Early Mississippian Ocean Anoxia Triggering Organic Carbon Burial And Enhancing Late Paleozoic Ice Age Onset: Evidence From Uranium Isotopes Of Marine Limestones, Keyi Cheng
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The Early Mississippian (Tournaisian) positive δ13C excursion (or TICE) is one of the largest recorded in the Phanerozoic and the organic carbon (OC) burial associated with its development is hypothesized to have driven global cooling and increased glaciation. We are testing the hypothesis that expanded ocean euxinia/anoxia drove widespread OC burial and the TICE and we are testing this hypothesis using uranium isotopes (δ238U) of Lower Mississippian marine limestones from southern Nevada as a global seawater redox proxy.
δ238U trends record a prominent mid-Tournaisian negative excursion (~0.30‰ magnitude) lasting ~1 My. The lack of …
Intratypic Genetic Variability Of Human Adenovirus Type 4: Implication For Viral Pathogenesis, Camden Roy Bair
Intratypic Genetic Variability Of Human Adenovirus Type 4: Implication For Viral Pathogenesis, Camden Roy Bair
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Human adenovirus type 4 (HAdV-E4) is a causative agent of acute respiratory disease and conjunctivitis worldwide. Two major lineages of HAdV-E4 genomic variants have been identified by their distinct BamHI restriction profiles: prototype-like (p-like) strains and the a-like genomic variants. Recent molecular epidemiology studies have shown a predominance of a-like genomic variants detected in association with disease which suggests a-like strains have a fitness advantage or they may be more pathogenic. The impact of HAdV-E4 intratypic genetic variability on in vitro and in vivo phenotypes relevant to pathogenesis is a major gap in knowledge. I hypothesize that HAdV-E4 comprises two …
Improving Proton Pump Inhibitor Prescription Practices As A Means To Decreasing Nosocomial Infections, Jens Langsjoen
Improving Proton Pump Inhibitor Prescription Practices As A Means To Decreasing Nosocomial Infections, Jens Langsjoen
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed to treat stomach acid related illnesses, but increase the risk of hospital acquired infections. Measuring hospital PPI overuse trends and provider willingness to adopt PPI reduction interventions can inform the feasibility of reducing PPI overuse. We: (1) interviewed physicians, pharmacists and IT leaders to determine options for hospital PPI reduction, (2) analyzed electronic health record data to determine patterns of PPI overuse, and (3) surveyed providers regarding their willingness to adopt PPI reduction interventions. PPI use was inappropriate in 32% of inpatient encounters locally and 38% nationally. ICU exposure increased the odds of …
Low Loading Gold Vapor Deposited Electrode For High Sensitivity As (Iii) Detection, Tybur Casuse
Low Loading Gold Vapor Deposited Electrode For High Sensitivity As (Iii) Detection, Tybur Casuse
Civil Engineering ETDs
The objective of this thesis is to develop a method for detection of arsenite, As (III), using a thin film of gold (Au) vapor deposited onto carbon paper as an electrode. Currently, availability of drinking water arsenic (As) concentration information for rural communities is diminished due to high cost per sample analysis and limited access to analytical laboratories which can accurately determine concentrations near the 10 maximum contaminant level (MCL) set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The use of a minimal amount of gold aids in decreasing the cost of an electrode. …
Tauopathies, Novel Optogenetic Tools, And The Future Of Artificial Intelligence In Medicine, Jessica Lee Binder
Tauopathies, Novel Optogenetic Tools, And The Future Of Artificial Intelligence In Medicine, Jessica Lee Binder
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
To this day, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD). With the daunting rise at an exponential rate of ADRD burden and related deaths, the necessity to find a new line of attack is vital. Pathological accumulation of microtubule associated protein tau in neurons is a major neuropathological hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related tauopathies. Attempts have been made to promote clearance of pathological tau (p-Tau) from neurons via autophagy. Transcription factor EB (TFEB) has shown to clear p-Tau from neurons via autophagy. However, sustained TFEB activation and autophagy can create burden on cellular …

Strategies To Combat Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis: Inhalable Microparticles Formulated With Anti-Tubercular Antibiotics And Efflux Pump Inhibitors, Elliott K. Miller
Strategies To Combat Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis: Inhalable Microparticles Formulated With Anti-Tubercular Antibiotics And Efflux Pump Inhibitors, Elliott K. Miller
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is an intracellular pathogen which can remain dormant within the human body for years (latent tuberculosis), and once active requires extensive multidrug therapies for treatment. Long-term antibiotic(s) exposure have led to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains which require novel treatment approaches to combat Mtb resistance. Mtb may also utilize efflux pumps to expel antibiotics and promote bacterial survival, potentially mediating drug tolerance, which has been hypothesized to contribute to antibiotic resistance. Efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs) such as verapamil (VER) may potentiate effects of first-line anti-tubercular drugs (ATDs) such as rifampicin …
The Patent Lawyer’S Guide To Fascism, Andrew C. Michaels
The Patent Lawyer’S Guide To Fascism, Andrew C. Michaels
New Mexico Law Review
This essay presents an unusual and potentially valuable way of thinking about the patent system. It is worth considering the ways in which the structure of private law may affect our susceptibility to undesirable forms of societal organization. This essay considers how a well-structured patent system could potentially reduce our susceptibility to fascism by: (1) promoting an ethos of independent creative thought, and (2) facilitating market entry by startups, thereby reducing market concentration and possibly reducing authoritarian hierarchy. One legitimate utilitarian aim of the patent system might be to thus promote horizontal individualism, which could tend to work against fascism’s …

Ethnic Identity And Genetic Ancestry In New Mexicans Of Spanish-Speaking Descent, Meghan Elizabeth Healy
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation focuses on a regional population, New Mexicans of Spanish-speaking descent (NMS), to explore the nature of identity-related substructure in admixed populations and its implications for research and policymaking. We looked at the relationship between ethnic/ethnoracial identity and genomic ancestry in NMS in two studies. In the first, we collected genomic ancestry data using 270 autosomal microsatellites in 98 New Mexicans who self-identified as Hispanic or Latino and provided more detailed information on their ethnoracial identities. We tested for genetic substructure in this sample along with 13 other admixed samples from the Americas. The New Mexican sample showed evidence …
Identification Of A Novel Class Of Er-Selective Ligands Lacking Cross-Reactivity To Gper, Richard Anthony Pepermans
Identification Of A Novel Class Of Er-Selective Ligands Lacking Cross-Reactivity To Gper, Richard Anthony Pepermans
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Estrogen plays multiple roles in health and disease, exerting its effects through the classical estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ) and the G protein‑coupled estrogen receptor (GPER). Current ER‑targeting ligands, including the therapeutic ERα antagonist tamoxifen, have been shown to cross‑activate GPER. This cross‑activation is hypothesized to contribute to clinically observed endocrine resistance in breast cancer, highlighting the potential benefit of truly ER‑selective antagonists. We report the identification of a novel class of ER‑selective ligands that lack cross‑reactivity towards GPER, identifying a truly ER‑selective agonist (AB‑1) and antagonist (AB‑82P). Importantly, AB‑82P degrades a clinically relevant ERα mutant and exhibits inhibitory effects …

A Microfluidics-Based Cross-Flow Filtration Platform For Rapid Processing Of Amphiphilic Biomarkers From Blood, Kiersten D. Lenz
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
Early and accurate detection of bacterial infections can help save lives, prevent the spread of disease, and decrease the overuse of antibiotics. Our team at the Los Alamos National Laboratory has developed novel assays to detect bacterial biomarkers from patient blood at the point-of-care in order to facilitate a universal diagnostic platform. However, these biomarkers are amphiphilic in nature, and this biochemical property causes them to be sequestered by high-density and low-density lipoproteins (HDL and LDL) in the host’s blood. Extraction of the bacterial biomarkers from the lipoprotein complexes is thereby required for the development and deployment of a diagnostic …

Triplet Population Dynamics And Excited State Relaxation In Chalcogenophene Polymers, Benjamin D. Datko
Triplet Population Dynamics And Excited State Relaxation In Chalcogenophene Polymers, Benjamin D. Datko
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The conventional understanding of intersystem crossing in multichromophoric conju- gated polymers is usually depicted via a pure electronic model, neglecting contributions of vibrations or conformational order. Obtaining accurate structure-function correlations on spin-conversion processes involving photogenerated singlet excitons to triplet excitons and the excited state dynamics requires sensitivity to the subtle conformational ordering within conjugated polymers. This dissertation seeks to understand the kinetics of multi-exciton singlet-triplet interactions and the excited state relaxation of chalcogen containing (S, Se) conjugated polymers. Utilizing single molecule modulation spectroscopy allows determi- nation of triplet formation of individual conjugated polymer chains and aggregates. This technique resolves triplet-induced …

Science For All: Exploring Science Communication For Public Engagement In Culturally Diverse Scenarios In The Americas, Denisse Helena Vasquez-Guevara
Latin American Studies ETDs
Universities in the United States and Ecuador must meet various policy guidelines concerning research and teaching that address the needs of their local communities. In Ecuador, the higher education law requires that universities undertake research and public outreach projects that respond to societal needs. In the United States, Carnegie Research Classifications motivate universities to serve their publics by carrying out community-engaged research. However, evaluations of public outreach projects and community-engaged research have consistently demonstrated that the segments of society that are ostensibly served by these initiatives are not meaningfully engaged in them; members of the public are treated as, and …
