resistance Associated Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In Kenyan Isolates, Elizabeth M. Glenn
Prevalence Of Artemisinin Resistance Associated Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In Kenyan Isolates, Elizabeth M. Glenn
Biology ETDs
Malaria has had an unspeakable toll on human economy and wellbeing. Every year, there are approximately 212 million malaria infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum leading to 429,000 deaths, the vast majority of which occur in sub-Saharan Africa where the parasite is endemic. Decades of widespread use, and probable misuse, of antimalarial drugs has created extraordinary selective pressure on the parasite and made many formerly effective drugs ineffective. Currently, artemisinin and artemisinin derivatives are the most effective treatment available but resistance to dihydroartemisinin (DHA), the active ingredient, is emerging. Continued monitoring for genetic mutations linked with resistance is vital to global …
Factors That Determine Spreading Depolarization Propagation In Brain Slices, Linday Selters
Factors That Determine Spreading Depolarization Propagation In Brain Slices, Linday Selters
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
In the US alone, more than 750,000 people had a stroke in 2017, more than 1.7 million reported a traumatic brain injury, and more than 9 million suffered from migraines with aura. While all three of these neurological conditions have vastly different causes and possible outcomes they all have a common phenomenon occurring within the brain. A wave that slowly propagates through grey matter, hitting neurons with a large burst of energy, opening them up to a flood of ions and silencing them for an extended period of time. These waves are known as spreading depolarizations (SD). Within well-nourished tissue, …

In this essay, I review my development as a playwright in the MFA Dramatic Writing program and examine the shifting, overlapping goals of playwright-as-educator and playwright-as-entertainer. In Part One, I position my academic exploration of trauma in relation to ethics in journalism, embodied knowledge, and intersectional feminism and outline my creative experiments in staging trauma through the process of witnessing, retelling, and abstraction. In Part Two, I detail the artistic and personal roots of my dissertation play, The Great Maverick Adventure of 2007, and the structural and dramaturgical tools I employed to rebuild a sense of play and theatricality …
Seasonal Shifts In C3 And C4 Resource Use By A Small Mammal Community Under Changing Precipitation Regimes, Alaina Dianne Pershall
Seasonal Shifts In C3 And C4 Resource Use By A Small Mammal Community Under Changing Precipitation Regimes, Alaina Dianne Pershall
Biology ETDs
In light of climate change and projections of increasing temperatures and aridity in the North American southwest, it is essential to understand how consumer populations will respond to changes in the resource landscape. Rainfall varies in timing and intensity and therefore the timing, proportion, phenology, and abundance of C3 and C4 plant resources vary seasonally and annually. Here we examine rodent resource use in the Chihuahuan desert and focus on two distinct precipitation pulses in this system, where spring C3 plants increase production in response to winter rains and C4 plants respond to summer monsoons. We …
Evaluating The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor As A Target For Pharmacologic Activity Of Repurposed Drugs, Teofilo Borunda Duque
Evaluating The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor As A Target For Pharmacologic Activity Of Repurposed Drugs, Teofilo Borunda Duque
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
The discovery of new pharmacologic targets is important for the advancement of pharmacotherapy and identification of new indications for current drugs. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a physiologic sensor of both chemical environmental pollutants and ligands of natural origin. Given the broad spectrum of ligands that activate the AHR and its relationship with toxicology, the AHR is not thought to be a traditional target for pharmacotherapy. However, multiple studies have shown potential for the AHR as a novel pharmacologic target Therefore, identifying less toxic agents that modulate the AHR may elucidate mechanisms for pharmacological targeting of the AHR. The …

Using Δ13c, Δ15n, And Δ2h To Better Understand The Ecology Of Green Sea Turtles, Laura Pagès Barceló
Biology ETDs
Many green sea turtle populations are slowly recuperating from a recent severe decline due to anthropogenic factors including human consumption and mortality related to the fishing industry. Despite being charismatic animals that have been extensively studied, there is still a limited understanding of their feeding strategies and diet plasticity. This research explores the use of hydrogen isotopes in marine ecosystems to better understand green sea turtle ecology. This study is presented in two chapters: I first examined the trophic discrimination factor (D2HNET) for hydrogen isotope (d2H) as a tool to correct hydrogen isotope data …
Water Quality Assessment In The Santa Fe River: Tracking Pollution Sources Via Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction Analysis, Hayley Aurora Hajic
Water Quality Assessment In The Santa Fe River: Tracking Pollution Sources Via Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction Analysis, Hayley Aurora Hajic
Geography ETDs
Microbial contamination affects many water bodies in the United States and pathogens associated with contamination pose a threat to human health. While the nation’s lakes, streams and rivers have been monitored for decades, many still do not meet the requirements of the 1972 Clean Water Act. Due to the number of pathogens that occur in water bodies, it is not feasible to directly monitor all of them. Instead of testing for a plethora of pathogens, it is standard practice for water divisions to monitor fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) as a proxy to determine water quality. There are significant flaws, however, …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of The Second Pyrolysis On The Chemistry, Morphology, And Performance Of Iron-Nicarbazin Catalysts, Elizabeth B. Weiler
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and sustainable alternative to petroleum-based power sources to the transportation sector. However, slow electrochemical reactions at the cathode of these fuel cell prevent the technology from being competitive. Iron-nitrogen-carbon based catalysts have emerged as a viable answer to this problem, yet further progress is needed to improve their performance beyond that of current state-of-the-art platinum-based catalysts, which are economically and geopolitically impractical to be a final solution. Currently, a two-step high temperature pyrolysis method has proven a promising way to synthesize iron-nitrogen-carbon catalysts for optimized performance, but there is a …

Development Of A Positron-Emitting Surrogate Microsphere For Image-Based Dosimetry In Yttrium-90 Radioembolization Therapy, Gregory D. Chambers
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
Radioembolization of liver tumors using yttrium-90 (Y-90) labeled microspheres is a proven method of treatment. The primary decay mode of Y-90 is beta-minus decay. The electrons produced during decay deliver a cytotoxic radiation dose in a localized volume. The radiation dose is sufficient to kill tumor cells yet spare the normal liver. The Y-90 microspheres are delivered via a catheter that has been placed in an artery that supplies blood to the tumor. Microspheres are injected and the blood distributes the microspheres. The current practice involves two separate procedures. The first procedure is an assessment of the vasculature of the …
