Muscle Fatigue At The End Of A Maximal Oxygen Consumption Test, Gustavo Sierra
Muscle Fatigue At The End Of A Maximal Oxygen Consumption Test, Gustavo Sierra
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Fatigue is a task dependent multifactorial phenomenon, and the most common tool to analyze it is the VO2max test. The purpose of this study was to investigate if muscle is exhaustively taxed at the end of a VO2max test. This was based on data from sEMG, heart rate, and force applied to the pedals during and immediately after a VO2max test compared to an intense anaerobic test. Methods. 12 male participants (mean ± SD age = 28.09 ± 6.55 years, height = 176.7 ± 2.97 cm, weight = 73.31 ± 8.44 kg, and VO2max = 60.93 ± 9.75 mL/kg/min) were …

Impact And Reach Of A Peer-Led Health Education Intervention Utilizing Harm Reduction Strategies In An Incarcerated Population, Miranda Leah Sedillo
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Prisons are high-risk environments for communicable disease transmission. The majority of incarcerated individuals return to their communities, many with untreated disease, creating a need for disease control, prevention and treatment within the prison population. Prisoner Health is Community Health: The New Mexico Peer Education Project (NMPEP) was developed by Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) to address the epidemic of Hepatitis C transmission in the New Mexico state prison system. NMPEP is a low-cost, peer-led health education intervention aimed to increase knowledge and harm reduction techniques among incarcerated individuals prior to returning to their communities. The model is innovative …

A Tropical Flour: Manioc In The Afro-Brazilian World, 1500-1800, Joseph Leestma
Latin American Studies ETDs
This research follows the movement of the American tropical root crop manioc [Manihot esulenta] throughout the Afro-Portuguese world between ca. 1500 to ca.1800. In addition to tracing the spatial movement of the plant, this thesis will also show how manioc was culturally redefined as an African crop and how this effected its reception and meaning upon returning to the New World from Africa. In tracking the geographical diffusion of the plant from the Americas to Africa, this research relies upon primary sources on the exploration of Brazil and Africa by European travelers and accounts of the early era of the …

The main objectives of this study are to describe the food system of Mexico City; identify how the urban poor access food on an everyday basis; determine who participates in urban agriculture projects, and for what purpose; determine the nutritional, economic, physical and ecological impact urban agriculture has had on participants; and observe the impact community urban gardens have on the surrounding community (multipliers). Many governments, including Mexico City's, are introducing institutional and other policy changes that recognize, manage and promote urban agriculture. This study looked at urban agriculture projects, mostly in marginalized communities, within the 16 boroughs of Mexico …
Gcn5l1 Functions As A Mitochondrial Acetyltransferase That Regulates Mitophagy, Bradley Roy Webster
Gcn5l1 Functions As A Mitochondrial Acetyltransferase That Regulates Mitophagy, Bradley Roy Webster
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Caloric restriction (CR) increases lifespan and promotes both longevity and €˜healthy-aging. CR's benefits are dependent in part on NAD-dependent deacetylases known as sirtuins. NAD levels increase with CR promoting sirtuin-mediated deacetylation of lysine residues. Humans express seven sirtuin isoforms that localize to specific sub-cellular compartments. Sirtuins and acetylation affect numerous cellular processes including mitochondrial function. Sirt3 is the major mitochondrial deacetylase and regulates mitochondrial function namely ATP levels, oxidative stress and metabolism. Given the importance of mitochondrial acetylation and Sirt3, we hypothesized the existence of a mitochondrial-localized acetyltransferase that 1) localizes to the mitochondria; 2) has an acetyltransferase domain; and …

The Relationship Between Parks, Health, Income, And Education In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jessica Sebring Small
Architecture and Planning ETDs
As resources are becoming scarcer, Southwestern cities are looking for ways to expend less water and money, leading to removal of green spaces. This is happening alongside the current health crisis occurring throughout the United States, which is unfortunate since urban green spaces have been found to improve human health. The purpose of this study, focusing on Albuquerque, New Mexico, is to determine: (1) if those benefits appear to exist in a desert city, and (2) how additional variables, such as income and education, compare with parks regarding impact on community health. A GIS analysis was conducted using park, health, …

Spilt Milk: An Unusual Cause Of Bilateral Chylothorax, Sara Matani, J Rush Pierce Jr
Spilt Milk: An Unusual Cause Of Bilateral Chylothorax, Sara Matani, J Rush Pierce Jr
Hospital Medicine
We report a case of bilateral chylothorax without evidence of chylous fistula in a 62-year-old man following total laryngectomy and bilateral selective neck dissection for laryngeal cancer. Chylous fistulae, a well-known complication of neck dissection, occurs following 1% to 2% of these surgeries. On rare occasions, the chyle leak may communicate with the pleural space, resulting in chylothorax. This is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication. Bilateral chylothorax following neck dissection is even rarer, with less than 25 cases reported in the literature. Early diagnosis is essential to prevent complications. Physicians should have a high index of suspicion, especially when …

Earned Income Tax Credit Portability: Respecting The Autonomy Of American Families, Mary Leto Pareja
Earned Income Tax Credit Portability: Respecting The Autonomy Of American Families, Mary Leto Pareja
Faculty Scholarship
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) was a key component of the welfare reform movement that began in the 1970s and expanded in the 1990s. Politicians and the public saw the EITC as a helping hand to working families -- a way to make work pay.' The EITC today is the single largest federal anti-poverty program in the United States. Although the EITC clearly is targeted at families with children, it is not optimally structured to improve child welfare. The current rules limit EITC eligibility to a taxpayer who lives with a child more than six months of the year, …

Perceived Social Support And Loneliness As Predictors Of Cardiac Rehabilitation Outcomes, Elizabeth Stein
Psychology ETDs
Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is the most common means of targeting risk factors related to cardiovascular disease, but there are still uncertainties regarding what components of CR are most essential to successful rehabilitation. The current research focuses on perceived social support and loneliness and how these psychosocial factors influence health directly or indirectly by moderating perceived stress. Patients (n= 122) who completed a 12 week CR program agreed to participate, and they completed measures at both baseline and program completion. Multiple regression was used to determine if the direct or indirect moderation model best accounts for changes in days spend exercising, …

Structural Influences On The Photochemistry And Photophysical Properties Of P-Phenylene Ethynylenes: Aggregation Effects And Solvent Interactions, Eric Harris Hill
Structural Influences On The Photochemistry And Photophysical Properties Of P-Phenylene Ethynylenes: Aggregation Effects And Solvent Interactions, Eric Harris Hill
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Compounds based on the p-phenylene ethynylene backbone with pendant charged groups, known as conjugated polyelectrolytes, have been of particular interest in recent years due to their solubility in water, sensing properties, and biocidal activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. A series of oligomers based on these polymers were synthesized (OPEs), and several interesting questions about their photophysical and biocidal properties were raised by earlier experimental observations, which are addressed by this dissertation. The study initially focuses on the influence of the backbone length and presence of carboxyester substituents on the photophysical properties of the OPEs. Next, the photochemistry of the …
Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Elective Cesarean Deliveries And Trial Of Labor, Elisa Patterson
Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Elective Cesarean Deliveries And Trial Of Labor, Elisa Patterson
Nursing ETDs
Every year, one-third of the 4 million child-bearing women in the United States have a cesarean delivery. Of these, 91% have a repeat cesarean delivery with the birth of subsequent children. Cesarean deliveries account for more than half of childbirth-related hospitalization expenses totaling approximately $8 billion every year. A repeat cesarean delivery has a 40% greater hospital cost than a vaginal delivery. Yet, the cost of the delivery for the health-care payer is rarely addressed in the published peer-reviewed literature. The purpose of this research was to determine the cost-effectiveness of elective repeat cesarean deliveries (ERCD) compared with trials of …

Beyond The Affordable Care Act's Premium Tax Credit: Ensuring Access To Safety Net Programs, Mary Leto Pareja
Beyond The Affordable Care Act's Premium Tax Credit: Ensuring Access To Safety Net Programs, Mary Leto Pareja
Faculty Scholarship
The United States took a gigantic step toward universal health care with the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA'). Under the ACA, nearly everyone is required to have coverage, and correspondingly, no one can be turned away. To ease the financial burden of the individual mandate, the ACA subsidizes coverage for lower-income people. The primary subsidy is a refundable tax credit called the Premium Tax Credit, first available in 2014. To claim the credit, a person must file a tax return--but not just any return. The ACA requires married individuals to file jointly. For many, this is problematic if …
