An Exploratory Study Of Teacher Perception Of Social Presence: Design And Instructional Practices For New Online Teachers, Mark Pugsley

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of high school teachers regarding social presence in online instruction. Participants were nine teachers, all new to teaching online. The influence of an Online Social Presence Rubric was studied along with other variables that affected understanding of social presence during one teaching semester. Five primary questions guided the research with the intention of furthering knowledge about social phenomena in the field of online education: (I) What do teachers identify as the central constructs to social presence; (II) How does the Online Social Presence Rubric affect teachers understanding of social …

Ghostly I(S)/Eyes: The Formation Of Subjectivity In Mexican American Life Narratives, Patricia Marie Perea Feb 2011

Ghostly I(S)/Eyes: The Formation Of Subjectivity In Mexican American Life Narratives, Patricia Marie Perea

American Studies ETDs

Autoethnography is the genre through which many marginalized groups write back to hegemony (Pratt 1992, 7). It is no wonder then that one of the modes in which Mexican Americans choose to express themselves and represent their communities is autoethnography. However, the study of Mexican American autoethnography reveals a more complicated dynamic occurring in its formation. This dynamic goes beyond binary constructions such as periphery (Mexican Americans) versus center (Euroamerican) to illuminate the shifting structure of Mexican American history as well as the shifting structure of Mexican American subjectivity. I argue Mexican American life narratives use autoethnographic methods to inform …

Latina Immigrant Women And Domestic Violence: Likelihood Of Reporting To Mid-South Police, Kimberly Mathis Pitts Feb 2011

Latina Immigrant Women And Domestic Violence: Likelihood Of Reporting To Mid-South Police, Kimberly Mathis Pitts

Sociology ETDs

Domestic violence occurs across all ethnic and racial groups and affects women of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds. However, research shows that battered women of Latin American descent are less likely to seek help from either formal or informal sources (West, Kantor, & Jasinski, 1998) and research done on Latina women in shelters suggest that these women are more likely to stay longer in an abusive relationship before seeking help (Torres, 1991). To contribute to the growing body of literature on race and domestic violence, this research will examine particular situational and individual-specific characteristics of domestic violence incidents experienced by …

In A "We Can't" Theater Culture, My Playwriting Reality: A Self-Reflective Analysis, Margaret Iha

Theatre & Dance ETDs

This essay examines the effects of a "we can't" theatre culture as experienced by the author. I detail my experiments in discerning and enacting a we can way of doing theatre amidst a creative environment punctuated by unkept promises. My account examines two main unkept promises or we can moments: we can write didactic drama and we can produce your play that way.

Occam's Beard: Belief, Disbelief, And Contested Meanings In American Ufology, William J. Dewan

American Studies ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to critically examine the emergence, maintenance, evolution, and dissemination of belief traditions in New Mexico and the United States that are most commonly associated with the UFO phenomenon. This critical analysis incorporates theoretical frameworks from a multitude of interrelated disciplines, including folklore, history, anthropology, popular culture studies, sociology, and psychology. The primary goal of this dissertation involves the attempt to formulate a typology of UFO accounts in American culture, and how said accounts are interpreted, communicated, and publicly evaluated. To achieve this end, a database of UFO-related experiences was compiled in New Mexico and …

Well Built In Albuquerque: The Architecture Of The Healthseeker Era, 1900-1940, Kristen Reynolds Feb 2011

Well Built In Albuquerque: The Architecture Of The Healthseeker Era, 1900-1940, Kristen Reynolds

History ETDs

This thesis examines the architectural and cultural landscape of tuberculosis in Albuquerque during the first decades of the twentieth century. Inspired by a general belief in the healing powers of high-altitude desert air and sunshine, Albuquerque fashioned itself into a popular health resort for consumptives. In 'Well Built in Albuquerque: The Architecture of the Healthseeker Era, 1900-1940,' I argue that the disease inspired a new and distinctive health landscape in the city that included sanatoriums, boarding houses, and rustic campsites. The architecture, design, and spatial patterning of this landscape reflected prevailing medical and social ideologies concerning both the disease and …

Motherhood And Desistance: The Influence Of Children In Women's Offending, Erin Kleymann Feb 2011

Motherhood And Desistance: The Influence Of Children In Women's Offending, Erin Kleymann

Sociology ETDs

An increasing number of women are being incarcerated, of which almost 80% are mothers. Many of these women have children who they wish to reconnect with upon release. Desistance research, which has focused on male populations, finds that conventional social bonds increase odds of desistance. However, there are few studies of womens desistance and it is unclear if social bonds exhibit the same affect for females. Using desistance literature, social control, and strain theories, I examine the Glueck Women's Reformatory Study data from the 1920's. I focus on two key questions: Is motherhood important to desistance? And under what conditions …

Can They Do That To Me?! Does The 8th Amendment Protection Children’S Best Interests?, Maryam Ahranjani Jan 2011

Can They Do That To Me?! Does The 8th Amendment Protection Children’S Best Interests?, Maryam Ahranjani

Faculty Scholarship

Children are our nation’s most valuable resource and also arguably our most vulnerable population. Recent decisions by the Supreme Court, including Roper v. Simmons (2005), Graham v. Florida (2010), and J.D.B. v. North Carolina (2011) indicate its willingness to consider the special characteristics of children in determining their rights; but, by and large, the Court’s analysis does not hinge on the best interests of the child. Can They Do That to Me?! Does the Eighth Amendment Protect Children’s Best Interests? explores case law in the public school and juvenile justice system arenas and concludes that a child-centered approach to punishment …

"We're Parents Too!" Changes In Father Involvement In Domestic Labor Among Urban Middle Class Dual-Worker Couples, Ruth Burgett Jolie Dec 2010

"We're Parents Too!" Changes In Father Involvement In Domestic Labor Among Urban Middle Class Dual-Worker Couples, Ruth Burgett Jolie

Anthropology ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate fathers involvement in domestic labor among middle class, dual-worker families in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I argue that men's participation in domestic labor is affected by their parental identities. Three things influence parental identity: (1) demographics, including socioeconomic position, age, race/ethnicity, (2) religiosity, meaning ones adherence to religious values and participation in a formal religious institution (Wilcox 2002:781), and (3) parental ideology, denoting the belief structure surrounding what a parent ought to do. Demography and religiosity are themselves mediated by parental ideology, and in turn also further shape, parental ideology. Parental ideology directly …

Three Algorithms For Causal Learning, Roshan Ram Rammohan Dec 2010

Three Algorithms For Causal Learning, Roshan Ram Rammohan

Computer Science ETDs

The field of causal learning has grown in the past decade, establishing itself as a major focus in artificial intelligence research. Traditionally, approaches to causal learning are split into two areas. One area involves the learning of structures from observational data alone and the second, involves the methodologies of conducting and learning from experiments. In this dissertation, I investigate three different aspects of causal learning, all of which are based on the causal Bayesian network framework. Constraint based structure search algorithms that learn partially directed acyclic graphs as causal models from observational data rely on the faithfulness assumption, which is …

Structure Of Narratives: Applying Propp's Folktale Morphology To Entertainment-Education Films, Divya Sreenivas Dec 2010

Structure Of Narratives: Applying Propp's Folktale Morphology To Entertainment-Education Films, Divya Sreenivas

Communication ETDs

This study examines narrative strategies through which feature films accomplish the dual role of entertainment-education to shape social reality surrounding health issues. More specifically, exploring films' narrative structures and characterization, this study illuminates how a coherent HIV/AIDS narrative is woven into cinematic artifacts laden with specific cultural values, beliefs and practices. The entertainment-education literature has rarely undertaken a study of films to demonstrate their entertainment-education potential. Moreover, by taking a structuralist perspective and utilizing narrative theories this study uncovers underlying elements that cut across narratives. According to Fisher (1987), the proponent of narrative theory, narratives are moral constructs with values …

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation is the story of the destruction of Indian families as told to Congress in hearings held by the Sub-Committee on Indian Affairs in 1974 and the Select Committee on Indian Affairs in 1977 through the testimony of children, parents, Indian leadership, the Association on American Indian Affairs, psychological witnesses, and other advocates who opposed destructive child welfare practices. Human Development In Poor Countries: Bangladesh In Comparative Perspective, Nafisa Halim Sep 2010

Human Development In Poor Countries: Bangladesh In Comparative Perspective, Nafisa Halim

Sociology ETDs

My dissertation addresses the developmental paradox' of rapid gains in human development in Bangladesh against the backdrop of a social scientific literature that portrays two of the country's endemic features—Islam and illiberal politics—as inveterate obstacles to their achievement. I use data from household surveys conducted by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies in collaboration with the World Bank in 1991-2 and 1998-9, and identify the distal determinants of the Bangladeshi mortality decline. I find female education has a linear effect and household income has a curvilinear effect on infant and child mortality. Why is the relationship between income and child …
