Chondroblastoma Of The Calcaneus Treated With Femoral Head Allograft Reconstruction For Subtalar Arthrodesis In A Skeletally Immature Patient: A Case Report, Benjamin B. Blanco, Ryan Dahlberg, David H. Chafey
Chondroblastoma Of The Calcaneus Treated With Femoral Head Allograft Reconstruction For Subtalar Arthrodesis In A Skeletally Immature Patient: A Case Report, Benjamin B. Blanco, Ryan Dahlberg, David H. Chafey
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Chondroblastomas are rare, benign, primary bone tumors most seen in men within their second decade of life in the epiphyseal/apophyseal region of long bones. Only a few cases of disease in the calcaneus have been reported previously, with treatment generally involving surgical curettage and local adjuvants. Recurrence rates can be as high as 38.0%, especially in a lesion near the physis or in skeletally immature patients. The authors present the case of a 14-year-old boy with active calcaneal chondroblastoma that was successfully treated with curettage, allograft reconstruction, and subtalar arthrodesis. The patient is now two years postoperative with no evidence …
Why You Should Use The New Ota Open Fracture Classification (Ofc3), Thomas A. Decoster, Meir Marmor
Why You Should Use The New Ota Open Fracture Classification (Ofc3), Thomas A. Decoster, Meir Marmor
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Open fracture classification has traditionally used a modified Gustilo Classification (GOFC). There are many recognized problems with the Gustilo classification. The Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) produced an open fracture Classification (OTA OFC) in 2010 to overcome problems with GOFC. However, it has not been widely adapted, partially because there are too many categories. The OTA OFC has proven to be more effective in identifying particular parameters that affect outcome and treatment for open fractures than GOFC. Numerous authors have called for a reconciliation of the two classifications. The OTA Classification Committee has proposed a modification called the OTA OFC3, which …
Comparison Of Helicopter And Ground Interfacility Transport On Time-To-Treatment Of Isolated Open Fractures, Jerry Speight Grimes, Duke Appiah
Comparison Of Helicopter And Ground Interfacility Transport On Time-To-Treatment Of Isolated Open Fractures, Jerry Speight Grimes, Duke Appiah
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: Helicopter emergency medical services have become an integral part of trauma systems. When appropriately utilized, helicopter transport can improve the outcomes of trauma patients. The objective of this study was to determine if helicopter transport for interfacility transfers was effective in reducing time-to-treatment for isolated open fractures in the setting of a rural Level I trauma center. The authors hypothesized that helicopter transportation of isolated open fractures would not reduce time to definitive fixation.
Methods: All patients treated with isolated open fractures over a four-year period at a Level I trauma center were identified. In this study, the authors …

Radiographic Identification And Treatment Prioritization Of Pediatric Elbow Fractures, Hoang M. Nguyen, Bryce Clinger, Casey Slattery, Selina R. Silva, Patrick Bosch
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: Constituting approximately 15.0% of fractures, pediatric elbow fractures often require surgical intervention. Accurate diagnosis in pediatric patients is challenging, demanding proficient radiographic expertise. Initial diagnosis falls to emergency medicine (EM) physicians and pediatricians, who may lack sufficient radiographic training. Previous research by Shrader found a 58.0% accuracy in non-academic EM physicians for pediatric elbow fractures. The purpose of the study is to build on Shrader’s work and assess orthopaedic surgery (OS), pediatric, EM, and residents’ ability to accurately interpret pediatric elbow radiographs.
Methods: OS, EM, and pediatric residents at a Level 1 trauma center in an academic institution examined …
Neuroarthropathy And Workers’ Compensation Denials In Healthcare, Jerry Speight Grimes
Neuroarthropathy And Workers’ Compensation Denials In Healthcare, Jerry Speight Grimes
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: Neuroarthropathy is a complication of peripheral neuropathy commonly associated with diabetes mellitus. The actual trigger for a neuroarthropathy episode is unknown. If the inciting event occurred at work, causality of neuroarthropathy is difficult to determine.
Methods: In this study, the authors retrospectively reviewed workers’ compensation claims to identify patients with diabetes mellitus, peripheral neuropathy, and neuroarthropathy. The correlation between their health status and claims status was reported. The number of workers’ compensation denials for services already performed were compared between the groups.
Results: Over a five-year period, 412 patients were evaluated in a tertiary foot and ankle clinic with …

Cross-Tasking In Surgery: An Efficient Method To Perform Multiple Tasks In Parallel, Jacob Sanchez, Robert C. Schenck Jr., Lillian J. Schenck, Urvij Modhia, Gehron Treme, Samer Kakish, Deana Mercer, Daniel C. Wascher, Dustin L. Richter
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Multitasking is defined as the ability to perform more than one task or activity simultaneously, which can be inefficient, unsafe, and should be avoided when applied to surgery. Cross-tasking is a concept where processes can be safely performed in parallel. The authors present cross-tasking as a useful approach to surgical procedural task subsets, timing of parallel tasks, and combining parallel tasks when performing a specific orthopaedic operation. The authors use the examples of an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and complex spinal deformity correction to review the pearls and pitfalls of models that manage multiple simultaneous surgical and educational tasks. This …

Affordable Housing In Healthy Communities: Integrating Environmental Justice Into The Application Criteria For Affordable Housing Tax Credits In New Mexico, Vanessa Springer
Affordable Housing In Healthy Communities: Integrating Environmental Justice Into The Application Criteria For Affordable Housing Tax Credits In New Mexico, Vanessa Springer
New Mexico Law Review
In Bernalillo County, New Mexico, communities of color and people living below the poverty line are more likely to live in areas with high exposure to pollution and associated health risks. Similar trends are echoed throughout the country. These data trends and experiences form the basis for the environmental justice movement, or the movement for a clean and safe environment for all people regardless of race or class. As the science on disparate environmental impacts develops, so does the law, and regulations to control further disparate impacts in low-income communities and communities of color are being introduced and implemented in …

Pro Se What?! Orders Of Protection, Credible Threats To Physical Safety, And Restricting Access To Firearms, Amy J. Feagans
New Mexico Law Review
Orders of protection provide survivors of domestic abuse a level of security by limiting contact between the parties. In 2019, the New Mexico legislature amended the Family Violence Protection Act (FVPA) to provide additional protections through orders of protection by requiring the respondent to relinquish their firearms to law enforcement where the court finds there is a “credible threat to the physical safety” of the petitioner. In 2023, the New Mexico Supreme Court clarified the required showing for obtaining an order of protection and held that the court must find prior domestic abuse. But the “credible threat” standard required for …

Navigating Murky Waters: Strengthening Water Protections In A Post-Sackett Landscape, Brittany Herrera
New Mexico Law Review
Nearly ninety percent of New Mexico’s rivers and streams potentially have been removed from federal protection under the Clean Water Act following the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Sackett v. EPA to substantially reduce what qualify as “waters of the United States.” Before this decision, many ephemeral streams, tributaries, and wetlands were protected by the Environmental Protection Agency. Permits are essential to protect not only the environment but landowners as well. The New Mexico Environment Department is in the process of developing its own surface water discharge permitting program, as the EPA’s jurisdiction contracted commensurately with the Supreme Court’s …

A New Jurisprudence Of Constitutional Duty: Moving Beyond Deshaney Through The Nmcra, Levi A. Monagle, Aaron E. Whiteley
New Mexico Law Review
The United States Supreme Court’s holding in the seminal case of DeShaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services has long foreclosed the viability of a wide array of failure-to-protect claims under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The linchpin of DeShaney is a “constitutional duty” analysis that is implicated only in select circumstances and serves as a threshold inquiry and a gatekeeping device. With the New Mexico Supreme Court’s articulation of a foreseeability-free duty analysis in Rodriguez v. Del Sol Shopping Center in 2014, and the Legislature’s passage of the New Mexico …

All Cases Great And Small: Fufilling The Nmcra's Promise Of Attorney Fees, Isaac M. Green, Seth E. Montgomery
New Mexico Law Review
Section 5 of the New Mexico Civil Rights Act (NMCRA) permits a court to award “reasonable” attorney fees to a “prevailing plaintiff.” In this way Section 5 parallels its federal analog, 42 U.S.C. § 1988, which similarly allows a “prevailing party” to recover “reasonable” attorney fees in federal civil rights suits. But despite this language in the federal statute, a string of U.S. Supreme Court decisions have circumscribed the availability of attorney fees in suits brought under § 1983. This restriction on attorney fees has led to what Professor Joanna Schwartz calls the biggest obstacle to civil rights litigation in …

A Rechargeable Metal-Co2 Battery Using Lower-Cost Materials, Chris Fetrow
A Rechargeable Metal-Co2 Battery Using Lower-Cost Materials, Chris Fetrow
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
High energy density, low-cost chemical conversion batteries are widely studied for their potential application to applications in which current battery technologies are unsuitable replacements for fossil fuel-powered systems. The demonstration of rechargeable chemical conversion batteries, and particularly batteries without the fatal flaw of high overpotential due to the difficulties inherent to chemical conversion reactions, is of great interest to further both this aim. In this work, a secondary Al-CO2 battery was demonstrated using a homogeneous aluminum iodide redox mediator to enable the battery’s discharge and charge at a high energy density and a low overpotential of 0.05 Volts. The operation …

Improved Rational Approximation Of Near-To-Far Propagation Kernels For The Wave Equation, Sampson Owusu
Improved Rational Approximation Of Near-To-Far Propagation Kernels For The Wave Equation, Sampson Owusu
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
The 3-space, 1-time dimensional scalar wave equation, or 3+1 wave equation, describes the propagation of scalar or acoustic waves. The unforced homogeneous equation admits a class of outgoing solutions relative to a chosen fixed center, so called “multipole” solutions. This thesis examines near-to-far signal propagation in the context of these multipole solutions. Given a time-series (history of values) for a multipole solution recorded at a radius r1, near- to-far signal propagation recovers the corresponding time-series at larger radius r2 ≫ r1. This propagation takes into account both the appropriate time delay r2 − r1 and corrections to the wave shape. …
Increasing Bacterial Tolerance And Metabolism Of The Biofuel, N-Butanol Using Community-Level Evolution And Functional Genomics, Kayley T. You Mak
Increasing Bacterial Tolerance And Metabolism Of The Biofuel, N-Butanol Using Community-Level Evolution And Functional Genomics, Kayley T. You Mak
Biology ETDs
Bioremediation capability should be developed along with biofuel technology to mitigate the potential damage of future spills. Biobutanol is being developed since n-butanol is more energy dense and less volatile than ethanol. A bottleneck for industrial production of biobutanol is its toxicity; most microbes cannot survive ~1.5% v/v. Thus, microbial bioremediation of n-butanol would need microbes that can both tolerate and metabolize butanol. We used ecological and evolutionary biology approaches to find bacteria that could tolerate and metabolize butanol. Ecological community-level assays followed by 16S amplicon sequencing were completed to identify butanol-tolerant artificial bacterial communities. Secondly, we looked for bacteria …

¿Qué Lengua Hablas?: The Interaction Of Languages, Education And Identity In A Majority/Minority Sociolinguistic Setting, Luisa F. Hurtado Iglesias
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This thesis presents a comparative analysis of language dynamics in two distinct contexts: the Tres Fronteras region, where Spanish and Portuguese intersect, and Cauca, Colombia, where Namtrik and Spanish coexist. Through qualitative research methods including interviews and ethnographic observations, the study examines the roles of these languages in shaping social interactions, cultural identities, and community dynamics.
By exploring language use patterns, attitudes, and policies in these regions, the thesis seeks to uncover similarities and differences in the ways Spanish, Portuguese, and Namtrik influence individuals' sense of belonging and cultural expression. Furthermore, the study examines the impact of historical, social, and …

The Enzymatic Regulation Of Contraction-Induced Toll-Like Receptor 4 Shedding From C2c12 Myotubes, Rebekah C. Gridley
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Stimulated contractions are shown to increase toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) release from C2C12 myotubes in vitro. The purpose of this study was to determine if the release of TLR4 from myotubes is controlled by proteolytic membrane cleavage. A broad-spectrum metalloprotease inhibitor was used to test this hypothesis in a C2C12 cell culture model, and TLR4 concentrations in the cell culture supernatant were measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) following stimulated myotube contractions.
ELISA analysis revealed TLR4 concentrations below the sensitivity threshold of the ELISA kit for all experimental conditions. In confirming the effectiveness of the electrical pulse stimulation (EPS) treatment, …
Development And Evaluation Of Muon Scattering Tomography Reconstruction Techniques For Spent Fuel Verification, Jesus J. Valencia
Development And Evaluation Of Muon Scattering Tomography Reconstruction Techniques For Spent Fuel Verification, Jesus J. Valencia
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
The International Atomic Energy Agency has acknowledged the need to “efficiently verify and maintain knowledge of spent fuel in shielding/storage/transport containers at all points in their life cycle”. Cosmic-ray muon scattering tomography has shown potential to create reconstruction images of dry cask contents that would be useful for in-situ verification of spent fuel within dry casks.
In this document, several muon scattering tomography reconstruction techniques are explored using experimental track data through a partially filled dry cask container and steel drum test object. Two three-dimensional reconstruction techniques, a backprojection and newly developed combined depth of field algorithm, are evaluated. The …
Longitudinal Spatial Trends In U.S. Pedestrian And Bicyclist Fatalities, Ossiris Rodriguez, Nicholas N. Ferenchak
Longitudinal Spatial Trends In U.S. Pedestrian And Bicyclist Fatalities, Ossiris Rodriguez, Nicholas N. Ferenchak
Civil Engineering ETDs
Between 2009 and 2022 in the United States (U.S.), pedestrian fatalities increased 82.3% and bicyclist fatalities increased 70.8%. Several studies have researched crash characteristics such as the people and roadways involved in these crashes. But where are these fatalities occurring within our regions and what spatial characteristics of these locations could be influencing this trend? We analyzed pedestrian and bicyclist fatality data from the last two decades using NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) in relation to built-environment and socio-economic characteristics (such as street network density, transit access, poverty, and educational attainment) obtained from the U.S. Census and the U.S. …

Toothbrushing And Flossing Sequence: The Most Effective Way To Reduce Dental Plaque Biofilm, Kimberly Ann Obiedo
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Dental plaque biofilm remaining on oral structures causes disease processes such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and dental caries. This study's purpose was to determine which sequence of dental biofilm removal is more effective, toothbrushing followed by flossing or flossing followed by toothbrushing. The study was conducted using an experimental approach with a split mouth design. A pre and post plaque index score was determined for each participant using Ramfjord’s tooth assignment and all data was recorded on a plaque control data sheet. Thirty-two adults were eligible to participate in the study. The average results of the primary plaque score were 78% …
