Simulation Of Strongly Injection-Locked Semiconductor Ring Lasers, Fei-Hung Chu Feb 2016

Simulation Of Strongly Injection-Locked Semiconductor Ring Lasers, Fei-Hung Chu

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

To overcome the limited modulation bandwidth of directly modulated semiconductors, a novel scheme for modulation bandwidth enhancement and tailoring is presented. This scheme involves a single-frequency master laser monolithically integrated with strongly injection-locked whistle-geometry semiconductor ring lasers. Improved high-speed performance of the novel scheme is confirmed through numerical modeling, showing greatly enhanced resonance frequency of up to ~160 GHz. Approaches to further improve the modulation response of strongly injection-locked ring lasers, including cascaded injection-locking and Q-modulated injection-locking are also presented.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Lanthanide Fluorides For Forensic Neutron Detection, Antonio Rivera Feb 2016

Synthesis And Characterization Of Lanthanide Fluorides For Forensic Neutron Detection, Antonio Rivera

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Lanthanide fluorides have many uses, and there is a need for high quality nanocrystals to fill this need. Here, the synthesis and characterization of high quality lanthanide fluorides is presented. In particular, this dissertation focuses on dysprosium fluoride doped with ytterbium, to eventually be used as a forensic and clandestine neutron detector material. There is a need for neutron detectors that have no sensitivity to any other type of radiation and can be used as a forensic tool to go back and look at an event. There is the further requirement that such detectors be hard to detect by those …

Games For Learning: Which Template Generates Social Construction Of Knowledge, Francisco A. Garcia

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this study was to discover how three person teams use game templates (trivia, role-play, or scavenger hunt) to socially construct knowledge. The researcher designed an experimental Internet-based database to facilitate teams creating each game. Teams consisted of teachers, students, hobbyist, and business owners who shared similar interests and goals of creating knowledge to share with others. Four main questions guided the research. The first question and its sub questions seek a quantifiable measure of how social construction of knowledge occurs during the game creation process. The Interaction Analysis Model (IAM) (Gunawardena et al., 1997) was used to …

Bibliometrics And Social Network Analysis Of Doctoral Research: Research Trends In Distance Learning, Jason Skinner Feb 2016

Bibliometrics And Social Network Analysis Of Doctoral Research: Research Trends In Distance Learning, Jason Skinner

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

The study investigated research topics of doctoral dissertations that examined issues in distance learning from 2000-2014. Twelve reviews of research on distance learning, spanning from 1997-2015, were identified. It was found that only one of these reviews of research (Davies, Howell, & Petri, 2010) looked at doctoral dissertations. The authors noted that investigating dissertations was complicated and daunting because 1) only a fraction made full text available and 2) there were a large number of dissertations in the area. To counter for these complications the current study utilized bibliometric and social network analysis to investigate dissertation database listings, including abstracts, …

A New Kind Of Therapeutic Relationship: Exploring Factors That Influence The Effectiveness Of Computer-Delivered Interventions For Alcohol Use Disorders, William P. Campbell Iv

Psychology ETDs

Computer-delivered interventions (CDI) for alcohol use comprise a relatively new treatment for individuals struggling with problematic drinking. While CDIs for alcohol misuse have proliferated over the last decade, much remains unknown about factors that influence their effectiveness. This study evaluated the performance of Overcoming Addictions (OA), a CDI based on the principles of SMART Recovery (SR). Subjects were drawn from a sample of 189 participants enrolled in a randomized clinical trial (RCT) that compared three and six-month outcomes for two interventions for problematic alcohol use: control participants were enrolled in SR meetings (face to face and/or online); experimental participants also …

Rewriting Native Imperial History In New Spain: The Texcocan Dynasty, Alena Johnson Feb 2016

Rewriting Native Imperial History In New Spain: The Texcocan Dynasty, Alena Johnson

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The pre-Hispanic capital of the Acolhua kingdom was the sovereign city-state of Texcoco in the northeastern region of central Mexico. Texcoco along with Tlacopan and México-Tenochtitlan later comprised the Aztec Triple Alliance or Aztec Empire (formed c. 1429-1431). As explained in the introductory Chapter 1, throughout sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century New Spain, Spanish authorities and the Nahua aristocracy recorded many versions of native imperial history using a range of official discourse and other media. This dissertation explores only a selection of the diversity of genres and texts elaborated under the new colonial order that pertain to the dynastic history of …

Development Of A Group Dynamic Functional Connectivity Pipeline For Magnetoencephalography Data And Its Application To The Human Face Processing Network, Per Lysne Feb 2016

Development Of A Group Dynamic Functional Connectivity Pipeline For Magnetoencephalography Data And Its Application To The Human Face Processing Network, Per Lysne

Psychology ETDs

Since its inception, functional neuroimaging has focused on identifying sources of neural activity. Recently, interest has turned to the analysis of connectivity between neural sources in dynamic brain networks. This new interest calls for the development of appropriate investigative techniques. A problem occurs in connectivity studies when the differing networks of individually analyzed subjects must be reconciled. One solution, the estimation of group models, has become common in fMRI, but is largely untried with electromagnetic data. Additionally, the assumption of stationarity has crept into the field, precluding the analysis of dynamic systems. Group extensions are applied to the sparse irMxNE …

Human Trafficking Victims Are Everywhere And Nowhere: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of The United States Anti-Human Trafficking Campaign, 2000-2012., Billy James Ulibarri Feb 2016

Human Trafficking Victims Are Everywhere And Nowhere: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of The United States Anti-Human Trafficking Campaign, 2000-2012., Billy James Ulibarri

Sociology ETDs

This dissertation explores the oppositional framing techniques used by actors in the United States anti-human trafficking (AHT) campaign. Theoretically based in symbolic interactionism, I conduct a frame analysis of 12 years of newspaper articles (2000-2012), which comprises the official discourse of the AHT campaign in the United States. I unpack three frame disputes, where claims are challenged and the challenges are rebutted in three primary disputes: 1) the characteristics and experiences of human trafficking victims, 2) the credibility of quantitative estimates of the prevalence of human trafficking, and 3) the justification for the development of new AHT policy tools. Using …

Civil Engineering ETDs

Biofilms grown on free-floating attachment surfaces, as in integrated fixed film activated sludg (IFAS) and moving bed bioreactors (MBBRs) are commonly used in wastewater treatment, but little is known about how media geometry affects the biofilms and process performance. The objective of this study was to compare nitrification and growth of biofilms grown on different length media in bench-scale MBBRs. The carriers were cut from high density polyethylene tubing with one media type one-third the length of the other, but with inner and outer diameter dimensions identical. Each bioreactor was continuously operated with coarse bubble aeration and provided with a …

Relativistic Backyard Wave Oscillator With A Gaussian Radiation Pattern Related Technologies, Ahmed Elfrgani Feb 2016

Relativistic Backyard Wave Oscillator With A Gaussian Radiation Pattern Related Technologies, Ahmed Elfrgani

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Short pulse high power microwave (HPM) devices with Gaussian radiation pattern are attractive for many applications. The importance of the Gaussian microwave beam is that its maximum energy density is concentrated on axis. The purpose of this study is to use a backward wave oscillator (BWO), which is typically known to radiate in the TM01 mode, to produce an HPM Gaussian wave beam. A BWO generates an electromagnetic wave with negative group velocity where the wave is traveling in the direction opposite to the electron beam. Thus, to extract the microwave signal axially, a cavity resonator reflector or cutoff waveguide …

Using Student Feedback To Enhance Teacher Evaluation, Douglas Wine

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Teacher evaluation literature presents a history that reflects the increasing need to account for the role of the teacher in the classroom. Extensive research has identified a series of best teaching practices but not a means to know in what context they work best, nor why they do not work for some students. Recently, student surveys provide a snapshot into teacher practices as well. This study held student conversations with underachieving and high achieving students to seek answers to the following two questions: What perspectives can students provide about what influences their achievement in the classroom? How do students perceptions …

Theory, Fabrication, And Experimentation Of Phononic Crystals In Mems At Micro/Nano Scale: Engineering Of Thermal And Rf Phonons To Applications In Thermoelectrics And Microresonators, Seyedhamidreza Alaie

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Phononic Crystals (PnCs) are novel materials comprised of a periodic structure of inclusions in a matrix. This periodic arrangement creates phononic bandgaps, and modifies phononic bandstructures of a material. Such a property offers promising applications at the micro and nano scales to engineer acoustic filters, high Q-factor resonators, and thermoelectric properties of materials. Studying PnCs at the micro/nano scale requires specific characterization techniques, which rely on Micro Electro Mechanical Structures (MEMS). This work focuses on the study, and characterization of PnCs using MEMS in view of their prospective applications in thermoelectric materials, microresonators and acoustic filters, and also the prospective …

Shifting Dreams: Intersections Of The Rhetorical Imagination Of U.S. Immigration Policy And The Writing Practices Of Dreamers, Genevieve Garcia De Mueller Feb 2016

Shifting Dreams: Intersections Of The Rhetorical Imagination Of U.S. Immigration Policy And The Writing Practices Of Dreamers, Genevieve Garcia De Mueller

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation examines the intersections between the rhetoric of the DREAM Act and the discourse of the migrant activists, specifically DREAMers, affected by the Acts language. Through a hermeneutic approach combining a rhetorical, genre, and critical discourse analysis, I examine how the DREAMers respond to marginalizing textual features of the Act. DREAMers appropriate genres and rhetorical moves of the dominant discourse to combat four problem features of the DREAM Act, namely the criminalizing nature, the erasure of the affected subjects (migrants), the taking away of agency from the affected subjects (migrants), and the propagation of xenophobic racism. Often fraught with …

Siete Lenguas: The Rhetorical History Of Dolores Huerta And The Rise Of Chicana Rhetoric, Christine Beagle Feb 2016

Siete Lenguas: The Rhetorical History Of Dolores Huerta And The Rise Of Chicana Rhetoric, Christine Beagle

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation is first an historical trajectory of Chicana Rhetoric in the American polis and then a perspectival analysis of three key texts from Chicana labor rights activist and vice president of the United Farm Workers Union Dolores Huerta. The trajectory establishes an efficacious legacy of Chicana Rhetoric and the analyses of Huerta's rhetoric explore what Chicana Rhetoric is and is not through the lens of media, scholarly, and personal rendition. I argue throughout that Chicana Rhetoric is representative of current intersections in social, political, racial, and gender rhetorics and Dolores Huerta is the embodiment of these intersections. The implications …

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study contributes to the empirical research on the use of literary texts in language learning. Specifically, it focuses on two groups of adult English language learners who are students at an American university as they read, write about, and discuss literature written by an author from the local area and which portrays the local culture in which the university is situated. This study seeks to examine how adopting an aesthetic stance can help foreign students, new to the university, evoke a wide range of responses and pay attention to language input and cultural context.

Complicating Transgender: White Privilege And The Politics Of Rurality, Jordon Johnson Feb 2016

Complicating Transgender: White Privilege And The Politics Of Rurality, Jordon Johnson

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation argues a dominant transgender narrative manifested through a focus on transgender bodies and prioritizing access to medical procedures when personal stories began to be publicly shared. With limited public conversations about the influence of a dominant transgender narrative, public understandings about the community have become isolated to one facet of some peoples lived experiences. Focusing on the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico, I examine the ways in which white privilege and presumptions about rural life as in certain respects antithetical to a transgender community have shaped the predominant representation of transgender in ways that often obscure the …

Analysis, Implementation And Considerations For Liquid Crystals As A Reconfigurable Antennas Solution (Licras) For Space, Derek Doyle

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The space industry has predominantly relied on high gain reflector dish antenna apertures for performing communications, but is constantly investing in phase array antenna concepts to provide increased signal flexibility at reduced system costs in terms of finances and system resources. The problem with traditional phased arrays remains the significantly greater program cost and complexity added to the satellite by integrating arrays of antenna elements with dedicated amplifier and phase shifters to perform adaptive beam forming. Liquid Crystal Reflectarrays (LiCRas) offer some of the electrical beam forming capability of a phased array system with the component and design complexity in …
