This thesis is an interrogation of the Anglo Southwest as a problematic and persistent regional and national construct. I propose that the Anglo Southwest emerged at a pivotal moment in the late nineteenth century during which Americanist approaches to geography, anthropology, and the arts, were being shaped to define the region and determine the production and distribution of knowledge. This resulted in an Anglo view of the Southwest as uninhabited, silent, and imaginary, which omitted the actuality of silencing Native voices, cultural appropriation, and the taking of resources and land. Students in schools who speak multiple languages need opportunities for multimodal learning. A study was conducted to observe how middle level English Learners used multimodal (text, audio, video, imagery) resources in a Language Arts - Social Studies class. The research question was: What patterns of engagement with content, and each other, were manifest by middle level ELs while using multimodal resources in a general education history class? Qualitative case study was used to observe student work and interaction, inspect work artifacts, and interview for opinions and motivations. SNAP-Ed NM works to provide nutrition and physical activity education, environmental and systems changes, and social marketing among primarily SNAP-eligible populations to empower them to make healthy food choices and become more physically active. In May 2025, the SNAP-Ed evaluation team from the UNM Prevention Research Center (PRC) conducted a survey involving five implementing agencies and the state agency overseeing SNAP-Ed. The purpose of this survey was to evaluate engagement with Tribal communities and to assess any changes in engagement since the prior assessment in FY2023.
