Where The Wild Things Are: Investigating Body Size As A Mechanism For Persistence, Meghan Anne Balk Apr 2017

Where The Wild Things Are: Investigating Body Size As A Mechanism For Persistence, Meghan Anne Balk

Biology ETDs

Body size is a trait under selection. Genetic drift, climate, diet quality, and biotic interactions all select upon body size at the population, species, and community levels. These factors can be important in the context of rapidly changing climate. One of the ways an animal can persist in its environment is through morphological adaptation in situ. Here, I investigate four questions relating to the evolution of body size: (1) what is the limit in body size change in response to climatic change; (2) how does body size influence the thermal tolerances of animals; (3) how does body size evolve …

God Dogs And Education: Comanche Traditional Cultural Innovation And Three Generations Of Tippeconnic Men, Eric Tippeconnic Nov 2016

God Dogs And Education: Comanche Traditional Cultural Innovation And Three Generations Of Tippeconnic Men, Eric Tippeconnic

History ETDs

ABSTRACT

In my dissertation, “God Dogs and Education: Comanche Traditional Cultural Innovation and Three Generations of Tippeconnic Men,” addresses two interconnected themes: it provides a biography of three generations of Comanche men, Tippeconnic, John Tippeconnic and Norman Tippeconnic, and it offers an examination of the Comanche cultural principles, or ethos, that guided each of them through three different historical eras in the years, 1852-1987. In this research I examine the transition that Comanche people made from their origins as Shoshone people to a distinct group that controlled the majority of the southern plains. I argue that that the Comanche ethos …

My Brother, My Slave: The Social And Cultural Role Of Slavery Among The Navajo, Neil Dodge Aug 2016

My Brother, My Slave: The Social And Cultural Role Of Slavery Among The Navajo, Neil Dodge

History ETDs

This thesis concerns the lives of captives taken by the Navajo people during the 1846-1863-time period in New Mexico. The goals of this work are two-fold: First, to expand upon the available literature regarding the captivity experience of people taken in raids or conflict and to explain those captives roles within a Navajo context. The second goal addresses the need for more study of American Indian practices regarding slavery, particularly through the use of American Indian oral tradition and stories. This has been accomplished through the use of a comparative slavery analysis with another global indigenous culture. Further, through the …

"Sed Neque Silentio Pretereundum": An Analysis Of The Miracles Of Saint William Of Norwich, Sarah Rose Edwards Obenauf Jun 2016

"Sed Neque Silentio Pretereundum": An Analysis Of The Miracles Of Saint William Of Norwich, Sarah Rose Edwards Obenauf

History ETDs

William of Norwich was born around 1132, and, according to his biographer Thomas of Monmouth, he was killed by Jews during Easter week of 1144. Consequently, whenever William is mentioned in modern scholarship, it is almost always in relation to Jewish ritual murder and the blood libel legend. To date, no scholarship has systematically categorized or analyzed the miracles and visions contained in The Life and Passion of William of Norwich nor discussed what these stories suggest about the pilgrims who visited his tomb. Using disability theory, this thesis analyzes eighty medical miracles performed by the boy saint. I begin …

From The Unexpected To The Unbelievable: Thetics, Miratives And Exclamatives In Conceptual Space, Jose Hugo Garcia Macias May 2016

From The Unexpected To The Unbelievable: Thetics, Miratives And Exclamatives In Conceptual Space, Jose Hugo Garcia Macias

Linguistics ETDs

This study investigates the relationship between three linguistic functions: thetics, miratives and exclamatives. Thetics are an information structure configuration that conveys that the information is new to the addressee. The thetic subtypes selected for this study are the following: existentials (e.g. There are apples in the kitchen); presentatives (e.g. Heres your book); weather statements (e.g. It rains); physical sensation statements (e.g. My HEAD hurts) and hot news (e.g. MIchael JACKson died). Thetics do not perform a predication but present the state of affairs as a whole. Crosslinguistically, they tend to use morphosyntactic strategies that distinguish them from prototypical predications. Similar …

Heidegger's Contributions To Education, Carolyn Thomas Feb 2016

Heidegger's Contributions To Education, Carolyn Thomas

Philosophy ETDs

This dissertation is a study of Martin Heideggers thinking on education, a neglected thematic in the extensive philosophical literature of Heidegger scholarship. Discussion of Heidegger and education inevitably evokes the fault of Heidegger's involvement in National Socialism at Freiberg University. However, the core of this dissertation project is to show that Heidegger contributes favorably to our philosophical thinking on education. Further, this study aims to suggest that to consider the matter of 'Heidegger and education' only in the dark light of the act and political implications of Heidegger's becoming the first Nazi rector of Freiburg University is to miss Heidegger's …

Conflict, Tension, Strength: The History Of St. Pauls Mission, St. Labre Indian School, And St. Stephens Indian School, 1884—Present', Donna Peterson Sep 2015

Conflict, Tension, Strength: The History Of St. Pauls Mission, St. Labre Indian School, And St. Stephens Indian School, 1884—Present', Donna Peterson

History ETDs

Conflict, Tension, Strength,' explores the longevity of three separate Catholic Indian missions in the West: St. Paul's Mission in Hays, Montana; St. Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana; and St. Stephens Indian School in St. Stephens, Wyoming. These mission schools, in part, possess two common traits: they have all reached the 125-year milestone and they are all located on or adjacent to reservations that serve two distinct Indian tribes. St. Paul's Mission is on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, home to the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine tribes. St. Labre Indian School serves students from the Northern Cheyenne and Crow reservations. …

Structural Influences On Intensity Interferometry Correlation, Mark Harris Sep 2015

Structural Influences On Intensity Interferometry Correlation, Mark Harris

Civil Engineering ETDs

Pairing the information received from multiple telescopes to explore the universe is typically based on the interference phenomenon between amplitudes of light, rather their intensities. Brighter sources and larger telescopes allow for greater amounts of light to be collected, but do not specifically involve the intensity interference of electromagnetic fields. There is an alternate form of creating images of distant objects called Intensity Interferometry (II), which is less sensitive to atmospheric distortions and aberrations of telescope surfaces. The deficiencies of II are overcome as photo detectors become more sensitive and computers more powerful. In recognition of this possibility this dissertation …

An Empire Of Dust: Thomas Benton Catron And The Age Of Capital In The Hispano Borderlands, 1840-1921, Bryan W. Turo Jun 2015

An Empire Of Dust: Thomas Benton Catron And The Age Of Capital In The Hispano Borderlands, 1840-1921, Bryan W. Turo

History ETDs

An Empire of Dust' follows New Mexico's economic history from the arrival of merchant capitalism in the early nineteenth century to the maturation of a modern, state-oriented, capitalist economy by the 1920s. Within this scope, I investigate the economic life of Anglo-Missourian-turned-New-Mexico-robber-baron Thomas Benton Catron as well as the rise and then collapse of his land-based entrepreneurial empire. Catron was a lawyer, banker, businessman, and party politician, who entered the Territory of New Mexico in 1866, and who became entangled in its fate until his death in 1921. During the Gilded Age, Catron and his cohort employed the tools of …

We Subdued The Body But Not The Courage': Popular Literature, Sovereign Authority, And Ceremonial Rites Of Power During The Dutch Revolt, 1550-1598', Breanna Griego-Schmitt Jun 2015

We Subdued The Body But Not The Courage': Popular Literature, Sovereign Authority, And Ceremonial Rites Of Power During The Dutch Revolt, 1550-1598', Breanna Griego-Schmitt

History ETDs

By engaging with the vast body of pamphlet literature, rarely seen engravings and images, personal and official correspondence between leading figures, edicts and proclamations, visual renderings and written accounts of public ceremonials, and songs, poems, and placards published between 1550 and 1598, this dissertation creates a comprehensive analysis of the religio-political relations and social change in the Low Countries. My work draws upon the premises that appeared most consistently in the literature and images circulated during the Dutch Revolt: strategy and communication, sovereignty and constitutionalism, freedom of conscience, political theory in the Low Countries, rites of power, and the creation …

A Tropical Flour: Manioc In The Afro-Brazilian World, 1500-1800, Joseph Leestma May 2015

A Tropical Flour: Manioc In The Afro-Brazilian World, 1500-1800, Joseph Leestma

Latin American Studies ETDs

This research follows the movement of the American tropical root crop manioc [Manihot esulenta] throughout the Afro-Portuguese world between ca. 1500 to ca.1800. In addition to tracing the spatial movement of the plant, this thesis will also show how manioc was culturally redefined as an African crop and how this effected its reception and meaning upon returning to the New World from Africa. In tracking the geographical diffusion of the plant from the Americas to Africa, this research relies upon primary sources on the exploration of Brazil and Africa by European travelers and accounts of the early era of the …

Natural Resource Revolutions: Mexico And Cuba Within The Sphere Of U.S. Hegemony, Joseph J. García May 2015

Natural Resource Revolutions: Mexico And Cuba Within The Sphere Of U.S. Hegemony, Joseph J. García

Latin American Studies ETDs

The improbable trajectories of Mexico and Cuba give rise to compelling questions: in what ways have the revolutionary governments of Mexico and Cuba been able to practice successful defiance of the United States hegemon of the twentieth century? And how has that defiance helped to define U.S. foreign policy in Latin America? This dissertation presents a detailed examination of the contexts surrounding both the Mexican and Cuban Revolutions and their struggle against imperialist-driven interventions by the United States in Latin America and the Caribbean. I argue that through strategic decisions, the Mexican and Cuban revolutionary governments were able to ward …

Shi'ite Reformism Versus Shi'ite Fundamentalism: A Comparative Study Of Shi'ite Discursive Practices In 20th Century Iran: The Cases Of Khomeini And Hakamizadeh, Mozafar Banihashemi Sep 2014

Shi'ite Reformism Versus Shi'ite Fundamentalism: A Comparative Study Of Shi'ite Discursive Practices In 20th Century Iran: The Cases Of Khomeini And Hakamizadeh, Mozafar Banihashemi

Sociology ETDs

The patterns of socio/political transformation that Iran went through in the 20th century generated episodes of great ideological divergence within Irans shi'ite establishment. The current study seeks to shed light on an instance of textual exchange that took place in the earlier part of the century — in 1943 — but became the bedrock for subsequent discursive conflicts within shi'ism notably during and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Adopting the format of a dialogue and operating within the milieu of a shi'ite outlook, the authors of this exchange, Hakamizadeh and Khomeini, touched upon several social and political topics such as …

Monsters At The End Of Time: Gog And Magog And Ethnic Difference In The Catalan Atlas (1375), Thomas Franke Sep 2014

Monsters At The End Of Time: Gog And Magog And Ethnic Difference In The Catalan Atlas (1375), Thomas Franke

History ETDs

Although they are only mentioned briefly in Revelation, the destructive Gog and Magog formed an important component of apocalyptic thought for medieval European Christians, who associated Gog and Magog with a number of non-Christian peoples. Modern scholarship has focused primarily on medieval representations of Gog and Magog as Jews, largely dismissing other sources as obscure derivatives of these anti-Semitic depictions. However, the Catalan Atlas (1375), which depicts Gog and Magog as Tartars, problematizes this characterization. Created by Abraham Cresques, a Jewish cartographer, for Pedro IV of Aragon, I argue that the Atlas modifies traditional Christian apocalyptic narratives—and particularly those involving …

A Biographical Case Study On Tacit Knowledge And Community College Leadership, Warman T. Hall Jul 2014

A Biographical Case Study On Tacit Knowledge And Community College Leadership, Warman T. Hall

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This qualitative biographical case study explored tacit knowledge in relation to the professional practice of one educational leader in a New Mexico community college. Using a life story approach, within the confines of the biographical subjects professional career, archival document analysis, personal interviews and focus group interviews were conducted to examine the processes and events in the professional life of Dr. James Henderson that had a substantive impact on his longevity as a community college president.'

Pathologizing And Criminalizing Intoxication: Addiction, Psychoactive Drugs, And The Ideological Underpinnings Of The War On Drugs, David Korostyshevsky Jul 2014

Pathologizing And Criminalizing Intoxication: Addiction, Psychoactive Drugs, And The Ideological Underpinnings Of The War On Drugs, David Korostyshevsky

History ETDs

Since the Enlightenment, Anglo-American temperance thinkers—who were usually clergymen and physicians—have expressed broader concerns about intoxication and addiction with rhetoric that simultaneously pathologized and criminalized the unsanctioned use of psychoactive substances. During the first half of the eighteenth century, a period known as the Gin Craze, rising levels of urban drunkenness in England came under the sustained gaze of temperance-minded doctors and churchmen, who used a shared language of contagion, disease, and slavery to problematize intoxication simultaneously as a medical and criminal condition. Building on Enlightenment English temperance thought, which was transferred into the United States by physician Benjamin Rush, …

The Development Of Czech Aspectual Prefixes Through Grammaticalization And Lexicalization Processes, Pavlina Peskova Jul 2014

The Development Of Czech Aspectual Prefixes Through Grammaticalization And Lexicalization Processes, Pavlina Peskova

Linguistics ETDs

This masters thesis investigates the development of aspectual prefixes in Czech. The analysis in this work incorporates diachronic and synchronic perspectives and presents a theory about the path of development of aspectual prefixes in the framework of construction grammar. It draws from a central notion that grammar emerges from discourse and argues that the development of aspectual prefixes in Czech was fundamentally based in language use and processing. The synchronic layering of prefixed predicates in Czech provides evidence that the development of aspectual prefixes progressed gradually and suggests that grammaticalization and lexicalization processes took place. The analysis in this study …

Pre-Service Chinese English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Teachers Perceptions About Implementation Of Communicative Language Teaching, Huanan Zhang Feb 2014

Pre-Service Chinese English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Teachers Perceptions About Implementation Of Communicative Language Teaching, Huanan Zhang

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The government of China requires that the Communicative Language Teaching Approach (CLT) should be applied in primary and secondary school English education by issuing the New Curriculum early in 2001 to develop learners competence of using the language; however, implementation of CLT is still a big challenge confronting pre-service Chinese EFL teachers who experienced the traditional teaching approach over an extensive period of time. I conducted a case study research on the perceptions about CLT of twelve pre-service EFL teachers from Liaoning Province, China, to explore: a) what are pre-service Chinese EFL teachers' perceptions about CLT and its implementation in …

Power And Property Relations In Rus And Latin Europe: A Comparative Analysis, Yulia Mikhailova Feb 2014

Power And Property Relations In Rus And Latin Europe: A Comparative Analysis, Yulia Mikhailova

History ETDs

This dissertation offers a comparative analysis of forms of social and political organization in eleventh- and twelfth-century Rus, Norman England, and Aquitaine as they are represented in accounts of conflicts, disputes, peace-making, and interpersonal agreements found in Rusian, English, and Aquitanian political narratives. From this analysis, Rus, the Eastern European polity that later gave rise to Russia, Ukraine, and Belorussia, emerges as a regional variation of a European society, in contrast with the predominant view of Rus as being profoundly different from Latin Europe. A comparison of narratives from all the three regions examined in the dissertation shows that they …

"Lesbianas Presente:" Lesbian Activism, Transnational Alliances, And The State In Mexico City, 1968-1991, Lucinda Grinnell Feb 2014

"Lesbianas Presente:" Lesbian Activism, Transnational Alliances, And The State In Mexico City, 1968-1991, Lucinda Grinnell

History ETDs

My dissertation examines the emergence of lesbian movements in Mexico City in the context of the Cold War and the onset of economic neo-liberalism. A transnational approach is crucial to understand the constitution of these movements because they responded and contributed to global sexuality rights movements as well as to the global Left. During this time, Mexican lesbians allied with the political Left offering support to socialist and anti-imperialist groups. In turn, the government treated lesbian activists as they did the Left, monitoring and harassing lesbians and their organizations in an effort to weaken the groups influence on civil society. …

Columbus, New Mexico, And Palomas, Chihuahua: Transnational Landscapes Of Violence, 1888-1930, Brandon Morgan

History ETDs

In examining the area surrounding Columbus, New Mexico, and Palomas, Chihuahua, as a landscape of violence, this dissertation historicizes the process by which violent actions create a sense of place. Although neither town is considered large enough to be of much consequence, both were targeted by bellicose campaigns that sought to destabilize the Mexican state during the Porfiriato and the Mexican Revolution. Raids on the Palomas customs house were, at least in part, responses to the drive of the Mexican government under Porfirio Díaz to create modern progress and order in Mexico. For many inhabitants of rural northwestern Chihuahua, the …

Process Of Definition And Development Of The Haitian-Dominican Borderland, Carolina Bonilla Elvira Jul 2013

Process Of Definition And Development Of The Haitian-Dominican Borderland, Carolina Bonilla Elvira

Latin American Studies ETDs

The borderline that currently divides the island of Hispaniola has undergone a complicated process of definition. Since colonial times, central authorities have claimed the area while contradictorily ignoring the societies that developed in the region. It was not until the first decades of the twentieth century that the two countries were officially divided and a borderline was enforced. The massacre of approximately 15,000 Haitians ordered by the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1937 is the event that brought attention to the border nationalization process. In my research I argue that the conflict between the two countries had both an economic …
