El Estado De Abandono De Los Menores Venezolanos: Un Estado Predilectual En El Presente, Dora R. Zerpa Bravo
Sociology ETDs
The problem of juvenile delinquency has grown to dramatic proportions in the major cities of Venezuela as the cities have become more congested. There is a mass migration to urban areas of persons seeking employment in the one industry that is heavily supported by the government: the oil industry. In Caracas, Valencia and Maracaibo, children experience acute deprivation in a way of life that is characterized by desease, poor nutrition, inadequate housing and education, lack of medical care, broken families, and unemployment. Instances of mendicancy and criminal behavior are especially prevalent among youth. The general protective legislation, or Estatuto de …

Faculty Receptivity To Radical Academic Ideology: An Empirical Test Of A Causal Model, Suzanne Vaughan
Faculty Receptivity To Radical Academic Ideology: An Empirical Test Of A Causal Model, Suzanne Vaughan
Sociology ETDs
A causal model was developed to explain faculty receptivity to radical academic ideology. Hypotheses derived from a synthesis of a simple isomorphic theory of ideology and Smelser's value-added theory were tested concerning the causal dependence of radical academic values on structural alienation and powerlessness in the academic system. The resulting model was tested with data obtained from a survey sample of faculty members at the University of New Mexico. Utilizing six empirical variables designed to reflect structural alienation factors (academic longevity, academic achievement, rank, tenure, prestige of field, and career continuities), a path analysis was conducted to assess the causal …

American Studies ETDs
This three-essay study examined European-American political and social treatment of Native Americans, and European-American interpretations of Native American literature. It proceeds from the hypothesis that the Euro-American conception of Native America differs greatly from the Native American's conception of himself. Recent examinations of the relations between European and Native Americans have revealed that the American treatment of aboriginal people was a consequence of basic European attitudes, rather than a reaction to Native American conduct. These same attitudes have colored literary studies just as they have colored all aspects of American-Native American relations.
The aims of the research were to study …

Lawyers, The Legal Profession And The Poor, John Hamilton Culver
Political Science ETDs
The purpose of this research is to analyze the response of the legal profession to the civil legal problems of the poor. The first half of the study concerns the historical background of the profession and its role in the development of the legal aid societies. The second half focuses on the reaction of lawyers to the federal government's Legal Services Program (LSP). The situation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is included as a case study of the resistance mounted by lawyers in opposition to one local program. The LSP was created in 1965 as the legal component to the War …

Sex As An Extralegal Factor In Judicial Decision-Making, Sarah K. Gaughan
Sex As An Extralegal Factor In Judicial Decision-Making, Sarah K. Gaughan
Psychology ETDs
Previous studies, most of which have been sociological, have shown the influence of extralegal factors on judicial decisionmaking. The present experimental study was conducted to determine the specific effects of sex of the offender and sex of the judge on sentencing. Sixteen fictional cases of both juvenile and adult offenders were given to graduating law students. The cases were counterbalanced by sex, and contained both serious and minor crimes. The subjects then assigned sentences from a list of six alternatives. At the conclusion of the experiment the students were asked to guess what the independent variable might have been and …
