The Influence Of Custodial Grandparental Figures’ Cultural Backgrounds On Their Grandchildren’S Educational Outcomes: A Systematic Review, Gabriela B. Gonzalez Aug 2023

The Influence Of Custodial Grandparental Figures’ Cultural Backgrounds On Their Grandchildren’S Educational Outcomes: A Systematic Review, Gabriela B. Gonzalez

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Researchers have continuously explored the multiple ways in which grandparents affect their grandchildren’s environments, inside and outside of their homes. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in literature that regards custodial relationships between grandparents and grandchildren, pathways to custodial relationships and how these affect the grandparent’s methods of raising their grandchildren. Multiple researchers have analyzed educational attainment and progress of custodial grandchildren. This analysis focused on exploring existing data that considered how individuals with the mentioned custodial arrangements also possess diverse cultural backgrounds as their circumstance, and how both of these factors might affect children’s educational outcomes.

Throughout this …

Investigating The Costs And Benefits Of A Nutritional Fungal Endosymbiont, Nolan L. Perryman Jul 2023

Investigating The Costs And Benefits Of A Nutritional Fungal Endosymbiont, Nolan L. Perryman

Biology ETDs

Research on insect symbiosis is dominated by insect–bacteria models, however, the role of fungal symbionts in insects is poorly understood. Fungi are de novo synthesizers of many essential nutrients, therefore, insect–fungal pairings can permit specialization on nutritionally deprived diets. Here, I address the costs and benefits of symbiosis using a system of beetle–fungal symbiosis. Specifically, I ask 1) when reared on a low-quality diet, does the beetle increase the number of viable symbionts to compensate for a heightened nutritional demand, and 2) Is the conferred fitness benefit of the symbiont only present in low-quality diets? When reared on low-quality diets, …

Effects Of Childhood Health And Adversity On Women’S Estrous And Extended Sexuality In Romantic Relationships, Tran Dinh Jul 2023

Effects Of Childhood Health And Adversity On Women’S Estrous And Extended Sexuality In Romantic Relationships, Tran Dinh

Psychology ETDs

Variations in childhood conditions may favor different strategies of investment in pair-bonds and reproduction. The current study followed 213 romantically-involved women up to four times across the ovulatory cycle. Analyses find that childhood health and adversity moderate hormone-dependent changes in women’s sexual interests, oxytocin responses, and mate preferences. In light of proposed paternity assurance functions of extended (non-conceptive) sexuality, results suggest women with poorer, compared to better, childhood conditions prioritize bond formation but invest less in maintaining or bolstering partner investment. The estrous (conceptive) sexuality of women with poor childhood health may reflect greater investments in current reproduction, even when …

The authors aim to explain the physiological effects of surgery on nutrition …

Determining The Existence And Regulation Of Microlipophagy In Primary Brown And White Adipocytes, Sara C. Arenas De Leon Jun 2023

Determining The Existence And Regulation Of Microlipophagy In Primary Brown And White Adipocytes, Sara C. Arenas De Leon

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Lipids are one of life’s four main macromolecules and provide essential functions to cells, as they serve as building blocks of cellular membranes, mediate cell signaling, and are a critical energy source. Within cells, esterified fatty acids aggregate into lipid droplets in the form of triglycerides, consisting of a neutral lipid core surrounded by a phospholipid monolayer decorated with various proteins.

The degradation of lipid droplets and mobilization of lipids occurs through lipolysis, a process that hydrolyzes a molecule of triglyceride into a glycerol and three fatty acids. Emerging evidence demonstrates the involvement of a selective form of autophagy in …

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a therapeutic intervention that separates plasma from blood cells to remove pathological factors or to replenish deficient factors. The use of TPE is increasing over the last decades. However, despite a good theoretical rationale and biological plausibility for TPE as a therapy for numerous diseases or syndromes associated with critical illness, TPE in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting has not been studied extensively. A group of eighteen experts around the globe from different clinical backgrounds used a modified Delphi method to phrase key research questions related to "TPE in the critically ill patient". These …

Increasing Nutritional Assessment For Inpatient Adolescents: A Quality Improvement Project, Karen Abich Carracedo, Kelsey Soppet, Melissa Sanchez

Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Symposium

Eating disorders are a group of conditions characterized by severe disturbances in eating behaviors and associated with distressing emotions and thoughts. There are many subtypes with specific diagnostic thresholds. Major risk factors include female sex, age, low self-esteem, perfectionism, depression, anxiety, and genetic dysregulations. Prevalence data for American Adolescents is variable.

Currently, our institution does not have a consistent method for asking questions regarding nutrition and eating behaviors. The first step in identifying suspicious behaviors that could clue a provider into disordered eating is to ask questions regarding nutrition and eating behaviors in a standardized assessment.

For this quality improvement …

One Size Does Not Fit All: Increasing Access To Specialized Growth Curves For Pediatric Populations, Mikayla Pulliam, Kelsey Soppet, Crystal C. Avila-Schroder, Justin Hessinger, Jennifer Garcia

Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Symposium

Background/gap

Assessing the growth pattern of pediatric patients using standardized growth curves is the gold standard for monitoring nutritional status of children. The CDC and WHO growth curves are reference tools available in the Cerner EMR system currently used at UNMH. These tools are used to plot the height, weight and head circumference of children to ensure appropriate growth throughout development.

There are pediatric populations in which the CDC or WHO standardized growth curves may not be ideal. Some pediatric conditions present with unique growth patterns and require assessment of growth on both standardized and specialized charts. We have identified …

Ecological Impacts Of Invasive Crayfish In A Naïve Riparian System, Gregor L. Hamilton Apr 2023

Ecological Impacts Of Invasive Crayfish In A Naïve Riparian System, Gregor L. Hamilton

Biology ETDs

Aquatic and riparian food webs are inextricably linked. In deserts, they provide critical energy subsidies to surrounding terrestrial food webs, but these vital subsidies are not guaranteed; streams in arid lands are especially sensitive to perturbations. In this dissertation, I investigated the role of an oft-cited threat to stream communities in the lower Colorado River basin: non-native crayfish. I contributed to methodologies in passive integrated transponder use and length-weight relationships in crayfish to aid future research. I leveraged stable isotope analysis of δ15N, δ13C, and δ2H to understand crayfish role in the food webs. …
