Cosmic Ray Intensity At Balloon Altitudes, Kenneth R. Greider May 1954

Cosmic Ray Intensity At Balloon Altitudes, Kenneth R. Greider

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In the investigation of cosmic rays at balloon altitudes, it is important to recognize the various factors that affect the total intensity at any point in the atmosphere. The three main factors are: (1) Atmospheric influence: variation of intensity with atmospheric depth, (2) Geomagnetic influences: variations of intensity with the geomagnetic latitude, and (3) Extraterrestrial influences: periodic and non periodic variations of intensity.

Diffuse Reflection Of Light, Francis L. Bentsen May 1954

Diffuse Reflection Of Light, Francis L. Bentsen

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This thesis describes an attempt to determine the feasibility of measuring the ozone content in the air by absorption of light over a long path.

A Fresnel Half-Period Zone Plate For Focusing Electromagnetic Energy In The One Meter Wave-Length Region, Henry George Oltman Jr. May 1954

A Fresnel Half-Period Zone Plate For Focusing Electromagnetic Energy In The One Meter Wave-Length Region, Henry George Oltman Jr.

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Theory and past experience predict, (1) that the zone plate should form images analogous to the optical refracting lens, (2) that focal length and gain are determined by the number of zones in a given aperture, (3) and that the resolving power is a function of the aperture dimension and of the wavelength of the radiation.

Records Of Wells Drilled For Oil And Gas In New Mexico, George H. Dixon May 1954

Records Of Wells Drilled For Oil And Gas In New Mexico, George H. Dixon

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

This report contains information compiled from data in the files of the U.S. Geological Survey, the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, and oil and gas companies on nearly 3,000 of the more than 13,000 wells drills in New Mexico prior to September 1, 1953. The tabulation is believed to include all unsuccessful wildcat test wells, most of the unsuccessful field extension wells, and most of the discovery wells for the various producing areas, even though they may be shut or abandoned at the present time. In addition, the list contains some deep tests and some wells representative …

Analysis Of Zodiacal Light Recordings, Mclane Downing May 1954

Analysis Of Zodiacal Light Recordings, Mclane Downing

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The object of the zodiacal light work at Capillo Peak is to take comparable records of zodiacal light intensities over an extended period of time. In order to obtain extra-terrestrial isophotes from the original recordings, corrections for loss of light intensity in the atmosphere must be made.

Exchange Reactions Of The Transuranium Elements Section 1. Am(Iii)-Am(V)-Am(Vi), Am(Iii)-Am(V), And Am(V)-Am(Vi), Thomas K. Keenan

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

No exchange work prior to this dissertation has been reported on the americium system. Neptunium exchange is presently being studied by J. C. Hindman and co-workers at the Argonne National Laboratory, but has not been completely reported. Study of uranium exchange, which is still in an unsatisfactory state, has been limited to the U(IV)-(VI) exchange.

The Synthesis Of 10-Methyl-3, 4-Benzpyrene And 8,10-Dimethyl-3, 4-Benzpyrene, Jules Adelfang

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In 1953 Cook, Hewett, and Rieger found a highly carcinogenic hydrocarbon in coal tar. By a variety of solvent extraction methods, fractional distillation, and crystallization several pure hydrocarbons were isolated from the crude pitch. Two new pentacyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were isolated and since only small quantities of them were available it was decided to ascertain their structures by synthesis instead of degradetive experiments. The hydrocarbon samples were obtained with great difficulty from two tons of crude pitch. The problem was simplified since ten of the possible fifteen pentacyclic hydrocarbons were known. From certain similarities of these hydrocarbons to perylene its …
