Electrophysiological Mechanisms For Preparing Control In Time, Jacqueline Rosemary Janowich Jan 2019

Electrophysiological Mechanisms For Preparing Control In Time, Jacqueline Rosemary Janowich

Psychology ETDs

Cognitive control is critical in guiding goal-directed behavior, preparing neural resources and adapting processing to promote optimal action in a given environment. According to the Dual Mechanisms of Control theory (Braver, 2012), control can be dichotomized into proactive and reactive modes of control, utilized reciprocally in ahead-of-time preparation versus last-minute, stimulus-evoked reaction. Although a substantial body of work has tested differences between proactive control and reactive control, the underlying assumption of proactive control as a unitary process has not been systematically investigated. Very little is known as to how or when proactive control is initiated, sustained, or implemented.

Understanding And Improving Patient Satisfaction In Orthopaedic Surgical Procedures: A Review, Paul J. Johnson Jan 2019

Understanding And Improving Patient Satisfaction In Orthopaedic Surgical Procedures: A Review, Paul J. Johnson

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Orthopaedic surgeons and their hospitals are being evaluated and reimbursed according to their ability to provide patient satisfaction. It behooves physicians to learn how patient satisfaction is evaluated, how patient satisfaction may be improved, and how improvements in patient satisfaction may positively influence patient outcomes both subjectively and objectively. The purpose of this review is to illuminate how evaluation works, how patient factors may affect or correlate with increased satisfaction, and how physicians can improve actions to enhance patient satisfaction. Notably, studies have found that improved care coordination, nursing follow-up, provider listening skills, providing realistic yet positive expectations, and sitting …

Design For Transtibial Modifiable Socket For Immediate Postoperative Prosthesis, Matthew N. Rush, Evan Hagin, Jane Nguyen, Victoria Lujan, Rebecca A. Dutton, Christina Salas

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Amputations are long-standing surgical procedures that have been performed for centuries; however, very little attention and urgency have been given to immediate restoration of movement and return to a normal lifestyle. In many cases, the time between amputation and prosthetic fitting can pause recovery and development of new routines. To increase recovery, immediate postoperative prostheses (IPOPs) have been developed yet these are under-utilized because of concerns for wound healing and complications with vascular diseases. Subsequently, we designed a transtibial IPOP that utilizes an ergonomic modifiable socket that allows for examination, wound care, and in situ edema control. Additionally, the IPOP …

Project Echo Revisited: Propensity Score Analysis And Hcv Treatment Outcomes, Kimberly Page, Fares Qeadan, Clifford Qualls, Karla Thornton, Sanjeev Arora

Project ECHO Bibliography

Propensity score analysis is a statistical approach to reduce bias often present in non-randomized observational studies. In this paper we use this method to re-analyze data from a study that assessed whether patients receiving HCV treatment from providers in Project ECHO had different clinical outcomes than patients treated by specialists from an academic medical center (UNM HCV clinic) but in which treatment assignment was not randomized. We modeled the best estimated probability of treatment assignment, and then assess differences overall SVR and SVR in patients with genotype 1 infection by treatment arm using Stabilized Inverse Probability of Treatment Weights (SIPTW). …

Introduction To Neutrosophic Sociology (Neutrosociology), Florentin Smarandache Jan 2019

Introduction To Neutrosophic Sociology (Neutrosociology), Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Neutrosophic Sociology (or Neutrosociology) is the study of sociology using neutrosophic scientific methods.

The huge social data that we face in sociology is full of indeterminacy: it is vague, incomplete, contradictory, hybrid, biased, ignorant, redundant, superfluous, meaningless, ambiguous, unclear, etc.

That’s why the neutrosophic sciences (which deal with indeterminacy), through the process of neutrosophication, are involved, such as: neutrosophy (a new branch of philosophy), neutrosophic set, neutrosophic logic, neutrosophic probability and neutrosophic statistics, neutrosophic analysis, neutrosophic measure, and so on.

Neutrosophy studies only the triads (A, neutA, antiA), where A is an item or a concept, that make sense in …

Plithogenic Fuzzy Whole Hypersoft Set, Construction Of Operators And Their Application In Frequency Matrix Multi Attribute Decision Making Technique, Florentin Smarandache, Shazia Rana, Madiha Qayyum, Muhammad Saeed, Bakhtawar Ali Khan

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, initially a matrix representation of Plithogenic Hypersoft Set (PHSS) is introduced and then with the help of this matrix some local operators for Plithogenic Fuzzy Hypersoft set (PFHSS) are developed. These local operators are used to generalize PFHSS to Plithogenic Fuzzy Whole Hypersoft set (PFWHSS). The generalized PFWHSS set is hybridization of Fuzzy Hypersoft set (which represent multiattributes and their subattributes as a combined whole membership i.e. case of having an exterior view of the event) and the Plithogenic Fuzzy Hypersoft set (in which multi attributes and their subattributes are represented with individual memberships case of having …

Vertical And Horizontal Modes Of Injustice In Air Pollution: A Comparison Of Law And Society In China And The Us, Mingjie Hoemmen Jan 2019

Vertical And Horizontal Modes Of Injustice In Air Pollution: A Comparison Of Law And Society In China And The Us, Mingjie Hoemmen

Natural Resources Journal

This article will compare legal remedies to both pollution and environmental injustice available in the United States and China. In 2015, China adopted a law that shares many features with the U.S. Clean Air Act that have proven successful in the United States. The law is still new, but China’s regional cultural differences, less experience with civil lawsuits, and uncertainty about the rule of law may risk its effectiveness. Furthermore, the evolving political situation in both China and the United States may change availability of remedies for class discrimination due to anti-pollution policies. Finally, this article will use the case …

Cultural Humility In Libraries, David A. Hurley, Sarah Kostelecky, Lori Townsend Jan 2019

Cultural Humility In Libraries, David A. Hurley, Sarah Kostelecky, Lori Townsend

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to introduce the idea of cultural humility, distinguish it from cultural competence, and argue that it has a role in librarianship. Design/methodology/approach: We use an interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of humility to understand what cultural humility means and how it differs from cultural competence and other approaches to intercultural communication in libraries.

Findings: Despite some reservations with the term itself, we find that a practice of cultural humility is more appropriate to front-line interactions in library contexts than cultural competence models.

Practical implications: Libraries looking to address issues in intercultural communication and …

Race-Conscious Admissions, Diversity, And Academic Freedom, Vinay Harpalani Jan 2019

Race-Conscious Admissions, Diversity, And Academic Freedom, Vinay Harpalani

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay examines the First Amendment component to race-conscious admissions policies. It argues that these policies reflect a core First Amendment value: academic freedom. It illustrates that race-conscious admissions policies promote academic freedom in two ways. One aspect of a university’s academic freedom is the selection of its own student body. Justice Felix Frankfurter stated this explicitly in his concurrence in Sweezy v. New Hampshire (1957), which was later cited in Justice Lewis Powell's influential concurrence in Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978). Additionally, the compelling interest in diversity has roots in the First Amendment. By …

Refined Neutrosophy And Lattices Vs. Pair Structures And Yinyang Bipolar Fuzzy Set, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we present the lattice structures of neutrosophic theories. We prove that Zhang-Zhang’s YinYang bipolar fuzzy set is a subclass of the Single-Valued bipolar neutrosophic set. Then we show that the pair structure is a particular case of refined neutrosophy, and the number of types of neutralities (sub-indeterminacies) may be any finite or infinite number.

Sexual Violence Among New Mexicans Living With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities, Theresa Cruz, D E. Ross-Reed Jan 2019

Sexual Violence Among New Mexicans Living With Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities, Theresa Cruz, D E. Ross-Reed

Reports & Documents

Sexual violence among people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) is highly prevalent in New Mexico and in the United States. More than one in four New Mexican adults with I/DD report a history of forced sex or attempted forced sex, compared to fewer than 1 in 10 among people without I/DD. Power imbalances between caregivers and clients, lack of sexuality education for people with I/DD, isolation, gaps in caregiver training, frequent staff turnover, a culture of ableism and compliance, and underreporting of sexual violence all contribute to disparities in sexual violence victimization.

A Pilot Study On Adolescent Mobile Phone Use, Indirect Mental Health Costs And Cultural Context Considerations – Report, Siobhan K. Yilmaz, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Adolescents are being recognized as a generation, worldwide, that require different policy approaches to improve their health and wellbeing, including the adoption of mobile based health interventions (e.g. mHealth). While mHealth interventions are growing in popularity, many researchers/policy-makers have neglected assessing potential (indirect) costs/negative consequences from their use. Evidence from the developed world shows strong associations between cell phone use and negative mental health outcomes, but such findings are minimal in developing world contexts. Using primary data from a large-scale, school-based survey of 17-19-year-old adolescents in southwestern Nepal, this report provides background information to motivate additional work investigating the presence …

Learning With Students In The Sandbox: Our Stories (Chapter 2), Cindy Pierard, Suzanne M. Schadl, Amy S. Jackson

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Students are emerging scholars whose work should be recognized and shared along with work created by established scholars. Libraries are actively engaged with student-created content and encourage students to see themselves as producers, not just consumers, of information. By shifting priorities, libraries should include student-created content in their spaces and become participants in high-impact educational practices, increasing student investment in their learning, their engagement with scholarship at the institutional level, and their success and retention. These new priorities also open the library to new campus partnerships, making student scholarship and content a common goal.

Scholarship in the Sandbox is broken into …

Undesirable Difficulties: Investigating Barriers To Students' Learning With Ebooks In A Semester-Length Course, Cindy Pierard, Vanessa Lynn Svihla, Susanne K. Clement, Bing-Shan Fazio

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Our ability to make informed decisions about ebooks is constrained by our limited understanding of how students perceive and use them. A team of librarians and a professor in learning sciences asked graduate students to serve as informants on student experience with ebooks. In two semester-long studies we analyzed student work, focusing on barriers and affordances they identified. In the first cohort, students who chose to explore ebooks uncovered affordances. In the second cohort, student comfort levels with PDF formats increased, while comfort with ebooks decreased. We discuss strategies for minimizing challenges and increasing desirable difficulties to support ebooks as …
