An Autoethnography Of A Registered Nurse Living With Chronic Undiagnosed Illness, Frances M. Ricker Jul 2020

An Autoethnography Of A Registered Nurse Living With Chronic Undiagnosed Illness, Frances M. Ricker

Nursing ETDs

Abstract

This autoethnographic study examines a registered nurse’s experience living with chronic undiagnosed illness. The number living with undiagnosed illness is unknown and little is understood about living with chronic undiagnosed illness.

This analytic autoethnography (Anderson, 2006) used multiple data sources: my journal, medical history narrative, and artifacts including my handwork, examples of my father’s handwriting, and family photographs. Narrative analysis, thematic analysis, and visual analysis were conducted.

My experience of living with chronic undiagnosed illness was characterized by three themes that reinforced isolation: not knowing, loss, and hidden secret self. Family context evidenced diverse themes of not being believed, …

Identifying, Understanding And Combating Complex Inequality: The Fight To Make The Invisible, Visible, Rachel Whitt Jul 2020

Identifying, Understanding And Combating Complex Inequality: The Fight To Make The Invisible, Visible, Rachel Whitt

Black History at UNM

Dr. Nancy López, professor of sociology at UNM and director of the Institute for the Study of “Race” and Social Justice, explains the role of complex inequality in fueling social unrest. Complex inequality is rooted in decades of disparities towards minorities, particularly Blacks, Latinx, people of color and Native American communities. López outlines how invisible, deeply embedded injustices are common practice in the United States citing research that shows there are compounding challenges facing marginalized communities. These hurdles are multifaceted and cannot be distilled down to single data points. Recognizing the experience of marginality is layered and must be viewed …

An Improved Method For Spectroscopic Quality Classification, Elizabeth G. Mayer Jul 2020

An Improved Method For Spectroscopic Quality Classification, Elizabeth G. Mayer

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Spectral quality classification is a vital step in data cleaning before the

analysis of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) data can be done. This

analysis compares five methods of quality classification; three of these are

legacy methods, Maudsley et al. (2006), Zhang et al. (2018), and

Bustillo et al. (2020), and two newly created methods that used a random forests

classifier (RFC) to inform their classifications. We found that the random forest

classifier was the most accurate at predicting spectra quality (balanced

accuracy for RF of 88% vs legacy of 70%, 72%, or 72%). A

Random-Forests-Informed Filtering method (RFIFM) for quality …

Socioeconomic And Neuroanatomic Contributions To Language Performance In Children Born Very Preterm At Preschool And School Age, Rebecca E. Avila-Rieger Jul 2020

Socioeconomic And Neuroanatomic Contributions To Language Performance In Children Born Very Preterm At Preschool And School Age, Rebecca E. Avila-Rieger

Psychology ETDs

Background: Children born very preterm are more likely to have difficulties with language acquisition and use that persist throughout childhood. Preterm birth occurs at a critical time in brain development and interrupts neurodevelopment, which has downstream implications for altered neural structure and function. Prematurity and socioeconomic status greatly impact language performance in children, but the neural substrates are poorly understood. Here the neural constituents of language performance are examined in select cortical and subcortical regions.

Methods: Fifty-one children born preterm (24-31 weeks) and 20 born full-term were seen at preschool (mean age = 47 months) and school age (mean age …

OBJECTIVES: Management of colorectal cancer warrants mutational analysis of KRAS/NRAS when considering anti-epidermal growth factor receptor therapy and BRAF testing for prognostic stratification. In this multicenter study, we compared a fully integrated, cartridge-based system to standard-of-care assays used by participating laboratories.

METHODS: Twenty laboratories enrolled 874 colorectal cancer cases between November 2017 and December 2018. Testing was performed on the Idylla automated system (Biocartis) using the KRAS and NRAS-BRAF cartridges (research use only) and results compared with in-house standard-of-care testing methods.

RESULTS: There were sufficient data on 780 cases to measure turnaround time compared with standard assays. In-house polymerase chain …

Subjective Cognitive Complaints, Affective Distress, And Objective Cognitive Performance In Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Brandi Seaman Jul 2020

Subjective Cognitive Complaints, Affective Distress, And Objective Cognitive Performance In Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Brandi Seaman

Psychology ETDs

Background: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among adults in the US (Ma, Chan, & Carruthers, 2014; Raj et al., 2015). According to epidemiological estimates put forth by the CDC, of the 1.7 million TBIs that occur annually in the United States, 80% are mild TBI (mTBI) (Ma, Chan, & Carruthers, 2014). At the sub-acute stage, mTBI patients often report experiencing post-concussion symptoms that include somatic (nausea, headache, dizziness), cognitive (poor attention, memory, and executive function), and behavioral or emotional changes (irritability, depression, emotional lability, anxiety) following their injury (Levin & Diza-Arrastia, 2015).

Intersectionality Between Sex/Gender And Race/Ethnicity On Cognitive Trajectories And Development Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Justina Frances Avila-Rieger

Psychology ETDs

The current study examined the interactive effects of race/ethnicity and sex/gender on cognitive trajectories of older adults. Participants were a total of 5258 non-Hispanic White (NHW), Black, and Hispanic men and women in the Washington/Hamilton Heights/Inwood Columbia Aging Project. Multiple-group latent growth curve modeling was used to examine trajectories across sex/gender by racial/ethnic groups and to determine the relationship between specific socio-cultural/health indicators and cognitive decline, including childhood socioeconomic position, years of education, adult income and occupation, cardiovascular risk factors, and marital status. Sex/gender differences in baseline cognitive test performance varied as a function of race/ethnicity and racial/ethnic differences in …

Modeling Sars-Cov-2 Positivity Using Laboratory Data: Timing Is Everything, Thor Larson, Karissa Culbreath, Dennis Chavez, Richard Larson, Michael Crossey, David G. Grenache

Pathology Research and Scholarship

As the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 spreads across the globe, there is intense scrutiny placed on the clinical laboratory tests used to identify infected individuals. Apart from the analytical and clinical performance characteristics of these real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rtRT-PCR) tests for the qualitative detection of the viral RNA, much attention is given to the number of positive cases reported by public health authorities each day. As it pertains to the current Lab 2.0 movement (1,2), there has never been a more clear example of the value of the laboratory in not only diagnostics and …

Supporting Adequate Sleep In Patients Hospitalized With Psychiatric Illness Through A Nurse-Driven Protocol, Mary Perez

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Sleep is growing in recognition for its part in overall health. Sleep is essential to optimal functioning in all people. Its link to psychiatric illness makes it especially important to those in recovery. As we learn more about sleep and its effects, it is important for nurses and nurse leaders to become more acquainted with how sleep affects health and what can be done to initiate good sleep. Since sleep is complex and supporting sleep must be individualized to each person, having a good understanding of both subjects is necessary. Sleep hygiene is a set of environmental and behavioral interventions …

The Role Of Regulatory Agencies In The Frequency And Occurrence Of Health-Based Violations At Public Water Systems In The United States, Rose Afandi Jul 2020

The Role Of Regulatory Agencies In The Frequency And Occurrence Of Health-Based Violations At Public Water Systems In The United States, Rose Afandi

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was implemented in the United States (U.S.) in 1974 for the purpose of protecting consumers from water contaminants. The Federal government gave the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to delegate the responsibility of ensuring that States, Sovereign Nations and U.S. territories meet specific requirements upon being granted primacy to regulate all public water systems (PWSs) in their jurisdiction. An examination of seven years (2013-2019) of SDWA compliance data from all PWSs in the U.S. revealed trends within various categories of regulating agencies that could create disparities in how water systems are regulated. Analyses …

Factors Affecting A Riparian Cottonwood Stand Die-Off Along The Rio Grande Pueblo Of Santa Ana New Mexico, Usa, Hannah A. Varani

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Negative effects of river control include altered sediment and biotic processes, leading to channel incision and discordance between water delivery and the evolved physiology of seed dispersal. In forests where tree regeneration is inhibited due to such altered processes, tree mortality is of utmost importance guiding forest management. I compared cottonwood ring-widths between adjacent live and dead forest patches in a nested plot design along the regulated Rio Grande, New Mexico. Particle size in the associated sediments, competition, and age were analyzed as contributing factors. The entire stand had declining growth between 2002 and 2015. Tree growth correlated strongest with …
