A Content Analysis Spanning 30 Years Of Mental Health Communication Scholarship, Camille Velarde

Communication ETDs

Currently, the communication research concerning mental health is sporadic, unorganized, and disintegrated. Previous research has not looked at organizing the literature through content analysis. To address this gap in the literature, the purpose of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the current state of mental health communication research. This thesis has six key objectives: (1) systematically review the communication literature regarding mental health communication and identify current trends and future areas for research; (2) identify the aspects or topics regarding mental health communication in published research; (3) identify the theoretical underpinnings of mental health communication research; (4) …

Communication As A Resource For Latin American Immigrant Settlement In The United States: An Ethnography Of Communication, Danielle Kvam May 2014

Communication As A Resource For Latin American Immigrant Settlement In The United States: An Ethnography Of Communication, Danielle Kvam

Communication ETDs

In this dissertation, I investigate the uses and meanings (Hymes, 1972/1986) of various metacommunicative terms, or "talk about talk" (Philipsen, 1992, p. 72) of a speech community. This speech community is comprised of Latin American immigrants residing in the United States and the staff members who serve them at an immigrant support center (ISC hereafter). I apply Hymes's (1962, 1972/1986, 1974) ethnography of communication to investigate the uses and meanings of the metacommunicative practices of the ISC speech community, which I treat as demonstrating communication practices available for speakers at ISC. In addition to investigating their metacommunicative practices, I also …

Social Network Analysis Of Peer Influence On Adolescent Smoking, Gregory Lambert Feb 2014

Social Network Analysis Of Peer Influence On Adolescent Smoking, Gregory Lambert

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Adolescent cigarette smoking behavior is affected by peer relationships, but how these peer relationships influence the behavior of other adolescent smokers is not well understood. Mixing among cigarette smokers in adolescent friendship networks could indicate peer influence or a homophilous association among likeminded individuals. The goal of this thesis will be to examine a set of adolescent friendship networks to determine if different cigarette smoking behaviors can be predictive of friendship nominations in the network. Examining the structure of social networks requires among other things, inspection of the presence (or absence) of relational ties. Tie formations in social networks are …

Livestock, Land, And Dollars: The Sheep Industry Of Territorial New Mexico, Jon M. Wallace Feb 2014

Livestock, Land, And Dollars: The Sheep Industry Of Territorial New Mexico, Jon M. Wallace

History ETDs

Sheep Growing constituted New Mexico's leading industry for much of the territorial period and had been of major importance over the preceding two centuries, since the days of Spanish sovereignty. This work is a dedicated economic history of the industry during the territorial period, a time during which sheep sheep growing underwent a series of dramatic changes from the traditional Spanish practices of open-range grazing and large trail drives serving Mexican markets to capitalized sheep and wool production on managed lands, serving vastly larger American markets. The herds multiplied tremendously, while leadership and control of the industry shifted from a …

Pre-Service Chinese English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Teachers Perceptions About Implementation Of Communicative Language Teaching, Huanan Zhang Feb 2014

Pre-Service Chinese English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Teachers Perceptions About Implementation Of Communicative Language Teaching, Huanan Zhang

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The government of China requires that the Communicative Language Teaching Approach (CLT) should be applied in primary and secondary school English education by issuing the New Curriculum early in 2001 to develop learners competence of using the language; however, implementation of CLT is still a big challenge confronting pre-service Chinese EFL teachers who experienced the traditional teaching approach over an extensive period of time. I conducted a case study research on the perceptions about CLT of twelve pre-service EFL teachers from Liaoning Province, China, to explore: a) what are pre-service Chinese EFL teachers' perceptions about CLT and its implementation in …

(Re)Making Mestizaje: The Role Of Race And Gender Norms In Latina College Students Discourse, Sarah Leah Santillanes

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This ideological critique project focused on the race and gender discourse of 20 self-identified Latina community college students between the ages of 18-30. Participants were purposively sampled and recruited from a large community college within the state of New Mexico. Over a period of eight months, two or more semi-structured interviews were conducted with each research participant. These interviews highlighted the participants race and gender experiences and their perceived expectations about these norms inside and outside of school. A critical hermeneutic methodological framework was employed in the interpretation of the participants' interviews. Discourse transcriptions were coded first for general themes …

Harold Camping And May 21, 2011: Rationalizations, Leader Responses, And Gender Differences Following A Failed Prophecy, Christin L. Moreland Feb 2014

Harold Camping And May 21, 2011: Rationalizations, Leader Responses, And Gender Differences Following A Failed Prophecy, Christin L. Moreland

Sociology ETDs

Previous studies regarding failed prophecies have focused on believers responses following a failed prophecy, along with how believers rationalize and convince others of the prediction's fulfillment. The literature does not address the reaction of leaders following a failed prophecy or indicate a gendered experience within prophetic groups. This case study looks at the May 21st, 2011 rapture prediction, and subsequent failure, of Harold Camping. My research investigates new rationalizations utilized by followers and leaders of a prophetic ministry, observes the reaction of a leader towards critics, and recognizes a gendered dynamic at play within apocalyptic communities. Upon transcribing podcasts from …

The Phenomenology Of Husbands Caring For Wives With Dementia, Melanie Mayo Feb 2014

The Phenomenology Of Husbands Caring For Wives With Dementia, Melanie Mayo

Nursing ETDs

The lived experience of husbands caring for wives with dementia was investigated in order to develop a better understanding of their caregiver burden. The conceptual background for the study originated in the work of philosophical phenomenologists Edmund Husserl and Edith Stein with particular attention to their theories of inter-subjectivity and empathy. Amadeo Giorgis Descriptive Phenomenological Method in Psychology was used for study design and analysis. Results suggest an enduring connectedness of the couples and their bonds throughout the shifting of roles and emotions as the dementia progresses. Implications for nursing include the need to employ interventions respectful of the persistence …

Perceived Social Support And Female Baccalaureate Nursing Students In The Southwest, Jane L. Smith Feb 2014

Perceived Social Support And Female Baccalaureate Nursing Students In The Southwest, Jane L. Smith

Nursing ETDs

Perceived social support has been shown to improve mental health, increase persistence, decrease stress, and decrease attrition in nursing students. A lack of it has been linked to increased dropout rates in nursing school. It is vital we identify methods of increasing perceived social support to reduce dropout rates in nursing programs. However, there is an absence of published research about social support in female baccalaureate nursing students. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between perceived social support, reciprocity, economic adequacy, marital status, marital satisfaction, and age in female baccalaureate nursing students. The participants were female …

Mystics, Radicals, Sinners, And Saints: Freedom, Rebirth, And The American West, Brian King

History ETDs

This dissertation explores the lives of John Muir, the Taos Society of Artists, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Everett Ruess, Edith Warner, and the Taos hippies who journeyed to the American West in search of freedom. In the Western setting, with its diverse yet distinctive and stunning terrain, these individuals felt that their mind or soul—not just their physical body—had been liberated. They felt reborn. In the grand Sierras, John Muir discovered that physical and spiritual freedoms were intertwined. The Taos Society of Artists and Mabel Dodge Luhan found their connection with the natural world in northern New Mexico where three cultures …

"Lesbianas Presente:" Lesbian Activism, Transnational Alliances, And The State In Mexico City, 1968-1991, Lucinda Grinnell Feb 2014

"Lesbianas Presente:" Lesbian Activism, Transnational Alliances, And The State In Mexico City, 1968-1991, Lucinda Grinnell

History ETDs

My dissertation examines the emergence of lesbian movements in Mexico City in the context of the Cold War and the onset of economic neo-liberalism. A transnational approach is crucial to understand the constitution of these movements because they responded and contributed to global sexuality rights movements as well as to the global Left. During this time, Mexican lesbians allied with the political Left offering support to socialist and anti-imperialist groups. In turn, the government treated lesbian activists as they did the Left, monitoring and harassing lesbians and their organizations in an effort to weaken the groups influence on civil society. …

Communication Neutrosophic Routes, Florentin Smarandache, Ştefan Vlăduţescu Jan 2014

Communication Neutrosophic Routes, Florentin Smarandache, Ştefan Vlăduţescu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Any manifestation of life is a component of communication, it is crossed by a communication passage. People irrepressibly generate meanings. As structuring domain of meanings, communication is a place where meanings burst out volcanically. Manifestations of life are surrounded by a halo of communicational meanings. Human material and ideatic existence includes a great potential of communication in continuous extension. The human being crosses the path of or is at the intersection of different communicational thoroughfares. The life of human beings is a place of communication. Consequently, any cognitive or cogitative manifestation presents a route of communication. People consume their lives …

Towards A Practical Communication Intervention, Florentin Smarandache, Stefan Vladutescu Jan 2014

Towards A Practical Communication Intervention, Florentin Smarandache, Stefan Vladutescu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The study starts from evidence that several communication acts fail, but nobody is called to intervene and nobody thinks of intervening. Examining different branches (specialties) of the communication discipline and focusing on four possible practices, by comparison, differentiation, collating and corroboration, the current study brings arguments for a branch of the communication discipline that has as unique practical aim the communicational intervention, the practical, direct and strict application of communication research. Communication, as discipline, must create an instrument of intervention. The discipline which studies communication globally (General Communication Science) has developed a strong component of theoretical and practical research of …

Advancing The Grounded Study Of Religion And Society In Latin America, Richard L. Wood Jan 2014

Advancing The Grounded Study Of Religion And Society In Latin America, Richard L. Wood

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

In rediscovering the interpenetration of popular culture and politics in Latin America, and thus the ways these realms mutually constitute one another, scholars have also witnessed the analytic irruption of one particular cultural fi eld: religion. Close attention to grassroots political culture allows us to probe how peoples spiritual subjectivity and political subjectivity overlap and cross-fertilize one another. In the process, religion shapes political outcomes in ways often unintended. Two further analytic insights are discussed: First, analysis of lived religion must partially decenter religious institutions from the focus of analysis but also pay attention to how institutions shape spiritual and …

Differential Influence Of The Great Recession On Political Participation Among Race And Ethnic Groups, Kimberly R. Huyser, Jillian Medeiros Pérez, Vickie Ybarra, Julia Marin Hellwege, Lisa Sanchez

Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications

Our study seeks to understand the role of perceived economic stress of the Great Recession on political participation among blacks, whites and Latinos. Methods. We use the 2012 Collaborative Multi-Racial Political Study and negative binomial regression to examine the impact of financial hardship on black, Hispanic, and white political participation. Results. We find that political participation among whites is unaffected by the Great Recession and is largely motivated by political interest. Blacks are mobilized by financial hardship even after controlling for political enthusiasm and linked fate. Hispanics have the lowest level of political participation. Conclusion. Overall, we conclude that the …

Law Of Included Multiple-Middle & Principle Of Dynamic Neutrosophic Opposition, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2014

Law Of Included Multiple-Middle & Principle Of Dynamic Neutrosophic Opposition, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the author pledges for the generalization of the Lupasco-Nicolescu’s Law of Included Middle [A, nonA, and a third value T which resolves their contradiction at another level of reality] to the Law of Included Multiple-Middle [A, antiA, and neutA, which is split into a multitude of neutralities between A and antiA, such as neutA1, neutA2, etc.]. The value (i.e. neutrality or indeterminacy related to A) actually comprises the included middle value.

Further, similarly to the extension from dialectics to neutrosophy, the author extends the Principle of Dynamic Opposition [opposition between A and antiA] …

Reversing The Flood Of Forced Displacement: Shedding Light On Important Determinants Of Return Migration, Prakash Adhikari Ph.D., Wendy L. Hansen Ph.D. Jan 2014

Reversing The Flood Of Forced Displacement: Shedding Light On Important Determinants Of Return Migration, Prakash Adhikari Ph.D., Wendy L. Hansen Ph.D.

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Most current research on forced migration focuses on explaining patterns of displacement during armed conflicts and the role that social networks play in pulling people away from conflict torn areas. But what happens to displaced persons after a conflict ends? While many of these individuals are able to resettle in the place to which they fled during conflict, some individuals return to their places of origin while others remain in limbo. This research seeks to better understand behavior after flight. Using a rational choice framework, we theorize that people are strategic in their calculations of the costs and benefits of …

Striae Re-Negotiated: The Self-Definition Of The Yiddish-Speaking Jewish Community In The Era Of Mexicos Raza Cósmica, Beth Merfish

Research Papers

This essay examines Mexican Jewish documents through which that community navigated the political terrain of post-Revolution Mexico. Central to this discussion is tension between Jewish desires to become part of this new nation and the imperative to remain a discreet cultural and religious community. I first examine the pressures of assimilation in 1920s Mexico exemplified by José Vasconcelos 1925 La raza cosmica and then probe the Yiddish-speaking Jewish community's response and self-definition in relation to a rapidly developing nation, using two case studies: the Jewish community's political position publicized in the 1929 Asociación de Jóvenes Israelitas de México bulletin and …

Nanta Hosh Chahta Immi? (What Are Choctaw Lifeways?): Cultural Preservation In The Casino Era, Sean Everette Gantt

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation investigates the long-term impacts of tribal economic development programs on the cultural preservation efforts of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians (MBCI). Since the 1970s the Mississippi Choctaw have initiated many different economic enterprises ranging from manufacturing plants to resort development, owning and operating a diversified portfolio of manufacturing, service, retail, and tourism enterprises. This history of engaging with western business models offers a unique perspective for analyzing the long-term effects of these practices on a tribal community. My work with the MBCI engages a long debate over the use of capitalist business models in tribal economic development …
