2022 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Purpose: Delayed diagnosis of pediatric sepsis increases morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. Specific interventions, such as a sepsis screening tool, sepsis huddles, and sepsis management pathway and continuous quality improvement (QI)-based reviews have been shown to decrease time to treatment and mortality. When this project was designed, UNMH did not have any of these interventions in place. This QI project aims to: 1) implement a sepsis screening huddle within 20 minutes when pediatric patients meet a clinical trigger based on vital signs; 2) ensure patients who screen positive for sepsis receive antibiotics within 3 hours; and 3) ensure that patients …

2022 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States and New Mexico. Excess weight early in life progressively increases risks of severe health complications in adulthood. Healthy and Fit Children’s Clinic (H&FCC) at Carrie Tingley Outpatient Children’s Clinic treats children ages 2-17 years old with elevated body mass index (BMI; ≥85th percentile). Providers work to lower children’s BMI and risks for chronic cardiometabolic comorbid conditions through lifestyle changes. Successful weight management requires a comprehensive treatment plan including social determinants of health (SDoH) assessment. One key SDoH is food insecurity. H&FCC serves vulnerable populations. Providers are anecdotally aware of patients’ …

The Impact Of Coronavirus Disease 2019 On Maternal And Infant Characteristics In New Mexico, Hellen Ko, Katie Baille, Orrin Myers, Jessie R. Maxwell
2022 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Introduction:
Illnesses caused by coronaviruses have previously been shown to affect maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been shown to affect vasculature including placental changes. As significant remodeling of the placenta occurs at the end of the first trimester into the second trimester, insults during this crucial period could affect placental functionality, with impact on fetal growth and well-being. Thus, we explored the relationship between antenatally-acquired maternal COVID-19 infection and birth characteristics.
Methods:
A retrospective chart review was completed using the University of New Mexico electronic medical record system. ICD-10 codes were used to identify …
Investigating The Impact Of Skin To Skin Care On Preterm Infant Heart Rate Variability, Erin Swieter, Julia Stephen, Jessie R. Maxwell, Kristi Watterberg
Investigating The Impact Of Skin To Skin Care On Preterm Infant Heart Rate Variability, Erin Swieter, Julia Stephen, Jessie R. Maxwell, Kristi Watterberg
2022 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Background: Skin-to-skin care (the intermittent placement of a diaper-clad infant on a caretaker’s chest to enhance attachment and parental self-esteem), is a common occurrence in most newborn intensive care units (NICUs). Skin-to-skin care has been shown to be safe for preterm infants, independent of respiratory support. Heart rate variability (HRV), the temporal variation between consecutive heart beats, provides a measure of the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. HRV increases with gestational age and changes in HRV are associated with various clinical conditions. Therefore, measuring heart rate variability may be useful in capturing clinical dynamic changes in autonomic regulation …
Utility Of Laboratory Screening For Inherited Thrombophilia In The Acute Setting For Hospitalized Pediatric Patients, Ella Dolan, Jason Koury, Shirley Abraham
Utility Of Laboratory Screening For Inherited Thrombophilia In The Acute Setting For Hospitalized Pediatric Patients, Ella Dolan, Jason Koury, Shirley Abraham
2022 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Background: Pediatric patients with thromboembolic events (TEEs) often undergo testing for inherited thrombophilia disorders,1 including anti-thrombin III deficiency, Factor V Leiden mutation, prothrombin 20210 mutation, protein C deficiency, and protein S deficiency. While some data suggests testing for these disorders in all pediatric patients with a confirmed thrombosis,2 there is increasing evidence that this often does not result in meaningful changes in management1,3,4 and may not be cost effective.1 Another group suggests a stepwise testing algorithm to optimize diagnosis while preventing excessive testing.5 Our study will evaluate the rate of testing that results in diagnosis and management changes and explore …

2022 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) globally leads blood-borne infections with an increase associated with the opioid epidemic. Recommendations call for testing of HCV-exposed infants via antibody screens or RNA testing after 18 and 2 months of age, respectively, but studies show low compliance. We hypothesize that many women with HCV do not receive proper screening during pregnancy resulting in infant-care gaps. We seek to identify factors associated with suboptimal pediatric HCV screening. Methods: A retrospective chart review was completed using data from Tricore Laboratories. We assessed the yearly proportion of HCV in pregnant women who were tested from 2014-2019 at …

Objective: Maternal hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has increased by 400%, which has led to increased prevalence of HCV infection in children, with 5 to 10% of newborns of mothers with HCV being infected. Suboptimal HCV screening rates and diagnosis in children have precluded curative treatment, which is available starting at age 3. To address these gaps, we aimed to increase screening of children at risk and diagnosis and treatment of children with HCV infection in New Mexico. Methods: From July 2020-August 2021, quality improvement efforts were conducted by an improvement team including clinical staff from the UNMH pediatric gastroenterology …
Degradation Of Vitamin E Acetate Through Vaping Produces Byproducts Cytotoxic To Thp-1 Monocytic Cells, Joshua Alcon
Degradation Of Vitamin E Acetate Through Vaping Produces Byproducts Cytotoxic To Thp-1 Monocytic Cells, Joshua Alcon
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
Electronic cigarette or vaping use associated lung injury (EVALI) is a pulmonary disease among those who vaped illicit tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cartridges that resulted in hospitalization or death. Vitamin E acetate (VEA) was a common additive present in the bronchioalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of patients who were hospitalized with EVALI. However, little is known about pulmonary exposure to vitamin E acetate (VEA) when inhaled through vaping. The hypothesis of this study is the cytotoxicity of vaped VEA is due, at least in part, to the pyrolytic breakdown products of VEA produced by vaping, as opposed to VEA itself. From this study, …
Jesus Woodlą́Ą́Jí Sin: Sounding A Self-Determined Navajo Christian Church, Renata Yazzie
Jesus Woodlą́Ą́Jí Sin: Sounding A Self-Determined Navajo Christian Church, Renata Yazzie
Music ETDs
Jesus Woodlą́ą́jí’ Sin: Navajo Hymns of Faith, the first and only extensive Navajo hymnal, was published in 1979. This hymnal contains 365 hymns for congregational singing, translated into the Navajo language. The Navajo Hymnal Committee, responsible for the seven years of intensive translation work, formed in 1972 under the direction of Reverend Dr. Paul Redhouse (1925-2019), an ordained Navajo minister within the Christian Reformed Church. Redhouse wholeheartedly believed that Navajo people had the right to worship in their own language and argued that pre-issued English hymnals by outside church leaders were not suitable for obvious reasons—a language barrier. Through …

"Do You Know The Way To San Jose?" Ethnic Mexicans, Urbanism, Culture, And Politics In Emerging Silicon Valley, 1940-1980, Alexandro J. Jara
History ETDs
My dissertation explores the Latino experience in Santa Clara County, especially in San Jose. The area, located in Northern California’s Bay Area, is nestled just south of the more popular cities of Oakland and San Francisco, nearly five hundred miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. My examination of the social, cultural, and political activities of Latinos in San Jose provides insight into the community development of ethnic Mexicans away from traditional sites of study in places like Tucson, San Antonio, and Los Angeles. I argue that beginning at mid-century, Latinos moved into the downtown area and helped prevent nearby neighborhoods from …

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Alters The Expression Of Mir-150-5p And Its Vascular Targets In Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells And Disrupts The Structure And Integrity Of The Developing Brain Vasculature, Gabriela Perales
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can result in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) causing developmental disabilities and neurocognitive deficits. The effects of PAE on neuronal-specific alterations during brain development have been studied extensively but the contribution of the brain vascular system is limited. Recent studies have determined that there are alterations to the cortical microvasculature during PAE, posing new questions about the role of the vasculature and the development of PAE-mediated neurocognitive deficits. Even less studied are the molecular mechanisms that contribute to changes in the vasculature during PAE. As microRNAs (miRNAs) are master post-transcriptional regulators capable of regulating many mRNA …

Surgical Intervention With Adjunctive Cryotherapy For Canine Conjunctival Hemangiosarcomas Versus Hemangiomas, Lisa M. Hoard
Surgical Intervention With Adjunctive Cryotherapy For Canine Conjunctival Hemangiosarcomas Versus Hemangiomas, Lisa M. Hoard
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
Conjunctival hemangiomas and hemangiosarcomas are vascular tumors that affect the tissue in the eyes of canines. While relatively rare, these tumors can be costly to remove, and have a possibility of recurrence. Therefore, more understanding of the nature of these tumors and recurrence rates is of importance to the veterinary ophthalmologist. To date, there is limited data in the literature (2 retrospective studies) that examine the development, treatment, and recurrence of these vascular tumors; furthermore, the analyses do not examine the potential recurrence of tumors after treatment with therapies adjunctive to surgery (such as cryoablation, radiotherapy, and others). For this …
