A Systematic Review Of Quality Of Life Assessment Tools For Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Brianne Leigh Conner

Public Administration ETDs

AIM: The quality of life (QOL) construct is proposed as a method to assess outcomes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) at multiple levels. The aim of this research is to identify and systematically review QOL assessment tools for adults with all levels of I/DD that could be used within disability service systems to examine the micro (individual), meso (organizational), and macro (system) levels of QOL outcomes. METHOD: A systematic search of the disability and QOL literature published between 1990 and 2014 was conducted in order to identify QOL assessment tools that met the inclusion criteria. 35 articles …

The Malleability Of University Students' Beliefs, Values, And Attitudes In The Classroom Setting, Glory Emmanuel Feb 2016

The Malleability Of University Students' Beliefs, Values, And Attitudes In The Classroom Setting, Glory Emmanuel

Psychology ETDs

Beliefs, values, and attitudes (BVAs) are central to a persons identity and worldview but can be refined and influenced through the individual's surrounding environment and experience. The academic setting is one environment that impacts BVAs. This study examined if university students' BVAs are influenced over a semester by students' attributes, their professor, and the classroom context by testing three main hypotheses: 1) students demonstrate BVA change over time while professors' BVAs remain relatively stable over time; 2) students' attributes influence BVA change; and 3) students, especially those who have a positive experience in the class, assimilate to their professor's BVAs. …

Bibliometrics And Social Network Analysis Of Doctoral Research: Research Trends In Distance Learning, Jason Skinner Feb 2016

Bibliometrics And Social Network Analysis Of Doctoral Research: Research Trends In Distance Learning, Jason Skinner

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

The study investigated research topics of doctoral dissertations that examined issues in distance learning from 2000-2014. Twelve reviews of research on distance learning, spanning from 1997-2015, were identified. It was found that only one of these reviews of research (Davies, Howell, & Petri, 2010) looked at doctoral dissertations. The authors noted that investigating dissertations was complicated and daunting because 1) only a fraction made full text available and 2) there were a large number of dissertations in the area. To counter for these complications the current study utilized bibliometric and social network analysis to investigate dissertation database listings, including abstracts, …

A New Kind Of Therapeutic Relationship: Exploring Factors That Influence The Effectiveness Of Computer-Delivered Interventions For Alcohol Use Disorders, William P. Campbell Iv Feb 2016

A New Kind Of Therapeutic Relationship: Exploring Factors That Influence The Effectiveness Of Computer-Delivered Interventions For Alcohol Use Disorders, William P. Campbell Iv

Psychology ETDs

Computer-delivered interventions (CDI) for alcohol use comprise a relatively new treatment for individuals struggling with problematic drinking. While CDIs for alcohol misuse have proliferated over the last decade, much remains unknown about factors that influence their effectiveness. This study evaluated the performance of Overcoming Addictions (OA), a CDI based on the principles of SMART Recovery (SR). Subjects were drawn from a sample of 189 participants enrolled in a randomized clinical trial (RCT) that compared three and six-month outcomes for two interventions for problematic alcohol use: control participants were enrolled in SR meetings (face to face and/or online); experimental participants also …

Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity And Client Change: Using Roc Analysis To Explore The Relationship Between Mi Fidelity Level And Drinking Outcome., Daniel Fischer Feb 2016

Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity And Client Change: Using Roc Analysis To Explore The Relationship Between Mi Fidelity Level And Drinking Outcome., Daniel Fischer

Psychology ETDs

Those engaged in the research and practice of MI have shown interest in treatment adherence as an indicator of effective MI and have expressed curiosity in the threshold at which MI practice could be viewed as good enough'. The most widely used and often cited of MI integrity measures are the Motivational Interviewing Skills Code (MISC) and the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity code (MITI). These adherence tools share similar descriptive coding systems for therapist in-session behavior. MI fidelity standards are often used as reference points for therapist performance, yet practitioners rarely meet full criteria. Further, substandard ratings have been associated …

A Time To Plan, A Time To Remember: An Eeg Double Dissociation Of Cognitive Control Instantiation Due To Temporal Delay, Jacqueline R. Janowich Feb 2016

A Time To Plan, A Time To Remember: An Eeg Double Dissociation Of Cognitive Control Instantiation Due To Temporal Delay, Jacqueline R. Janowich

Psychology ETDs

Cognitive control is critical in adaptively guiding cognition, shaping an optimal balance between acting efficiently with existing rules, and remaining flexible enough to respond to new information. Proactive cognitive control utilizes context information to bias processing (in a top-down manner) and prepare for an upcoming event, presumably through dynamic use of highly related executive processes, including working memory maintenance, attention, and goal switching. Counter to the frequent investigation of proactive control as a unitary construct, we hypothesize that proactive control varies with the temporal delay over which goals need to be held in mind, and can be at least partly …

Health Outcomes And Optimal Choices In Urban Areas In Response To Environmental Shocks And Changes In Forest Amenities, Benjamin Jones Feb 2016

Health Outcomes And Optimal Choices In Urban Areas In Response To Environmental Shocks And Changes In Forest Amenities, Benjamin Jones

Economics ETDs

Forests and trees may play important roles in human health outcomes and choices made by individuals in urban areas. Disruptions to forest amenities and tree canopy coverage caused by shocks to the natural environment may affect urban air quality, behavioral decisions, time use habits, and environmental management. This work exploits two distinct and unrelated shocks to forests in the United States to investigate the environmental and health economic links in urban areas between people and trees, and a proposed deeply ingrained role for environmental health in how people live, interact, optimize in their communities. The first chapter argues that environmental …

Development Of A Group Dynamic Functional Connectivity Pipeline For Magnetoencephalography Data And Its Application To The Human Face Processing Network, Per Lysne Feb 2016

Development Of A Group Dynamic Functional Connectivity Pipeline For Magnetoencephalography Data And Its Application To The Human Face Processing Network, Per Lysne

Psychology ETDs

Since its inception, functional neuroimaging has focused on identifying sources of neural activity. Recently, interest has turned to the analysis of connectivity between neural sources in dynamic brain networks. This new interest calls for the development of appropriate investigative techniques. A problem occurs in connectivity studies when the differing networks of individually analyzed subjects must be reconciled. One solution, the estimation of group models, has become common in fMRI, but is largely untried with electromagnetic data. Additionally, the assumption of stationarity has crept into the field, precluding the analysis of dynamic systems. Group extensions are applied to the sparse irMxNE …

Examining Committed Action In Chronic Pain: Further Validation And Clinical Utility Of The Committed Action Questionnaire, Robert Bailey Feb 2016

Examining Committed Action In Chronic Pain: Further Validation And Clinical Utility Of The Committed Action Questionnaire, Robert Bailey

Psychology ETDs

Behavioral interventions for chronic pain often emphasize altering behavior to maximize effective functioning, particularly by decreasing pain avoidance and increasing engagement with valued activities, a hallmark of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In terms of salient processes within ACT, committed action is considered essential to the pursuit of a meaningful life. To date, however, only one study has examined the association between committed action and salient measures of functioning in the context of chronic pain treatment. The purpose of the present study was to further analyze the reliability of the CAQ in a separate sample of chronic pain patients, confirm …

Cancer Experience Modulates The Relationship Between Child And Parent Hypothalamic Pituiatary Adrenal (Hpa) Axis Functioning, Sarah Dinces

Psychology ETDs

Objective: We examine how parental stress and pediatric cancer might jointly predict child HPA function using a non-invasive method of cortisol assessment (hair samples). Methods: Parents and children from healthy control and pediatric cancer survivor families participated. Multilevel modeling was applied to data from a nested-design study (85 children, 5-18 years old, from 64 families, healthy controls: n=32; cancer survivors: n=32) to determine the relationship between parent salivary and child hair cortisol measures. Results: No main effect of the cancer experience on child cortisol was found. Parental cortisol positively correlated with child cortisol levels within healthy controls, while there was …

Relationally Constructing Sexual Identity: The Effect Of Friendship Networks On Same-Sex Sexuality Development, Alena Kuhlemeier

Sociology ETDs

Drawing upon social network and sexual identity literature, this study investigates the extent to which social integration can influence the development of non-normative sexuality. Existing literature demonstrates the significance of social support in predicting health outcomes. This study seeks to broaden existing understandings of the importance of friendships to encompass their influence on identity development among adolescents questioning their sexual identity. Specifically, this study uses logistic regression to analyze data from two waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Logistic analyses examine the interactive effects of adolescent same sex attraction and each of three distinct friendship network variables …

On The Widening Transfer Aspiration-Achievement Gap: Contextualizing The Transfer Intentions Of Community College Students In New Mexico, Thomas M. Maestas Feb 2016

On The Widening Transfer Aspiration-Achievement Gap: Contextualizing The Transfer Intentions Of Community College Students In New Mexico, Thomas M. Maestas

Sociology ETDs

This study examines the character and potential changes of transfer intention to attend four-year institutions among community college students in New Mexico. Since the early 1970s, national transfer achievement rates have declined in spite of high transfer aspirations resulting in a widening national transfer aspiration-achievement gap. Given that initial education expectations are often unmet, I study how the variability of students development and maintenance of transfer intentions may partly account for the gap. This project, designed as an inductive descriptive study, pursues one central research question: What does transferring mean to students? This question elicits more inquiry: How does a …

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

On the tenth anniversary of the Tsunami on December 26, 2014, Sri Lankan newspapers highlighted the issues that still prevail in Peraliya and other tsunami affected regions in Sri Lanka such as unresolved housing problems, displacement from homes near the ocean, poor infrastructure, and loss of livelihood (Hussain, December 26, 2014, p. AA1), and at the same time commemorated “the resilience of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children who rose from the debris and the carnage, picked up the pieces and soldiered on amidst the tears and the pain” (Editorial, Sunday Times, December 21, 2014, p. 12). A …

Control Your Destiny Or Someone Else Will: The Value Of The Ged, Elisabeth Salazar Feb 2016

Control Your Destiny Or Someone Else Will: The Value Of The Ged, Elisabeth Salazar

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact locus of control (LOC) had on the postsecondary achievement, as measured by self-reported GPA, of GED® recipients and traditional high school graduates (THSG) controlling for gender, race/ethnicity, and time in college. Data was collected from 767 GED® recipients and THSG enrolled in three postsecondary institutions in Northern New Mexico. LOC was assessed using the Adult Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Control Scale (Nowicki & Duke, 1974). The majority of respondents were Hispanic/Latino (47.34%) and Caucasian (37.34%). Responses were analyzed using Pearsons r. Although LOC did not contribute significantly to academic achievement as measured …

Using Student Feedback To Enhance Teacher Evaluation, Douglas Wine Feb 2016

Using Student Feedback To Enhance Teacher Evaluation, Douglas Wine

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Teacher evaluation literature presents a history that reflects the increasing need to account for the role of the teacher in the classroom. Extensive research has identified a series of best teaching practices but not a means to know in what context they work best, nor why they do not work for some students. Recently, student surveys provide a snapshot into teacher practices as well. This study held student conversations with underachieving and high achieving students to seek answers to the following two questions: What perspectives can students provide about what influences their achievement in the classroom? How do students perceptions …

Balance Of Threat, Balance Of Mind: Nuclear Rivalry And Arms Control, Benjamin Joseph Bonin Feb 2016

Balance Of Threat, Balance Of Mind: Nuclear Rivalry And Arms Control, Benjamin Joseph Bonin

Political Science ETDs

Under what conditions will rivals choose to accept mutual constraints, limitations, and even reductions on their capabilities for waging war? Contemporary political science lacks a strong theoretical basis for understanding this behavior, despite the fact that states in the modern era continue to negotiate and enter into arms control arrangements. This study contributes a theoretical framework and empirical analysis identifying the conditions under which nuclear-armed rivals might choose to curb their deadly arsenals. Traditional theories grounded in classical deterrence theory suggest arms control serves to preserve a deterrent status quo and prevent expensive and destabilizing arms competition; it should therefore …

The Gothic Presence Of Poland In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Jill Noel Walker Gonzalez Feb 2016

The Gothic Presence Of Poland In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Jill Noel Walker Gonzalez

English Language and Literature ETDs

The references to Poland in United States print culture indicate that Poland is a significant presence in the nineteenth-century literary imagination. Though often idealized, Poland emerges as a gothic presence registering anxieties about culture, imperialism, slavery, the Other, economic ruin, and identity. Using Roland Barthes theory of cultural code, this dissertation looks to nineteenth-century United States newspapers to consider American readers' cultural knowledge about Poland. The coded history of revolution beneath each reference to Poland indicates that Polish revolution is the mechanism that reveals American anxieties about instability, imperialism, class inequalities, and violence—all of which put pressure on America's mythic …

Siete Lenguas: The Rhetorical History Of Dolores Huerta And The Rise Of Chicana Rhetoric, Christine Beagle Feb 2016

Siete Lenguas: The Rhetorical History Of Dolores Huerta And The Rise Of Chicana Rhetoric, Christine Beagle

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation is first an historical trajectory of Chicana Rhetoric in the American polis and then a perspectival analysis of three key texts from Chicana labor rights activist and vice president of the United Farm Workers Union Dolores Huerta. The trajectory establishes an efficacious legacy of Chicana Rhetoric and the analyses of Huerta's rhetoric explore what Chicana Rhetoric is and is not through the lens of media, scholarly, and personal rendition. I argue throughout that Chicana Rhetoric is representative of current intersections in social, political, racial, and gender rhetorics and Dolores Huerta is the embodiment of these intersections. The implications …

Mémoire Et Identité Dans Les Réécritures Caribéennes : Wide Sargasso Sea Et La Migration Des Coeurs, Camille Charlery Feb 2016

Mémoire Et Identité Dans Les Réécritures Caribéennes : Wide Sargasso Sea Et La Migration Des Coeurs, Camille Charlery

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis will study creole identity in Jean Rhys Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), prequel of Jane Eyre, as well as in Maryse Condé's La Migration des Coeurs (1995), a rewriting of Wuthering Heights. I argue that both novels create a new creole identity by conversing with their original texts as well as by going beyond the official definition of creoleness. Using the concepts of obsessive memory and forced forgetfulness, I explore the tension betwee innate and constructed identity. First, I focus on the meaning of creoleness, then, I examine how memory plays a crucial role in the novels through topics …

Cerberus Amator: Underworld Imagery In The Elegies Of Tibullus And Propertius, Makaila Daeschel Feb 2016

Cerberus Amator: Underworld Imagery In The Elegies Of Tibullus And Propertius, Makaila Daeschel

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In my thesis, I explore the mythological figure of Cerberus in the Elegies of Tibullus and Propertius. My objective is to bring to light the imaginative and provocative way that both of these poets employ the imagery and history of Cerberus and by so doing to illustrate the way in which both poets present Cerberus as a depiction of the poet lover. My thesis begins with an analysis of the representations of Cerberus, both literary and in pottery, and his mythological history. I follow with a chapter exploring Tibullus use of Cerberus as a stand-in for the elegiac poet-lover as …

Survival In The Face Of Scarcity: The Undocumented Immigrant Experience, Nathalie Martin Jan 2016

Survival In The Face Of Scarcity: The Undocumented Immigrant Experience, Nathalie Martin

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, I attempt to build an empathy bridge between readers and a group of undocumented immigrants living in the American southwest, applying original qualitative research to scarcity theory. While the original empirical study discussed here was designed to bring out the financial realities of the participants, including their credit and banking habits, we uncovered some unrelated themes, including a general feeling among participants of being taken advantage of on the basis of immigration status, as well as an unwillingness to use the court system to right wrongs, even when there was a clear legal right to do so. …
