Thepainlesspush.Com: Development Of A Bilingual Patient Education Website About Pain Relief Options In Labor, Lauren Faber, Kylee Greider, Katherine M. Seligman

HSC Education Days

The Painless Push (www.thepainlesspush.com) was created to provide patients up-to-date, scientifically accurate information about pain relief options for labor and delivery. Estimates report that 46% of New Mexico’s population is functionally illiterate. These individuals may fail to identify a sales receipt total or information in an article, which makes providing patient educational material (PEM) challenging. 28.7% of the population reports Spanish as their primary language. Our goal was to provide scientifically accurate information in English and Spanish that serves limited-literacy individuals. Previous recommendations suggest PEM be written at a 6th grade level, but readability scores can be inflated by medical …

Gender Differences In Internal Medicine Grand Rounds - Speakers At A Local Academic Hospital, Parisa Mortaji, Eileen Barrett Sep 2018

Gender Differences In Internal Medicine Grand Rounds - Speakers At A Local Academic Hospital, Parisa Mortaji, Eileen Barrett

HSC Education Days

Despite increasing numbers of female medical students and junior physicians in America, women are still underrepresented in leadership in medicine. Many theories have been proposed to explain this, and gender bias has been shown to be a contributing factor. Within academic hospitals, grand rounds provides an opportunity for dissemination of clinical knowledge. Exposure to female presenters is thus critical to allow for female trainees to establish relationships and witness role modeling opportunities. The aim of this study is to assess whether gender differences exist in Internal Medicine grand rounds presenters at an academic hospital. We hypothesize that the proportion of …

A Partnership Between The Graduate Resource Center And College Of Nursing, Stephanie Sanchez, Heidi Rogers

HSC Education Days

As nursing professionals returning to school to pursue an advanced degree in nursing (MSN), academic writing can be a new skill that is unfamiliar to students even as they are expected to have mastered this skill prior to entering a graduate program. In Fall 2017, the College of Nursing and the Graduate Resource Center partnered to provide MSN students with writing interventions to help bridge the gap between skill level and expectations. These interventions included an online writing course, a comprehensive writing workshop based on faculty feedback that was offered during orientation and submitting a writing assignment for review through …

Mental Health In Medical School:Students Share Their Stories, Jessie Medina, Elizabeth Lawrence Sep 2018

Mental Health In Medical School:Students Share Their Stories, Jessie Medina, Elizabeth Lawrence

HSC Education Days

This project was inspired by the suicide of a PGY II Internal Medicine resident. Medical students, residents, and physicians are reluctant to disclose or seek help for their own mental health concerns.Physicians and trainees suffer in silence because of the fear of being stigmatized, concerns about medical licensing and credentialing, and the challenges of accessing confidential care. In the aftermath of our colleagues’ suicide, we were motivated to provide a forum for students to discuss their personal struggles with mental illness. Although matriculating medical students are less depressed, less burned out, and have higher quality of life scores than their …

Facilitating A Resident-Run Journal Club: Fostering Autonomy Within A Time-Honored Tradition, Taylor Goot, Charles Pizanis, Eileen Barrett

HSC Education Days

Journal club is a time club is a time-honored tradition in medicine, and participation can increase knowledge and critical appraisal skills in trainees. Given the rapid pace at which medical knowledge changes, journal club can also help physicians keep abreast of current innovations. Best practices have been proposed for journal club, although UNM medical educators report variable attendance and engagement at journal club, and UNM trainees report varying relevance of journal club. Additionally, semi-structured peer interactions can decrease professional isolation and burnout.

Comparison Of A Flipped Classroom To A Traditional Format In A Critical Care Curriculum, Erik Kraai, Shozab Ahmed, Benjamin Deaton, Tyler Shackelford, Michel Boivin

HSC Education Days

Medical education has seen a paradigm shift away from traditional lecture-based teaching towards learner-centered strategies such as problem-based learning and the flipped classroom. The intensive care unit (ICU) poses unique challenges as a learning environment and teaching is complicated by high clinical demands, duty hour restrictions, and unpredictable schedules. The flipped or inverted classroom utilizes pre-class videos to deliver content to the learner prior to in-class sessions that apply fundamental concepts. The potential benefits of the flipped classroom method include the ability of learners to learn new material at their own pace outside the classroom and to engage in active …

A Biomechanical Comparison Of A Low-Profile Mesh Plate Contrasted With Tension Band Wiring Treatment Of Olecranon Fractures And Osteotomies, Jasmin Regalado

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Olecranon fractures are common upper extremity injuries caused by direct trauma to the elbow. Open reduction and internal fixation is the current standard for olecranon fractures that exceed a 2 mm fragment displacement. The tension band wire (TBW) technique is the current standard of care for treating olecranon fractures due to its positive clinical results. However, the complication rate due to prominent hardware is reported to be upwards of 50\%. This research aims to biomechanically test and compare the stiffness and fracture gap of the traditional TBW technique to a low-profile titanium mesh plate (TMP) for chevron-type fractures and osteotomies …

Role Of Caregiver-Reported Outcomes In Identification Of Children With Prenatal Alcohol Exposure During The First Year Of Life, Ludmila N Bakhireva, Jean Lowe, Laura M Garrison, Sandra Cano, Yuridia Leyva, Fares Qeadan, Julia M Stephen

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Earlier identification of children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) remains a challenge. The objective of this study was to identify neurobehavioral (NB) outcomes associated with PAE in infants.

METHODS: This manuscript evaluates NB outcomes at 6.33±1.12 months of age in 93 infants (39 PAE and 54 No-PAE) recruited prospectively into the ENRICH cohort. PAE was assessed by prospective repeated TLFB interviews and a panel of ethanol biomarkers. NB outcomes were evaluated by the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-III), Parenting Stress Index (PSI), Infant Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ-R), and Infant Sensory Profile (ISP).

RESULTS: Mean maternal age at enrollment was …

I Am My Hair, And My Hair Is Me: #Blackgirlmagic In Lis, Teresa Y. Neely Phd

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Chapter 5 in Pushing the Margins: Women of Color and Intersectionality in LIS. Using intersectionality as a framework, this edited collection explores the experiences of women of color in library and information science (LIS). With roots in black feminism and critical race theory, intersectionality studies the ways in which multiple social and cultural identities impact individual experience. Libraries and archives idealistically portray themselves as egalitarian and neutral entities that provide information equally to everyone, yet these institutions often reflect and perpetuate societal racism, sexism, and additional forms of oppression. Women of color who work in LIS are often placed in …

Potable Water Reuse In Albuquerque, Nm: A Large Scale Community Survey To Understand Public Perceptions And The Impact Of Educational Materials On Acceptance, Lauren Nicole Distler

Architecture and Planning ETDs

In New Mexico and much of the American Southwest, ensuring clean, reliable, and sustainable drinking water supplies is one of the most significant planning challenges. One option to create more diverse and reliable water supplies is potable water reuse. There are two types of potable water reuse: indirect and direct potable reuse (IPR and DPR). Planned potable water reuse has not been widely implemented, largely due to negative public perceptions. This research involves the design and implementation of a large-scale survey administered to a sample of 4,000 water utility customers in Albuquerque, NM, to examine public acceptance of potable water …
