Contextually-Controlled Semantic False Memories In The Form Of Derived Relational Intrusions Following Training, Paul Guinther Aug 2011

Contextually-Controlled Semantic False Memories In The Form Of Derived Relational Intrusions Following Training, Paul Guinther

Psychology ETDs

Modified versions of the original Derived Relational Intrusions Following Training paradigm (DRIFT; Guinther & Dougher, 2010) were used to engineer semantic false memories and contextually-controlled semantic false memories in group data. Experiment I replicated and extended the original DRIFT paradigm by showing that interrelated conditional discrimination training (match-to-sample; MTS) could influence subsequent false recall even in the absence of tests of symmetry and transitivity. It was also found that false recall was especially likely among those participants whose self reports indicated awareness that the study list words shared a common conditionally discriminative function. Experiment II required participants to complete a …

Gender, Power, And Authority In Indigenous Mexico City, 1700-1829, Margarita R. Ochoa Aug 2011

Gender, Power, And Authority In Indigenous Mexico City, 1700-1829, Margarita R. Ochoa

History ETDs

The question that has long tantalized historians, observing the process of Mexico City's transition from indigenous center to Spanish capital, was what became of the vast indigenous populations organized into 'cities and villages and towns' that so amazed Bernal Díaz, Hernando Cortés, and others. This dissertation aims precisely to answer that question, especially for the late colonial period when it would seem that multiple generations of the indigenous and non-indigenous would have so intermingled in the city as to be the dominant portion of the population. In addition to this demographic hybridization or mestizaje, there is the cultural question: After …

Nps In Conversation And Narratives: The Effects Of Genre, Information Flow And Interaction, Jenny Dumont Aug 2011

Nps In Conversation And Narratives: The Effects Of Genre, Information Flow And Interaction, Jenny Dumont

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

This dissertation investigates the grammar of noun phrases as produced in two genres (spontaneous conversations and Pear Film narratives) of spoken Ecuadorian Spanish. As speakers converse and narrate, they make choices about what form (full NP, pronoun, unexpressed) to use for a noun in a particular context, how to best modify that noun (choice of article and other determiners) and what syntactic role to use; this is a study of the different factors that motivate those decisions. The patterns of use described here show that noun phrase grammar is shaped by the need to track referents and also by a …

Dreams And Dust In The Black Hills: Race, Place, And National Identity In America's "Land Of Promise", Elaine Marie Nelson Aug 2011

Dreams And Dust In The Black Hills: Race, Place, And National Identity In America's "Land Of Promise", Elaine Marie Nelson

History ETDs

Indigenous groups that occupied the Black Hills for thousands of years established economic, spiritual, and political connections to the region. Through these relationships, many indigenous people formed their tribal identities in association to this land. Many of these connections with the Black Hills continue to persist in Native American tribes in the present-day. But decades of American western expansion changed indigenous relationships to the region. In 1868, the United States negotiated with the Lakota people the terms of the Fort Laramie Treaty, which established the Great Sioux Reservation and legally guaranteed the Black Hills to the Lakota tribe. When the …

Teen Pregnancy And Parenting: Attitudes And Behaviors Of Teenaged Long-Term Hispanics In Northern New Mexico, Mary Ann Osuchowski-Sanchez Jul 2011

Teen Pregnancy And Parenting: Attitudes And Behaviors Of Teenaged Long-Term Hispanics In Northern New Mexico, Mary Ann Osuchowski-Sanchez

Nursing ETDs

Teen pregnancy in Hispanic youth is a poorly understood phenomenon, thought to have numerous and overlapping sociocultural influences. Although Hispanics have had the highest teen pregnancy rates in the United States since 1995 and pregnancy rates that have declined much more slowly when compared to every other ethnic group, there is limited literature about Hispanic youth whose families are long-term residents of the United States and the factors that influence the decision-making processes and sexual behaviors of this population. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the attitudes and behaviors related to teen pregnancy and parenting in …

Black In The Non-Black Imagination: How Anti-Black Ideology Shapes Non-Black Racial Discourse, Natasha Howard Jul 2011

Black In The Non-Black Imagination: How Anti-Black Ideology Shapes Non-Black Racial Discourse, Natasha Howard

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study examines the (re)production of anti-Black ideology in critical discourses on race. Though contemporary critical discourses on race have been concerned with theorizing about the deployment of colorblind racial ideology, this study takes the position that anti-Black ideology is uniquely situated within the United States. Post-Civil Rights critical dialogues on race call for a move beyond the Black/white binary and the need to transcend dualistic racial paradigms. Though a typical critique of colorblind ideology implicates a social structure that oppresses all people of color uniformly, this study argues that the reality of material and social consequences vary depending on …

Lasting Marks: The Legacy Of Robin Cassacinamon And The Survival Of The Mashantucket Pequot Nation, Shawn Wiemann Jul 2011

Lasting Marks: The Legacy Of Robin Cassacinamon And The Survival Of The Mashantucket Pequot Nation, Shawn Wiemann

History ETDs

My dissertation is a political and cultural history of seventeenth-century Anglo-Algonquian New England. Between the Pequot War of 1637 and King Philips War in 1675-76, a covalent Anglo-Algonquian society existed in New England. This created conditions which allowed the Pequots to reconstitute their communities after the devastation of the Pequot War. Robin Cassacinamon was instrumental in this process. His skills as an interpreter, diplomat, intermediary, and community leader connected Cassacinamon to the surviving Pequots and to important regional Algonquian and Puritan figures of the time. Cassacinamon became Pequot sachem, leading his people until his death in 1692. His work provided …

Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr. Jul 2011

Crow History 1700-1950: A Political And Social Battle To Retain Their Culture, Alden Big Man Jr.

History ETDs

In my dissertation, 'Crow History 1700 — 1950: A Political and Social Battle to Retain their Culture,' I argue that the Social and Familial Kinship system utilized by the Crow is unique, and helped the Crows to preserve much of their Culture throughout the turbulent times of direct contact and assimilation. In this research I examine the movement of the Crows from eastern woodlands onto the Northern Plains, with an emphasis on the separation from the parent tribe. I argue the Crow purposely create a new and unique maternally based social and familial kinship system because of the separation from …

Evoking Visual Imagination In Teaching Writing: Esl Students' Perspectives, Izabella Kovarzina

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study examines the relationship between encouraging visual imagination and ESL (English as a Second Language) writing performance. It was designed as a onesemester case study of two groups: high-intermediate and intermediate ESL writers, using a series of pre-writing activities designed to stimulate visual imagination. As an investigation of imagination across different cultures and languages, this study is intended to shed new light on the role of visual imagination in ESL writing instruction. The data collected in this qualitative research study included four principal methods: 1) participants essay assignments exploring different writing topics throughout the 16-week semester; 2) participants' reflection …

Exploring The Experiences Of African American Students With Learning Disabilities In The Post-Secondary Setting, George Williams Jr Jul 2011

Exploring The Experiences Of African American Students With Learning Disabilities In The Post-Secondary Setting, George Williams Jr

Special Education ETDs

During the last 50 years, the overrepresentation of students from African American decent in special education programs has engendered much concern within the education community. In addition, the problem of disproportionate representation of African American students in special education exists in American society as a whole. Given these statistics, little information is available on the perceptions and experiences of African American students with learning disabilities (LD) as they enter higher education. The review of literature indicates that the body of research lacks the voices of African American students with LD in higher education. Lack of research in this area puts …

Quest For A Deaf Child: Ethics And Genetics, Teresa Blankmeyer Burke Jul 2011

Quest For A Deaf Child: Ethics And Genetics, Teresa Blankmeyer Burke

Philosophy ETDs

This project investigates the question of whether it is morally justifiable to use genetic technology in order to bear a deaf child. Even though it may seem counterintuitive to hearing people, deaf people often desire to have deaf children. Reasons for this vary, but often include a deep longing to have a child who can fully participate in ones linguistic and cultural community. Many view using genetic technology to ensure or create a child with a disability as harmful and a dereliction of parental duty; dismissing the desire for a deaf child as misguided at best. I begin by situating …

Exploring The Language Of Older Adult Learners As They Discuss Beginning A Bachelors Degree Program, Pamela Verstynen Jul 2011

Exploring The Language Of Older Adult Learners As They Discuss Beginning A Bachelors Degree Program, Pamela Verstynen

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

The purpose of this study was to explore the metaphors and cognitively structured metaphors older adult students of the Baby Boomer generation use when discussing their experiences of beginning a bachelors program. Research regarding the cognitive abilities of older adult students was explored. A phenomenological approach was used employing open-ended questions during a single interview designed to elicit information about four areas of interest: support systems, motivation, expectations and a comparison of this experience to another life experience. The analysis of students' responses identified figurative metaphors and metonymy. Qualitative analysis was applied to the data, followed by identifying cognitive metaphors …

A Temporal Fuzzy-Art Neural Network Architecture As A Model Of Phoneme Perception, Rex Devon Hjelm

Linguistics ETDs

This paper explores the applicability of Adaptive Resistance Theory- (ART-) type neural networks for finding and encoding linguistic structures, specifically those corresponding to acoustic patterns in natural speech. We build an interpretation of human perceptual response to acoustic pattern in natural speech, translating this to a neural architecture as a model of acquisition, storage, and classification of acoustic speech patterns.

The Discourse And Practice Of Native American Cuisine: Native American Chefs And Native American Cooks In Contemporary Southwest Kitchens, Lois Ellen Frank Jul 2011

The Discourse And Practice Of Native American Cuisine: Native American Chefs And Native American Cooks In Contemporary Southwest Kitchens, Lois Ellen Frank

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation analyzes the emergent Native American cuisine of the American Southwest. It consists of an ethnography of both Native American cooks, who are largely self-taught and practice in noncommercial settings, as well as Native American chefs, some self taught and some professionally trained and working in commercial settings. The ethnographic work includes both extensive and intensive field interviews with chefs and cooks, and close attention to their work in home and professional kitchens. Particular attention is paid to histories of food knowledge, as well as to food preparation concepts, techniques, performance, and aesthetics. The foods employed by these cooks …

Performing Graffiti: The Use Of Electronically And Digitally Modified Graffiti In Activist Art Practices, Megan Schultz Jul 2011

Performing Graffiti: The Use Of Electronically And Digitally Modified Graffiti In Activist Art Practices, Megan Schultz

Art & Art History ETDs

The role of the artist has expanded. Artworks increasingly occupy spaces not traditionally allocated for artistic practice. The materials and methods used for creative expression, along with the use of new spaces for the production, exhibition, and distribution of artistic activity work together to break down previous notions of the function of art. An example of a new mode for art practice may be seen in an increased use of technology by artists. Although artists have addressed technology and mechanization as subjects of their work since at least the Industrial Revolution, new artworks employ technology not only as a theme …

Neurosteriod Enhancement Of Glutamatergic Transmission Via Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 3 Chanels In The Developing Cerebellum, Paula Andrea Zamudio-Bulcock Jul 2011

Neurosteriod Enhancement Of Glutamatergic Transmission Via Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 3 Chanels In The Developing Cerebellum, Paula Andrea Zamudio-Bulcock

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Neurosteroids are compounds synthesized de novo within the central nervous system and affect brain function via genomic and non-genomic mechanisms. Sulfated neurosteroids modulate synaptic neurotransmission via interactions with various membrane receptors located at pre- and/ or postsynaptic sites, including metabotropic and ionotropic neurotransmitter receptors and ion permeable channels. The interactions of sulfated neurosteroids with these types of targets can induce rapid changes in neurotransmitter release and/or in postsynaptic responses. Since the 1940's, pregnenolone sulfate (PregS), the sulfated version of the steroid precursor, pregnenolone, has been suggested to have anti-stress, anti-aging, antidepressive, neuroprotective and memory enhancing effects in the mature brain. …

Ceramic Resource Selection And Social Violence In The Gallina Area Of The American Southwest, Connie Irene Constan Jul 2011

Ceramic Resource Selection And Social Violence In The Gallina Area Of The American Southwest, Connie Irene Constan

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines the relationship between social violence and ceramic resource procurement. Do people in middle-range societies alter resource use in response to conflict? Specifically, does social strife influence the distance to which potters in middle-range societies will travel to collect ceramic resources? Distance and quality are primary elements in clay selection. Clay is heavy, so for many potters distance is the determining factor in clay selection (Arnold 1985, 2000). Arnold (1985, 2000) estimated procurement thresholds using worldwide ethnographic data from 111 traditional societies. He found that for both clays and tempers, people prefer to travel only one kilometer, but …

The Evolutionary Ecology Of Human Infancy, Amanda Veile Jul 2011

The Evolutionary Ecology Of Human Infancy, Amanda Veile

Anthropology ETDs

Infancy is a time of profound energetic trade-offs, and in many South American native groups, infant growth is stunted and mortality by infectious disease is high. The goal of this dissertation was to explore the nature of human infancy from a life history theoretical perspective. Specifically, I investigated infant growth, feeding patterns, and thymic development in two South American native populations, the Tsimane of Bolivia and the Pumé of Venezuela. This broad goal is addressed through four specific goals: 1) to model the weaning transition using behavioral data collected in Tsimane communities where infants experience varying mortality rates, 2) to …

Constructing The "At-Risk" Student In Education: A Sociopolitical Analysis From 1960-2009, Rebecca Beals Jul 2011

Constructing The "At-Risk" Student In Education: A Sociopolitical Analysis From 1960-2009, Rebecca Beals

Sociology ETDs

In this thesis, I examine the changing conceptualization of what is called the at-risk' or disadvantaged student from 1960-2009. Using components of theory on education as an institution, the construction of knowledge, and racial formation theory, I specifically argue that research reviews and federal policy serve as sites where these core concepts in educational discourse and policy continually go through a process of rearticulation and legitimation. I use one journal, the Review of Educational Research, to examine this relationship over 50 years, from 1960-2009. I use a quantitative content analysis of research abstracts to explore 1.) how the concept of …

Immigration Discourses In The U.S. And In Japan, Chie Torigoe Jul 2011

Immigration Discourses In The U.S. And In Japan, Chie Torigoe

Communication ETDs

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate how systems of racial inequality and dominance produced at macro-institutional level discourses are reproduced and/or challenged in micro-interpersonal everyday discourses regarding immigration/foreign workers in the U.S. and in Japan. To establish a link between the discourses at these two levels, I employed a combination of critical and interpretive theoretical perspectives, and analyzed how racial ideologies were reproduced and/or challenged through participants' use of various interpretative repertoires (i.e., discursive themes and specific rhetorical moves therein) and positioning of self and Others. Interpretative repertoires and discursive positioning of self and Others are major …

The Elusive End Of The Rainbow: A (Queer) Rhetorical Analysis Of Rainbow Sash Rhetoric, Kenneth Lythgoe Jul 2011

The Elusive End Of The Rainbow: A (Queer) Rhetorical Analysis Of Rainbow Sash Rhetoric, Kenneth Lythgoe

Communication ETDs

Rainbow Sash Catholicism refers to several LGBT Catholic groups practice of wearing rainbow sashes to Pentecost Mass to denote their opposition to the Roman Catholic Church's stance on non-normative gender and sexuality. Utilizing ideological rhetorical criticism, this study analyzed the act of sash wearing itself along with multiple publicly-available articles, letters, and other rhetorical artifacts generated about sash wearing. The rhetorical artifacts examined were generated by multiple parties to sash wearing: (1) sash wearers themselves, (2) members of the Catholic clergy, and (3) lay Catholics who do not wear the rainbow sash. The principal purpose of this study was to …

Undocumented, Unapologetic, And Unafraid: Discursive Strategies Of The Immigrant Youth Dream Social Movement, Claudia Alejandra Anguiano Jul 2011

Undocumented, Unapologetic, And Unafraid: Discursive Strategies Of The Immigrant Youth Dream Social Movement, Claudia Alejandra Anguiano

Communication ETDs

This project centers on the advocacy of undocumented immigrant youth to realize the passage of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, a narrowly tailored bipartisan legislation that would provide qualifying undocumented youth a pathway to citizenship. Using a Latino/a Critical Race framework to address socio-political discourses surrounding the immigration debate, my analysis presents the ways undocumented youth communicated about their identity and agency and the ways they constructed their demands publicly in seeking passage of the DREAM Act during the years 2001 to 2010. This research purposefully departs from the traditional modality of research and conceptualizes …
