Funding The Costs Of Disease Outbreaks Caused By Non Vaccination, Robert L. Schwartz
Funding The Costs Of Disease Outbreaks Caused By Non Vaccination, Robert L. Schwartz
Faculty Scholarship
While vaccination rates in the United States are high – generally over 90 percent – rates of exemptions have been going up, and preventable diseases coming back. 2014 is shaping to be one of the worst years for measles since 1994, with outbreaks generally starting from unvaccinated individuals and affecting primarily the unvaccinated. While pertussis is a more complex story, communities with high rates of exemptions are more vulnerable to outbreaks. Aside from their human cost and the financial cost of treatment imposed on those who become ill, outbreaks impose financial costs on an already burdened public health system, diverting …
You Gotta Fight For The Right To Vote: Enfranchising Native American Voters, Jeanette Wolfley
You Gotta Fight For The Right To Vote: Enfranchising Native American Voters, Jeanette Wolfley
Faculty Scholarship
Five decades ago, the Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Since its passage, the Voting Right Act has created the opportunity to vote for many racial and language minorities across the country, and has survived many challenges until 2013. The U.S. Supreme Court issued two decisions involving voting rights in its 2012-2013 term. On June 25, 2013, in Shelby County v. Holder, a divided Supreme Court struck down Section 4 - a key provision of the 1965 Voting Right Act (VRA) - as unconstitutional. On June 17, 2013, one week before the Shelby County decision, the Court decided …

Assessment Of Nutritional Status In Pregnant Women On Opioid Maintenance Therapy, Shikhar Shrestha
Assessment Of Nutritional Status In Pregnant Women On Opioid Maintenance Therapy, Shikhar Shrestha
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
Objectives: Patients who use substances or those who are on opioid maintenance therapy could be at risk of inadequate nutrition. These inadequacies could translate to adverse outcomes during pregnancy. The objective of this study was to determine differences in dietary macro and micronutrient intake in pregnant women on OMT compared to healthy controls. Methods: Participants from a parent prospective cohort study ENRICH' were classified into two groups: OMT users and healthy controls. Inclusion into the nutritional analysis was based on eligibility criteria of completion of food frequency questionnaire administered during hospital stay after delivery, absence of heavy drinking and adequate …
Bridging The Gap: Adapting Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction For Latino Populations, J. Alexis Ortiz
Bridging The Gap: Adapting Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction For Latino Populations, J. Alexis Ortiz
Psychology ETDs
Latinos comprise a sizeable and growing population in the U.S. that experiences unmet health needs and health inequities, and could benefit from increased participation in health-promoting interventions, including Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR). This study examined an adapted version of MBSR (MBSR-A) designed to increase the retention and effectiveness of this intervention for Latino populations. Thirty Latino individuals, primarily from the South Valley community of Albuquerque, enrolled in the course. The retention rate in the current study was 86% compared to the 60-66% retention attained in previous MBSR studies with Latinos. Analyses revealed pre to post improvements in a variety of …
Distortion And Revolution In Texas U.S. Congressional Redistricting Politics: 1972-2014, Willard B. Hunter
Distortion And Revolution In Texas U.S. Congressional Redistricting Politics: 1972-2014, Willard B. Hunter
Geography ETDs
Over 42 years and 22 US congressional elections between 1972 and 2014, Texas evolved from a state controlled by the Democratic Party since Reconstruction to one dominated by the Republican Party. This thesis examines the relationship between measures of district compactness and changing demographics (decreasing non-Hispanic White percentage and increasing Hispanic percentage) on a measure of electoral bias, as measured by a metric called distortion during this transition. Distortion is the difference between the percentage of seats won by a party with the percentage of votes it received in a statewide congressional election. Using a general linear regression model, the …
Reciprocal Relationships And Creative Expression In Literacy Learning: Ameliorating Disability Circumstances And Empowering Individuals, Laurel Ann Lane
Reciprocal Relationships And Creative Expression In Literacy Learning: Ameliorating Disability Circumstances And Empowering Individuals, Laurel Ann Lane
Special Education ETDs
Individuals engaged in the production of art, who are untrained, and marginalized by disability, are known as outsider or visionary artists. With them in mind I sought to better understand the relationship between art-making and meaning-making. Students with disability attributes in my classroom were motivated by arts-based activities, prompting me to include art in the content I taught. My own art-making grew out of those efforts, and in order to better understand how to implement my classroom practices, I began an autoethnographic study that evolved into phenomenology, positioning myself in the disability culture first, and then conducting an archival document …
Development Of Soft-Matter Delivery Systems: Coupling Ph Responsive Polymers To Porous Silica Particles, Andrew Gomez
Development Of Soft-Matter Delivery Systems: Coupling Ph Responsive Polymers To Porous Silica Particles, Andrew Gomez
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
This work investigates polymeric coating of evaporated induced self-assembly (EISA) mesoprous silica nanoparticles for potential use in controlled drug release and therapeutics. As demonstrated here, lipid bilayer coatings can be easily replaced with different polymer analogs allowing for dynamic response to environmental stimuli. In addition to coupling commercially available diblock polymers we synthesized and characterized a unique dual hydrophilic pH responsive diblock copolymer, PEO-PAA. This hybrid polymeric-nanoparticle system drastically improves targeting and release capabilities through the modular ability to couple multiple different polymers. Furthermore, this work is supported by an improved method to form and study giant polymer vesicles (pGVs)
Policy-Based Information Sharing Using Software-Defined Networking In Cloud Systems, Viswanath Nandina
Policy-Based Information Sharing Using Software-Defined Networking In Cloud Systems, Viswanath Nandina
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Cloud Computing is rapidly becoming a ubiquitous technology. It enables an escalation in computing capacity, storage and performance without the need to invest in new infrastructure and the maintenance expenses that follow. Security is among the major concerns of organizations that are still reluctant to adopt this technology: The cloud is dynamic, and with so many different parameters involved, it is a diffi cult task to regulate it. With an approach that blends Usage Management and Statistical Learning, this research yielded a novel approach to mitigate some of the issues arising due to questionable security, and to regulate performance (utilization …

La Ausencia De Lo Afro En La Identidad Nacional De México: Raza Y Los Mecanismos De La Invisibilización De Los Afrodescendientes En La Historia, La Cultura Popular, Y La Literatura Mexicana, Dora Careaga-Coleman
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
Recognizing the dire need for foundational texts in the burgeoning field of Afro-Mexican Studies, this dissertation illuminates transhistorical social, political, and cultural processes that led to the marginalization (invisibilization) of the African presence in Mexico. The project begins with an examination of the complementary relationship between hierarchy, integration, and 'blanquiamento' in the construction of Mexican national identity during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and concludes with a discussion of Afromexicanos in popular culture from the golden age of Mexican cinema to the present. Chapter One demonstrates how from its implementation in the eighteenth century until its abolition by Jose Morelos …
