Cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates are significantly higher in low- and middle-income countries compared with the United States and other developed countries. This disparity is caused by decreased access to screening, often coupled with low numbers of trained providers offering cancer prevention and treatment services. However, similar disparities are also found in underserved areas of the United States, such as the Texas-Mexico border, where cervical cancer mortality rates are 30% higher than in the rest of Texas. To address these issues, we have adopted the Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) program, a low-cost telementoring model previously proven …

An Examination Of Policy Options For Achieving Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions In New Jersey, Gabriel Pacyniak
An Examination Of Policy Options For Achieving Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions In New Jersey, Gabriel Pacyniak
Faculty Scholarship
An Examination of Policy Options for Achieving Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions in New Jersey surveys emissions and energy trends, describes a “deep decarbonization pathway” for the state, and identifies the types of policies that would be necessary to achieve those reductions. Many of the policies address the power and transportation sectors, which account for more than 60 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions from New Jersey. The report also includes options for improving building efficiency, reducing methane leaks from natural gas infrastructure, restoring natural carbon sinks in forests and wetlands, and incorporating equity considerations to address the needs of frontline …

A Retinal Vessel Detection Approach Based On Shearlet Transform And Indeterminacy Filtering On Fundus Images, Florentin Smarandache, Yanhui Guo, Umit Budak, Abdulkadir Sengur
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
A fundus image is an effective tool for ophthalmologists studying eye diseases. Retinal vessel detection is a significant task in the identification of retinal disease regions. This study presents a retinal vessel detection approach using shearlet transform and indeterminacy filtering. The fundus image’s green channel is mapped in the neutrosophic domain via shearlet transform. The neutrosophic domain images are then filtered with an indeterminacy filter to reduce the indeterminacy information. A neural network classifier is employed to identify the pixels whose inputs are the features in neutrosophic images. The proposed approach is tested on two datasets, and a receiver operating …

Project ECHO Bibliography
Objective: Pain is an extremely common complaint in primary care, and patient outcomes are often suboptimal. This project evaluated the impact of Project ECHO Pain videoconference case-based learning sessions on knowledge and quality of pain care in two Federally Qualified Health Centers. Design: Quasi-experimental, pre-post intervention, with comparison group. Setting: Two large, multisite federally qualified health centers in Connecticut and Arizona. Subjects: Intervention (N = 10) and comparison (N = 10) primary care providers. Methods: Primary care providers attended 48 weekly Project ECHO Pain sessions between January and December 2013, led by a multidisciplinary pain specialty team. Surveys and focus …

Project ECHO Bibliography
Background
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have outlined core elements of effective antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs). However, many smaller community and “critical access hospitals” (CAHs) lack resources necessary to fully implement these programs. Tele-antimicrobial stewardship is highlighted in the Federal Register as a potential solution for such situations.
Methods
In January 2017 we implemented UW-TASP/ECHO, a remotely-based electronic answer to the problem of limited resources for ASPs at CAHs. This interdisciplinary collaboration involves infectious diseases (ID) faculty and fellows, ID pharmacists, and microbiologists from UW Medicine; epidemiologists from Washington State Department of Health (WA-DOH); program/technical support staff; …

Mathematical Modeling For Predicting Chemotherapy And Nanoparticle Treatment Efficacy In Breast Cancer, Terisse Arielle Brocato
Mathematical Modeling For Predicting Chemotherapy And Nanoparticle Treatment Efficacy In Breast Cancer, Terisse Arielle Brocato
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
Breast cancer treatment response varies by subtype, treatment regiment, and additionally by vasculature characteristics. For this reason, breast cancer is a model disease for the development of both targeted therapy and prognostic and predictive biomarkers. Mathematical modeling allows for personalized patient specific prediction of treatment outcome based on parameters found to be important to the cancer type. Mathematical modeling is beneficial in providing insight into why cancer treatment fails and in what cases, additionally determining what characteristics result in a successful treatment. Presented in Chapter 1 is a scientific introduction and discussion focusing on representative modeling works specified towards breast …

Elearning For Medical Educators (Elme): Pod Network 2016 Educational Development Internship Program, Gary A. Smith, Audriana Stark
Office for Medical Educator Development (OMED)
eLearning for Medical Educators (eLME) is under development as a mechanism to provide professional learning in medical education to anyone, anytime, anywhere. The project began in 2016 at the Office for Medical Educator Development within the UNM School of Medicine in order to support community faculty who host medical students and residents at their clinics. eLME was planned with numerous stakeholders using the Kirkpatrick Business Partnership Model. Two modules were delivered in early 2017 and include a combination of self-reflection, interactive multimedia, and assessment.
