Annual Report Of The University, 1956-1957, University Of New Mexico Jun 1957

Annual Report Of The University, 1956-1957, University Of New Mexico

UNM Annual Reports

TO THE GOVERNOR OF NEW MEXICO: AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY, I have the honor to submit to you, through the Regents, the report of the University of New Mexico for the academic year, 1956-57. Higher education faces a challenge today which has increasingly serious implications-that of maintaining high quality of instruction while accommodating students in unprecedented numbers. Not only is the college-age population increasing at a rapid rate; a steadily growing proportion of this age group is going to college. There is little guesswork in predicting a doubled enrollment- 12,000 or more at the University of New Mexico by …

The Chemical Behavior Of Iodine At Tracer Concentrations, Henry Morris Eiland Jun 1957

The Chemical Behavior Of Iodine At Tracer Concentrations, Henry Morris Eiland

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Radiochemistry was introduced as a separate branch of chemistry by Pierre and Marie Curie in 1898. The first radiochemical process consisted of the separation and identification of the new element Polonium from the uranium ores pitchblende and chalcalite. It is significant that this process involved an amount of material so small that it could be detected only by its intense radioactivity. In the last half-century radiochemistry has developed into a field of ever increasing diversification.

A Study Of Current Noise In Cokes, Carbons, And Graphites, Robert J. Lanter Jun 1957

A Study Of Current Noise In Cokes, Carbons, And Graphites, Robert J. Lanter

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This study shows that current noise occurs when there is a deviation of Ohm's Law, i.e., when the applied voltage and resultant current are no longer proportional. Since most, and perhaps all, cases of occurrence of frequency and current dependent noise are associated with non-linear devices, e.g., semiconductors, diodes, vacuum tubes, insulators near breakdown, it seems reasonable to seek a mechanism involving non-linearity as an important feature. Even though it may not be justifiable to seek a single mechanism to explain all of the occurrences of current noise, nevertheless, the fact that in cases studied and discussed herein …

A Cloud Chamber Study Of Penetrating Showers In Aluminum, Copper And Lead, James Francis Kenney Jun 1957

A Cloud Chamber Study Of Penetrating Showers In Aluminum, Copper And Lead, James Francis Kenney

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In recent years, much work has been done in the investigation of high-energy nuclear collisions in various materials. The purpose of these investigations is to gain a better understanding of nucleon-meson-nucleon interactions at high energies. Laboratory accelerating devices are capable at the present time of attaining energies which are still very low in comparison to the upper limit of the cosmic radiation energy spectrum. As a result, these investigations are best carried out by using the very hard component of the cosmic radition as the primary particle of the collision.

A Pulse Length Analyzer, Paul Scheie Jun 1957

A Pulse Length Analyzer, Paul Scheie

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

For experiments involving small scintillators and for experiments involving scintillator telescopes, the circuitry may closely resemble that used with geiger counters. However, if it is desired to make use of the variation in the signal amplitude in a large scintillator, some means must be found to deal with a wide range of amplitudes. The scintillator employed in the experiment to which this work relates is a tank 10 feet in diameter that contains 300 gallons of activated toluene; light of the scintillations is collected by a 16 inch photo-multiplier tube that is located on top of the tank.

A Chemical Ozone Measuring Radio Sonde, Alan W. Peterson Jun 1957

A Chemical Ozone Measuring Radio Sonde, Alan W. Peterson

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The Vertical distribution of atmospheric ozone has been determined spectroscopically either from surface observations or from balloon-borne spectrographs sent aloft. These spectrographic techniques have several disadvantages. Surface observations of the "Umkehr Effect" give only a rough distribution, four or five points for the entire atmosphere.

The Geology Of The Tecolote Hills Area, Lincoln County, New Mexico, Donald E. Rawson May 1957

The Geology Of The Tecolote Hills Area, Lincoln County, New Mexico, Donald E. Rawson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Tecolote Hills in the north-central Lincoln County, New Mexico, consist of Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous sedimentary strata intruded by early Tertiary (?) sills, dikes, and laccoliths. A partial section of the Permian Yeso formation, measured thickness 380 feet, is exposed and is overlain conformably by the Glorieta sandstone member of Permian San Andres formation. This sandstone thins, at least locally, to the south and intertongues with San Andres limestone. The maximum thickness of the Glorieta sandstone is about 215 feet. It is overlain by a 300-foot thickness of San Andres rocks, further divisible into a lower limestone member and …

A Study Of The Density And Molecular Species Of Polonium And Tellurium Vapor, Angelo L. Giorgi May 1957

A Study Of The Density And Molecular Species Of Polonium And Tellurium Vapor, Angelo L. Giorgi

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the nature of the species of polonium and tellurium in equilibrium in the vapor phase at temperatures ranging from 422 degrees to 1013 degrees C. for polonium and from 512 degrees to 880 degrees C. for tellurium. Such information was based on measurements of the variation of vapor pressure and vapor density with temperature. The results of this investigation suggest that both polonium and tellurium exist as diatomic molecules in the vapor phase over the aforementioned temperature ranges.

Studies Of The Chemistry Of Systems Involving Water, Hydrogen Peroxide And Plutonium (Iv) Nitrate In Tri-N-Butyl Phosphate, Lawrence J. Mullins Jr. May 1957

Studies Of The Chemistry Of Systems Involving Water, Hydrogen Peroxide And Plutonium (Iv) Nitrate In Tri-N-Butyl Phosphate, Lawrence J. Mullins Jr.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The reaction of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), with water and hydrogen peroxide is studied by means of distribution experiments. The solubility of water in TBP-hexane, at low TBP concentrations, is consistent with the premise that H2O•TBP is the principal solvate species formed at low hydrogen peroxide concentrations. The distribution data at high hydrogen peroxide concentrations indicate that another species such as H2O2•TBP is also present. The reaction of hydrogen peroxide with plutonium(IV) nitrate in TBP is studied by a spectrophotometric method. A complex is formed which contains one plutonium atom and two peroxy-oxygen atoms. The …

Correlation Of Reef Calcarenites Of The Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation, San Juan County, Utah, Jack Jordan May 1957

Correlation Of Reef Calcarenites Of The Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation, San Juan County, Utah, Jack Jordan

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

This thesis is a summation of lithologic analyses of three stratigraphic sections: the Danvers 1-X Harris-Federal test, the Honaker Trail locality, and the Raplee locality in San Juan Canyon, San Juan County, Utah (FIg. 1) In these localities, the Paradox Formation as defined by Wengerd and Strickland (1954, p.2169) has been studied, inasmuch as the formation is known to contain limestone bioherms ("reefs") (Wengerd, 1951) in conjunction with biostromal strata.

A Radiochemical Investigation Of Short-Lived Selenium And Bromine Fission Products, James Edward Sattizahn Jr. May 1957

A Radiochemical Investigation Of Short-Lived Selenium And Bromine Fission Products, James Edward Sattizahn Jr.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

From a sample of uranium bombarded with neutrons, Hahn and Strassmann, in 1939, separated four radioactive products which followed alkaline earth chemistry and were therefore tentatively attributed to isotope of radium. Each of these products decayed to a daughter activity which could be precipitated along with lanthanum; the daughter activities were then assumed to be isotopes of actinium. Subsequently, by accepted methods of fractional crystallization and precipitation, the "radium" and "actinium" isotopes were identified unequivocally as isotopes of barium and lanthanum, respectively. Within a relatively short time there were found more such radioactive products, which were identified as isotopes of …

Behavior Of Indium At Tracer Concentrations, Katheryn L. Lawson May 1957

Behavior Of Indium At Tracer Concentrations, Katheryn L. Lawson

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The increase in number and availability of radioisotopes that can be produced in the carrier-free state has offered practical means of investigating the chemical behavior of substances at extremely low concentrations. The working region of concentrations, which may extend to less than 10-14 molar, is generally fixed only by the half-life of the radio-element and the nature of the radiation.
