Fantasy-Theme Analysis Of Food Documentaries: Contention, Collaboration, And Consultation As Health Promotion Approaches, Vanessa Brandon

Communication ETDs

In this study, the medium of documentary film is explored as a potential health-promotion tool. Food documentaries have become more popular recently, and the public's awareness of food-related health issues is growing. By analyzing different approaches to documentary films about food, I unpack the many functions and social perceptions of food with regard to health. Using fantasy-theme analysis, I explore the visions of the filmmakers of three food documentaries and the health-promotion strategies employed within them. Three different approaches to motivating health-behavior change emerged from the documentaries--contention, collaboration, and consultation. Each documentary employed a different well-established and effective health-behavior change …

Exercise disrupts homeostasis and leads to the induction of an important catabolic system called autophagy. Autophagy is a beneficial cell survival process that is induced in periods of starvation. The purposes of this study are to (1) determine the time course of autophagy activation following endurance exercise at 70% of VO2max in a warm environment and (2) to determine if exercising at 50% of VO2max induces autophagy in a warm environment. Methods. Eight endurance trained subjects (2 females) participated in this study and completed a moderate intensity exercise (MIE) trial for 1h (50% of VO2max ), and a high intensity …

Presumed Vs Confirmed Full Code, K M. Rogers, Lisa Marr Jan 2014

Presumed Vs Confirmed Full Code, K M. Rogers, Lisa Marr

Hospital Medicine

Background Many problems exist regarding inpatient code status: advance directives are rarely completed in outpatient and inpatient settings; patients preferences regarding code status are often not elicited; physicians do not provide adequate information to allow patients to make informed decisions about code status; code status discussions are often delayed during an admission until it is too late for the patients to participate; and providers inappropriately extrapolate DNR orders to limit other treatments (such as artificial nutrition, ICU admission, etc.) Most hospitals default to 'Full Code' as the status for patients admitted, particularly in patients with whom a code status discussion …

Environmental Factors Influencing Drinking Water Consumption And Access In Rural Communities: Cuba, New Mexico, Courtney Thornton, Theresa Cruz, Sally Davis

Posters and Presentations

Consumption of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) contributes to increasing obesity rates because they are a highly caloric beverage with poor nutritional value. Substituting SSB consumption with water consumption will help to decrease obesity. Water consumption is affected by various factors, including water access, a clean water supply, SSB popularity, policies, recommendations, and individual perceptions. Little research has addressed water consumption in rural populations. We are investigating access to drinking water of residents of the rural multicultural town of Cuba, NM. A literature review is being conducted on the advantages of water consumption and adverse effects of SSBs. Field observations assessed …

Since the 1970s the Mississippi Choctaw have initiated many different economic enterprises ranging from manufacturing plants to resort development, owning and operating a diversified portfolio of manufacturing, service, retail, and tourism enterprises. This history of engaging with western business models offers a unique perspective for analyzing the long-term effects of these practices on a tribal community. My work with the MBCI engages a long debate over the use of capitalist business models in tribal economic development …

Consequences Of Prenatal Ethanol Exposure And Maternal Stress On Offspring, Miranda C. Staples Dec 2013

Consequences Of Prenatal Ethanol Exposure And Maternal Stress On Offspring, Miranda C. Staples

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Extensive evidence in humans suggests that exposure to insults during gestation, such as ethanol or maternal stress, can negatively impact the developing fetus in manners which can last into adulthood. These deleterious effects can include various behavioral challenges including cognitive impairments and increases in anxiety. These findings have been replicated in animal models of prenatal ethanol exposure and prenatal stress exposure, but little work has been conducted on measuring the interactive effects of the two prenatal insults in combination. Currently, there is no animal model of combined prenatal ethanol and prenatal stress exposures which has been utilized to systematically evaluate …
