How To Achieve Sustainability At An Interprofessional Student-Run Free Clinic, Sarah Bouquin, Mary Blasl, Eleazar Torres, Lindsay Fox

HSC Education Days

The Albuquerque Opportunity Center (AOC) is an emergency shelter run by the local non-profit Heading Home. It temporarily provides a safe place for men experiencing homelessness to sleep at night and store their belongings during the day, as well as access to wrap-around services. UNM Health Science students from the medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and physician assistant programs run a weekly, free clinic for the residents of AOC. This interprofessional student-run clinic allows students the opportunity to learn from each other and treat patients as a cohesive team. Student-run organizations face the perennial challenge of maintaining institutional knowledge and consistency given …

Psychometrics At A Glance: What Does Item Analysis Tell Us?, Katherine Grand

HSC Education Days

The purpose of this work is to help educators improve assessments using item analysis. It is important to assess if the student made a connection of what was taught or learned. If exams are too easy this could lead to low motivation, or exams are too hard it could lead to student frustration or lack of confidence. The purpose of this poster will teach the teacher on how to interpret assessments using item analysis both item quality (difficulty index, discrimination index, and point biserial), and exam quality (Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20).

Care Through Connection: Patient Mutuality And Working Alliance Curriculum, N Mariam Salas, Kathryn Lenberg

HSC Education Days

Background: There is clear evidence in the psychology literature that beyond “people skills,” providers who give the patient an active role in developing the treatment plan can increase the adherence to the medical plan by 70%. Though this is utilized extensively in psychology, medical trainees are not routinely taught these communication skills. To arm our fellows with these necessary skills, we worked with our clinical psychologist, Dr. Kathryn Lenberg, to develop an integrated curriculum over the 2-year period of the fellowship. Implementation: We began a phased roll out of the curriculum in 2020. During elective rotations, fellows spent 1 hour …

5 Simple Ways To Get A Wellness Committee Started, Kari J. Rezac

HSC Education Days

Much has been written about the increase in burnout, increase in rates of depression, and overall decrease in wellness for residents during COVID. Plenty of articles address different factors that could help to achieve wellness for residents including the popular Stanford model, which details the importance of personal resilience, workplace culture, professional fulfillment, and practice efficiency. However, little has been published about the wellness programs and committees that have been carried out during or post-COVID. What has been effective? What starts a wellness culture? Using UNM’s physical medicine and rehabilitation residency’s journey to wellness as a guide, this presentation will …

Top Tips For Using Color And Contrast In Your Presentations, Evelyn Lockhart

HSC Education Days

PowerPoint is an indispensable tool in our teaching arsenal to create multimedia presentations that combine images and text. However, many who use PowerPoint have never been trained in graphic design. In this presentation, we will review evidence-based principles of graphic design that can help educators create presentations with clarity and impact. We will focus on the effective use of color and contrast--two powerful preattentive features which, when used well, can align visual salience with the relevant material in your presentation. We will also review visual accessibility for learners, including consideration for those with visual impairment and color blindness.

Unmasking The Imposter Phenomenon On A Global Level: A Study Exploring Professional Identity Formation In Health Professional Students, Rebecca Hohsfield, Samantha Dewees, Cameron S. Crandall, Amy Clithero-Eridon

HSC Education Days

Imposter phenomenon (IP) is characterized by high achieving individuals experiencing “chronic feelings of self-doubt, the fear of being discovered as an intellectual fraud, and a perception of being less intelligent or competent than peers.” There is limited data on the implications of IP including how feelings of imposterism may affect aspects of one’s mental health. In the current climate of health worker burnout, it is important to consider factors that may predispose individuals pursuing a career in healthcare to mental and emotional disengagement. We investigated the prevalence of IP among students in various healthcare fields on a global scale and …

The LGBTQ+ community experiences unique health needs that many healthcare providers do not possess adequate training to address. This critical barrier to promoting the health of the LGBTQ+ population contributes to health disparities and discrimination. This is particularly salient for the transgender population who experience high rates of discrimination and have difficulty accessing gender affirming care (GAC). The World Professional Association for Transgender Health recommends an interprofessional team-based approach to providing GAC to gender diverse patients. Unfortunately, the siloed approach to training healthcare providers in their respective fields stifles interprofessional collaborative learning and hinders this necessary team-based approach to caring …

Mental Status Exam: Nuts And Bolts, Frames And Mirrors Teaching The Mental Status Exam To First-Year Psychiatry Residents With Cultural Humility, Wayles Haynes, Olivia Shadid, Travis Campbell

HSC Education Days

The mental status exam (MSE) is a tool used in psychiatry and behavioral health to create a cross-sectional assessment of the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive status of patients. This tool serves clinicians to understand and communicate a patient’s current psychiatric state but can be problematic when applied without consideration of provider bias or patient identity within the larger system. The inherently subjective nature of the MSE can assessments that perpetuate biases and inequities when providers are unaware of the complex interactions of identity, culture, power, and privilege. One possible solution is to teach learners to identify the dually subjective and …

Responsible Use Of Race In Research Workshop, N Mariam Salas, Martha Carvour Feb 2023

Responsible Use Of Race In Research Workshop, N Mariam Salas, Martha Carvour

HSC Education Days

Background: Clinical outcomes stratified by race have been used to determine guidelines and treatment plans despite evidence that racial data is unreliable at best and misleading at the worst. There is growing evidence that the misrepresentation of race in medical research may cause erroneous racial profiling, an inaccurate attribution of disease outcomes to biological markers while missing the impact of social determinants of health, and worsening of health care disparities. There is also a belief amongst basic scientists that racial inequities do not impact their professional work or environments. Our curriculum seeks to guide basic science researchers to rethink research …

The Conundrum Of The Struggling Resident: Designing A Curriculum For Successfully Passing A High Stakes Exam, Jennifer Dillow, Rebecca Gerlach, Davit Kocharyn, Bradley Graustein, Eli Torgeson

HSC Education Days

One of the biggest challenges for a program director is the adult learner who struggles with standardized testing and therefore, although they may be an excellent clinician, cannot advance in residency or become board certified. During anesthesiology residency, all residents take a standardized exam (The Basic Exam) during their second year which 15% of all residents fail and passing is required to continue to advance in residency – quite a conundrum. We developed a standardized curriculum for residents who failed their Basic Exam which involved weekly “teach back” sessions with identified faculty members focusing on missed keywords. The strategies employed …

Finding Success In Failure, Crystal Sanchez Feb 2023

Finding Success In Failure, Crystal Sanchez

HSC Education Days

The idea of failure is a daunting one in any health care profession. In an academic world filled with high stakes exams, an emphasis on high test scores, and exemplary clinical performance, the idea of failure can be very scary. However, to be completely without error is not a realistic expectation. Educators should consider ways to allow students to make mistakes in a safe environment, and let them become accustomed to not having all the answers. One way to incorporate the idea that nursing students can learn from their failures is using active learning strategies in didactic classes with evolving …

New Approaches To Case Studies To Prepare Student Nurses For Next-Generation Nclex And Clinical Practice, Christopher Nelson, Crystal Sanchez

HSC Education Days

In the setting of patients with increased complexity and record attrition, more is required of newly-graduated nurses than ever before. Novice nurses struggle to make clinical judgments at the same level as their more experienced counterparts. Nursing scholars have investigated what can be done to better prepare student nurses for the challenges of modern nursing practice. How does one develop or enhance students’ clinical judgment? Was the nursing licensing exam (NCLEX) reliably measuring novice nurses’ ability to use clinical judgment? The National Council of State Boards of Nursing designed the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM) to better measure decision-making. The …

Continuous Education For Prite A “For Residents”, “By Residents” Approach, David Andrade, Dominique Price

HSC Education Days

The Psychiatry Resident-In-Training Examination (PRITE®) is an annual examination designed as a point of reference to track competency for psychiatric residents and training programs. PRITE® scores have historically shown significant correlation with board results, however the preparation for PRITE® has become increasingly problematic. Due to limitations of didactic time and faculty as well as escalating clinical responsibilities for residents, exam preparation has been de-prioritized and disorganized. Self- study blocks led to suboptimal review lacking in structure with unclear goals and inadequate follow up. Residents wanted relevant, accessible, and continuous preparation for the PRITE®. In the winter of 2021, “Continuous education …

Heterogeneous Grouping And Reciprocal Peer Teaching In Anatomy Medical Education, Julia A. Jordon, Rebecca S. Hartley

HSC Education Days

To improve student performance in anatomy, we introduced two teaching interventions: competence-based heterogeneous (CBH) group formation and reciprocal peer teaching (RPT) to two successive medical school cohorts. Independently, CBH and RPT elevate outcomes of lower-performing students without negatively impacting higher-performing students (Donovan, 2018 & Pizzimenti, 2016). Clinical Morphology is a classroom and lab-based active-learning block designed around small groups that were historically formed by random assignment. In this study, entering medical students were administered a pre-quiz to stratify them into quartiles, after which CBH groups of six to eight students were formed. Groups were divided into two to four lab …
