Muscle Fatigue At The End Of A Maximal Oxygen Consumption Test, Gustavo Sierra

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

Fatigue is a task dependent multifactorial phenomenon, and the most common tool to analyze it is the VO2max test. The purpose of this study was to investigate if muscle is exhaustively taxed at the end of a VO2max test. This was based on data from sEMG, heart rate, and force applied to the pedals during and immediately after a VO2max test compared to an intense anaerobic test. Methods. 12 male participants (mean ± SD age = 28.09 ± 6.55 years, height = 176.7 ± 2.97 cm, weight = 73.31 ± 8.44 kg, and VO2max = 60.93 ± 9.75 mL/kg/min) were …

Blue Desire: Narrative Structure, Desire, And Intertextuality In Abdellatif Kechiche's Blue Is The Warmest Color, Kathryn Chaffee

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis looks at the ways in which desire becomes a fil conducteur throughout Abdellatif Kechiches Blue is the Warmest Color (2013). My first chapter presents Kechiche's use of narrative structure in the film in order to illustrate Adèle's alternation between active and passive drives characteristic of young girls before Freudian repression. In my next chapter, I discuss the joint and multiple gazes presented in Blue through Bracha Ettinger's conception of the matrixial and John Berger's Ways of Seeing. My final chapter suggests that Adèle experiences Hegelian recognition both in her relationship with Emma and in two texts presented in …

A Before-School Counselor Intervention That Promotes Peer Relational Skills And Influences Prosocial Behavior, Jennifer Rogers Jun 2015

A Before-School Counselor Intervention That Promotes Peer Relational Skills And Influences Prosocial Behavior, Jennifer Rogers

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation was to understand the student experience and perception of change after participating in a before-school counselor intervention focused on learning prosocial behaviors and developing peer relational skills. This evaluation included both how students experienced the program and if they perceived any change in themselves after participating in the program. Qualitative methods are often used in evaluations because they tell the program's story by capturing and communicating the participant's stories (Patton, 2003, p. 2). The purpose of this type of method was to illuminate the process and outcomes of a program. The intent of qualitative findings …

Constructivism served as the theoretical grounding by which the case study was conducted to allow for the participant to describe his …

Transnational Connections Of The Mexican Left With The Chicano Movement, 1960s-1970s, Nydia A. Martinez Jun 2015

Transnational Connections Of The Mexican Left With The Chicano Movement, 1960s-1970s, Nydia A. Martinez

History ETDs

My dissertation analyzes the nature of the transnational solidarity movements established between Chicana/o and Mexican activists through the 1960s and 1970s in the midst of the Mexican Dirty War, the Chicana/o Movement, and Third World Solidarity movements. These claims of political solidarity between these two groups rested on ideas of a shared sense of cultural, historical, ethnic, and political origins. Through the combination of a wide range of archival sources and oral interviews collected in nine archives across Mexico and the U.S., this dissertation reconstructs the historical process of these solidarity movements from a variety of perspectives, including urban students …

Listen, Then Speak: Foregrounding Womens Spaces, Stories, And Relationships In Dramatic Writing, Irene Loy Jun 2015

Listen, Then Speak: Foregrounding Womens Spaces, Stories, And Relationships In Dramatic Writing, Irene Loy

Theatre & Dance ETDs

In this essay, I provide documentation for my theory and practice during this MFA degree. I begin with a short personal essay on my auto-biography leading up to and including this program. Then I follow with an overview of the theoretical underpinnings to my writing practice. Of particular importance here is the framing of listening and spaciousness as feminine and of speaking and activity as masculine, as a means of underscoring the inherent value of that which has traditionally been undervalued in the history of dramatic literature. This characterizes a move toward women's bodies, rather than away from them, including …

Memory, History, And Forgetting In The Sandra Allen Collection Of Papers On Mormonism: A Feminist Rhetorical Historiography Of Institutional Intervention In The Equal Rights Amendment, Valerie Kinsey

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation leverages archival theory, public memory theory, feminist historiography, and rhetorical theory to argue that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reinterpreted the Mormon past to engender identification and foster political action during the Equal Rights Amendment ratification period (1976-1981). Chapter One provides readers with an orientation to the Sandra Allen Collection of Papers on Mormonism and argues that its creator, Sandra Allen, marshaled her understanding of archiving, history writing, and institutional archives to make her history public. Chapter Two: On Memory uses theories of public memory to explain why the Mormon Church built the Nauvoo Monument …

Getting On The Same Page: The Hermeneutics Of Peer Feedback In Composition Classrooms, Mellisa Huffman Jun 2015

Getting On The Same Page: The Hermeneutics Of Peer Feedback In Composition Classrooms, Mellisa Huffman

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation reconceptualizes print-based and virtual peer feedback (peer review, peer editing, and peer response) within composition classrooms as hermeneutic or interpretive acts. Grounding peer feedback within philosophical hermeneutics explains why empirical research and anecdotal evidence illustrate contradictions regarding peer feedbacks benefits to students. Students' interpretations of what is happening/supposed to happen within peer feedback contexts impacts their performances in these contexts, and these interpretations occur through complex interplays of rhetorical, cultural, linguistic, and contextual interpretive fields. Enacting a hermeneutic pedagogy, which consists of engaging students in a series of scaffolded preparatory and reflective activities, collaborating with students in determining …

The Family Caregiver's Experience: Examining The Positive And Negative Aspects Of Compassion Satisfaction And Compassion Fatigue Using A Stress Process Model, Susan Lynch

Nursing ETDs

Family caregivers significantly contribute to the provision of health care for their family members. This complex care can result in stress that may lead to both positive and negative consequences for the caregiver. Current literature tends to focus on negative consequences such as caregiver burden. Therefore, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction are proposed as concepts that may better reflect the family caregiving experience. Compassion fatigue is comprised of two components; burnout and secondary traumatic stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the concept of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among family caregivers and to explore the relationship between …

Effects Of Holistic And Analytic Instructional Approaches On The Acquisition Of Various Types Of Formulaic Sequences: An Empirical Study Of Adult Learners Of English As A Second Language, Valentina Temina-Kingsolver

Linguistics ETDs

This study investigated whether different instructional approaches affected adult English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) learners production and recognition of target formulaic sequences, as measured by oral and written responses on pretest and posttest and a psycholinguistic experiment. Specifically, the goal of the study was to replicate and extend prior research that examines the ways non-native speakers of English acquire and process various types of formulaic sequences in their oral and written production and the validity of holistic storage and processing of those sequences in the learner's mind (Jiang & Nekrasova, 2007). Eighteen adult ESL students were randomly assigned to the following conditions: (a) …

Many governments, including Mexico City's, are introducing institutional and other policy changes that recognize, manage and promote urban agriculture. This study looked at urban agriculture projects, mostly in marginalized communities, within the 16 boroughs of Mexico …

Censured Motherhood: Communicating The Double Bind Between Motherhood And The Professoriate, Sarah Fuller May 2015

Censured Motherhood: Communicating The Double Bind Between Motherhood And The Professoriate, Sarah Fuller

Communication ETDs

This study revealed the interpersonal networks and communication resources available to women who are both mothers and professors in a large university in the southwestern United States. The current study was an inquiry using approaches from the ethnography of communication (EOC), which holds that culture and communication are inseparable and synonymous (Carbaugh, 2007; Covarrubias, 2002; Philipsen, 1997).Therefore, by interviewing nine women who are mothers of at least one child living at home and are also full-time professors, I accessed utterances that explicate cultural enactments of motherhood in the academy. During the course of this study, I asked the professors who …

Cartography Of Power: The 47th State's Aversion To Graffiti Art, Priscila Poliana May 2015

Cartography Of Power: The 47th State's Aversion To Graffiti Art, Priscila Poliana

Architecture and Planning ETDs

While unauthorized graffiti has been historically associated with crime, vandalism, and property damage, the visual incursions of corporate advertisers on urban landscapes have been mostly exempt from criminal characterization– by purchasing private and public spaces for cash, upfront. The persistent transfer of capital to the private sector, and by extension commercialization of public spaces and services, invades individual privacy by intensifying exposure to relentless, unsolicited advertisement. Guerrilla Art thus emerges as a force challenging the favoritism of consumer culture vis-à -vis the agency of ordinary citizens to utilize the urban fabric as a medium for expression and public discourse. Every …

Natural Resource Revolutions: Mexico And Cuba Within The Sphere Of U.S. Hegemony, Joseph J. García May 2015

Natural Resource Revolutions: Mexico And Cuba Within The Sphere Of U.S. Hegemony, Joseph J. García

Latin American Studies ETDs

The improbable trajectories of Mexico and Cuba give rise to compelling questions: in what ways have the revolutionary governments of Mexico and Cuba been able to practice successful defiance of the United States hegemon of the twentieth century? And how has that defiance helped to define U.S. foreign policy in Latin America? This dissertation presents a detailed examination of the contexts surrounding both the Mexican and Cuban Revolutions and their struggle against imperialist-driven interventions by the United States in Latin America and the Caribbean. I argue that through strategic decisions, the Mexican and Cuban revolutionary governments were able to ward …

The Good And (Breaking) Bad Of Deceptive Police Practices, Elizabeth N. Jones Apr 2015

The Good And (Breaking) Bad Of Deceptive Police Practices, Elizabeth N. Jones

New Mexico Law Review

This Article questions whether a nexus exists between Breaking Bad, the popular series that regularly depicts strategic police deception, and the systemic abuse of force infecting the actual police department featured on that show. First, it focuses on investigative “strategic police deception” depicted in Breaking Bad as a potential gateway to the unreasonable use of force. The recent transgressions perpetrated by the APD evidence this concern. The show demonstrates the multi-faceted complexities of such police practices—from questionable discretionary decisions and psychological coercion, to deliberate deception and outright lies. Much of the policing depicted on Breaking Bad passes technical legal muster, …

Breaking Bad In The Classroom, Max Minzner Apr 2015

Breaking Bad In The Classroom, Max Minzner

New Mexico Law Review

This Essay seeks to serve two ends. First, it provides a map for the use of the Breaking Bad series in the core constitutional criminal procedure course focusing on the limits on police investigation arising from the Fourth and Fifth Amendments. Video is a powerful mechanism for presenting hypotheticals to students. Recent work on other shows such as The Wire has recognized the value of television as an alternative pedagogical technique in the law school curriculum. Breaking Bad deserves to take its place as a teaching aid in a criminal procedure classroom. The first part of this Essay identifies usable …
