Elbow Injuries In The Throwing Athlete: A Review, Drew K. Newhoff Jan 2017

Elbow Injuries In The Throwing Athlete: A Review, Drew K. Newhoff

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Overhand-throwing motions can create supraphysiologic stresses on the elbow. Repeated stresses often result in overuse injuries affecting the elbow, which are commonly seen in throwing athletes. Noted problems include medial epicondylitis, valgus extension overload, olecranon stress fractures, ulnar neuritis, and damage to the ulnar collateral ligament. Symptoms of pain or numbness at presentation vary in location depending on the injury. Successful diagnosis is typically made using results of physical examinations of elbow, wrist, and arm extensions; results of tests for valgus instability; and findings radiographs can all help indicate the problem. However, pathological features of these injuries are not always …

Current Issues In Treatment Of Anterior Shoulder Instability: A Review, Ian Power Jan 2017

Current Issues In Treatment Of Anterior Shoulder Instability: A Review, Ian Power

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Anterior shoulder instability can be problematic in the young, active population, particularly in athletes and military personnel. The shoulder joint is the most frequently dislocated joint, and there is a high rate of dislocation recurrence in younger patients. The stability of the glenohumeral joint is conferred through the bony anatomy and the static and dynamic stabilizers. Recognizing pathological features, identifying glenoid bone loss, and detecting Bankart and Hill-Sachs lesions are key to formulating an appropriate treatment strategy and improving surgical outcomes. Furthermore, the concept of critical bone loss has been refined by looking at subcritical loss. Recent evidence has shown …

Transhumeral Amputation For Treating Necrotizing Fasciitis Infection Of The Upper Extremity: Report Of Two Cases, Drew K. Newhoff, Amber L. Price, Christina Salas, Deana M. Mercer Jan 2017

Transhumeral Amputation For Treating Necrotizing Fasciitis Infection Of The Upper Extremity: Report Of Two Cases, Drew K. Newhoff, Amber L. Price, Christina Salas, Deana M. Mercer

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Necrotizing fasciitis, an infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, can spread rapidly. Studies have emphasized the importance of prompt surgical intervention with aggressive debridement of diseased tissue; however, mortality rates are high despite immediate treatment. We describe two men, aged 44 years (case 1) and 74 years (case 2), presenting with necrotizing fasciitis who underwent aggressive surgical intervention, multiple debridements, and eventual transhumeral amputation of the upper extremity. In each case, the patients were discharged from the hospital to their homes on amoxicillin-clavulanate at postoperative days 15 (case 1) and 32 (case 2). Findings of laboratory studies had normalized. …

Sciatic Nerve Palsy After Operative Treatment Of Subtrochanteric Femur Fracture Resulting From Postoperative Hematoma: A Case Report, Tony G. Pedri, Gehron P. Treme Jan 2017

Sciatic Nerve Palsy After Operative Treatment Of Subtrochanteric Femur Fracture Resulting From Postoperative Hematoma: A Case Report, Tony G. Pedri, Gehron P. Treme

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Treatment of subtrochanteric femur fractures can be difficult owing to high risk of complications. No cases of sciatic nerve palsy after hematoma following open reduction and intramedullary nailing of a subtrochanteric femur fracture have been reported. We describe a 28-yearold man who presented with a subtrochanteric fracture in the left femur after a motor-vehicle collision, in whom open reduction and intramedullary nailing led to an immediate postoperative hematoma and sciatic nerve palsy. Prompt diagnosis and early wound exploration resulted in complete resolution of the palsy at 1 month postoperatively. Our findings reinforce the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment in …

Plithogeny, Plithogenic Set, Logic, Probability, And Statistics, Florentin Smarandache Jan 2017

Plithogeny, Plithogenic Set, Logic, Probability, And Statistics, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book we introduce for the first time, as generalization of dialectics and neutrosophy, the philosophical concept called plithogeny. And as its derivatives: the plithogenic set (as generalization of crisp, fuzzy, intuitionistic fuzzy, and neutrosophic sets), plithogenic logic (as generalization of classical, fuzzy, intuitionistic fuzzy, and neutrosophic logics), plithogenic probability (as generalization of classical, imprecise, and neutrosophic probabilities), and plithogenic statistics (as generalization of classical, and neutrosophic statistics).

Plithogeny is the genesis or origination, creation, formation, development, and evolution of new entities from dynamics and organic fusions of contradictory and/or neutrals and/or non-contradictory multiple old entities.

Plithogenic …

Environmental Racism With A Faint Green Glow, Eric Jantz Jan 2017

Environmental Racism With A Faint Green Glow, Eric Jantz

Natural Resources Journal

For the last thirty years, environmental justice, that is, the equitable distribution of environmental pollution among all members of society, has informed environmental decision-making at every level of government. While most Federal agencies responsible for environmental regulation have taken meaningful steps to address the disparate impacts of pollution on low-income communities and communities of color, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission has lagged behind. As a result, low-income communities and communities of color bear the disproportionate burden of nuclear pollution in the United Sates.

The Effect Of School Construction On Educational Outcomes Among Females: Evidence From Nepal, Animesh Giri, Vinish Shrestha Jan 2017

The Effect Of School Construction On Educational Outcomes Among Females: Evidence From Nepal, Animesh Giri, Vinish Shrestha

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

We estimate the impact of increases in schools constructed from 1985 to 1995 on girls educational outcomes in Nepal. We use a difference-in-differences framework by combining the across-district differences in the number of new schools with variation in exposure to these schools created by the virtue of individuals being of school-going-age during the school construction period. Our results indicate that the construction of an additional school (per 1,000 square kilometers) increased the probability to read and write among females by 1.5 percentage points and increased their highest level of schooling attained by 0.12 units but did not affect basic literacy …

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler Jan 2017

Extending Data Curation Service Models For Academic Library And Institutional Repositories, Jon Wheeler

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Many academic libraries have implemented institutional repositories (IR), which offer some potential for publishing and archiving data but can fall short of usability expectations and requirements. As general purpose repositories, IR's may lack the metadata and service capabilities to dynamically represent data and to effectively capitalize on complex, domain oriented metadata schema such as the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) or the ISO 19115-2014 Geographic information metadata standards. For libraries interested in providing data publishing services, one alternative to the domain agnostic nature of IR content and metadata models is to maintain the IR for traditional document types and in addition …

U.S. Nonprofit Activity In Cuba: Challenges In Cuban Law And Practice, Laura Spitz, Elizabeth Brundige, Lucía Domínguez Cisneros, Eduardo Peñalve

Faculty Scholarship

American regulatory restrictions on nonprofit activity in Cuba have decreased dramatically over the past three years.1 As a result, interest in undertaking projects in Cuba among U.S. nonprofits has increased significandy over that same period. Despite President Trump's recent directive that rolled back several aspects of the previous administration's Cuba policy and ordered new restrictions on U.S.-Cuban engagement, 2 U.S. nonprofits are unlikely to be deterred from seeking to expand their engagement in Cuba over the long term. As nonprofits explore potential opportunities and navigate legal and political challenges, this Article seeks to advance the conversation 3 by answering the …

The Prisonization Of America's Public Schools, Maryam Ahranjani Jan 2017

The Prisonization Of America's Public Schools, Maryam Ahranjani

Faculty Scholarship

Over the past generation, episodes of mass school violence in American public schools have led to the “prisonization” of schools. The problems associated with prisonization practices have been identified and well-documented in the legal literature over the past few years, and they include the school-to-prison pipeline, as well as the over-policing of vulnerable populations like students with disabilities and African-American and Latino children. This piece seeks to contribute to existing literature in two ways. While national attention has turned to the lack of rigorous research on the effectiveness of prisonization practices, and studies are underway to identify whether prisonization practices …
