Effectiveness Of A Question Formulation Rubric With Second-Year Medical Students: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Jonathan D. Eldredge, Melissa A. Schiff, Jens Langsjoen
Publications
OBJECTIVE: The FAC (Focus, Amplify, Compose) rubric for assessing medical students' question formulation skills normally accompanies our Evidence Based Practice (EBP) training. The combined training and assessment rubric have improved student scores significantly. How much does the rubric itself contribute to improved student scores? This study sought to measure student improvement using the rubric either with or without a linked 25-minute training session.
METHODS: Randomized Controlled Trial. The authors tested the hypothesis that a 25-minute training session combined with use of a rubric would lead to higher scores than a brief explanation of this rubric alone. All 72 participating second-year …

The Intersection Of Racism And Ableism In Disability Support Services, Carrie E. Mulderink
The Intersection Of Racism And Ableism In Disability Support Services, Carrie E. Mulderink
Communication ETDs
The websites of disability resource centers at six universities are used in a discourse analysis to forefront ways in which the Whiteness of disability is upheld. The main research question, built using a DisCrit (Disability/Critical Race theory) lens, is: how do the institutional discourses of disability resource centers reproduce or challenge particular identities for college students with disabilities? The research sub-question explored in this dissertation that built off of this wider scope is: how are the politics of intersectionality addressed in such discourses? Then, in the second analysis chapter, two more analytical categories are discussed that were generated from my …
Eco-Anxiety And Heteronormativity In Dystopian Novels, Léa M. Briere
Eco-Anxiety And Heteronormativity In Dystopian Novels, Léa M. Briere
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
For marginalized communities, such as women and queer individuals, survival in their environment has always been a matter of adapting to social norms and expectations. However, the challenges have become even more complex in the face of climate change and environmental catastrophes, which often affect these communities disproportionately. While modern dystopian stories often evoke eco-anxiety by portraying societies at the mercy of their environment, Michelle Tea and Wendy Delorme have found an opportunity to break free from societal norms and heteronormative expectations in the speculative worlds they create in Black Wave (2015) and Viendra le temps du feu (2021), respectively. …

Occupational therapist play a huge role in the rehabilitation and well-being of individuals who suffer brain injuries. Decline of cognition, endurance, balance, and short-term memory loss are areas an occupational therapist can address in therapy. Therapy will help the individual become more independent and regain function.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Morgan E. Fambro, Kendahl Schlosser, Carmen H. Ausserer
Client Educational Handouts
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder often caused by genetic predisposition combined with environmental factors. ASD can be present in many different forms and severity levels. On the mild end of the spectrum people are often able to enter into mainstream education and integrate into the workplace with the use of therapeutic learned skills to improve their social skills. On the more severe end of the spectrum, autistic people may never learn functional social skills or ways to communicate. These barriers can be challenging for the autistic person and their family. It is a disorder that is lifelong. Treatments …

Mental Health In Transnational Contexts: Reconsidering Conceptualizations, Coping Strategies, And Racism Through The Narratives Of Refugees Resettled In The United States, Ryeora Choe, Ryeora Choe
Sociology ETDs
This dissertation examines refugees’ mental health conceptualizations in their resettled contexts, their views on Western mental health services, and their perspectives on how changing experiences related to discrimination affect their mental health. Despite refugees’ social and cultural contexts changing multiple times, little is known about their views on and interactions with the dominant biomedical model of mental health in their country of resettlement and how their hybrid identities and experiences embedded in multiple locations affect their understanding of mental health and healing practices. A transnational framework emphasizing continuity between various locations and “in-between the designations of identity” across borders, and …
Femtotesla Magnetometry And Nanoscale Imaging With Color Centers In Diamond, Yaser Silani
Femtotesla Magnetometry And Nanoscale Imaging With Color Centers In Diamond, Yaser Silani
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
Intriguing photophysical properties of color centers in diamond make them ideal candidates for many applications from imaging and sensing to quantum networking. In the first part of this work, we have studied the silicon vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond for nanoscale imaging applications. We showed that these centers are promising fluorophores for Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) microscopy, owing to their photostable, near-infrared emission and favorable photophysical properties. In the second part, we built a femtotesla Radio-Frequency (RF) magnetometer based on the diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers and magnetic flux concentrators. We used this sensor to remotely detect Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance …
Disrupted Ambitions And Unmasked Identities: An Analysis Of Doubleness In Sylvia Plath’S The Bell Jar And Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man In Cold War America, Laura Anderson
English Language and Literature ETDs
This thesis conducts a literary analysis on Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man (1952) and Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar (1963) with a primary investigation on the protagonists and their convergence of identity in Cold War America. One of the critical discourses evaluated throughout the project’s literary analysis includes the protagonists’ complications of doubleness. This essay argues that since these two texts sit between W.E.B DuBois’s “Double Consciousness” and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s 1988 theory on intersectionality, these protagonists are forced to contend with an identity crossroads. Secondary to the context of this analysis is the use of “post-war” and “Cold War,”; neither are …
Coaching Student Clinicians And Parents To Use Naturalistic Communication Techniques For Children With Signs Of Autism, Erin M. Gallegos
Coaching Student Clinicians And Parents To Use Naturalistic Communication Techniques For Children With Signs Of Autism, Erin M. Gallegos
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
In this study, researchers implemented a short-term cascading coaching program focusing on naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBIs) with three participant triads consisting of a graduate student clinician, a minimally verbal child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or signs of ASD, and the child’s parent. The efficacy of several short-term instruction sessions, in-session coaching, and student clinician parent coaching was evaluated using a multiple baseline across interventionists design. The primary dependent variables were clinician and parent use of elicitation techniques, including creating communication temptations and prompting, and response techniques, including reinforcing child communication and using vocal models. Following targeting coaching, all …
To Seek Or Not To Seek? An Inquiry Into Feedback-Seeking Behavior Among Non-Clinical Healthcare Workers, Abigail R. Ortiz
To Seek Or Not To Seek? An Inquiry Into Feedback-Seeking Behavior Among Non-Clinical Healthcare Workers, Abigail R. Ortiz
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
Understanding what motivates non-clinical healthcare workers to seek feedback in the workplace is critical in supporting such behavior within organizations. This study aims to answer the following research question “Why do non-clinical healthcare workers seek feedback in the workplace?” To conduct this study, I analyzed 13 semi-structured interviews with non-clinical healthcare workers. Findings confirmed the presence of four self-motives (self-assessment, self-improvement, self-enhancement, and self-verification). Additionally, study findings highlighted the presence of other-oriented motives, when individuals seek feedback due to their concern or care for others (i.e., patients, teams, and supervisors). The research also illustrated the interplay of self- and other-oriented …

Trait Sadism In Bdsm Practitioners And Non-Practitioners, Marley Russell
Trait Sadism In Bdsm Practitioners And Non-Practitioners, Marley Russell
Psychology ETDs
Sadism is an elusive construct within psychology. Multiple types are studied without clear psychometric or theoretical distinctions, and operationalizations of these respective sub-constructs lack validity. This study explores the empirical distinction between two sadism types: consensual sexual sadism (i.e. in the context of BDSM) and trait sadism. Trait sadism is widely synonymized with “everyday sadism”, but here conceptualized as a higher-order construct encompassing both everyday and a novel “prosocial sadism”. I develop and pilot the BDSM Identities and Behaviors (BIB) checklist in a sample of BDSM practitioners. I then compare those practitioners to non-practitioners on trait sadism and dark triad …

Cooking Together To Support Children With Feeding Difficulties, Joleysa Anne S Manese, Osana Abich-Oliva, Catherine Lin
2023 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Feeding problems are estimated to occur in 20-45% of typically developing children worldwide, where 80-90% of children and adults with developmental disorders will have feeding and swallowing problems at some point in their life. In the United Sates, more than one in 37 American children under the age of five annually receive a diagnosis of, and currently have, a pediatric feeding disorder (PFD). Some conditions that contribute to this statistic are Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), sensory processing disorder, and behavior difficulties. To support children with PFD, the University of New Mexico Hospital started the SAFE (Supports and Assessment for Feeding …

Neonatal Opiate Withdrawal Syndrome In Covid 19: Are Hospitalized Infants With Nows Experiencing More Severe Clinical Illness Associated With Covid 19 Related Changes In Hospital Infection Control Policies And Practices?, Dane G. Winter, Sofia Chavez, Lorena Galvan, Peggy Maclean, Jessie Maxwell, Chelsea Wilhite, Heather Pratt-Chavez
2023 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Background: The SARS-COVID-19 pandemic requires hospitals to increase infection control practices and implement policies calling for universal face masks. These policies dramatically changed the hospital milieu for newborns as visitors were either limited or entirely restricted. For newborns experiencing neonatal opiate withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) due to exposure to opioids during pregnancy, hospitalization is often prolonged. Protocols for care for infants with NOWS emphasize the importance of non-pharmacologic care as first-line treatment, recommending holding infants, swaddling, and rooming-in caregivers. With changes to infection control policies, providers are concerned infants with NOWS are experiencing complications including longer stays and more complex clinical …

2023 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Background: COVID-19 vaccines demonstrate excellent effectiveness against infection and symptomatic disease due to SARS-CoV-2. Vaccination in children is vital to lessen public health burden. While effectiveness of COVID vaccination is known, many families are hesitant to vaccinate their children. This can be attributed to multiple factors, one of which is trust in presented information. Vaccine hesitancy is seen more commonly in rural communities than in their urban counterparts. The Idea States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network (ISPCTN) established a mobile health app with information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to …

2023 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Background: Acute viral bronchiolitis is the most common reason for hospitalization of infants less than 2 years of age in the United States with ~130,000 admissions per year. Numerous treatments have been evaluated to prevent symptoms and long-term respiratory effects in infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis, but no effective strategies have been identified to date. Air pollution is associated with respiratory symptoms and disease, most notably in sensitive populations, and is a key intervention target. Portable air cleaners utilizing HEPA filters are proven to reduce fine particulate matter and other air pollutants and have been associated with improvement in respiratory outcomes …

2023 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Background: Kangaroo mother care (KMC), the act of placing a diaper-clad infant on his/her mother’s chest for continuous skin-to-skin contact, has been shown to be effective for thermal control, breastfeeding, and bonding in newborns. Skin-to-skin care, while similar to KMC, typically lasts for short periods of time and enhances breastfeeding, attachment and parental self-esteem; it has also been shown to be safe for both non-intubated and intubated preterm infants. Heart rate variability (HRV), a measurement of maturation of parasympathetic versus sympathetic activity, increases with gestational age and may be useful in capturing clinically relevant dynamic changes in autonomic regulation in …
