Acidities In Ethanol/Water Solvents: The Pka Of Hf, Raymond M. Merrill Dec 1972

Acidities In Ethanol/Water Solvents: The Pka Of Hf, Raymond M. Merrill

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The acidity of hydrofluoric acid in mixed ethanol/ water solvent systems was studied by determining the pKa of HF in a number of different ethanol concentrations. The effect of changing temperature on the acidity of HF in these media was also examined. The pKa's were determined using a lanthanum fluoride membrane Fluoride Specific Ion Electrode and a glass pH electrode versus the same reference electrode. The method eliminates the need to determine liquid junction potentials. By determining the pKa for HF in each ethanol/water mixture, at a number of different temperatures, thermodynamic parameters, such as free energy, enthalpy, entropy, and …

Effects Of Pressure On The Rotational Phase Transitions And Dielectric Properties Of Solid Cyclopentanol, David Nason Glidden Dec 1972

Effects Of Pressure On The Rotational Phase Transitions And Dielectric Properties Of Solid Cyclopentanol, David Nason Glidden

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The dielectric constant and loss for solid cyclopentanol have been measured at hydrostatic pressures up to 2.5 Kbar for frequencies of 1 KHz to 5 MHz from 258 °K to 200 °K. Activation parameters have been calculated from the experimental data. In addition, activation parameters have also been calcuated from a fluctuation-barrier model for dipole reorientation and compare favorably with the experimental quantities. The dielectric constant shows that the phase transition from form I, with sperically symetric orientational freedom, to form II, with restricted orientational freedom, is readily brought about at these pressures. This phase transition was elucidated by an …

First Measurements Of Earth Albedo Neutrons In Space, James R. Place Dec 1972

First Measurements Of Earth Albedo Neutrons In Space, James R. Place

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

NASA satellite OSO-6 carried as part of its payload a proton recoil telescope capable of detecting neutrons between 40 and 200 MeV with directional discrimination. Sixteen months of data from this instrument were analyzed with a view to determining properties of the earth albedo neutron flux above the atmosphere.

The variation of albedo neutron flux with geomagnetic latitude was found to be 1:4 between 0° and 40°. The angular distribution shows that about 40% fewer neutrons come upward from directly beneath the satellite compared to the number coming from a direction tangential to the top of the atmosphere. These results …

Bayesian Designs For Estimating The Difference Between The Means Of Two Normal Distributions., Thomas Alan Kelley Dec 1972

Bayesian Designs For Estimating The Difference Between The Means Of Two Normal Distributions., Thomas Alan Kelley

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The problem investigated is that of estimating, in a Bayesian framework, the difference between the means of two normal distributions under the restriction that the total sample size be fixed beforehand. Two-stage designs are first discussed. In terms of the relevant prior parameters, the optimal second stage allocation is given and formulae are presented for determining the optimal first stage sample size. General sequential procedures are discussed, and a theoretical characterization of the optimal sequential procedure is given. Some numerical illustrations are also provided.

The Dacites Of The Washakie Needles, Bunsen Peak, And The Birch Hills, Wyoming, And Their Relationship To The Absaroka-Gallatin Volcanic Province, Linda Lou Anderson Love

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

ABSTRACT

TI1e Washakie Needles, Bunsen Peak, and Birch Hills dacites are three of many plugs which intrude the Eocene flows and volcaniclastic rocks of the Absaroka-Gallatin volcanic province. The dacites contain phenocrysts of plagioclase (oligoclase to andesine), biotite, and resorbed quartz. The dacites of the Washakie Needles and Bunsen Peak also contain phenocrysts of hornblende. The rocks of Bunsen Peak and the Birch Hills have two feldspar phases (oligoclase to andesine and sanidine) and quartz in the groundmass. The Washakie Needles dacite groundmass is composed of one feldspar (andesine to anorthoclase) and quartz. The fission track ages of the dacites …

Gravity Survey Of The Mogolion Plateau Volcanic Province, Southwestern New Mexico., Douglas Hugh Krohn Dec 1972

Gravity Survey Of The Mogolion Plateau Volcanic Province, Southwestern New Mexico., Douglas Hugh Krohn

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

A regional gravity survey has been conducted over the Mogollon Plateau, a mid-Tertiary volcano-tectonic complex 125 km in diameter located in southwestern New Mexico. The complete Bouguer gravity map (3 milligal contour interval) shows gravity values ranging form -167 milligals over an outcrop of Precambrian rocks near Silver City, on the southern rim of the Plateau to -251 milligals over an alluvium filled graben east of Reserve, in the northwestern part of the Plateau giving a maximum relief of 84 milligals. Gravity data show that in general the Mogollon Plateau is an area of low density rocks: gravity values within …

Kinetics And Dynamics Of Continuous Crystallization, Karichangal C. Parthasarathy Nov 1972

Kinetics And Dynamics Of Continuous Crystallization, Karichangal C. Parthasarathy

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

A design correlation is presented for the prediction of steady state product size distributions resulting from a continuous crystallizer, based upon a single experimental determination. This has been accomplished by the definition of a new parameter called the "degree of crystallization," which has been related to the experimental nucleation and growth rates in a salting-out crystallizer. The correlation resulted from the detection of variations in the suspension density of the mother liquor which has previously been assumed constant in certain power law models. The degree of crystallization has also been described in terms of dimensionless number, length and area moments …

Adaptive Prediction Of Stationary Time Series By Modified Conjugate Direction Methods, James Otto Friel Nov 1972

Adaptive Prediction Of Stationary Time Series By Modified Conjugate Direction Methods, James Otto Friel

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

We consider the problem of obtaining finite memory linear one-step predictors for a non-deterministic weakly stationary stochastic process {ut : t = 0, ± 1, ± 2, ± ···} which have minimum mean square error. If φ(k) = Ɛ ut ut+k is the (unknown) covariance function for the process this problem reduces to solving the system of linear equations φ x = φ where φ = (φ(1), φ(2), ..., φ(d)), φ = (φ(i - j)) i, j = 1, 2, ..., d. Two iterative procedures are developed for producing a sequence of estimators {xn}n=1 …

Light Scattering From Mammalian Cells., Albert Brunsting Sep 1972

Light Scattering From Mammalian Cells., Albert Brunsting

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Light scattering intensity functions for concentrically coated spheres (core diameter 7 mu and total sphere diameter 10 mu, approximately) have been computed. The coated spheres model many types of nearly spherical mammalian cells whose nuclei have a low relative refractive index (~1.05) and cytoplasm with a slightly lower relative refractive index (~1.03). Studies are made on the relationships between the scattering coefficients for nonadsorbing, spherically symmetric scatterers. The physical origin of these coefficients is examined for absorbing scatterers. Diffraction accounts for most of the light scattered in the forwards lobe, whereas at larger angles the coated sphere scattering patterns are …

Design Of Near-Time-Optimal Feedback Controllers., Chon Ho Hyon Jul 1972

Design Of Near-Time-Optimal Feedback Controllers., Chon Ho Hyon

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This dissertation presents a method for designing near-time-optimal feedback controllers of time-invariant linear normal systems in which the system matrix is negative definite and the control input is a bounded scalar function.

The basic design approach is to systematically construct a sequence of multiplane (piecewise linear) suboptimal switching surfaces which converges to the optimal switching surface and to test the quality of the suboptimal switching surface constructed in each iteration until one which satisfies the relative (optimal/suboptimal) performance criterion given a priori is obtained.

Development Of The Oso-6 High-Energy Neutron Detector And Correlation Of Measured Solar Neutron Fluxes To Solar Flares, Frederick Young Jul 1972

Development Of The Oso-6 High-Energy Neutron Detector And Correlation Of Measured Solar Neutron Fluxes To Solar Flares, Frederick Young

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In an attempt to understand certain of the high energy processes that occur in the solar and terrestrial atmospheres and the interplanetary medium a detector of 20 to 160 MeV neutrons had been designed and constructed for inclusion in the NASA Orbiting Solar Observatory, Satellite OSO-G, which was launched into a near circular orbit at approximately 500 km altitude in August 1969. Both the angle of incidence and the energy of the neutron are determined by a telescopic arrangement of four scintillation plastic counters (Pilot B; hydrogen to carbon ratio 1:1) which generates proton recoils and provides pulse heights for …

Uniform Convergence Of Lacunary Fourier Series, Julio Edgardo Barety Jul 1972

Uniform Convergence Of Lacunary Fourier Series, Julio Edgardo Barety

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Let G be a compact group and its dual group which we suppose to be countable. We suppose that S = {n}n≥0 is a non-decreasing sequence of finite subsets of having the property that = . If F is the topological dual of a homogeneous Banach space B provided with its norm topology, one can then define in a natural way convergence in norm in F with respect to the sequence S. With F one can associate two Banach spaces Fb and Fc consisting of those elements of F whose Fourier series has bounded …

The Role Of Metaphor In Cognition:Self-Reference, Iconicity, And Simple Natures., Charles Jessup Harriman Jul 1972

The Role Of Metaphor In Cognition:Self-Reference, Iconicity, And Simple Natures., Charles Jessup Harriman

Philosophy ETDs

Since Aristotle's time a close connection has been recognized between metaphor and cognition. The connection can be explained if the process of understanding is metaphorical. Such an explanation involves self-reference in two ways. First, the explanation will necessarily apply to itself. Second, metaphor, because it creates significance, must include directions for its own interpretation. Self-reference has been held to result in paradox or nonsense.

Self-referential inconsistency is a problem only if meaning is determinate. Theories of determinate meaning arc based on object-reference, or propositional equivalence. Both bases are shown to be unsatisfactory, and a non-referential theory of meaning based on …

Patricia-Ii Two Level Overlayed Indexes For Large Libraries., James Leon Clark Jul 1972

Patricia-Ii Two Level Overlayed Indexes For Large Libraries., James Leon Clark

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

PATRICIA is a Practical Algorithm To Retrieve Information Coded In Alphanumeric. The library index built by PATRICIA is entirely core resident. PATRICIA-II extends PATRICIA by building both a lower index and an upper index. This allows for the indexing of a much larger library. The lower index is core resident and the upper index is divided into upper pages which are stored on disk. At any given time only the lower index and one upper page are in core. Upper pages reference only themselves, not each other. In addition to these innovations, PATRICIA-II retains all of the features of its …

Application Of Fast Poisson Solvers To The Numerical Approzimation Of Parabolic Problems., Billy Lewis Buzbee

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Let T be a positive constant, let D^n be the interior of the unit hypercube in R^n with boundary ∂D^n, let a(t;x1,x2,…,xn) be a strictly positive funtion, and consider the parabolic problem ut= ∇*a ∇u + s(t;x1,x2,…,xn) in D^nx[0,T]

Where

U(t)=0 on ∂D^nx[0,T]

And

U(0)=f

This report compares three A-stable marching procedures for approximating this problem by finite differences. The procedures considered are the pure explicit procedure (APX) with 6t sufficiently restricted to insure A-stability, the pure implicit procedure (PM) or backwards difference equation, and a recently developed pure implicit procedure (SOC) which is second order correct in time and …

Annual Report Of The University, 1971-1972, Volumes 1-3, University Of New Mexico

UNM Annual Reports

The University of New Mexico campus during the past few years has reflected quite accurately academic life across the country. There have been spiraling enrollments, frustrations for students as well as faculty and administration as resources have been strained to meet demands, violence, and change. In this report I have attempted to analyze some of the events we have experienced and the changes that have come about. The most interesting and perhaps the most significant change has been in student attitude. I do not foresee a return to the apathy that marked the 1950s, but I do see a move …
