Mechanisms Of Arsenic-Induced Suppression Of Early Red Blood Cell Development, Sebastian Medina
Mechanisms Of Arsenic-Induced Suppression Of Early Red Blood Cell Development, Sebastian Medina
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Anemia adversely impacts the health of more than a billion people worldwide. A strong association between anemia and arsenic exposure has been reported in epidemiological studies from multiple countries. However, the mechanistic bases for the association between arsenic exposure and anemia is not fully understood. In this study, we found an inverse association between drinking water arsenic exposures and clinical indicators of anemia (i.e., red blood cell counts and hematocrit/packet cell volumes) in a cohort of men from rural Bangladesh enrolled in the Health Effects of Arsenic Longitudinal Study.
Follow-up studies in mice, revealed that 60-day exposure to trivalent inorganic …
Informativeness Of Dental Morphology In Ancestry Estimation In African Americans, Jessica M. Gross, Heather J H Edgar
Informativeness Of Dental Morphology In Ancestry Estimation In African Americans, Jessica M. Gross, Heather J H Edgar
Pathology Research and Scholarship
OBJECTIVES: Our objective is to assess the informativeness of dental morphology in estimating biogeographic ancestry in African Americans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data are 62 dental morphological traits scored as nondichotomized and dichotomized in 797 individuals, 992,601 SNPs from 271 individuals, and 645 STRs from 177 individuals. Each dataset consists of Africans, Europeans, and African Americans. For each dataset, we summed Fisher Information (FI), then used STRUCTURE to estimate ancestry.
RESULTS: Total FI was highest for SNPs, followed by STRs, nondichotomized dental traits, and dichotomized dental traits. For both genetic datasets, Africans and Europeans fell into two distinctive clusters with …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in healthy populations have identified variants associated with erythrocyte traits, but genetic causes of hemoglobin variation in children with CKD are incompletely understood.
METHODS: The Pediatric Investigation of Genetic Factors Linked with Renal Progression (PediGFR) Consortium comprises three pediatric CKD cohorts: Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD), Effect of Strict Blood Pressure Control and ACE Inhibition on the Progression of CRF in Pediatric Patients (ESCAPE), and Cardiovascular Comorbidity in Children with CKD (4C). We performed cross-sectional and longitudinal association studies of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 1125 patients.
RESULTS: Children of European (n = 725) or …

Remark On Creatio Ex Nihilo, Intelligent Design And Emergence Philosophy Approaches To Origin Of The Universe, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
It is known that the Big Bang theory was based on the concept of creation ex nihilo, after ancient Greek philosophers. In this paper, we will make few remark on the concept of creatio ex nihilo (as a commentary to a recent paper by Kalachanis, Athanasios Anastasiou, Ioannis Kostikas, Efstratios Theodossious and Мilan S. Dimitrijevi), as well as two other approaches, i.e. Intelligent Design and Emergence Theory by Clayton/Yong. As continuation of our recent paper to appear in forthcoming issue of J. Asia Mathematika, we argue that beside the above three approaches, a new concept called creatio ex-rotatione offers a …
Reaction Of Titanium Subhydride With Multiple Passivating Gasses, Erik C. Strobert Jr
Reaction Of Titanium Subhydride With Multiple Passivating Gasses, Erik C. Strobert Jr
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Sandia National Laboratories has used substoichiometric titanium hydride as a pyrotechnic fuel for decades. Production of titanium subhydride requires partial dehydriding of titanium hydride powder and subsequent chemical passivation to render the resultant bare titanium surface nonreactive and the powder non-pyrophoric. Novel passivation techniques, using a gas other than air, have been suggested in the past but have never been investigated. This work examines the reaction kinetics of titanium subhydride with three passivating agents, nitrogen, oxygen, and propane. These passivation experiments took place under isothermal conditions (420 ˚C) with varied dehydriding and passivation time periods. It was found that the …

Understanding And Improving Patient Satisfaction In Orthopaedic Surgical Procedures: A Review, Paul J. Johnson
Understanding And Improving Patient Satisfaction In Orthopaedic Surgical Procedures: A Review, Paul J. Johnson
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Orthopaedic surgeons and their hospitals are being evaluated and reimbursed according to their ability to provide patient satisfaction. It behooves physicians to learn how patient satisfaction is evaluated, how patient satisfaction may be improved, and how improvements in patient satisfaction may positively influence patient outcomes both subjectively and objectively. The purpose of this review is to illuminate how evaluation works, how patient factors may affect or correlate with increased satisfaction, and how physicians can improve actions to enhance patient satisfaction. Notably, studies have found that improved care coordination, nursing follow-up, provider listening skills, providing realistic yet positive expectations, and sitting …

Design For Transtibial Modifiable Socket For Immediate Postoperative Prosthesis, Matthew N. Rush, Evan Hagin, Jane Nguyen, Victoria Lujan, Rebecca A. Dutton, Christina Salas
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Amputations are long-standing surgical procedures that have been performed for centuries; however, very little attention and urgency have been given to immediate restoration of movement and return to a normal lifestyle. In many cases, the time between amputation and prosthetic fitting can pause recovery and development of new routines. To increase recovery, immediate postoperative prostheses (IPOPs) have been developed yet these are under-utilized because of concerns for wound healing and complications with vascular diseases. Subsequently, we designed a transtibial IPOP that utilizes an ergonomic modifiable socket that allows for examination, wound care, and in situ edema control. Additionally, the IPOP …

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are a major cause of pediatric kidney failure. We performed a genome-wide analysis of copy number variants (CNVs) in 2,824 cases and 21,498 controls. Affected individuals carried a significant burden of rare exonic (that is, affecting coding regions) CNVs and were enriched for known genomic disorders (GD). Kidney anomaly (KA) cases were most enriched for exonic CNVs, encompassing GD-CNVs and novel deletions; obstructive uropathy (OU) had a lower CNV burden and an intermediate prevalence of GD-CNVs; and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) had the fewest GD-CNVs but was enriched for novel exonic CNVs, …

Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is the precursor to Aβ plaques. The cytoplasmic domain of APP mediates attachment of vesicles to molecular motors for axonal transport. In APP-KO mice, transport of Mn2+ is decreased. In old transgenic mice expressing mutated human (APPSwInd) linked to Familial Alzheimer's Disease, with both expression of APPSwInd and plaques, the rate and destination of Mn2+ axonal transport is altered, as detected by time-lapse manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) of the brain in living mice. To determine the relative contribution of expression of APPSwInd versus plaque on transport dynamics, we developed a Tet-off system to decouple expression …

Preservation Protocols For Maintaining Species Stability Of Arsenic, Chromium, And Selenium In Water Samples, Contessa Lowery
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Water quality has become an increasing concern in recent years. The environmental challenges surrounding water quality include the presence of dissolved metals and their potential impact on human health and the environment. The challenge is exacerbated because many important metals have multiple oxidation states, which affect the health and environmental behavior of the metal. Many metals are known carcinogens and increased anthropogenic effects have inexorably made metals’ accumulation an imposing threat. Analytical instrumentation has advanced in many areas, making it now possible to measure very low concentrations of multiple elements in water. Current interest is determining the chemical speciation of …

Welcome into my scientific lab! My lab[oratory] is a virtual facility with non-controlled conditions in which I mostly perform scientific meditation and chats: a nest of ideas (nidus idearum, in Latin). I called the jottings herein scilogs (truncations of the words scientific, and gr. Λόγος – appealing rather to its original meanings "ground", "opinion", "expectation"), combining the welly of both science and informal (via internet) talks (in English, French, and Romanian). * In this fourth book of scilogs collected from my nest of ideas, one may find new and old questions and solutions, referring mostly to topics on NEUTROSOPHY – …
