Application Of Gis And Spatial Data Modeling To Archaeology: A Case Study In The American Southwest, Veronica Maria Arias
Application Of Gis And Spatial Data Modeling To Archaeology: A Case Study In The American Southwest, Veronica Maria Arias
Anthropology ETDs
One of the most important methodological advances in the archaeology of the past quarter century is the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) in archaeological research. Within this time frame, GIS has evolved from an emergent geospatial technology with limited mapmaking capabilities to a technology of choice for cultural resource managers, planners, and academic archaeologists alike. This dissertation examines the evolutionary trajectory and impact of GIS in the discipline since its introduction, and its potential to support new applications of GIS-driven innovation in archaeological research. As part of this project, two separate studies were conducted. The first study assessed adoption …
The Bioarchaeology Of Changes In Social Stratification, Warfare, And Habitual Activities Among Iron Age Samnites Of Central Italy, Vitale Sparacello
The Bioarchaeology Of Changes In Social Stratification, Warfare, And Habitual Activities Among Iron Age Samnites Of Central Italy, Vitale Sparacello
Anthropology ETDs
This study uses a bioarchaeological approach to investigate the behavioral and social correlates of changes in skeletal properties during the Iron Age of central Italy. This was a period of demographic growth, increase in sociopolitical complexity, and social stratification. Early states were developing from simpler forms of social aggregation, and expansionistic, large-scale warfare was beginning. I analyzed the mechanical properties of Iron Age human skeletons (844 individuals) from 11 necropoleis belonging to the Oscan ethno-linguistic group (Samnites). The analysis of grave goods allowed for a division of individuals by status categories. Iron Age samples show an increase in stature compared …
"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday
"I'M Afraid [Of] My Future.": Secrecy, Biopower, And Korean High School Girls, Noelle Easterday
Anthropology ETDs
This paper analyzes the secrets revealed by Korean high school girls. Despite their struggles being known to the Korean public-at-large, the majority of these secrets express the students dismay at not meeting the high standards expected of teenage girls in successfully preparing for the future. In this case study, the public airing of the otherwise silenced acknowledgement of the authors' perceived deficiencies and failures illuminates processes of biopower (the subject-based regulation and disciplining of bodies) embedded within the Korean nation-state building project. I explore how the Neo-Confucian principles of reverence, obedience, and self-cultivation work together with the neoliberal, post-industrial consumerist …
Looking Forward Rather Than Backward: Cultural Revitalization At The Poeh Cultural Center And Museum, Kaila Cogdill
Looking Forward Rather Than Backward: Cultural Revitalization At The Poeh Cultural Center And Museum, Kaila Cogdill
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation investigates how the Pueblo of Pojoaque went from near desertion to a community that in contemporary times (and with the assistance of nearby Tewa communities) has worked to retain its culture and art, in an important example of cultural revitalization. Pojoaque Pueblos Poeh Cultural Center and Museum provides a unique perspective on cultural revitalization in the 21st century. The Poeh Center has been used by Pojoaque Pueblo to strengthen its identity and its economic and social status in the area, and as a result is considered one of the most progressive Pueblos in the Southwest. I address the …
Communication Technology And Public Participation In Urban Planning: Who Is Speaking Up In Austin And Who Is Listening?, Amos Stoltzfus
Communication Technology And Public Participation In Urban Planning: Who Is Speaking Up In Austin And Who Is Listening?, Amos Stoltzfus
Architecture and Planning ETDs
Public participation has enjoyed a long, if embattled, history in the field of urban planning in the U.S. Although mandated by federal, state and local regulations, designing processes for meaningful public participation has proven difficult for both practical and political reasons. Recognizing the inadequacies of traditional participation methods – particularly in strengthening democracy, valuing local knowledge and pursuing social justice - many planning practitioners and participation theorists held high aspirations for the potential of communication technology in the networked world of Web 2.0 to transform the role of the public in improving the quality of urban environments. Although research in …
Farming And Fighting As Practice And Pedagogy: A Procedural Field Analysis Of Digital Games, Alexis Pulos
Farming And Fighting As Practice And Pedagogy: A Procedural Field Analysis Of Digital Games, Alexis Pulos
Communication ETDs
Video games are currently one of the leading entertainment mediums across the globe, with games like Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision) selling 4.3 million dollars in the first week of sales and adding to the parent company Activision Blizzard's 2011 revenue of 4.9 billion dollars. In 2011 the North American video game industry had a revenue of $25 billion (ESA, 2012), more than twice the film industry establishing video games as a predominant entertainment medium. However, in the fifty-four years that video games have been a medium for meaning making, the majority of research has focused on quantitative analysis …
Inhabited Landscapes: Nudes, Spirituality, And Coevality In The Landscape Paintings Of Armando Morales, Regina N. Emmer
Inhabited Landscapes: Nudes, Spirituality, And Coevality In The Landscape Paintings Of Armando Morales, Regina N. Emmer
Art & Art History ETDs
The Nicaraguan artist Armando Morales (1927-2011) has received considerable attention in recent scholarship for his work as a Magical Realist' painter--a label that has drawn attention to the 'dreamlike' and 'mythic' qualities of Morales' work while obscuring other qualities that are critical to understanding the artist and his oeuvre. Focusing on the landscape paintings that Armando Morales executed between 1985 and 2001, I remove Morales' work from the framework of magical realism within which it has been situated in order to more deeply probe themes that were central to the artist but which have been largely overlooked. More specifically, my …
The Rebirth Of Catholic Collective Action In Central America: A New Model Of Church-Based Political Participation, Stacy Keogh, Richard L. Wood
The Rebirth Of Catholic Collective Action In Central America: A New Model Of Church-Based Political Participation, Stacy Keogh, Richard L. Wood
Sociology Faculty and Staff Publications
We analyze a new effort at collective political mobilization, sponsored by the Catholic Church in Central America following the demobilization of church-linked liberationist movements since the early 1990s. The current effort strives to re-project social Catholicism into the public arena by drawing on traditional Catholic structures, the cultural legacy of liberationist Catholicism, and a model of democratic organizing promoted by the PICO National Network in the United States. Drawing primarily on ethnographic and interview data, we explain the initial success of the effort in the light of the literature on resource mobilization, mobilizing structures, and the cultural dynamics of social …

El Centro Strategic Plan 2012-17, El Centro De La Raza
El Centro Collective Impact and Outlook Reports
The rationale for the El Centros strategic plan is to be able to meet the challenges set forth by the President under the UNM2020 vision, as well as to set an strategic direction that will incorporate the challenges that the population of students we serve is undergoing. El Centro's Strategic Plan provides for greater involvement in retention, graduation and outreach. It also incorporates the connection that El Centro has with the communities from where UNM Raza and Latino students come from. El Centro is, and has been, essential for the overall goal of retaining UNM Raza/Latino students through the strengthening …
Trust As An Ethical Construct In Community Based Participatory Research Partnerships., Julie Ermalinda Lucero
Trust As An Ethical Construct In Community Based Participatory Research Partnerships., Julie Ermalinda Lucero
Communication ETDs
This study addressed the lack of attention to trust in Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) partnerships. CBPR is a promising research orientation to reduce health inequities in communities of color. This research orientation has been deemed an ethical and trust building approach to health research. However, this claim has not been empirically investigated. Specifically this investigation explored trust development as a process of ethical communication. Trust is important to all relationships and more attention to how trust develops is needed. In research relationships mistrust, which impacts CBPR, stems from historic events and institutional histories of collaboration. Trust and mistrust can …
Lost Worlds: Locating Submerged Archaeological Sites In Southeast Alaska, Kelly Rose Bale Monteleone
Lost Worlds: Locating Submerged Archaeological Sites In Southeast Alaska, Kelly Rose Bale Monteleone
Anthropology ETDs
Synthesis and interpretation of archaeologically documented land-use patterns and ethnographic data are used to identify and model where people chose to live, hunt, and gather prehistorically. This project tests the hypothesis that the archaeological record of SE Alaska extends to areas of the continental shelf that were submerged by post-Pleistocene sea level rise beginning around 10,600 cal years BP (9,400 14C years). Digital elevation models (DEM) and sea-level curve for southeastern Alaska are used to create time slices between 16,000 to 10,500 cal BP. The variables (slope, aspect, distance from paleo-stream, paleo-lakes, paleo-coastlines, and known archaeological sites, and coastal sinuosity) …
When Visions Converge And Collide: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of Staff Participation In The Patient- And Family-Centered Care Initiative At The University Of New Mexico Hospital, Lisa Rossignol
Communication ETDs
Using Symbolic Convergence Theory (SCT), this study sought to determine the rhetorical vision of staff at UNM hospital about working with patients and families and comparing it to the ideal rhetorical vision that the Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care (PFCC) has for healthcare providers. Participant observation methods were employed over a two-month period for seated physician rounds and interdisciplinary care planning and discharge planning meetings at UNMH in a general pediatric unit and a pediatric rehabilitation unit. Physicians had their own unique symbolic reality that differed from the vision of interdisciplinary groups. Physicians were most concerned with other physicians …

In my case, the village is named Rachana. I spent Easter there in the little village where I was born, where I grew up, and then left to go to college thirty-three years ago. I was fortunate to live in a small village, where everyone had a hand in raising all children. From the sculptor, to the priest, to the stonemasons, the farmers, the doctor, and the author, they all shaped my life and those of my boyhood friends. Participating in Easter mass in the old church, many memories rushed through my head as I watched the old faces that …

A Survey Of Medical Schools' Disability Curricula, Ingrid C. Hendrix, Richard M. Kimball
A Survey Of Medical Schools' Disability Curricula, Ingrid C. Hendrix, Richard M. Kimball
Posters and Presentations
It is a well established problem that people with disabilities (PWD), as with many other groups disadvantaged by social inequities, often receive suboptimal care from health care providers. The root cause of this inequity in care can be traced to a lack of training in dealing with PWD for health care providers. Barriers result from issues of communication, knowledge of resources available, access to clinics/hospitals, difficulty using diagnostic equipment (exam tables, scales, mammography, etc) and attitudes towards PWD. Despite numerous reports outlining this issue and calls to action to address deficiencies in the care of PWD, few medical schools currently …

Exploring The Phenomenon Of Self-Mutilation Among Adult Males In A Correctional Setting: A Quantitative And Qualitative Inquiry, Yolanda Morales
Exploring The Phenomenon Of Self-Mutilation Among Adult Males In A Correctional Setting: A Quantitative And Qualitative Inquiry, Yolanda Morales
Nursing ETDs
The overall aim of this mixed method inquiry was to increase understanding of self-mutilation by adult males in a correctional setting. This study explored the self-mutilating attributes such as type and motivational factors, to identify factors associated with self-mutilation among adult males in a correctional setting. Self-mutilation has classically been associated with adolescents and females; however, behind the walls of many correctional institutions, adult males are engaging in self-mutilating behavior. Self-mutilation by this population can have serious health consequences, impact the safety of the institution, and also have fiscal consequences. While this remains a serious forensic issue, there is a …
Contested Spaces: Protestantism In Oaxaca, 1920-1995, Kathleen Mcintyre
Contested Spaces: Protestantism In Oaxaca, 1920-1995, Kathleen Mcintyre
History ETDs
This study focuses on intra-village religious conflict stemming from Protestant conversion in Oaxaca. Protestant expansion is nowhere more visible than in southern Mexico. Of the southern states Oaxaca has the highest growth rate of Protestantism, increasing 531% between 1970 and 2000. From 2000 to 2010, it grew another 65%. Such rapid change brought serious conflicts in closely knit indigenous villages. Asserting that en el pueblo, la costumbre es ley,' ('in the town, custom is law') some communities argued that Protestant expansion created divisions and jeopardized communalism. Religious competition challenged collective identity in indigenous villages, leading to competing conceptualizations of tradition …
Japanese Public Middle School Teachers Perceptions Of Japanese As Second Language (Jsl) Learners: Dynamics Of Racialization, Kelly King
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
The purpose of this study has been to apply the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a means for understanding how Japanese as second language (JSL) learners are racialized in Japanese public schools and the degree to which Japanese public middle school teachers support or interrupt these processes. The approach taken in this study was qualitative; data was collected between December 2008 and September 2009. The data includes an initial survey to middle school teachers, two semi-structured interviews with 16 middle schools teachers, participant-observations in JSL and other subject area classes at four schools— a total of twenty eight …

Principals' Perceptions Of Their Responsibilities And Practices Related To English Language Learners, Connie Yaqub
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine principals perceptions of their responsibilities for English language learners (ELLs) and their beliefs about what contributes to these students' academic success. The growing population of ELLs in the US face increased risk for underachievement, as recorded by traditional measures, yet little research investigates the critical role of the principal in the education of ELLs. This study focuses on 7 principals (nominated by other educators as exemplary) in public schools with high enrollments of ELLs found in rural, suburban, and urban districts in a northeastern state. Data came from individual open-ended initial …
The Politics Of Play: A Sociocultural Analysis Of Play In The Context Of State Preschool Standards, Michelle Croasdell
The Politics Of Play: A Sociocultural Analysis Of Play In The Context Of State Preschool Standards, Michelle Croasdell
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
The past decade has seen an explosion of brain research and early childhood policies resulting in academics as a priority at state-funded preschools. Although strongly supported through a century of research, play often is pushed out by a more formalized, academic curriculum. Under the direction of the No Child Left Behind Act (2002), and the Race to the Top' program, states have developed early learning standards to inform preschool teachers and direct the education and assessment of preschool children in the United States. Through content analysis early learning standards for the 50 states and the District of Columbia were examined …

Numerical Simulation Of Traffic Flow Using A Hydrodynamic Model, Craig Vanderploeg
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
We examine the solution to the system of partial differential equations for the transport and continuity equations. The model for our system of equations closely resembles the Payne-Whitham model for traffic flow. The solution can be approximated closely through the method of finite differencing. We approach this approximation of the solution through computer simulation in Matlab.

The Interplay Among Religiosity, Heath, And Ethnicity : Changing Patterns In The U.S., 1972-2010, Belinda Vicuna
Psychology ETDs
Because ethnic minorities continue to experience health inequities in America, the powerful social forces that help determine our health become all the more relevant to explore. Within this social context, an often overlooked factor is the role that religiosity plays in influencing health. This investigation explored the relationships among religiosity, health, and ethnicity. Primary aims were to specify the change that has occurred over time in religiosity, health, and socio-demographic variables and to determine whether religiosity has a unique influence on health for each ethnic group. The General Social Survey, a large, nationally representative dataset was utilized. Comparisons of correlations …
Repurposing American Labor Law: Immigrant Workers, Workers' Centers And The National Labor Relations Act, Jessica R. Garrick
Repurposing American Labor Law: Immigrant Workers, Workers' Centers And The National Labor Relations Act, Jessica R. Garrick
Sociology ETDs
Contemporary debates on immigrants and the labor movement focus on whether immigrant workers are joining and thereby revitalizing unions. But Somos un Pueblo Unido or Somos', an immigrant resource center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, has been using an obscure provision of the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) less to boost union density than to develop an alternative to contract unionism. By helping non-unionized workers use Section 7 of the NLRA to act concertedly in their own defense, I argue, Somos is simultaneously combating employer abuse, in the short run, and demonstrating that immigrants may be transforming, rather than simply …
Whither The World Polity? A Contribution To The Study Of International Organizations Through Survival Analysis Of Oecd Accession Rates, Kathryn Overton
Whither The World Polity? A Contribution To The Study Of International Organizations Through Survival Analysis Of Oecd Accession Rates, Kathryn Overton
Sociology ETDs
Accession to international governmental organizations (IGOs) has become an important corollary of modern international relations. Not only have IGOs proliferated significantly over the past fifty years, but, institutionalist paradigms, such as World Polity theory, suggest membership to such entities is inherent to the definition of modern statehood. Although IGO accession is rather commonplace, a full understanding of the motivation and gains associated with such commitments is not fully established. The current project contributes to this scholarly debate by applying World Polity theory to the question of why IGOs actively invite certain states into membership negotiations. The author employs a survival …

Civic Education As An Instrument Of Social Mobility, Dawinder S. Sidhu
Civic Education As An Instrument Of Social Mobility, Dawinder S. Sidhu
Faculty Scholarship
Economic inequality—the relative distance between the wealthy and the poor—is growing in the United States. Relatedly, social mobili-ty—the opportunity to rise economically—has stalled for many in the nation. This is most true for the urban poor, who experience extreme poverty and are trapped in American inner cities. Meaningful economic opportunity and robust public educational support are among the tradi-tionally discussed means by which the urban poor may attain enhanced economic and physical mobility. The question becomes whether civic education—an understanding of the structure and contents of the U.S. Constitution and of the American government more broadly—has any-thing to offer in …
