Predictors In Finishing Position Of Ncaa Division Ii Schools In The Learfield Sports-Nacda Directors’ Cup: Culture Type As A Potential Mediator, Ryan D. Kettler
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Predictor variables, institution type and annual allocated revenue, were investigated as potential predictors of success in NCAA Division II Athletic Departments, on the outcome variable (points scored in the Learfield sports-NACDA Directors’ Cup), working through mediating variables representing culture type (clan, adhocracy, market, and hierarchy). Data were collected through an electronic survey emailed to all NCAA Division II institution athletic directors and head coaches. Data specific to institution type (public vs private) and the number of points an athletic department earned in the Learfield sports-NACDA Directors’ Cup was also collected from archived records. Statistical testing included the use of SPSS …
Fatigue Crack Modeling Of Additively Manufactured Abs Cantilever Beam, Jason W. Booher
Fatigue Crack Modeling Of Additively Manufactured Abs Cantilever Beam, Jason W. Booher
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
A Finite Element model was developed to model crack development in additively manufactured additively manufactured Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) cantilever beams. Experiments were conducted on the beams with both shock and random vibration base excitations. The base excitations induced damage in the beam that cause crack propagation. It was observed during the cracks developmental stages that an increase in damping occurred. The proposed Finite Element model also showed similar increases in damping from the addition of Coulomb damping forces.

Associations Among Desirability Of First Sexual Experience, Sexual Risk-Taking Behaviors And Attitudes, And Substance Use In Justice-Involved Male Adolescents, Ryan S. Ross
Psychology ETDs
Justice-involved adolescents are particularly vulnerable to engaging in risky sex and developing substance use disorders. Given these negative sequelae, identifying risk factors that place these adolescents at increased risk and potentially influence changes over time is important. Data from 347 justice-involved male adolescents was used for the current study. Participants completed baseline assessments of adverse childhood experiences, impulsivity, sociosexuality, substance use histories, and sexual histories, as well as 3, 6, 9, and 12-month assessments of sexual risk taking and alcohol/marijuana problems.
Structural equational modeling (SEM) was used to examine the influence of impulsivity, adverse childhood experiences, and desirability of first …

An Integrated Approach To Studying And Engineering Bacterial Type Ii Polyketide Core Structure Biosynthesis, Xuechen Zhu
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Natural products including alkaloids, phenylpropanoids, polyketides, terpenoids and antibiotics provide abundant resources for drugs and drug leads. Type II polyketides (PK-IIs) are a large array of aromatic polyketides that have exhibited various bioactivities including anti-tumor, anti-cancer, anti-fungal and anti-bacteria. Based on the lengths of carbon chains and the cyclization patterns in their core structures, most bacterial PK-IIs have been classified into 6 typical classes: benzoisochromanequinone (BIQ), anthracycline (ANT), angucycline (ANG), tetracycline (TET), tetracenomycin (TCM) and pentangular (PEN). Bioengineering for diversification of PK-II core structures will generate libraries of bioactivities, which can serve the drug discovery in this family of compounds. …

This study used teleconferencing technology to connect healthcare professionals across multiple settings and disciplines in real-time clinics, based on the Project ECHO© model. This paper reports the evaluation of the clinics by physicians, nurses and HCAs, including their knowledge and self-efficacy in pain assessment and management for patients with advanced and end-stage …
Drama As Dream: Sophoclean Tragedy And The Cult Of Asclepius, Molly C. Mata
Drama As Dream: Sophoclean Tragedy And The Cult Of Asclepius, Molly C. Mata
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This thesis explores tragic drama as a corresponding ritual to the incubation ritual in the cult of Asclepius and theorizes that this ritual is psychologically cathartic and healing. I argue that in Ajax and Philoctetes, Sophocles marks this cathartic ritual through nosological language, setting, and social context. In my first chapter, I explore Sophocles’ use of the language of madness (mania) and illness (nosos) in Ajax to show the exacerbation of the audience’s psychological state. Next, I show that catharsis is achieved through the negotiation and subsequent burial of Ajax. In my second chapter, I argue that Sophocles uses both …
Negotiation And The Construction Of Intimacy In The Letters Between Fronto And Marcus Aurelius, Sarah C. Keith
Negotiation And The Construction Of Intimacy In The Letters Between Fronto And Marcus Aurelius, Sarah C. Keith
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
This project analyzes the letters between Marcus Cornelius Fronto and his student Marcus Aurelius as works of literature, rather than merely sites for historical mining. The letters, I argue, contain carefully constructed tropes of rhetoric and feature intentional polish that serve as opportunities for discussion about the virtues of philosophy and rhetoric during the Second Sophistic. Topics of discussions between both parties range between the imagery of sleep, and intimate spaces, like bedrooms, to substantive allusions to Plato’s philosophy and his dialogue Phaedrus. By looking beyond the identification of concrete names and dates to the literary, referential, and personal world …
Federalism And The State Police Power: Why Immigration And Customs Enforcement Must Stay Away From State Courthouses, George Bach
Federalism And The State Police Power: Why Immigration And Customs Enforcement Must Stay Away From State Courthouses, George Bach
Faculty Scholarship
The Trump Administration’s rhetoric and increased immigration enforcement actions have raised the level of fear in immigrant communities. The increased enforcement has included having United States Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents appear at state and local courthouses to detain undocumented immigrants when they arrive for court. This presence has had an adverse effect on domestic violence victims who are immigrants, as they fear encountering immigrations officials at the courthouse. In El Paso, for example, agents detained a woman who was bringing a case of domestic violence against her abuser. There were claims that ICE was tipped off about the …

An Update And Analysis Of The Corrales Bosque Preserve Vegetation Map, Brett Feldhahn
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
An updated vegetation map of the Corrales Bosque Preserve in Corrales, New Mexico was developed for this project using Hink and Ohmart community-structure survey protocol and vegetation classifications. The vegetation composition was analyzed and compared to the Middle Rio Grande Conservation Action Plan (MRG-CAP) rating criteria for dynamic mosaic vegetation, also known as the Dynamic Patch Mosaic (DPM). The DPM attribute indicates the mix of vegetation community types—the vegetation mosaic—that facilitates the best outcome for ecosystem resilience and biodiversity in the bosque. The updated vegetation community-structure types were used to classify each polygon into general vegetation types per the MRG-CAP, …

This essay sketches an arc from my childhood to being an Harvard Law School student to my academic work and professional commitments as a law professor and an alumna of Harvard Law School, working to increase access and success in the legal and medical professions for students and faculty of color. I compare aspects of legal and medical education using demographic data as well as some observations about how diverse faculty have transformed the two professions in their respective approaches to and rationales for diversifying the professions and examine the work being done by diverse faculty in law and health. …
Water Planning, Tribal Voices, And Creative Approaches: Seeking New Paths Through Tribal-State Water Conflict By Collaboration On State Water Planning Efforts, Stephen H. Greetham
Water Planning, Tribal Voices, And Creative Approaches: Seeking New Paths Through Tribal-State Water Conflict By Collaboration On State Water Planning Efforts, Stephen H. Greetham
Natural Resources Journal
More than a century after the Supreme Court issued its foundational Indian water law cases, only a handful of American Indian tribes have secured decrees or settlements of legally enforceable water rights. Efforts to resolve tribal water claims are typically hampered by legal and factual complexities as well as the equitable and political legacy of the United States’ western expansion. Meanwhile, those difficulties notwithstanding, planners are refining their methodologies and rising to new challenges our water resource management systems now face (e.g., climate variability, aging infrastructure, changing use-value priorities, etc.). Signaling a departure from exclusive reliance on formal dispute resolution …

New Mexico Tribal Cannabis: Policy, Politics, & Guidance For Government-To-Government Cooperation In State-Tribal Cannabis Compacting, Matthew Ramírez
Natural Resources Journal
The purpose of this article is three-fold. First, it aims to provide a systematic review of international, United States, state, and federal Indian law and policy surrounding cannabis cultivation, possession, and use in Indian Country. Second, it argues that the 2017 New Mexico tribal medical cannabis bills (SB 345 & HB 348), which were introduced in the first regular session of the New Mexico State Legislature and would have permitted the state to enter into intergovernmental agreements (or compacts) with tribes who choose to implement the state’s medical cannabis program on tribal lands, contained legal vulnerabilities likely to hinder their …

Human Rights And The Global Climate Change Regime, Atieno Mboya Samandari
Human Rights And The Global Climate Change Regime, Atieno Mboya Samandari
Natural Resources Journal
This article discusses human rights implications of the market-based mechanisms operationalized under the global climate change regime. It examines greenhouse gas emissions rights created by the Kyoto Protocol and continued by the Paris Agreement. This article discusses implications of these rights for the protection and realization of human rights in the wake of climate change and argues that greenhouse gas emissions rights, as currently constituted, are incompatible with human rights protections. While the Paris Agreement’s recognition of human rights is a significant development, the protection and realization of human rights by states under a free-market approach to climate change remains …
Alchemical Rulemaking And Ideological Framing: Lessons From The 40-Year Battle To Regulate Mercury Emissions From Electric Power Plants, Andrew Carter
Alchemical Rulemaking And Ideological Framing: Lessons From The 40-Year Battle To Regulate Mercury Emissions From Electric Power Plants, Andrew Carter
Natural Resources Journal
Environmental mercury has long been linked to adverse health impacts on human populations. Globally ubiquitous at ambient levels in air and water, it can reach potentially unsafe levels in fish as it biologically magnifies and accumulates through aquatic and marine food webs. Vulnerable communities, including many communities of color, are particularly at risk from fish-borne mercury. Despite the fact that coal-fired electric generating units have been recognized as major sources of environmental mercury since the 1970s, and that the Environmental Protection Agency discussed possible future regulations of mercury emissions from such plants in 1975, it was not until 2014 that …
A Lot To Digest: Advancing Food Waste Policy In The United States, Alexandra Evans, Robin Nagele
A Lot To Digest: Advancing Food Waste Policy In The United States, Alexandra Evans, Robin Nagele
Natural Resources Journal
An estimated thirty-one percent of the food grown, produced, and transported in the United States is wasted annually. This waste translates into ninety-six billion pounds of food and $165 billion in lost economic value. Food waste occurs at all phases of the supply chain, stretching from farm to table, and imposes substantial economic, environmental, and social costs. This Article highlights the staggering quantity of food waste in the United States and argues that certain innovative policies and market-based initiatives that strategically target the most egregious and unjustifiable types of food waste can efficiently reduce this problem. Applying a simple cost-benefit …

Development Of A Novel Framework For The Application Of Signature Based Safeguards (Sbs) To Pyroprocessing, Philip Leo Lafreniere
Development Of A Novel Framework For The Application Of Signature Based Safeguards (Sbs) To Pyroprocessing, Philip Leo Lafreniere
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
Traditional nuclear material accountancy (NMA) faces several challenges when applied to pyroprocessing facilities. To address these challenges, alternative methods of safeguarding nuclear material are being developed. One method is process monitoring (PM). PM involves taking operational process data and applying it to safeguards using an advanced framework. Signature Based Safeguards (SBS), a proposed PM framework, involves the identification of anomalous scenarios and the subsequent identification and detection of their respective PM signatures from a system of measurements. SBS has previously focused on failure modes that result in transfer of mass to unexpected places in the mass flowsheet. This work developed …
