Developmental And Socio-Cultural Aspects Of Imagery In The Picture-Word Paired-Associate Learning Of Children., Jo Anne P. Calhoun Aug 1971

Developmental And Socio-Cultural Aspects Of Imagery In The Picture-Word Paired-Associate Learning Of Children., Jo Anne P. Calhoun

Psychology ETDs

This study was designed to investigate developmental and cultural factors in children's ability to use imagery in learning and retaining specific paired-associate tasks.

256 Ss were studied, half of whom were drawn from a middle class Anglo population, the other half from a lower socioeconomic Spanish American population. Each socio-cultural sample was divided into four age groups: preschoolers (4 year olds), 1st graders, 3rd graders, and 5th graders. The Ss learned 4 paired-associate (PA) lists of 5 pairs each, in which the items were pictures (P) and orally presented words (W). The 4 lists consisted of the following S-R combinations …

The Emergence Of The American Aesthetic Statement In The Nineteenth Century:James Jackson Jarves., David A. Holtz Jul 1971

The Emergence Of The American Aesthetic Statement In The Nineteenth Century:James Jackson Jarves., David A. Holtz

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation is an investigation of the later, or art historical and aesthetic writings of James Jackson Jarves with the purpose of showing how Jares was the recipient of the colonial, Federalist and Jacksonian strains of aesthetic thinking of the United States, and how he combined these with contemporary European influences, especially Ruskin, Rio, Lindsay and Jameson to produce the first fully integrated documents on art by an American before American art and aesthetics became predominantly international in their concept and execution. An effort was made to trace the emergence and development of such canons of thought as idealism, pietism, …

Paradise: The Failure Of An Ideal., Nancy C. Cotton Jul 1971

Paradise: The Failure Of An Ideal., Nancy C. Cotton

English Language and Literature ETDs

A lost paradise in man's mythic past has evoked traditionally a feeling of intense nostalgia. Yet in Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, in Marvell's garden lyrics, in Gulliver's "Voyage to the Houyhnhnms," and in Rasselas, this elegiac sentiment is countered by a sense of boredom and dissatisfaction with the state of paradise. Partly by relating paradise and stoicism and partly through the means of parody and comedy, these works describe an impossible relationship between a life of reason, fulfillment, and harmony, and a human nature of unappeasable desires. Thus, there is a shift of concentration from the object of perception …

Thinking, Freedom, And Intersubjectivity In The Philosophy Of Merleau-Ponty., Thomas W. King Jul 1971

Thinking, Freedom, And Intersubjectivity In The Philosophy Of Merleau-Ponty., Thomas W. King

Philosophy ETDs

Merleau-Ponty claims to have! overcome the traditional philosophical problem of the dualism of the body and the mind by describing their unity in an ambiguous "body-subject." However, it is easily demonstrated that in addition to the "body-subject11 or "pre-reflexive consciousness" Merleau-Ponty must and does allow a true and separate reflexive consciousness. It is just this reflexive consciousness, "mind," which must be reunited with the body, "body-subject," in order to overcome the dualism. Merleau-Ponty has only added a kind of subjectivity to the body, he has not united the traditional senses of "body" and "mind," both of which he must allow. …

Post-Discrimination Gradients: The Averaging Hypothesis, Michael Glenn Grisham Jun 1971

Post-Discrimination Gradients: The Averaging Hypothesis, Michael Glenn Grisham

Psychology ETDs

The averaging hypothesis states that intermediate rates in generalization tests represent a composite of two interresponse time (IRT) topographies established during prior acquisition. A short-IRT topography, characteristic of SD responding, and a long-IRT topography, characteristic of SΔ responding, occur in different proportions as a function of generalization test stimulus value. Demonstrations of averaging have had limited generality due to departures from the typical discrimination training and test procedures. The present experiment investigated averaging in a context distinguished from typical discrimination training and test procedures only by the use of separate manipulanda for the collection of SD and …

An Investigation Of Holland's Theory Of Vocational Psychology, Dale Mitchell Johnson May 1971

An Investigation Of Holland's Theory Of Vocational Psychology, Dale Mitchell Johnson

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of the study was to investigate questions which were generated within three basic areas of Holland's theory of vocational psychology with respect to a sample of technical-vocational students. The three phases of the study were related to occupational classification, personality consistency, and personality patterns as they relate to technical-vocational training success. A sample of 393 students majoring in eleven different technical and vocational fields were administered the Vocational Preference Inventory (VPI). All students in the sample were enrolled in, and had completed a substantial portion of their training in technical, vocational, and beauty schools in Albuquerque, New Mexico. …

Interaction Process Analysis Of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming: Toward A Phenomenological Criticism Of Drama, Joseph Anthony Hunt May 1971

Interaction Process Analysis Of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming: Toward A Phenomenological Criticism Of Drama, Joseph Anthony Hunt

English Language and Literature ETDs

Much contemporary criticism tends to judge and interpret theater on preconceived grounds peculiar to the critic, rather than in terms of dramatic action--the play itself. In part, the critic who is responsible for clarifying the meaning of often perplexing, "open" forms of contemporary drama has been handed an impossible task, for the playwrights are apparently dedicated to a view of reality that doggedly refuses to follow a set, external pattern capable of resolution into easy meaning. An excellent example is Harold Pinter's The Homecoming, a play which has led critics to elaborate, subjective interpretations in their attempts to resolve its …
