Survey Of Purchasing Characteristics Of Lovington Households, University Of New Mexico Bureau Of Business And Economic Research

This household survey analyzes the local purchasing habits of Lovington, New Mexico residents to identify where and why they spend retail dollars outside the municipality. The empirical findings show that expanding local merchandise selection, product availability, and operating hours could capture substantial revenue leaking to larger adjacent commercial hubs like Hobbs and Lubbock.

Group Credit: A Mechanism To Promote Economic Development Among New Mexico's Community Acequia Associations, Audon Jr. Trujillo

This paper seeks to advance a group credit model for providing financial assistance to Acequia (Ditch) Association members in New Mexico. Community irrigation systems have existed in New Mexico for over four hundred years. Today over 800 legally recognized Community Acequia Associations exist in New Mexico. Their members, predominantly Hispanic, have small-scale landholdings averaging from three to ten acres and own over 160,800 acres of New Mexico's surface irrigated farmland. Though this agricultural resource base is extensive, these small-scale farmers have not received an equitable portion of assistance offered to enhance agricultural production. Representing Institutionalized Mentally Retarded Persons, James W. Ellis, Ruth A. Luckasson
Faculty Scholarship
The following article explores the need for increased legal advocacy for mentally retarded persons. Contrasting the services available to the mentally ill with the limited resources for the mentally retarded, the authors highlight the unique problems of this underrepresented population, and examine alternative forums for advocacy. In a practical, straightforward analysis, the article identifies barriers to effective representation, including the fundamental problem of lawyers' and advocates' reactions to institutionalized retarded persons' appearance and behavior, and the effect of these reactions on advocacy efforts.
