Geology Of The Mcrae Canyon Area Sierra County, New Mexico, Hugh P. Bushnell May 1953

Geology Of The Mcrae Canyon Area Sierra County, New Mexico, Hugh P. Bushnell

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Sedimentary Rocks exposed at the surface in the low area between the north-trending Caballo and Fra Cristobal Mountains of south-central New Mexico include the late Cretaceous Mesaverde formation, the late Cretaceous and early Tertiary McRae formation, and the Miocene-Pliocene Santa Fe formation. A thin veneer of Jordana pediment gravel covers the older rocks on the eastern edge of the area.

An Azimuth-Stabililzed Balloon Platform, Alfred H. Spano Apr 1953

An Azimuth-Stabililzed Balloon Platform, Alfred H. Spano

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In the study of Zodiacal Light, an interesting task is the determination of the intensity and the position of this glow on the celestial sphere. The problem of photographing this phenomenon from the earth’s surface has been hampered generally by the inevitable presence of the atmosphere between the camera and the object. However, it is expected that at the height of some thirty kilometers above the earth, the atmospheric haze will be reduced enough so that pictures of the zodiacal region may be obtained without significant absorption. To accomplish this, it is necessary to keep the balloon-borne camera pointed in …

Paleontology And Stratigraphy Of The Carboniferous Rocks Of The Placitas Region, Northern Sandia Mountains, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Donald Francis Toomey Mar 1953

Paleontology And Stratigraphy Of The Carboniferous Rocks Of The Placitas Region, Northern Sandia Mountains, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Donald Francis Toomey

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

A paleontologic and lithologic study of the Carboniferous rocks of the northern Sandia Mountains demonstrates that this predominantly marine sequence is divisible into several important series which are recognizable elsewhere.

The pre-Pennsylvanian rocks lack diagnostic fossils. However, correlation with a fossiliferous sequence in the southern Nacimiento Mountains, based on similar lithology and stratigraphic position, indicates a middle mississippian Meramec age for these rocks. The thickness ranges from 21 to 81 feet; they consist mainly of limestone associated with basal elastics. This sequence lies directly on Pre-Cambrian rocks. Nine sections have been measured and are shown geographically on three plates.

A Study Of The Kinetics And The Free Radicals Involved In The Low-Pressure, Vapor-Phase Pyrolysis Of Toluene, Robert E. Williams

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The separation of lanthanum, yttrium, and the rare earth elements from their ores has been a challenge to the chemist for many years. The similarities in chemical properties has made their separation a problem of extraordinary difficulty. Fractional crystallization has been the classical method utilized in the past, although individual elements have been isolated by oxidization or reduction to other than the tripositive oxidation state (1). Recently ion exchange and solvent extraction methods have become more important as a means of separation of these elements. Both of these techniques depend upon fractional differences in the distribution of compounds or ions …

The Separation Of Antimony 125 From Solutions Of Neutron Irradiated Tin Salts, Joseph D. Robinson Aug 1952

The Separation Of Antimony 125 From Solutions Of Neutron Irradiated Tin Salts, Joseph D. Robinson

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Because of the importance of high specific activities of radioactive species considerable experimental work has been done on the preparation of "carrier-free" tracers. In surveying the literature on the preparation of carrier-free antimony only one method was found. The method reported involves the deuteron bombardment of tin; solution of the target in agua regia; addition of cadmium carrier; precipitation of the cadmium as the sulfide which carries antimony, using oxalate ion to complex the tin; solution to the sulfides of cadmium and antimony in concentrated hydrochloric acid; distillation of tin from cadmium and antimony contained in in perchloric acid with …

Polargraphic Measurement Of Reaction Rates Of Diazonium Salts, Gregory W. Daues Aug 1952

Polargraphic Measurement Of Reaction Rates Of Diazonium Salts, Gregory W. Daues

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

If a colorimetric method is used for following the reactions by tracing the increase in dye concentration, only reactions which form soluble dyes can be studied. Gasometric techniques are limited in that a sample must be removed from the reaction vessel and the diazonium salt decomposed by means of a catalyst in order to measure the liberated nitrogen. The latter method of analysis lends itself more readily to studies of the rate of decomposition of diazonium salts under various conditions, such as, the presence of ultra-violet light or exposure to high temperatures.
