Understanding And Modifying Health Behaviors, Kristina N. Piorkowski
Understanding And Modifying Health Behaviors, Kristina N. Piorkowski
Economics ETDs
This dissertation explores two drivers behind the spread of non-communicable diseases – sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and youth tobacco use – in order to improve policies tailored to mitigate these behaviors. Chapter 2 uses primary survey data to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) for a tax on sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) in New Mexico. Traditional contingent valuation regression methods were reformulated as a three-equation system. Results indicate that respondents who have healthier eating habits have statistically significantly higher preferences for SSB taxes. The estimated individual median WTP 95% confidence interval was 0.002-0.961 pennies-per-ounce. Chapter 3 continues the exploration into SSB …
Mining Temporal Activity Patterns On Social Media, Nikan Chavoshi
Mining Temporal Activity Patterns On Social Media, Nikan Chavoshi
Computer Science ETDs
Social media provide communication networks for their users to easily create and share content. Automated accounts, called bots, abuse these platforms by engaging in suspicious and/or illegal activities. Bots push spam content and participate in sponsored activities to expand their audience. The prevalence of bot accounts in social media can harm the usability of these platforms, and decrease the level of trustworthiness in them. The main goal of this dissertation is to show that temporal analysis facilitates detecting bots in social media. I introduce new bot detection techniques which exploit temporal information. Since automated accounts are controlled by computer programs, …

Sonomechanical Enhanced Sparging Techniques For Advanced Reactor Applications, Floren V. Rubio
Sonomechanical Enhanced Sparging Techniques For Advanced Reactor Applications, Floren V. Rubio
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
The fluoride salt cooled high temperature reactor (FHR) is a Generation IV advanced reactor design that has potential to produce efficient, low carbon, and safe energy. But, there are significant engineering challenges that need to be addressed before the deployment of this reactor. One of the key challenges is tritium release mitigation and sequestration. Because the FHR utilizes a eutectic LiF-BeF2 (flibe) salt as a coolant, the coolant is a significant source of tritium.
High-power ultrasonics have been used in many industrial process streams such as food processing, metal production, chemical production, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Techniques and concepts from these …
Regulations Of Pathogenic Cd4+ T Helper Lymphocytes In Inflammatory Diseases, Handong Zheng
Regulations Of Pathogenic Cd4+ T Helper Lymphocytes In Inflammatory Diseases, Handong Zheng
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
In this comprehensive project, three interrelated studies with distinct foci were employed to understand the regulations of specific CD4+ T helper cell population in inflammatory diseases.
Pathogenic TH17 cells play an essential role in the initiation and development of both human multiple sclerosis (MS) and animal experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism by which the pathogenicity of TH17 cells is controlled in the autoimmune neuro-inflammation remains unclear. In aim 1, we revealed that lumican (Lum), an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein, negatively regulates encephalitic TH17 cell responses. Our findings highlighted a TH17 cell-intrinsic effect of Lum in suppressing …
Neutrino Flavor Conversions In Dense Media, Lei Ma
Neutrino Flavor Conversions In Dense Media, Lei Ma
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Neutrinos are abundantly produced in astrophysical environments such as core-collapse supernovae and binary neutron star mergers. Neutrino flavor conversions in the dense media play important roles in the physical and chemical evolutions of the environments. In this dissertation, I study two mechanisms through which neutrinos may change their flavors.
In the first mechanism, neutrinos can experience flavor conversions through interactions with oscillatory perturbations in matter distributions. I show that this mechanism can be understood intuitively as Rabi oscillations. I also derive criteria which can be used to determine whether such parametric resonances exist in a given environment.
In the second …
Plurality Through Film: Subjectivity In Yoko Tawada's Das Nackte Auge, Anna M. Adams
Plurality Through Film: Subjectivity In Yoko Tawada's Das Nackte Auge, Anna M. Adams
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis undertakes an examination of the subject formation of the nameless protagonist and first-person narrator of Yoko Tawada’s novel, Das nackte Auge. Situated and framed by poststructuralist theorists such as Judith Butler and Michel Foucault, this thesis argues that the protagonist’s plurality of subject positions is established through her encounters with film, particularly in relation to the French actress Catherine Deneuve, in a process that reveals the overlapping networks of social, historical, and political structures that intersect to express her subjectivity as formed under systemic racism and sexism. Tawada’s novel provides an opportunity to examine how the protagonist …

Cheers! Ending Quill . . . What Can Be Learned From The Wine Industry, Alyson Outenreath
Cheers! Ending Quill . . . What Can Be Learned From The Wine Industry, Alyson Outenreath
New Mexico Law Review
In today’s age of technology, does it really matter where we are physically present? For example, a person in rural Montana can buy items online, just as if that person were in a brick-and-mortar store in New York City or San Francisco. An Internet business having employees and offices only in Chicago could sell products to customers located in all 50 states. If physical presence has become a bygone of the past, then why still talk about it? The answer is the 1992 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Quill Corp. v. North Dakota. Quill involved whether an out-of-state office supply …

Of Remand And Responsibility: Oakey V. May Maple Pharmacy And The Pharmacist’S Professional Standard Of Care In New Mexico, Paul Michael Roybal
New Mexico Law Review
Reports of the United States’ prescription drug overdose epidemic abound in news media. In an effort to curb this epidemic, several entities have been subject to lawsuits, including pharmaceutical manufacturers and doctors. However, pharmacists remain protected in the majority of jurisdictions by a restricted professional standard of care. The pharmacist’s professional standard of care in New Mexico was a question of first impression when it reached the Court of Appeals in Oakey v. May Maple Pharmacy, but the case was remanded back to the district court so that each party’s expert could further develop a standard. Thus, the question is …

Penning Her Way To Power: Feminism And Writing In Saudi Women’S Efl Classrooms, Dania Ammar
Penning Her Way To Power: Feminism And Writing In Saudi Women’S Efl Classrooms, Dania Ammar
Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
In this literature review, I highlight the need for investing in the second-language (L2) writing classroom as a platform for critical literacy. Namely, I hone in on the context of L2 women writers in Saudi Arabia. As I argue for a feminist pedagogy for teaching L2 writing in this context, I emphasize writing as a tool of “languaging,” define feminism, and explain its significance in relation to education, women rights, and waves of social change in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, situating this paper in the field composition, I survey the development of concepts relevant to empowerment through writing in feminist first-language …
Understanding Intersectionality To Promote Social Justice In Educational Leadership: Review Of Jcel Cases, Ericka Roland
Understanding Intersectionality To Promote Social Justice In Educational Leadership: Review Of Jcel Cases, Ericka Roland
Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
This qualitative study examined how intersectionality is treated in the Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership’s (JCEL) 2016 special issue. Guided by intersectionality and intersectional pedagogy framework, a qualitative content analysis (QCA) was conducted on all parts of six pedagogical cases. There were three major findings: (1) an additive approach was taken, (2) there was an unclear connection between theory and practice, and (3) there was minimal attention given to the role of agency in social justice leadership. Pedagogical cases rooted in the theoretical framework of intersectionality prompts social justice leadership that uncovers structural and systemic power relations to enact …

The Territorial Politics Of The New York Botanical Garden, 1891-1912, Carolyn Mcsherry
The Territorial Politics Of The New York Botanical Garden, 1891-1912, Carolyn Mcsherry
American Studies ETDs
In 1891 fifty-four of New York’s wealthiest speculators came together to incorporate a new botanical garden for their city. This dissertation examines the political work of the New York Botanical Garden during its founding decades to extend the expansionist capacity of botanical science, while addressing political problems endemic in New York. The Garden served as a vehicle for transcribing landscape meaning steeped in European traditions of colonialism, into a new American context defined by plebiscitary rhetoric, territorial dispossession and instability of tenure in land, social rifts and oppressions. It tells the story of how a landed elite in New York …
"It Was Information Based": Student Reasoning When Distinguishing Between Scholarly And Popular Sources, Amy Jankowski, Alyssa Russo, Lori Townsend
"It Was Information Based": Student Reasoning When Distinguishing Between Scholarly And Popular Sources, Amy Jankowski, Alyssa Russo, Lori Townsend
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Scholarly and popular sources are a longstanding construct in library instruction. A quick Google search brings up an abundance of LibGuides and tutorials on the subject. However, we have found that teaching students to identify and classify information sources using a rigid binary categorization is problematic. In an effort to better understand the ways students conceptualize and evaluate sources, we stepped back to ask: what kind of reasoning do students apply when distinguishing between scholarly and popular sources?
A Church’S Approach To Intercultural Communication Encounters In Short-Term Missions, Carolotta Anweiler
A Church’S Approach To Intercultural Communication Encounters In Short-Term Missions, Carolotta Anweiler
Communication ETDs
The prevalence of short-term mission trips by churches and/or faith-based organizations has increased tremendously (Howell & Door, 2007, Anaheier & Themudo, 2005). However, no research has been completed on the training offered to in preparation for these types of trips, specifically, training for intercultural trips. I joined a church on their short-term mission experience to examine as a participant observer how they were trained to interact with people of another cultural group and then, how the training affected the interactions on the trip.
Through the use of Grounded Theory, I examined the discourse used in the trainings offered and throughout …
Negotiating Culture In Africa: A Critical Analysis Of Organizational Discourse In Ghana, Eric Karikari
Negotiating Culture In Africa: A Critical Analysis Of Organizational Discourse In Ghana, Eric Karikari
Communication ETDs
Organizational culture is a concept that is theoretically contested, particularly within critical approaches to communication. However, it is a highly crucial area of research which has symbolic and material implications for individuals, organizations and communities. This study contributes to the conversation about how organizational culture is constituted by interrogating the forces at play in this constitution. One of such forces is neoliberalism, which operates by subsuming all organizational practices under the umbrella of market value. The study takes a cultural materialist approach to organizational culture through the analysis of discourse at the National Communications Authority (NCA) in Ghana.
The NCA …

How Brief Motivational Interventions Impact Math Beliefs In Undergraduate University Students, Ayesha Lynn Livingston Phd
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
Despite best efforts, students in U.S. schools still underperform in mathematics compared to many other developed countries, and the achievement gap persists. Teachers play a most important role in student success, yet the knowledge about adult beliefs (and how they can be changed) concerning one’s ability to learn math, the value one has for math, and one’s understanding about how math anxiety derails learning still falls short in informing efforts to best train/support pre-service or in-service teachers. A group of undergraduate university students (N=123) participated in a fully online intervention measuring each of the components in the Expectancy-Value-Cost (EVC) motivational …

Detection Of Salen-Type Tracers For Subterranean Fluid Flow Monitoring Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Jenny C. Sanchez
Detection Of Salen-Type Tracers For Subterranean Fluid Flow Monitoring Using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Jenny C. Sanchez
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
A series of hydrocarbon and aqueous soluble salen-type ligands have been synthesized and characterized by electronic and vibrational spectroscopy. Aqueous soluble salen-type ligands were complexed to a metal and investigated as potential underground fluid flow tracers using Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) as the analytical technique. Vibrational spectra obtained from SERS was shown to have enhanced the spectral signal for these complexes in low concentrations though did not show significant differences between the free ligands and their metal complexes. This research has shown that, with some structural modifications, salen-type ligands can be effective candidates as subterranean fluid flow tracers when SERS …

High-Throughput Automated Multi-Target Super-Resolution Imaging, Farzin Farzam
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Super-resolution microscopy techniques developed through the past few decades enable us to surpass the classical diffraction limit of light, and thus open new doors to investigate the formerly inaccessible world of nanometer-sized objects. Most importantly, by using super-resolution microscopy, one can visualize sub-cellular structures in the range of 10 to 200 nm. At this range, we can investigate exciting problems in biology and medicine by visualizing protein-protein interactions and spatiotemporal analysis of structures of interest on the surface or inside cells. These techniques (collectively known as nanoscopy) have a high impact on understanding and solving biological questions. This dissertation starts …
