Model Of Dietary Fiber Utilization By Small Mammalian Herbivores, With Empirical Results For Neotoma, Felisa A. Smith, Keith E. Justice
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Allometric considerations have suggested that small herbivores are inefficient at or incapable of extracting energy from the microbial fermentation of structural carbohydrates. This notion is at odds with accumulating empirical evidence that demonstrates well-developed fiber digestion abilities for a number of small rodent genera. To examine the apparent inconsistency, we have constructed a model of plant fiber utilization tailored specifically for hindgut fermenters. Computer simulations provide estimates of fiber and overall dry-matter digestibilities as a function of body size, energy demand, and diet. Our calculations indicate that small mammals can obtain significant benefit from fiber fermentation, especially at moderate fiber …

Type II Diabetes is the most prevalent disease among Zunis. Serious related complications are seen frequently in the Zuni population. In 1983, personnel at the Zuni Service Unit initiated a community-based exercise program designed to help control Type II diabetes. The effects of this program were studied, beginning in 1987, by comparison of medical records between participants and non-participants. This study demonstrated that participation in this type of a program can facilitate weight loss and decreased the need for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents. Two new related studies offer strong evidence that physical activity may actually help prevent Type II …
