Annual Report Of The University, 1967-1968, University Of New Mexico Jun 1968

Annual Report Of The University, 1967-1968, University Of New Mexico

UNM Annual Reports

One of the tasks of a university president is to examine the strengths and weaknesses of his institution and, on the basis of this evaluation, recommend directions for the future course of the university. Accordingly, during the months since I took office on July 1, I have given a great deal of consideration to existing conditions and to the formulation of objectives which I believe will be of prime importance to the University of New Mexico in the years immediately ahead. There are four goals which I believe arc basic-maintaining the autonomy and integrity of the University, enhancing and improving …

A Proposed Program For The Preparation Of Elementary Teacher Educators In The Republic Of Viet-Nam., Doan Huu Khanh Jun 1968

A Proposed Program For The Preparation Of Elementary Teacher Educators In The Republic Of Viet-Nam., Doan Huu Khanh

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The primary purpose of this study is to propose a program for the preparation of elementary teacher educators in the Republic of Viet-Nam. More specifically, the proposal is a design of a one-year professional program to provide pre-service training for qualified individuals to become normal school instructors and/or to prepare them for other leadership positions in elementary education.

The study underlies three major problems of Viet-Namese education: (~) the inadequate training of elementary school teachers; (b) the lack of a qualified teacher education staff; and (c) the challenge for change in Vietnamese education.

Pupil Growth As A Function Of Teacher Flexibility, Student Independence, And Student Conformance, Stanley James Hipwood Jun 1968

Pupil Growth As A Function Of Teacher Flexibility, Student Independence, And Student Conformance, Stanley James Hipwood

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Using a sample of 394 student subjects and six teachers, the author sought to prove the hypothesis that highly independent students would achieve a higher degree of pupil growth in mathematics mastery than would highly conforming students when both groups were under the teaching influence of high flexibility teachers. The California Psychological Inventory (CPI) by Harrison G. Gough was the test instrument selected to test student independence (Achievement via Independence Scale -- Ai), and teacher flexibility (Flexibility Scale -- Fx). Pupil growth in mathematics was determined by a pretest- posttest application of the Quantitative Thinking section …

The Value Of Mixed Fixed-Interval Schedules With And Without Informative Stimuli, Phillip B. Wootton May 1968

The Value Of Mixed Fixed-Interval Schedules With And Without Informative Stimuli, Phillip B. Wootton

Psychology ETDs

A number of observing response experiments indicate animals prefer informative over noninformative response alternatives. This preference is exhibited even though there is no objective difference in reward conditions to favor one alternative over the other. In the present experiment, an equivalent mixture of short and long fixed-interval schedules was programmed in informative and noninformative response alternatives. The present approach sought to determine whether preference for the informative alternative could be rationalized from an estimation of the relative values of the fixed-interval schedules and mixtures. In conjunction with this purpose, preferences were evaluated over a broad range of short and long …

Effects Of Stimulus Codability And Duration Of Stimulus Exposure On Recognition Memory For Random Shapes, Terry Clyde Daniel May 1968

Effects Of Stimulus Codability And Duration Of Stimulus Exposure On Recognition Memory For Random Shapes, Terry Clyde Daniel

Psychology ETDs

An experiment was conducted investigating the role of distinctive verbal labels and scaled stimulus codability on the temporal course of recognition memory for complex random shapes. Three between-S variables, delay interval, pretraining type, and stimulus codability, were combined with one within-S variable, stimulus exposure duration, into a 3x2x2x(2) factorial design. Subjects were given observation or relevant verbal label pretraining with either high or low codability stimuli and were subsequently tested on a five-stimulus forced-choice recognition task either immediately, 15 minutes, or 1 week after training. All subjects saw one half of the stimuli for their condition for 6.0 seconds on …

Role Of Observing Responses In Perceptual Learning, Dieter W. Jahns May 1968

Role Of Observing Responses In Perceptual Learning, Dieter W. Jahns

Psychology ETDs

The experiment was designed to test the hypothesis that the distributions of observing responses made within a stimulus differ during tactual stimulus predifferentiation training as a function of the labeling task used and that subsequent perceptual performance can be related to correlated differential practice with the stimuli during predifferentiation, as exhibited by differences in observing-response distributions during the earlier task. One hundred twenty Ss were given a multiple-shape recognition test subsequent to one of 12 experimental conditions: 2, 4, or 8 trials of either observation or equivalence stimulus-predifferentiation training under one of two conditions of observing-response freedom. The results indicated …

Conditioned Response Sub-Class Variability., David Perkins May 1968

Conditioned Response Sub-Class Variability., David Perkins

Psychology ETDs

In order to test the hypothesis that resistance to extinction is directly related to the amount of response sub-class variability reinforced during acquisition, the number of different response subclasses reinforced during acquisition was directly controlled and subsequently related to resistance to extinction. A response subclass was defined as a response to one of eight key locations on a horizontally oriented response strip which was presumed to represent a topographical response continuum.

Seven groups of 3 pigeons each were first trained to peck the transilluminated response strip for 3-sec. access to grain reinforcement. Each group received a total of 752 reinforcements …

Samuel Johnson's Critical Principles:A Chronological Study., Shirley Ann Johnston May 1968

Samuel Johnson's Critical Principles:A Chronological Study., Shirley Ann Johnston

English Language and Literature ETDs

The Victorian dismissal of Samuel Johnson as a narrow, orthodox nee-classical critic is no longer considered valid by Johnsonians. But there is little agreement on what were Johnson's basic principles, and he often is considered inconsistent. Some of his controversial judgments are misunderstood, and his general critical position misrepresented, because distinctions are not made between his carefully weighed judgments written for publication and offhand conversational opinions handed down by Boswell and others. Moreover, Johnson's criticism commonly is represented by popular passages from select pieces of criticism, intermixed without regard for circumstances or time of composition, and sometimes taken from context. …

Hippocampal Eeg Correlates Of Behavior, Thomas Leroy Bennett Jr. May 1968

Hippocampal Eeg Correlates Of Behavior, Thomas Leroy Bennett Jr.

Psychology ETDs

Implications that the hippocampus plays a major role in mediating behavior have been described by animal lesion and human clinical studies. The exact function of this structure is, however, in dispute. This is particularly true with regard to orienting, learning and decision making as reflected by electrical activity (theta) recorded from this structure. Contrary evidence concerning these functions has been obtained by Grastyán, Adey and their associates. In the present research, three task variables which may have accounted for their different findings were examined. These methodological variations included the modality of the stimuli presented to the animal, the presence of …
