A Vibrational And Rotational Analysis Of Eight Simple Models Of The Hydrogen Molecule In The Ground State., Stuart Fleming Hayes Jan 1971

A Vibrational And Rotational Analysis Of Eight Simple Models Of The Hydrogen Molecule In The Ground State., Stuart Fleming Hayes

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The object of this dissertation was the investigation of the influence on the delta G curve for H2 of polarization, enhancement of charge between the nuclei, and variation of the screening parameter. A better understanding of the influence of these factors could lead to progress in estimating more accurately the dissociation energies of diatomic molecules. Also to be investigated was the correlation between these factors and the vibrational and rotational spectroscopic constants, particularly Bv.

The Heitler-London combination of atomic orbitals (referred to as phi 1) was used in every wave function The atomic orbital 2pz was used in phi 2 …

A Theoretical Analysis Of The Electronic States Of 2nd And 3rd Row Transition-Metal Complexes;-A Spectroscopic Investigation Of D5 And D6 Systems, Howard James Clifford Jan 1971

A Theoretical Analysis Of The Electronic States Of 2nd And 3rd Row Transition-Metal Complexes;-A Spectroscopic Investigation Of D5 And D6 Systems, Howard James Clifford

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A theoretical and experimental investigation of a number of transition-metal complexes was conducted. The compounds of primary interest were six-coordinated complexes containing group VIII metal ions belonging to the second and third transition series. The investigation involved the synthesis and purification of the compounds, the measurement of absorption and emission spectra and luminescent lifetimes, and the analysis of the observed spectral properties using a crystal-field model based on solutions of large secular determinants. The effects of variations of the Racah parameters on the energylevel diagrams of dn ions (n = 2, 3, ... , 8) in an octahedral crystal …

Stacking Methods And Mixing Properties Of Measure-Preserving Transformations., Sarah Lee Meyer Christiansen Jan 1971

Stacking Methods And Mixing Properties Of Measure-Preserving Transformations., Sarah Lee Meyer Christiansen

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this paper we study ergodic and mixing properties of transformations. Stacking methods are employed to construct the transformations used in this paper. Number theoretical methods are developed and used to study mixing properties. Two new mixing properties B-mixing and S-mixing are defined, and are shown to be between partial mixing and weak mixing. Finally a transformation is constructed which is weak mixing but not S-mixing, and hence not partially mixing. Several applications to additive number theory are given.

Random Evolutions On Diffusion Processes, Donald Quiring Jan 1971

Random Evolutions On Diffusion Processes, Donald Quiring

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Let {V(t,ω), t ≥ O, ω ε Ω} be a diffusion process on the real line with infinitesimal operator 1/2σ2(⋅)D2 + m(⋅)D. Markov processes {Vn, n = 1,2,....} on the real line are constructed in such a way that the paths of Vn are step functions with jump size n-1/2 and

PO [lim sup |Vn(s)-V(s)| = 0] =1

n∞ 0≤s≤t,

where PO assigns probability one to paths starting at the origin at t = 0.

Let {TV(t), t≥0, vε R} be a family of linear contraction operators …

A Comprehensive Investigation Of The Behavior Of Saturated Sands Subjected To Cyclic Triaxial Loadings., James Francis Kanipe Dec 1970

A Comprehensive Investigation Of The Behavior Of Saturated Sands Subjected To Cyclic Triaxial Loadings., James Francis Kanipe

Civil Engineering ETDs

Considerable interest in earthquake engineering has developed during the past decade. Due to the potential hazards involved in foundation failures of nuclear power plants, and because there is an increase in the demand for earth dams throughout the world together with a decrease in desirable sites, it has become imperative that reliable techniques be developed to predict the response of soils to earthquake induced forces. As an integral part of such an endeavor, this research program was directed toward the identification of the various factors which significantly influence the development of pore pressure in saturated sands subjected to cyclic stress …
