Health Outcomes And Mitigation Strategies, Rajan Bishwakarma Jan 2018

Health Outcomes And Mitigation Strategies, Rajan Bishwakarma

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper examines how exposure to the extreme temperature in-utero effects the health of children later in life using a Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey of Nepal. Using a nationally representative sample of 4951 children under the age of 5 years, I employ ordinary least square method to estimate the effect of extreme temperature on height-for-age of the children. The extreme temperature in-utero is an indicator variable, which is equal to 1 if the monthly mean of the daily maximum temperature is greater than 2 standard deviations. Prior work has identified that extreme temperature exposure has a detectable negative contribution in …

A Case Of Negative Externality: Use Of Pesticide And Its Impact On Health Among Farmers In Salumbhu Village, Nepal, Mohammad Mashiur Rahman, Soumi Roy Choudhury, Alok Bohara

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Agriculture is the major contributor of the economy for developing countries. In the process of mass level Agric-production, there is a necessity of using pesticides to increase the net yield for the farmers. The widespread and uncontrolled use of harmful pesticide creates influential negative externalities ranging from environmental degradation to the health status of the farmers. This study investigates the effect of using pesticide on different health symptoms experienced by the farmers from a primary survey data in Salumbhu, a village in Nepal. A total of 6 health symptoms were considered among the farmers those who are the applicator of …

The Stressor In Adolescence Of Menstruation: Economic Analysis Of Effective Coping Strategies, Siobhan K. Yilmaz, Alok K. Bohara, Swati Thapa

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Adolescents are slowly being recognized as a generation, worldwide, that may require different policy approaches to aid in improving their health and wellbeing. Much anecdotal evidence exists from surveys and interviews that girls throughout the developing world face many hardships with menstruation due to a number of constraints, many of which result in poor emotional wellbeing Most of the research, up to this point, has consisted of purely qualitative analysis or at best, correlational evidence of linkages between girls’ background and their likelihood to practice good hygiene. This work, grounded in the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, evaluates the …

A Sketch Of Consciousness Space Beyond Freudian Mental Model And Implications To Socio-Economics Modeling And Integrative Cancer Therapy, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we give an outline of an ongoing study to go beyond Freudian mental archetypal model. First, we discuss the essence of numerous problems that we suffer in our sophisticated and modernized society. Then we discuss possibility to reintroduce spirit into human consciousness. While we are aware that much remain to be done and we admit that this is only a sketch, we hope that this paper will start a fresh approach of research towards more realistic nonlinear consciousness model with wide ranging implications to socio-economic modeling and also integrative cancer therapy. At the last section we also …

Below-Knee Amputations: A Review, Erika L. Garbrecht

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

At our institution, physicians from the orthopaedic department perform a considerable proportion of below-knee amputations. These amputations are performed to treat non-traumatic and traumatic injuries. However, the outcomes of amputation are not discussed as often in our educational experience as those of other procedures. The current review examines the current and relevant studies for indications and outcomes of patients with non-traumatic and traumatic conditions treated with below-knee amputations.

Midterm Results Of An Anatomical Radial Head Arthroplasty For Treating Fractures And Degenerative Joint Diseases Of The Radial Head, Gabriel Pertierra, Lauren L. Vernon, Francisco Rubio Jan 2018

Midterm Results Of An Anatomical Radial Head Arthroplasty For Treating Fractures And Degenerative Joint Diseases Of The Radial Head, Gabriel Pertierra, Lauren L. Vernon, Francisco Rubio

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Background: Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) is typically performed to restore elbow stability or function in patients with fractures or degenerative joint diseases. The procedure requires a specific operating technique to avoid complications such as overstuffing, capitellar erosion, stiffness, instability, micro motion, and loosening. It is difficult to restore native radial head function reliably.

Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 45 patients who underwent radial head arthroplasty using the ALIGN radial head implant (ALIGN Radial Head System, Skeletal Dynamics, Miami, FL) at our institution. A total of 15 patients met inclusion criteria and were contacted to complete a QuickDASH questionnaire, …

Chronic Tenosynovitis Caused By Mycobacterium Avium-Intracellulare Of The Flexor Tendons In A 65-Year-Old Man: A Case Report, Kourosh M. Kolahi, Moheb S. Moneim

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

We report a rare case of Mycobacterium aviumintracellulare flexor tenosynovitis in the hand of a 65-year-old man. The patient reported no history of penetrating trauma but was an avid gardener and presented nearly 2 years after the onset of symptoms. Our case highlights the difficulty in diagnosing mycobacterial infections owing to their lack of classic clinical and laboratory findings. Our patient underwent successful surgical debridement followed by oral antibiotic therapy, initiated 4 weeks after the culture was positive for a slow-growing organism.

Brachial Artery Vasculitis And Associated Stenosis Presenting As Elbow Pain In A 16-Year-Old Soccer Player: A Case Report, Eric R. Reynolds, Andrew D. Ashbaugh, James P. Toldi, Deana M. Mercer, Mark Langsfeld, Christopher A. Mcgrew Jan 2018

Mcgrew

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Chronic vascular occlusion in the upper extremity can result from repetitive trauma, atherosclerosis, proximal embolic events, hypercoagulable states, and systemic diseases such as collagen vascular disease and vasculitis. Considerable functional impairment can result from these maladies; however, sometimes the condition develops slowly with minimal effect on the patient. We describe a 16-year-old soccer player with slow-progressing elbow pain and loss of range in motion caused by brachial artery vasculitis and resultant brachial arterial stenosis. Although vascular insults and lesions rarely cause chronic vascular occlusion, physicians should consider this possibility in patients with localized pain or atrophy, especially if the condition …

On The Efficacy Of High-Dose Ascorbic Acid As Anticancer Treatment: A Literature Survey, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto Jan 2018

On The Efficacy Of High-Dose Ascorbic Acid As Anticancer Treatment: A Literature Survey, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, ascorbate) has a controversial history in cancer treatment. Emerging evidence indicates that ascorbate in cancer treatment deserves re-examination. As research results concerning ascorbate pharmacokinetics and its mechanisms of action against tumor cells have been published, and as evidence from case studies has continued to mount that ascorbate therapy could be effective if the right protocols were used, interest among physicians and scientists has increased.

New Mexico’S Renewable Portfolio Standard: Analysis Of Existing Policy Design Elements And Compliance Obligations Beyond 2020, Gabriel Pacyniak Jan 2018

New Mexico’S Renewable Portfolio Standard: Analysis Of Existing Policy Design Elements And Compliance Obligations Beyond 2020, Gabriel Pacyniak

Faculty Scholarship

This white paper analyzes two elements of New Mexico’s current Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) in advance of the state legislature’s consideration of an RPS expansion in the 2019 legislative session. First, the paper surveys key policy design elements of the current RPS, compares those elements to other state RPSs, and identifies “policy considerations” that may inform legislative or regulatory action. Among the findings from this part of the analysis are that: 1) other states have set much higher RPS targets; 2) that New Mexico’s RPS has uniquely restrictive cost-containment measures that limit cost impacts but also prohibit the full RPS …

Emerging From The Smoke: Does An Employer Have A Duty To Accommodate An Employee’S Medical Marijuana Use After Garcia V. Tractor Supply Company?, LucíA Moran

New Mexico Law Review

Many states have chosen to legalize medical marijuana despite the fact that marijuana remains classified as an illegal substance federally. Of the states that have legalized medical marijuana, about half have extended “anti-discrimination” protections to workers who are prescribed medical marijuana and who use it outside of the workplace. In New Mexico, such protections do not yet exist. Thus, there is no clear answer about whether an employer has a duty to accommodate a worker’s medical marijuana use under the Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act and the New Mexico Human Rights Act. This article argues that after analyzing the …

Role Of Acid-Sensing Ion Channels In Hypoxia- And Hypercapnia-Induced Ventilatory Responses, Neil D. Detweiler, Kenneth Vigil, Thomas C. Resta, Benjimen R. Walker, Nikki L. Jernigan Jan 2018

Role Of Acid-Sensing Ion Channels In Hypoxia- And Hypercapnia-Induced Ventilatory Responses, Neil D. Detweiler, Kenneth Vigil, Thomas C. Resta, Benjimen R. Walker, Nikki L. Jernigan

Cell Biology and Physiology Research and Scholarship

Previous reports indicate roles for acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) in both peripheral and central chemoreception, but the contributions of ASICs to ventilatory drive in conscious, unrestrained animals remain largely unknown. We tested the hypotheses that ASICs contribute to hypoxic- and hypercapnic-ventilatory responses. Blood samples taken from conscious, unrestrained mice chronically instrumented with femoral artery catheters were used to assess arterial O2, CO2, and pH levels during exposure to inspired gas mixtures designed to cause isocapnic hypoxemia or hypercapnia. Whole-body plethysmography was used to monitor ventilatory parameters in conscious, unrestrained ASIC1, ASIC2, or ASIC3 knockout (-/- …
