Use Of Chemical And Isotopic Identifiers To Characterize Ground Water Contamination Near Two Uranium Mill Sites, Central Nm, Mitchell T. Schatz
Use Of Chemical And Isotopic Identifiers To Characterize Ground Water Contamination Near Two Uranium Mill Sites, Central Nm, Mitchell T. Schatz
Civil Engineering ETDs
Chemical and isotopic signatures were used to discriminate between anthropogenic ground water and naturally occurring constituents. The U-234/U-238 activity ratio (AR) was determined in 34 samples from several aquifers underlying two former uranium mills near Milan, NM. Disposal of uranium ore waste into unlined tailings resulted in ground water contamination in the Lower San Mateo Creek Basin area. Ground water contamination from uranium mills have impacted the local ground water for residents down-gradient from the mills.
Previous studies that used uranium isotopes identified activity ratios of mill-derived uranium were near the secular equilibrium of 1, and those from natural ground …

Implementing Lgbtq Curricular Change: A Trainee-Driven Interdisciplinary Approach, Kory A. Tillery, Jacob L. Mayfield, Cameron S. Crandall
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
The release of the AAMC curriculum guidelines pertaining to people who are LGBT, gender nonconforming, or born with differences of sex development (DSD) in 2014 significantly enhanced medical schools’ ability to implement curricular change. At our institution, we began this process with the goal of making it as trainee-driven as possible. Though our curricular reform coalition initially consisted only of students and faculty from the School of Medicine, we have expanded to include students, residents, and faculty members, as well as trainees from other health sciences programs, including pharmacy and nursing. We have structured our efforts around the “salt and …

A Matter Of Health And Safety: Science And The State In Texas Abortion Legislation, Alexis Margaret Maclennan
A Matter Of Health And Safety: Science And The State In Texas Abortion Legislation, Alexis Margaret Maclennan
Sociology ETDs
Objective. To analyze legislative use of the cultural and epistemic authority of science and medical expertise to regulate the practice of medicine in the area of abortion care. Methods. Using qualitative content analysis of 184 pieces of Texas legislative proposals between 1993 and 2015 this research examines how legislators to deploy medical expertise to justify abortion restrictions despite constraints from the courts. Results. Texas legislation co-opts symbols of science and medical expertise including technical language, references to empirical evidence, and a stance of objectivity. Constraints from the courts influence this focus on “medically necessary” measures and objective, scientifically supported regulations. …

The Price of War: Advances in Military Medicine exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, explored the significant medical innovations arising from wartime, with a special focus on New Mexico's contributions. Study Of Vibration For Detection And Recognition Of Concealed Machinery Within Buildings, Sushil Ghimire
Study Of Vibration For Detection And Recognition Of Concealed Machinery Within Buildings, Sushil Ghimire
Civil Engineering ETDs
Recently international concern about nuclear proliferation has rapidly increased. Some governmental agencies have an interest in remotely detecting and recognizing concealed machinery within buildings to detect any anomalous activity occurring inside the building.
The vibration studies of the roof and the exhaust structures of an existing utility building, the Ford Utility Center at the University of New Mexico and a simplified laboratory structure representing an industrial building, called the doghouse are presented in this thesis. The vibration studies presented allow the reader to understand to what extent it is possible to identify machines concealed within a building.
To identify machines …

The Relationship Between Online Students' Use Of Services And Their Feelings Of Mattering, Tracy L. Hart
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
The purpose of this single case study was to examine the relationship between online students’ use of support services and their feelings of mattering using a convergent parallel research design to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Students enrolled exclusively in online classes during the academic year 2015-2016 at the University of New Mexico (UNM) were invited to participate. The survey was based on the theoretical and conceptual frameworks for comprehensive services and mattering theory. Responses provided descriptive statistics and correlation analysis with stories that added to the description of students’ service experiences.
Service-to-service correlations showed correlation strength of moderate, strong, …

Brief For Association Of Commerce & Industry As Amici Curiae, Beaudry V. Farmers Insurance Exchange, Et Al., Verónica C. Gonzales
Faculty Scholarship
Plaintiff-Appellee Craig Beaudry seeks to make New Mexico the sole jurisdiction in the nation in which the mere act of enforcing an arms-length contract against a breach- lawfully and in compliance with the contract's negotiated terms--can result in the enforcing party being liable under tort to pay compensatory and punitive damages to the breaching party. Affirming such a rule would upend long-established business principles and expectations; convolute fundamental distinctions between contract and tort law; materially invade and alter established bodies of substantive law in other areas; and create bad law and even worse policy for the people and businesses of …
