A Proposal For The Use Of The Method Of Characteristics As A Condition On The Numerical Solutions Of Two-Dimensional Lagrangian Isentropic Flow, Christian D. Anderson Jan 1961

A Proposal For The Use Of The Method Of Characteristics As A Condition On The Numerical Solutions Of Two-Dimensional Lagrangian Isentropic Flow, Christian D. Anderson

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The method of characteristics has been widely used in two- dimensional problems (i.e., one spatial dimension and time or two spatial dimensions for the steady state), and it was felt that this method, in all or part, could be applied to time-dependent, two- space hydrodynamics.

In this paper we have done the following:

1. Derived the two-dimensional, time-dependent, nonviscous Lagrangian Equations;

2. Discussed, in general, some aspects of the method of characteristics;

3. Applied the method to our Lagrangian equations; and finally,

4. Proposed a possible application of our results to the numerical solution of the Lagrangian equations.

A Numerical Treatment Of One-Dimensional Non-Steady Compressible Flows, Paul J. Kazek Nov 1960

A Numerical Treatment Of One-Dimensional Non-Steady Compressible Flows, Paul J. Kazek

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The problem that will be considered here will be the flow in a cylinder filled with a homogeneous ideal gas, bounded on one end by a vacuum and/or a rigid wall with the motion initiated by a piston on the other end. First, the basic Lagrangian differential equations will be derived along with other necessary thermodynamical relations. A scheme of difference equations will be presented and the viscosity term discussed as well as a method for insuring stability of the difference equations during the calculations

Muon Component Of Extensive Air Showers., Ryan Pierson Jr. Sep 1960

Muon Component Of Extensive Air Showers., Ryan Pierson Jr.

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to determine how the muon component of an extensive air shower varies with the energy of the incident primary particle and different values of inelasticity and multiplicity for the nuclear interactions according to a simple theory of extensive air showers suggested by Professor Roy Thomas of the University of New Mexico. The method of attacking this problem will be to calculate the number of muons resulting from decay of pions produced in each nuclear interaction of the primary particle and from this the total number of muons passing through certain levels of the earth’s …

Annual Report Of The University, 1959-1960, University Of New Mexico

UNM Annual Reports

TO THE GOVERNOR OF NEW MEXICO: AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY, I have the honor to submit to you, through the Regents, the report of the University of New Mexico for the academic year, 1959-60. As has been true in reports of recent years, this one includes mention of several of the more interesting developments since June 3oth. In general, the report will attempt to tell you what we have done of general interest and significance in the past year and what we believe are the major challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities in the years ahead. It is gratifying to report …

The Dilute Solution Chemistry Of Antimony, Kent H. Jones Jun 1960

The Dilute Solution Chemistry Of Antimony, Kent H. Jones

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Investigation of the chemistry of the elements by conventional methods is generally limited to concentrations on the order of 10-5 M or higher. The discovery of radio-activity opened new fields in chemistry among which is the obtaining of information concerning chemical behavior of elements at very low concentrations. For many years after the initial discovery of radioactivity in 1896 by Becquerel, the study of low-concentration chemistry was limited to about ten naturally occurring radioactive elements. A renewed interest in this field was generated after 1934 when it was discovered by Curie and Joliot that radioactive elements could be artificially …

Time Variations On The Cosmic-Ray Flux Near The Geomagnetic Equator, Charles L. Hyder Jun 1960

Time Variations On The Cosmic-Ray Flux Near The Geomagnetic Equator, Charles L. Hyder

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The search for an anisotrophy in the penetrating component of the cosmic-ray flux is usually carried out with narrow-angle directionally sensitive detectors located near the surface of the earth. Directional sensitivity is achieved by using a cosmic-ray telescope, consisting of Geiger counters or of scintillation counters, in a coincidence arrangement. Thus a solid angle of acceptance for the cosmic-ray particles is defined.

Measurements Of The Intensity Of Mu-Mesons In Cosmic Rays During A Period Of Unusual Solar Activity, Ronald A. Korsak Jun 1960

Measurements Of The Intensity Of Mu-Mesons In Cosmic Rays During A Period Of Unusual Solar Activity, Ronald A. Korsak

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Because of the incomplete understanding of the processes which cosmic rays undergo in the atmosphere, there is still no generally accepted treatment of the atmospheric dependent variations of the intensity or preferred method of establishing correct coefficients.
