Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this effort I am joined by many AIDS activists including people living with AIDS— Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome. “A syndrome is a pattern of symptoms pointing to a “morbid state” which may or may not be caused by infectious agents; a disease, on the other hand is, …

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Computational models pervade all branches of the exact sciences and have in recent times also started to prove to be of immense utility in some of the traditionally 'soft' sciences like ecology, sociology and politics. This volume is a collection of a few cuttingedge research papers on the application of variety of computational models and tools in the analysis, interpretation and solution of vexing real-world problems and issues in economics, management, ecology and global politics by some prolific researchers in the field.

Opportunity, Democracy And Political Violence: A Sub-National Analysis Of Conflict In Nepal, Alok K. Bohara, Neil J. Mitchell, Mani Nepal Jul 2005

Opportunity, Democracy And Political Violence: A Sub-National Analysis Of Conflict In Nepal, Alok K. Bohara, Neil J. Mitchell, Mani Nepal

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

With more than 8000 deaths in eight years, a Maoist insurgency, reinforced by ethnic cleavages, has resulted in substantial levels of political violence in Nepal. With fresh district-level data, and drawing on theoretical insights from both the conflict and human rights literatures, research that has relied primarily on cross-national comparisons, we develop and test hypotheses using a sub-national research design. We find support for ""opportunistic"" strategic interaction between government and opposition. Opportunity is conceived geographically, politically, and internationally, and our findings contribute new evidence for the importance of geography but also of democracy in their effects on the levels of …

Investigating The Impact Of Social Networks On Household Forest Conservation Effort In Rural Nepal, Mani Nepal, Alok K. Bohara, Robert P. Berrens Jul 2005

Investigating The Impact Of Social Networks On Household Forest Conservation Effort In Rural Nepal, Mani Nepal, Alok K. Bohara, Robert P. Berrens

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

The objective of this paper is to investigate links between the strength and type of social networks, as a collective or community characteristic, and private forest conservation activity in rural Nepal. To handle excess zeros and overdispersion in the data, we use the zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) model, while testing and correcting for endogeneity in the SN indices. Findings are consistent with the theory that social networks, such as community …
