The Scientific Conquest Of New Mexico: Local Legacies Of The Manhattan Project 1942-2015, Lucie Anne Genay
The Scientific Conquest Of New Mexico: Local Legacies Of The Manhattan Project 1942-2015, Lucie Anne Genay
American Studies ETDs
In the initial scoping phase of this research project, the main question I used for guidance was "to what extent and how did the Manhattan Project impact New Mexico and New Mexicans?" My first objective was to assess the magnitude of the state's transformation before addressing the other questions that soon ensued from this original reflection. A brief historical review of the state's transformation will introduce these questions, and comparing pre-World War II and post-Cold War New Mexico will justify the term "revolutionized" I used above. This dissertation retraces the story of this scientific colonization from the point of view …

Effectiveness Of Occupational Therapy Interventions For Adults With Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Evidence-Based Review, Beverly Apodaca, Melissa Watson, Janet Poole, Patricia Siegel
Effectiveness Of Occupational Therapy Interventions For Adults With Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Evidence-Based Review, Beverly Apodaca, Melissa Watson, Janet Poole, Patricia Siegel
Occupational Therapy
Background/Purpose: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition that affects the synovial membrane of the joints and is often associated with pain, fatigue, deformity, and significant limitations in meaningful occupations. This can lead to difficulty in performing activities of daily living and work duties or loss of social participation and relationships. This systematic review examined intervention studies to determine the efficacy of occupational therapy related interventions for adults with rheumatoid arthritis: What is the effectiveness of interventions within the scope of occupational therapy practice on occupational performance (function), pain, fatigue, and depression in persons with rheumatoid arthritis? Methods: This systematic …
Comparison Of Tractor Seating Under Dynamic Conditions For Farmers With Ergonomics Of Difference, Julianna Nacion, Carla Wilhite
Comparison Of Tractor Seating Under Dynamic Conditions For Farmers With Ergonomics Of Difference, Julianna Nacion, Carla Wilhite
Occupational Therapy
Purpose: Agricultural machinery exposes farmers to unique environmental, biological, and physical factors. These conditions place these individuals at a higher risk of developing musculoskeletal and vibratory disorders. The purpose of this study is to compare the seated pressure distribution of participants on four different intervention cushions during dynamic tractor conditions. We predicted that an existing contour tractor seat will not be as effective in distributing seated pressure of the tractor operator as the four intervention cushions. Methods: Using a quantitative cross-over design, three participants were recruited through an informal convenience sampling method. Participants met the inclusion criteria by being adults, …

Agriculture For Life: A Guide For Health Promotion And Participation For Farmers With Health Challenges, Macaela Gomez, Tim Neugebauer, Carla Wilhite
Occupational Therapy
Background/Purpose: With a growing number of people using the Internet to access health information, the need for reliable and accessible content is increasingly important. Challenges in health literacy and web accessibility can significantly decrease ones ability to prevent, treat, or adapt to illness or injury. Increasingly, agricultural producers are utilizing computers and technology, as Internet access becomes more widespread through rural areas. Farmers and ranchers are at a high risk for injury and disability due to the physical nature and long hours of the occupation. Agriculture for Life aims to provide reliable and accessible web-based health information for New Mexico …
Prevalence Of Farmer Health Conditions, Kristiana Dion, Carla Wilhite
Prevalence Of Farmer Health Conditions, Kristiana Dion, Carla Wilhite
Occupational Therapy
Background/Purpose: To determine the prevalence of health conditions and impairments among agricultural producers residing in New Mexico. The U.S. Department of Labor reports the average age of a farmer is 56 and projected to increase. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports farming, ranching and other agricultural producers are in the top 10 of the most fatal professions in the United States. The population is at risk for a number of occupational and aging related injuries and disabilities. Currently, the prevalence of health conditions and impairments among farmers and ranchers in New Mexico is unknown. The goal of this study was …

Sensory Processing Deficits In Children That Have Experienced Trauma Or Neglect, Anjuli R. Sears, Jackolyn Apodaca, Heidi Sanders
Occupational Therapy
Background/Purpose: Children who experience trauma or neglect in early childhood often experience delays in multiple areas of development. One area that may be affected from experiencing early deprivation or trauma is the ability to process sensory stimuli. Sensory differences have been recorded in parental reports and clinical observations of children who have experienced trauma, however the current body of literature supporting this finding is minimal (Purvis, McKenzie, Cross, & Razuri, 2013). With the population of children and youth within the treatment foster care system increasing in size, clinicians are looking to the research for evidence based, trauma informed strategies, and …

Project ECHO Bibliography
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is still a major health problem throughout the world. HCV patients living in rural areas are less fortunate than their counterparts residing in populous urbanized regions. The lack of medical resources and properly trained medical personnel in rural regions make it especially burdensome for HCV patients seeking treatment. Dr. Sanjeev Arora at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center took initiative to resolve the issue at hand by developing a model named Project Extension for Community Health Outcomes (ECHO). ECHO connects primary care providers (PCPs), usually family medicine physicians, in local communities with specialists. …

Considerations In Caring For People With Physical Disabilities: A Course Elective, Ingrid C. Hendrix, Sarah K. Morley, Jennifer Benson
Posters and Presentations
Context: People with disabilities represent a significant portion of the population. A 2007 Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Disability in America' noted that barriers to equal health care for people with disabilities include physical barriers, and knowledge and attitudes related to caring and interacting with people with disabilities. People with disabilities (PWD), as with many other groups disadvantaged by social inequities, often receive suboptimal care from health care providers. The root cause of this inequity in care can be traced to a lack of training for health care providers in dealing with PWD. The AAMC has recommended medical …
