From At-Risk To Scholar: Transformational Learning Among Undergraduate Researchers', Dayra Fallad-Mendoza Aug 2016

From At-Risk To Scholar: Transformational Learning Among Undergraduate Researchers', Dayra Fallad-Mendoza

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

How do undergraduate research programs act as effective agents of perspective transformation among underrepresented students? El Puente Fellows is an undergraduate research program that provides a space where underrepresented students are transformed. Its structure is designed to counter the negative Master Narrative at play for first generation, low income, and minority students in higher education. This study looked at the extent to which perspective transformative experiences were at play and guided students to greater academic, personal and professional goals in El Puente. Participants reported to be empowered as a result of the program and have higher levels of self-confidence regarding …

Social Network Characteristics As They Relate To The Mental Health Of Refugees, Richard Greene Aug 2016

Social Network Characteristics As They Relate To The Mental Health Of Refugees, Richard Greene

Sociology ETDs

This study (N=168) builds on a long lineage of scholarly work connecting social networks to mental health by exploring relationships between refugee social network compositions—network size, proportion of same sex ties, proportion of same community ties, and role heterogeneity—and self-reported symptoms of PTSD, depression, and anxiety. This study finds that newly resettled refugee social networks are small and social isolation is common; approximately 30% of participants reported having no local social network ties. For refugees with local social network ties, the composition of social networks does appear to matter. Having more same sex ties was negatively associated with higher mental …

Do Online Gaming Experiences Affect Civic Engagement? The Relationship Between Gaming Experiences, Parental Involvement, And Real World Civic Engagement, James Letterhos Aug 2016

Do Online Gaming Experiences Affect Civic Engagement? The Relationship Between Gaming Experiences, Parental Involvement, And Real World Civic Engagement, James Letterhos

Sociology ETDs

The majority of literature that concerns itself with the effects of video games and youth focus on negative potential outcomes, like the potential for increased antisocial behavior. Whats more, that literature also focuses on the content of the games themselves and not necessarily on the actions of other players within games. This study considers what happens when players witness antisocial behavior acted out by other players as well as intervention against that behavior and the role that parental involvement plays in mediating the direct effects of gaming and youth civic engagement. Weighing three differing perspectives on the relationship between video …

Chant And Transformation: The Benedictine Monks Of Christ In The Desert Monastery, Amy Suzanne Gillespie Aug 2016

Chant And Transformation: The Benedictine Monks Of Christ In The Desert Monastery, Amy Suzanne Gillespie

Music ETDs

Music scholars have devoted significant attention to the vast repertoire of chant, the cults from which it is said to have sprung, semiology, or its place in Western Christian worship, but a limited number of studies address the chanter and how chant renders affective and cognitive processes. The monks of Christ in the Desert Monastery are engaged four hours a day, every day, in the antiphonal rhythm of psalmody, constructing its expressivity and sculpting, from forty members, one voice. Here, the Divine Office, as prescribed by St. Benedict, is strictly followed. The monks repetitive and synchronized practice, suffused with chanting, …

"The Bellows / Of Experience": The Modernist Love Poem And Its Legacy, Stephanie Spong Aug 2016

"The Bellows / Of Experience": The Modernist Love Poem And Its Legacy, Stephanie Spong

English Language and Literature ETDs

The vein of experimental love poetry examined in this project takes advantage of the friction generated by charging both form and content with innovation. The troubled relationship between sex and power is knit directly into the long and dynamic history of love poetry, but there has yet to be a published monograph on the modernist love poem and its implications for literary history. This dissertation fills a major gap in scholarship and speaks to the broader social concerns addressed by public discourse on sex, sexuality, and eros. The body of modernist love poetry includes allusions to traditional love poetry—a tradition …

"The Distemper Of A Gentleman": Grotesque Visual And Literary Depictions Of Gout In Great Britain 1744-1826, Calinda Shely Aug 2016

"The Distemper Of A Gentleman": Grotesque Visual And Literary Depictions Of Gout In Great Britain 1744-1826, Calinda Shely

English Language and Literature ETDs

In this dissertation I explore the way in which visual and literary representations of gout in British literature and popular culture during the period 1744-1826 evince anxieties regarding over-consumption, particularly in relation to imperial expansion. I argue that the prevalence of gout in graphic satire indicates a common cultural understanding and perception of upper-class over-consumption of food, alcohol, material goods, and sex that threatens the health of the entire British body politic. These depictions provide a way through which the interests of those outside of the ruling classes can begin to develop a sense of community and subtly articulate a …

Perceptions Of Reversible And Permanent Contraception In India, Neha Rani Bhardwaj Jul 2016

Perceptions Of Reversible And Permanent Contraception In India, Neha Rani Bhardwaj

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Background: In 1951 India became the first country to launch a national family planning program focused on promoting reversible and permanent contraception including financial incentives for both method acceptors and providers. Despite governmental provision of the copper intrauterine device (IUD), oral contraceptive pills (OCP) and condoms at no cost, most Indian women choose permanent sterilization after completing childbearing. Whether the predominance of sterilization stemmed from Indian men and women’s desire for permanent contraception, from deficient knowledge and access to reversible methods, from public health messages and established norms, or from coercion in the form of incentives is unknown. Objectives: The …

Place, Imaginary, Identity: Place Ethnography In Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, Tita Berger Jul 2016

Place, Imaginary, Identity: Place Ethnography In Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, Tita Berger

American Studies ETDs

"Place for me is the locus of desire," writes Lucy Lippard in the opening to Lure of the Local (1997). This research project is about place. Two distinct sets of scholarship on place emerged in the 1970s and the 1990s. A third wave of place scholarship is evident today. Coming initially from geography and anthropology, the study of place is now ubiquitous across fields in history, cultural studies, architecture, planning, health sciences, art and other disciplines. Despite the sustained interest in the study of place, one of the hallmarks of place is the ranging and contested contours of what place …

Indigenous Language Educator's Experiences: Addressing Issues On The New Mexico Indian Education Act Of 2003 And Strengthening The New Mexico Indigenous Language Programs In Public Schools, Geneva Becenti

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This dissertation is a qualitative case study focused on Native American language and culture teachers' views on the New Mexico Indian Education Act of 2003 (NMIEA). The study was a two-part research project with data being collected through: 1.) surveys and 2.) interviews. In the first phase of the study, approximately 49 surveys provided an overall evaluation from parents, community members, teachers and administrators on the NMIEA. The survey explored whether or not the act is serving its purpose. Some of the respondents provided comments as well as recommendations. In the second-part of the study, 18 participants were interviewed. The …

User Experiences Of Regret While Engaging With Social Media, Kimberly Oostman Jul 2016

User Experiences Of Regret While Engaging With Social Media, Kimberly Oostman

Communication ETDs

Social media offers users the ability to participate with a social network of others in a process of sharing and fellowship, presenting an impression of self and the ability to monitor constructed expressions. Recent studies examining the ritual view of communication, impression management, self-regulation, and self-reflective capabilities show each of these plays a role when using certain social media sites. However, a research gap exists regarding the use of any social media and the perspectives of young adult users during the scenario of experiencing regret as the result of engaging with social media. The study is a mixed-methods exploratory study …

Critical Intercultural Dialogue: Discourse Analysis Of Context, Intersectionality, And Reflexivity In Undergraduate Conversations, Erin Watley Jul 2016

Critical Intercultural Dialogue: Discourse Analysis Of Context, Intersectionality, And Reflexivity In Undergraduate Conversations, Erin Watley

Communication ETDs

Intercultural conflicts continue to persist for numerous reasons. The groups involved remain polarized, individuals tend to primarily concentrate on defending their own point of view, or solutions concentrate on individual actions instead of the consequences perpetuated by complex social systems. The communicative behaviors that often accompany intercultural conflicts also frequently work to sustain them, helping those who are involved to perpetuate dominant narratives and marginalizing social systems in ways in which they are both active and complicit. In this study Critical Discourse Analysis was used to examine the ways that undergraduate students discussed and conceptualized intercultural conflicts during their involvement …

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

Purpose — This study explored the learning processes related to projects used by adults with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), along with the environmental factors that aided or detracted from learning. Design/methodology/approach — Using a modified appreciative inquiry type question approach, adults with ADD/ADHD were asked to participate in either an online questionnaire or a focus group conducted in late 2015. The population consisted of adults, age 18 or older, who could attest to having ADD/ADHD diagnosed in childhood or as an adult. The intent was to discover successful strategies employed by this population to …

Transcendence And Transformation: Charles Taylor And The Promise Of Inclusive Humanism In A Secular Age., Phillip Williamson Schoenberg Jun 2016

Transcendence And Transformation: Charles Taylor And The Promise Of Inclusive Humanism In A Secular Age., Phillip Williamson Schoenberg

Philosophy ETDs

This is a study in the religious philosophy of the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor. I focus in particular on the role of transcendence in his later writing on religion and secularity with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of his overall vision of the way out of the malaise of modernity, namely, his adumbration of a pluralistic solution, which I call "inclusive humanism" in contrast to both a narrow religious humanism on the one hand, and a narrow "exclusive" secular humanism on the other. Transcendence as transformation is the centerpiece of Taylor's hope for the moral and spiritual …

Framework For Assessing Integrated Water Resources Management In Latin America: Case Studies Of Buenos Aires And São Paulo, Christina Kathryn Faris Jun 2016

Framework For Assessing Integrated Water Resources Management In Latin America: Case Studies Of Buenos Aires And São Paulo, Christina Kathryn Faris

Geography ETDs

This thesis examines the World Banks Latin America and the Caribbean Blue Water Green Cities (BWGC) urban water development initiative that began in 2009. This program attempts to create a comprehensive Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) approach for policymakers at both local and national levels, improving water management approaches and disseminating data on lessons learned. This thesis evaluates the success of the BWGC initiative by analyzing Buenos Aires and S\xe3o Paulo as case studies. Each city is analyzed through examination of the specific World Bank program and through application of a general assessment tool, the City Blueprint Framework (CBF), which …

Sociolinguistics For Kids: A Curriculum For Bilingual Students, Mary Hudgens Henderson Jun 2016

Sociolinguistics For Kids: A Curriculum For Bilingual Students, Mary Hudgens Henderson

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

While sociolinguistics outreach projects have been created with native-English-speaking students in mind (Reaser, 2006; Sweetland, 2006; Wheeler & Swords, 2006), a language awareness program has yet to be created and implemented for English Language Learners. To meet this need, eighteen Sociolinguistic Awareness lessons were designed, implemented, and evaluated for Spanish-English bilingual 5th graders enrolled in a Dual Language program (N = 24) in the Southwest U.S. The Language Variation and Style-Shifting curriculum was assessed through 1) pretest and posttest language surveys; 2) conversational interviews with select participants before and after the lessons were taught; and 3) field notes collected by …

Neyman Smooth-Type Goodness Of Fit Tests In Complex Surveys, Lang Zhou Jun 2016

Neyman Smooth-Type Goodness Of Fit Tests In Complex Surveys, Lang Zhou

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In our study, we have extended the Neyman smooth-type goodness of fit tests by Eubank (1997) from simple random sample to complex surveys (Methodologies have been provided for complex surveys, and theorems have been provided only for stratified random samples.) by incorporating consistent estimators under the survey design, which is accomplished by a data-driven nonparametric order selection method. Simulation results show that these proposed methods potentially improve the statistical power while controlling the type I error very well compared to those commonly used existing test procedures, especially for the cases with slow-varying probabilities. We also derived the large sample properties …

"Yes, No, Maybe": Loyalty And Betrayal Reconsidered: The Tule Lake Pilgrimage, Ella-Kari Loftfield Jun 2016

"Yes, No, Maybe": Loyalty And Betrayal Reconsidered: The Tule Lake Pilgrimage, Ella-Kari Loftfield

History ETDs

This project aims to explain how the contemporary Tule Lake Committee commemorates and honors the Japanese Americans who found themselves incarcerated at the Tule Lake Segregation Center in northern California after 'failing' the loyalty questionnaire administered to them by the War Relocation Authority during World War II. The Tule Lake Committee holds biennial pilgrimages which have become increasingly popular in the last decade. A 'thick description' of the 2010 pilgrimage and an analysis of the pilgrimage themes shows how the Tule Lake Committee honors the experience of Japanese Americans whose history was written out of the collective memory in the …

Grit And Student-Athlete Performance: A Case Study., Troy Morgan Jun 2016

Grit And Student-Athlete Performance: A Case Study., Troy Morgan

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between grit and student-athlete academic and sport performance. An exploratory study was conducted using a case study methodology, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research. The Grit Short Scale (Duckworth, 2007) was employed on student-athletes at an NCAA Division II university in the American Southwest Rocky Mountain Region. Results included a positive correlation between student-athlete grit level and informant grit report, indicating that student-athlete consistently rated their grit higher than their coach rated their grit. Also, in this case study, grit does not account for more predictive value of college academic …

"It Was A Whole New Environment": Transformative Organizational Culture And The Development Of Science Identity For Underrepresented Students In Science, Technology, Engineering And Math (Stem), Rebecca Ann Beals Jun 2016

"It Was A Whole New Environment": Transformative Organizational Culture And The Development Of Science Identity For Underrepresented Students In Science, Technology, Engineering And Math (Stem), Rebecca Ann Beals

Sociology ETDs

Traditional models of student success in higher education focus on access and retention of students, and fall short in their ability to explain the nuanced dynamics of identity formation that occurs for underrepresented STEM students. Drawing on Multicontextual Theory, I examine how academic environments offer non-traditional ways of developing an integrated science identity' in underrepresented STEM students and offer benefits to these students in terms of attraction to STEM, socialization and persistence. The intersectional, mixed-method data for this dissertation include in-depth interviews, focus groups, and student survey responses from various STEM contexts across multiple institutions in the Southwest. I discuss …

Unexpected Accompaniment: Cognitive Mechanisms For Language-Music Mismatch In Time, Hui-Chieh Hsu May 2016

Unexpected Accompaniment: Cognitive Mechanisms For Language-Music Mismatch In Time, Hui-Chieh Hsu

Linguistics ETDs

Extensive research has been carried out for the role played by anticipation in human cognition (Br\xf4ne 2012; Coulson 2005; Huron 2006). Employing the terms 'anticipation' and 'expectation' interchangeably, these studies emphasize only the temporal sequentiality between elements taking place at different points in time, a relation parallel to the progression of time. In modes of communication where simultaneous events are possible, however, there exists a similar but distinct relation between elements simultaneously represented in time. This is expectation, a relation perpendicular to the progression of time. Ubiquitous and indispensable for our understanding of the most ordinary, the relation of expectation …

Basketmaker Ii Warfare And Fending Sticks In The North American Southwest, Phil R. Geib May 2016

Basketmaker Ii Warfare And Fending Sticks In The North American Southwest, Phil R. Geib

Anthropology ETDs

Direct physical evidence and rock art, including head skin trophies, indicate that violence linked to warfare was prevalent among the preceramic farmers of the North American Southwest known as Basketmakers. The degree of intergroup conflict indicates that Basketmakers may have needed defense against atlatl darts. In the early 1900s archaeologists suggested that distinctive wooden artifacts served this purpose. Despite resembling Puebloan rabbit sticks, the first to report these S-shaped and flattened sticks with longitudinal facial grooves thought that hunting was not their purpose. Yet the sticks appear singularly inadequate for the task of atlatl dart defense. I evaluate the suggested …

Hope As Reclaiming Narrative Agency: The Communication Processes Facilitating Hope At A Community-Based Support Program, Laura L. Burton

Communication ETDs

This study, using interviews and in situ group observations, explored the communication processes that facilitate the emergence of hope at a community based support program (CBSP). No literature within the communication field focuses on hope and there are no studies that explore the co-construction of hope through communication. Within the extensive studies of hope in other disciplines, the communication lens is absent. Within the literature of wellness, positive and supportive communication, narrative, and mutual aid groups, there are no studies that focus on emergent hope or the communication processes facilitating hope. Hope is widely accepted as critical to life and …

Female Gender Role Representation Between 1990 And 2010 In Imported Childrens Cartoons And Their Implications For Conservative Yemeni Culture, Fatima Al-Hattami May 2016

Female Gender Role Representation Between 1990 And 2010 In Imported Childrens Cartoons And Their Implications For Conservative Yemeni Culture, Fatima Al-Hattami

Communication ETDs

This thesis explores the female gender role representations in imported cartoons across the years 1990 and 2010 and their resonance with the conservative Yemeni Muslim culture. The two selected cartoons are A Little Princess Sara (a Nippon Animation production) and Totally Spies (a Marathon Media production), both of which are imported to the Arab countries, dubbed into the Arabic language, aired on Arab childrens channels and popular among girls. The study is inspired by theories of media and cultural globalization and imperialism, which were developed to explain media policies and flow around the globe. The study also draws on the …
