Measuring Accommodation On Facebook Between Single-A Minor League Baseball Teams And Facebook Users, Michael James Stocz Jul 2017

Measuring Accommodation On Facebook Between Single-A Minor League Baseball Teams And Facebook Users, Michael James Stocz

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The following research was designed to introduce CAT into a practical setting for social media managers while primarily examining Minor League Baseball (MiLB) at the Single-A level. Single-A baseball has not been examined solely in a social media setting, which was why this level of MiLB was selected. Study A was designed to measure the levels of accommodation across various posting strategies (neoliberal, social, team related, open code) and the subsequent number of likes and number of comments accompanying each post. The accommodation scores, measured through the Language Inquiry and Word Count software (LIWC, pronounced “Luke”), accompanied by a series …

Buried History: Reclaiming Native Diplomats In Congressional Cemetery, Rachael Cassidy Jul 2017

Buried History: Reclaiming Native Diplomats In Congressional Cemetery, Rachael Cassidy

History ETDs

ABSTRACT: The Congressional Cemetery in Washington D.C., the first national cemetery in United States, holds the remains of thirty six Native Diplomats who died in capital city while negotiating treaties for their nations. The diplomats faced discrimination in Washington D.C. because they were perceived as racially inferior. Myths, such as Manifest Destiny and the vanishing Indian, justified the displacement of Indigenous people from their homelands and attempted to erase them as America’s first people. Although Native diplomats faced intense racial stereotypes and intentional deception during treaty negotiations, they skillfully negotiated to protect their nations and their sovereignty. The stories of …

A Numerical Investigation Of The Implications Of Altered Channel-Floodplain Connectivity On Hydrodynamic Flood Wave Processes, Colin F. Byrne Jul 2017

A Numerical Investigation Of The Implications Of Altered Channel-Floodplain Connectivity On Hydrodynamic Flood Wave Processes, Colin F. Byrne

Civil Engineering ETDs

With severely altered rivers throughout the developed world, hydrodynamic processes and floodplain connectivity have changed drastically. The research presented here focuses on quantification of two hydrodynamic processes: flood wave attenuation and channel-floodplain fluxes. Objectives of the three research chapters were to (1) evaluate how the ecosystem service of flood wave attenuation has changed with the implementation of river engineering practices as well as contemporary river restoration efforts, (2) describe the sensitivities of flood wave attenuation to contemporary and altered conditions, and (3) characterize channel-floodplain connectivity through lateral flux metrics. All chapter objectives were met using high-resolution, two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling techniques …

Rejection Of Low Molecular Weight Neutral Organics By Reverse Osmosis Membranes For Potable Reuse, Lauren N. Breitner Jul 2017

Rejection Of Low Molecular Weight Neutral Organics By Reverse Osmosis Membranes For Potable Reuse, Lauren N. Breitner

Civil Engineering ETDs

Factors such as increasing population, urbanization, and climate change have made the management of water resources a challenge for many municipalities. Water reuse, especially direct potable reuse (DPR) of treated wastewater, is increasingly seen as a potential source of water for communities facing water shortages. Due to improvements in analytical capabilities as well as concerns regarding toxicology of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), the need for investigating the removal of CECs has become crucial for further DPR considerations. Reverse osmosis (RO) has been demonstrated to remove many CECs. Many studies, however, have investigated the removal of well-known CECs, often with …

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction And Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation As An Intervention For Chronic Pain Management, Elizabeth A. Mccallion Jul 2017

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction And Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation As An Intervention For Chronic Pain Management, Elizabeth A. Mccallion

Psychology ETDs

Chronic pain is a public health concern impacting approximately 100 million Americans; more than the rates of diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancer combined. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is an effective treatment for chronic pain; however, the effects of MBSR tend to be small. A recent study suggests that tDCS in combination with a mindfulness-based intervention may enhance the learning of mindfulness skills (Witkiewitz et al., 2015). The current study used a randomized design to examine the effectiveness of active tDCS (2.0 mA) -enhanced MBSR compared to sham tDCS (0.1 mA)- enhanced MBSR. Participants were individuals diagnosed with chronic …

Assessing The Utility Of Phenylene Ethynylenes Against Candida Species Pathogens, Rina Sylejmani Jul 2017

Assessing The Utility Of Phenylene Ethynylenes Against Candida Species Pathogens, Rina Sylejmani

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Candida species are the cause of many bloodstream infections through contamination of indwelling medical devices. These infections account for a 40% mortality rate, posing a significant risk to immunocompromised patients. Traditional treatments against Candida infections include amphotericin B and various azole treatments. Unfortunately, these treatments are associated with high toxicity, and resistant strains have become more prevalent. As a new frontier, light-activated phenylene ethynylenes have shown promising biocidal activity against Gram-positive and -negative bacterial pathogens, as well as the environmental yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this thesis, we monitored the viability of Candida species after treatment with a cationic conjugated …

The second chapter integrates hydrological and economic systems to examine the impact of drought on these two systems and explores the spatial impact of policies aimed to mitigate the drought impact. The systems dynamics model developed for this chapter simultaneously considers the physical hydrology in the Middle Rio Grande water basin in New Mexico, the engineered water management system, and a behavioral model of residential water demand for three cities: Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The simulation results showed that droughts that occur in later periods, …

Embodying The West: A Literary And Cultural History Of Environment, Body, And Belief, Julie E. Williams Jul 2017

Embodying The West: A Literary And Cultural History Of Environment, Body, And Belief, Julie E. Williams

English Language and Literature ETDs

My dissertation challenges the dominant narrative identity about Western embodiment and opens the field of Western literary studies as it explores what the West looks like to women writers for whom it is not a space of regeneration through violence. I argue that women’s writing reconceptualizes Western literature, creating a counter-narrative about American identity by shaping a space for and a discourse about the embodied experiences that have been marginalized, silenced, and ignored. Through examining discourses of health and embodiment in women’s writing about the American West from the 1880s to the present day, my study brings together a diverse …

A Longitudinal Cross-Sectional Study On The Acquisition Of Navajo Verbs In Children Aged 4 Years 7 Months Through 11 Years 2 Months, Melvatha R. Chee Jul 2017

A Longitudinal Cross-Sectional Study On The Acquisition Of Navajo Verbs In Children Aged 4 Years 7 Months Through 11 Years 2 Months, Melvatha R. Chee

Linguistics ETDs

This dissertation presents an analysis of child acquisition and production of the Navajo verb construction. My data shows that Navajo children extract meaningful verb units that do not adhere to the linguistic boundaries normally ascribed to the Navajo verb. Through my data, I have observed that children use morphologically and phonologically reduced units. They produce verb constructions that exhibit fusion with units outside the verb such as postpositions. As the children acquire larger units, or chunks, morphophonological interactions are preserved.

This dissertation is a longitudinal cross-sectional analysis of child language data collected from four Navajo speaking children. The children, all …

Reactions To Market Failure And Approaches To Reduce Market Failure, Yingzhe Cheng

Economics ETDs

Market failure can have serious negative consequences on human welfare, including various health risks to people. How to best correct market failure becomes an important question. Different approaches may reduce market failure, such as direct government regulation, or market based approaches. This research explores consumers’ or societies’ reactions to market failure and approaches to reduce market failure.

The first study uses a random utility model and a choice experiment method to estimate Chinese parents’ marginal willingness-to-pay for potential policy changes that target overall food safety. Results suggest that a policy that provides both direct government regulation and information to create …

Distributed Knowledge Discovery For Diverse Data, Hossein Hamooni Jul 2017

Distributed Knowledge Discovery For Diverse Data, Hossein Hamooni

Computer Science ETDs

In the era of new technologies, computer scientists deal with massive data of size hundreds of terabytes. Smart cities, social networks, health care systems, large sensor networks, etc. are constantly generating new data. It is non-trivial to extract knowledge from big datasets because traditional data mining algorithms run impractically on such big datasets. However, distributed systems have come to aid this problem while introducing new challenges in designing scalable algorithms. The transition from traditional algorithms to the ones that can be run on a distributed platform should be done carefully. Researchers should design the modern distributed algorithms based on the …

The Ivory Tower, Urban Growth, And State Subjugation: An Historical Analysis On The Construction Of Student Identities And The Public Good During University Generated Redevelopment Projects, Jacob R. Wolff Jul 2017

The Ivory Tower, Urban Growth, And State Subjugation: An Historical Analysis On The Construction Of Student Identities And The Public Good During University Generated Redevelopment Projects, Jacob R. Wolff

Geography ETDs

Having become almost cliché in academic discourses, the term gentrification offers a conceptualization of sociospatial transformation too narrow for contemporary understandings of inequality within the post-industrial city. Generalizations of a wealthy populous displacing working-class and marginalized populations fail to address the diversity, complexity, and scope of economic hollowing-out and fail to fully account for other incoming subpopulations such as the emergent “creative class,” comprised of university-educated individuals who are not necessarily considered affluent by traditional economic measures. To this end, scholars in the United Kingdom have identified university neighborhood formation as a significant yet distinct process of place production that …

Dengue Vaccination Modulates The Dengue-Zika Viral System Via Immunogenic Cross-Talk, Noah Joseph Bernard Silva

Biology ETDs

A vaccine for dengue, a viral disease which is a major driver of morbidity and mortality in tropical and subtropical regions, has recently been approved by eleven countries. While vaccination has the potential to reduce disease burden, the approved vaccine faces challenges due to the interactions between the four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV1-4) and the potential interactions with Zika virus (ZIKV), a related flavivirus. In this study, we propose a mathematical model incorporating both DENV and ZIKV in order to investigate the effects of viral competition on dengue vaccine performance, the potential for change in incidence of Zika due …

Climate And Culture: Values, Risk Perception, And Climate Change Adaptation In Delta County, Colorado, Tara Kane Prendergast Jul 2017

Climate And Culture: Values, Risk Perception, And Climate Change Adaptation In Delta County, Colorado, Tara Kane Prendergast

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis contributes to literature on climate risk perception and adaptive capacity. It is an investigation into the relationship between values, climate risk perception, and agricultural practices at the community scale. Findings indicate that cultural values have a strong influence on both climate risk perception and the specific practices agriculturalists employ to contend with the environmental conditions they find themselves operating within. They also suggest that environmental conditions – specifically the prevalence of microclimates, topographical complexity, and significant preexisting variability – play an important role in influencing agriculturalists’ perception and climate management.

A qualitative project, this paper is based on …

An Integrated Bioinformatic/Experimental Approach For Discovering Novel Type Ii Polyketides Encoded In Actinobacterial Genomes, Wubin Gao Jul 2017

An Integrated Bioinformatic/Experimental Approach For Discovering Novel Type Ii Polyketides Encoded In Actinobacterial Genomes, Wubin Gao

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Discovery of new natural products (NPs) is critical both for diseases treatment and crops protection. Numerous NP biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) in sequenced microbial genomes allow identification of new NPs through genome mining. Developing an integrated bioinformatic/experimental approach for discovering novel type II polyketides (PK-IIs) facilitates investigation of this family of NPs in an efficient, systematic way. Here, we developed an approach to analyze ketosynthase α/β (KSα/β) gene sequences to predict PK-II core structures, allowing us to target novel PK-II BGCs either from isolated genomic DNA or genomes from the NCBI databank, and to isolate novel PK-IIs produced by these …
